Wonderful video! Someone identified the pictures of a jumping spider I posted as a Putnam, and I see they were correct! I had the pleasure of sharing company with a juvenile female of the species. I noticed her on my car windshield in one city. Then I drove 30 minutes on the turnpike and saw that she had moved under the passenger side mirror and was riding along quite comfortably.
When I got home in my garage, I encouraged her into a small insect collection container I had with me.
I made her comfortable in a jar with substrate, a stick and a leaf. I caught a couple of annoying fruit flies that have invaded our home and gave her a snack and some water in a piece of paper towel that she drank deeply from.
I took her put in our bathroom and she proceeded to be very much quick and full of drama. She ended up jumping into my hair and disappearing. I looked very carefully for her through my hair, etc but she had escaped into our bathroom. In a clean, white bathroom I couldn't find her.
For a week, I had no sighting of her, and I worried she had passed away somewhere in the vents.
When cleaning the restroom, I came upon the shriveled corpse of a brown recluse. I have several time caught recluses in our bathtub and relocated them to places outside near water sources and abandoned buildings.
I thought, well perhaps the jumping spider is still alive and took down this recluse as a meal.
A week later, I found her out in the open walking on the side of the bathtub. I put my hand out, she jumped on, and I coaxed her back to the jar. Gave her a fresh paper towel piece with water and another couple of fruit flies.
A day later, I took her to a local park and released her on an oak tree, which provided almost perfect camouflage for her.
I took some pictures of how well she was hidden by the tree, a spot the spider sort of challenge.
The whole time, I assumed she was a tan jumping spider, as I am new to the world of jumping spiders, but someone saw my pictures and corrected me on her species. ❤
I had thought about keeping her since I have been thinking about obtaining a pet jumping spider, but particularly since I had been able to figure out she was a female, I decided I did not want to remove a potential breeding female from the wild. Even though I know they are not rare or endangered.
I think I just respected her as a hunter who had chosen to hitch a ride with me to a different city, perhaps because she wanted new territory. I didn't want to limit that to even a nice enclosure.
Bouncing around is called POP-CORNING!!
I subscribed anyway, lol. Great video!
Thank you!
Thank you for this informative video on Putnam's! I have a sub adult female i found as a little black speck in January. I didnt know the species until her last molt. I haven't been able to find much info on them. Thankfully now i know they are all dramatic. I was a bit concerned because of the bouncing, slinging, herself around at times so good to know its nothing to worry about.
You're welcome and thank you! And their drama is my favorite thing about them! 🤣
Via G. B. Edwards' 2004 revision of the genus, "Etymology: Possibly this should have been a matronym after Mrs. Mary B. Putnam, but as she was not identified in the original description (she was acknowledged as a contributor in 1888), I am retaining the original spelling (as later emended)".
In the Peckhams' original paper, Mary Putnam is credited under the section introduced by "We are also indebted for specimens to the following persons", so presumably she was a 19th-century amateur/enthusiast who captured and sent in some examples of _P. putnami_ to the Peckhams.
Looking at the rest of the credited contributors, not all of them ended up with species named after them, but I recognize Harford in _Phanias harfordi_, Johnson in _Phidippus johnsoni_, and Tyrrell in *P. tyrrelli*. Presumably these contributors went above and beyond in providing data or other assistance. Interesting!
Thank you, so very much for providing this educational video on this specific spider!!! I have found 3 females in our wood line, no luck finding a beautiful male yet. But he's out there somewhere. I appreciate this video so much
You're welcome and thank you! Also, I often see the males later in summer, usually August and September.
@randyadventure thank you for that, I'll keep looking.
Randy is correct, studies have shown that they fully mature later in the season than the other Phidippus species. More towards fall.
@randyadventure I actually think I have a male out of the 4 I now have, it molted and looks very male like, longer legs slight bulbous pedipalps, I'm so excited.
Man I can't believe you flicked that poor little spider like that 😆😅 just kidding very cool video. Always looking for your next video. Thanks for your work and interesting information.
Thank you! It's kind of a balancing act to make the videos, and also go out in the field to observe and film, plus spend time with the family. 🤣🤣🤣
@@randyadventure yes I understand, and appreciate it. My favorite is the Bigfoot. You need to do something like that again. That is funny stuff . I have a little grandson name Felix that loves Bigfoot videos. And another one that loves bugs snakes plants cool stuff. Thanks
Randy
Thank you! And I would like to make another video like that, but I must be more careful. I inured myself pretty good making that one! 🤣🤣🤣
Love this so much! Do you have more video of the mating dance?
Thank you! And I'm sorry I don't. Hopefully, I can get more footage this year.
Wonderful video about these very cool jumpers! I am fascinated by Putnams. Thanks for sharing this video.
They fascinate me, too! And thank you!
They can fking dogeroll
They had me laughing out loud. Great camera work
🤣 Thank you!
Awesome photos and video. Super cool! Thanks!
Thank you!
Thanks for this fantastic video on the Putnami.
I recently caught a wild female which I believe to be gravid. She hid away inside the log in her enclosure for a few weeks! and finally emerged this morning looking rather smaller. That could be from the lack of food during this whole time she stayed in there, but there's also a significant amount of thick web I spotted within. I'm 80% sure she laid eggs up there.
I've started preparing for it in case some begin to emerge, and plan to keep at least 8 of them. The rest will be released where Gwen, the mother, was captured originally.
Anyway it was great seeing this video and learning more about them, as you said online searches produce very little about these in particular.
I plan on documenting my experience with them and making videos too. Hopefully I can breed a 2nd generation from these eventually!
My Gwen has been surprisingly timid, and hasn't wanted to climb on my finger or have anything to do with me. She just holds really still when I hold my finger close. There was one time she walked up slowly and gave me one little boop touch before backing away.
but she's one of the only jumpers I haven't been able to make friends with. I find many Tan jumpers are skeptical of interacting, but some are more curious.
Haven't interacted with any Putnami until I found Gwen.
Do you find a lot of Putnami are shy or skeptical? or are more of them curious like bold/regals?
That's awesome! Thank you and good luck!
For me, they didn't seem eager to jump into my hand. So, I would gently scoop them up and after minute or so, they seemed more comfortable with being held.
How is Gwen and babies?
@@Themacrohuntress Hi and thanks for asking!
Actually Gwen passed away earlier this year, and she never did have babies. I thought she might've laid eggs, but could not verify. It turned out to just be her hammock.
I have 6 babies. Can't wait to see them grow. 5 seem super chill while on is bouncing off the walls lol
🤣🤣🤣
subscribed anyway... ;')
im keeping a few Regal jumpers myself with a recent egg sac given to the local reptile store. saved 2 of her 'slings, these things grow up FAST!
They are oddly... clumsy. For being such amazing hunters, they do just tumble about now and then!
superb ❤️🕷️i love jumping spiders 😇
That's an awesome video..
Thank you!
I think if the goal wasn't so high you could slam that ball or if you were like 7 feet tall 😅👍👍
🤣🤣🤣
I wonder if that spinning & flipping behavior was evolved as a way to evade cannibalistic neighbors & siblings
It seems like a good defense against another jumping spider.
I agree. And if you saw in the video where the female jumped on the male, he did something that seemed to throw her off and backwards. I kind of missed it with the camera because I was afraid, she was going to kill him, so I accidentally shook the camera. 🤣
@@randyadventure I did see that 😆❤️
Haha I wrote my comment before that part 😂 #NailedIt
I also saw your get in there to protect him. ❤️ Such cool spiders!
🤣 Yes, he was quite fascinated with her, and she had eaten a large fly earlier that day, so I thought she was full, and it would be okay to put them together, but no. 🤣 As soon as he turned away, I figured he may have seen something that I didn't. Like he could see hunger in her eyes. 🤣
@@randyadventure 😂🥰
I love jumping spiders so much. I caught my first one in my apartment (a regal jumping spider), & he’s patiently waiting in his basic enclosure for me to finish his low-budget bioactive one that has become a bit of an art project as well 😝
Thank you for doing what you do! 🩷
That's awesome! And thank you!
