Dio was the greatest Metal singer of all time, super theatric performer and some killer lyrics
I see Dio.. I click 'like' ;)
The hand sign, for Dio, (it exists in many cultures), is an old Italian gesture called Malocchio for warding off the "evil eye"
Yep, his grandmother used it all the time which is where he got it from.
That may be true, but Gene Simmons was the first to use it in a heavy metal/rock context
gene held his pick with thumb and middle and ring finger, but he did not use it as a hand gesture
erbtx1 isn't it also called "Mano Cornuta"?
Matthew Payne sure he did; with the pick held as you've described he would then wave to the audience and thus the birth of the devil horns
Great reaction to a legend. Dio was a Metal God!
RIP Dio!
Had the pleasure of seeing him on the "Sacred Heart" tour in Offenbach, Germany in 1986. Craig Goldie on guitar I believe, was phenomenal. R.I.P. RJD.
I only visited Sacred Heart and Dream Evil, wished I Visited more. But that have to do in observing Greatness. :(
Opera is fair because Ronnie James Dio has the voice for it!
"Where does this music come from?.." it comes from the heart my man...
The word I'd use to describe the performance style is theatrical, and it's a hallmark of metal bands.
That sign he holds up that you asked about is pretty much the universal hand gesture for Rock N Roll, as if to say "Rock on!"
Frank John wich thanks to dio yes
If you watch him he makes a lot of jokes he says I got six billion subscribers kids around I like that s*** he plays with your head and it's cool I love the rat
Dio is the greatest rock/ metal singer of all time. Thanks for giving the man a shot. R.I.P R.J.D.
Great video. I saw Dio on this tour and it was the best show I had seen. He had a castle and a total mid evil setup. He slayed a dragon at the end off the show with an epic laser and sword fight. No one put on a show like Dio. Period.
I am really enjoying your take on this type of music. I grew up on it and still love it to this day! Keep up the great reviews!
That hand sign is to chase evil away.
Dio was known for being really gracious to his fans. The "devil horns" as they came to be known are also the gesture in American sign language for "I love you" - which he said was what he really meant when he used it live.
This video reaction was supposed to go up on "Friday Nights Live" but added to "METAL MONDAYS" by mistake sorry im just trying to build a format. thanks for your patients in my progress.
Rap Rat Trapped listen to "for whom the bell tolls" or "ride the lighting" by Metallica
It's Metal anyhows, no harm no foul. I caught DIO live in Nurnberg in 84' or 85' - Monsters of Rock at Hindenberg Field
I've seen Ronnie James Dio perform 3 times. Dio had a very awesome voice. Most of his music is based in fantasy and mystical stuff. The song means to me, to stay focused and keep your guard up. Rip Ronnie James Dio.
A classically trained singer..a ledgend. Glad u could appreciate that.
If you were 29 in 1986, you'd be 61 right now. Damn you look good, lol
He was the one that "invented" the devil horns in the music sense. It used to be some pagan shit, but he made it metal
Guitar guy isn’t that a catholic thing?
Paganism is way older, and he said it was a 'italian folk' superstition or something. You banish the evil souls. Im guessing its from the pagan times. Maybe some wicca practice
Guitar guy i see
he Horned God is one of the two primary deities found in Wicca and some related forms of Neopaganism. The term Horned God itself predates Wicca, and is an early 20th-century syncretic term for a horned or antlered anthropomorphic god with partly pseudohistorical origins, partly based on historical horned deities. Wikipedia. I think the devil horns is a way of banishing the horned devil by casting it back at him or something
Dio stated he got it from his Italian grandmother who used it to ward off the evil eye.
“If He-Man had a garage band” that was brilliant fucking perfect. I subscribed after that comment.
These are the albums Dio did with black sabbath: mob rules, heaven and hell, and dehumanizer. I love the stuff he did with black sabbath, especially songs like , "voodoo " , "country girl", " wishing well" and " neon knights".
If You Enjoy The Singer RONNIE JAMES DIO on this one Please do STARGAZER by RAINBOW his band 8 years before this -His masterpiece as well as master Musicians on Lead Guitar RITCHIE BLACKMORE
Iron Maiden, Rime of the ancient mariner (Flight 666) [Live version]
Thank you i will add to my "FRIDAY NIGHTS LIVE" list hope you enjoy. Appreciate the help
Sweet sounds good. If you do get around to it I would highly recommend having the lyrics available for it as it may be confusing in some sections of the song. But you do you of course.
I saw this show man. It was killer. He had the best guitarists.
One of the best voices and ranges in Rock. He took over for Ozzy when he left Black Sabbath and killed it. Legendary dude. RIP
When Ozzy got dumpped
Dio was as much a storyteller as he was a singer, and he kind of invented the whole operatic metal thing. He started out way back in the sixties doing dso-wop music, and then the seventies hit, and he was doing hyper-jacked metal (see Elf & Rainbow) before he went into Black Sabbath, and then went solo as you see here. Don't pay too much attention to the show-back in the 80's, things got a bit weird.
Consider looking up the lyrics on your reactions - Genius.Com is a very good resource with community contributions to lyric interpretation (some even accurate).
His sign (despite ANYTHING Gene goddamn Simmons says) is the Malocchio, which is a ward against the evil eye; he saw his grandmother do it from time to time, and decided to adopt it.
Dio's songs sometimes were a little hard to understand lyrically, but I've always felt this was about the consequences of not being a part of life, or rather being overly cautious. Notice he focusses on the negative in this song, rather than anything positive. He's essentially being ironic.
Check out Dio with Sabbath - Heaven and Hell (Live)
Don't Talk to Strangers
Don't talk to strangers
Cause they're only there to do you harm
Don't write in starlight
Cause the words may come out real
Don't hide in doorways
You may find the key that opens up your soul
Don't go to Heaven
Cause it's really only Hell
Don't smell the flowers
They're an evil drug to make you lose your mind
Don't dream of women
Cause they'll only bring you
Down!
Hey you, you know me
You've touched me, I'm real
I, forever
The one that lets you look and see and feel me
I'm danger, I'm the stranger
And I, I'm darkness, I'm anger, I'm pain
I, I'm master
The evil song you sing inside your brain
Drive you insane
Don't talk
Don't let them inside your mind, yeah
Run away, run away, go!
No, no!
Don't let them in your mind
Protect your soul
Don't dance in darkness
You may stumble there and you're sure to fall
Don't write in starlight
Cause the words may come out real
Don't talk to strangers
(Don't talk to strangers)
Cause they're only there to make you sad
Don't dream of women
Cause they'll only bring you
Down!
Yeah!
Run, run, run, run away
Ronnie James Dio had one of the most iconic voices in metal. This was during his solo career. Before this, he was in Black Sabbath and before that, Rainbow. I never saw him live, but always heard he put on an amazing show. I really wish I had. He died in 2010.
The hand gesture is from Italy. He got it from his grandmother. It can either ward off or send a hex at see someone. He used it for dramatic effect. It has become the universal sign for hard rock/metal/things that kick ass.
If you like his voice, check out a much older track called "Stargazer" by his old band Rainbow. Epic.
Or "Heaven and Hell" or "Children of the Sea" with Black Sabbath. You will have to edit up those to post them.
I appreciate your honesty, your willingness to experience something that is foreign to you, and your assessments of the music. You understand more than you realize. You're picking some really good examples, even though I know you don't like everything, it's still refreshing. Just be you, and the rest will come.
this is metal. and ronie james dio is a one of a kind. i saw this concert at the mississippi gulf coast coliseum in 1986. Till this day it was the best stage show i've ever seen.
This music is like an opera. Very theatrical. This is 80s mainstream metal. The best music of all time. The i0s set the bar on instrumentation of guitar work, etc..
This all comes from blues and classical mixed really. He kinda started that sign. Called the devil horns. But, he wasn't into devils, or religion at all...
It's just fantasy music man.
Classic Oldschool Heavy Metal
Metal by far and away the greatest genre to see live.
Goseahawksandgoldenstate303 you know what I’m learning that. It pretty amazing.
Ronnie James Dio is known as one of the best metal singers of all time! Check out Stargazer by Rainbow -- the Evil Eye hand sign thing is something RJD said his grandmother would do when he was a little kid LOL
Ronnie James Dio. One of the greatest metal singers ever!!!!
You have just watched the mighty DIO. He replaced Ozzy in Black Sabbath when they fired Ozzy. You should check out "Neon Knights" or "Heaven and Hell" by Sabbath with Dio singing. It was epic. Hair was very big back in the eighties. lol.
Should check out Dio’s Holy Diver and Rainbow in the Dark
this would be "Heavy Metal"
He insults metal every time he does a video so you would think he would just stop doing metal reaction videos.
Really enjoying your reactions, the fact you break down the songs and you can relate to alot of the techniques used and have an open mind is a great asset to your channel.
I would like to suggest Nightwish-Ghost love score (live at wacken 2013), it's metal but not as people know it and might add a little different flavor to your musical pallet
Great songs your choosing to react to man. Keep it up. I need to catch up on all your vids. Dio was fucking cool.
RIP Legend!
The lyrics are written about dreams he had and wrote them down. Awesome lyrics. During those days they were regarded as devil worship music but the truth is that they were about dreams.
Dio: "the anthill with the voice of a mountain"
I love how this is for the live series but it's metal again. I approve
Great that u show a Dio video, even tho u don't understand it. My all time hero
The singer RONNIE JAMES DIO is 5 foot 2 - Small Man Big Voice
I went to this show here where I live and they put on an amazing show. A show which included a dragon. Ronnie James Dio was the front man for Black Sabbath back in the day and he killed it with them too. The sign he puts up is something his grandmother used to do when he was young. It was some kind of sign to ward off evil spirits or to ward off the evil eye. Or to put it back at another individual. Dio had some interviews that are here on UA-cam that explains what the sign was. Either way it was all about the style of music back in the day. If you get the chance, look up some of his other videos on here. Liking your channel my friend.
He is very theatrical.. His concerts were awesome. I remember one that literally made my skin tingle.. He's powerful.. No it isn't devil shit... Lol..
Nirvana - "Serve The Servants"
To understand Dio one must understand how high he is singing and making it sound like 4 steps down. For example this song goes up to B4 but still sounds like a baritone. Dio had so well developed (and talented) vocals that none has overcome yet.
This music is not a shit my friend, this is the real music that you should know. I'm not asking you to change your taste of music, but to get inside this kind of style and to be so close to it and to understand that those songs will never die and it will last forever. Be a Rocker and you'll never regret!
I STRONGLY believe his best vocal performance is the song.....falling of the edge of the world.
Even the lyrics are RONNIE.
Hope hes sitting at " the table round". RIP Ronnie.
You strike on a good point though. For me metal is about how the music itself makes you feel the lyrics are just a bonus
Ronnie James Dio actually did three (3) albums with Black Sabbath. People keep forgetting "Dehumanizer".
Dio started his training in opera. Also the horns were an old way of witches in europe to recognize each other. If someone gives you the “evil eye”, you can point the horns at the person and send the energy back at them.
Dio started the devil horn hand thing that you see in all of rock.
I know you understand the RAW TALENT of Ronnies voice, check out a song titled 'Rainbow Eyes' from the band 'Rainbow', you'll be amazed!!!! The man had an INCREDIBLE voice, perfect pitch, tone, strength, control, SO GIFTED!!! We always lose the most talented at far too young an age.
It ain't stupid as you said for us metalheads this is pure gold
The 🤘🏻that Dio does is an Italian symbol to ward off evil. Later used adapted to rock on
Dio "Rainbow in the Dark" "Mystery" and "Holy Diver"
Sabbath albums with Ronnie James Dio - HEAVEN AND HELL (1980), MOB RULES (1981), LIVE EVIL(1982) and DEHUMANIZER (1992). Would rejoin Sabbath under the new name Heaven And Hell in 2007 until his death.
Dio himself said the hand sign he does just means long live rock and roll🤘
The hand sign is a huge misconception. People think it’s devil horns. But it’s actually an Italian hand gesture that his grandma used to do to ward off evil spirits. Please react to “killswitch engage” end of heartache. More commercial song but good one to introduce yourself to.
Oh that one show it called (live in Moscow 91) crazy big show and it gave plenty good bands to react two from that one show
I was at that show . The thing about a metal concert is you always got your money’s worth !
you reacted to many songs from the old school
time for new school & I suggest: Hatebreed - Seven Enemy
will add to list thanks
Try rainbow in the dark or holy diver by the same band
Lord of the Rings is just about right, Dio was about as tall as a hobbit. The little big man!
Classic metal had a lot of elements of fantasy and religion. It also crosses over well with symphonic music.
Sign he did with a fist is called "el coonado",symol of devil's horns. And that man Ronnie James Dio invented that sign in music.First used it as much I know.
Also if you want some He-Man level stuff, check out Sacred Heart by Dio, he fights a dragon on stage
Mjora wtf? 😂 thanks for the feedback
The hand sign is called Metal Horns, it's just a gesture that metalheads use, it's not devil worshiping or some shit like that
2000!!! Subscribers!!! Thanks for the help and support let’s get to 3000!!! Peace ✌️
I've always interpreted this song as about black magic. "Don't write in starlight, the words may turn out real".
just subscribed man. Its funny watching a dude listen to new shit.
MongoJoeMeathook I’m glad you enjoyed. Hope it continues ✌️
and might I add, something that is "different"... Guerilla Laments by The Diablo Swing Orchestra.
Also, swear like a sailor man.... let the bitches bitch.
You was 29 in 1986? Man, you're looking very good for your age.
named my kid dio after him remarkable vocalist followed him since he was in rainbow late in 70's
Your vids are great, enjoying watching you learn and grow. Suggestions Another Body Murdered (Faith No More and Boo-Ya Tribe) early rap/metal fusion. Elephant Gun (David Lee Roth) best guitar/bass player combo ever, hard rock. Flight Of Icarus (Iron Maiden) how I found out about them, instantly hooked. Surrender - Live at Budokan (Cheap Trick) Power Pop/Classic Rock. Dreams In The Dark ( Badlands) Bluesy Metal. I'll See The Light Tonight (Yngwie (pronounced Ing vay) Malmsteen Greatest guitar player....period. Again none of these done by anyone else out there
thanks for the list. Peace
Some of Dio's best singing is in the two Black Sabbath albums, 'Mob Rules' and 'Heaven and Hell.' My two favorite songs are from 'Mob Rules:' Sign of the Southern Cross and Falling off the Edge of the World. They sound best cranked with solid bass support - it's Sabbath, after all.
The devil sign 🤘 was invented by Dio. Ozzy often did the peace sign, when Dio replaced him he wanted to do something different. It was an old country thing called malic you are catching the evil eye with your fingers.
I was at this show... I'm on the VHS tape. Just for a second, but what an awesome show
Ronnie James Dio was known for popularizing the sign of the horns in heavy metal. He claimed his Italian grandmother used it to ward off the evil eye (which is known in Southern Italy as malocchio). Dio began using the sign soon after joining the metal band Black Sabbath in 1979. The previous singer in the band, Ozzy Osbourne, was rather well known for using the "peace" sign at concerts, raising the index and middle finger in the form of a V. Dio, in an attempt to connect with the fans, wanted to similarly use a hand gesture. However, not wanting to copy Osbourne, he chose to use the sign his grandmother always made. The horns became famous in metal concerts very soon after Black Sabbath's first tour with Dio. The sign would later be appropriated by heavy metal fans under the name "maloik", a corruption of the original malocchio.
the hand sign is what his grandmother used to do above the childrens heads to drive the devil out
Alice In Chains- Love Hate Love live at the Moore theatre 1990
The so called "Devil Horns" is actually something Dio got from his grandmother who was italian, and it's originally a sign to protect those you care about from evil spirits and so on. I believe it comes from the gypsy culture. And over time it has kinda lost it's meaning. But thats sort of the origin of it in metal.
I really enjoy what you're doing. It's nice to see the music I listen to every day from another perspective.
Keep it up!
Also it would be awesome to see you react to In Flames - Alias or just about any of their songs! =)
The hand gestue is called "the horns" he said he got it from his grandmother , who said it was to ward off evil. He began to use it on stage and it became synonymous with metal .
The 80s metal had all different fashion styles , it depended on what you were playing , bands like metallica , megadeth etc. did not dress like this , they were about black T shirts and jeans and nikes
Were you really 29 in 86 , no fuckin way? Lmaooo
You're one fucken mellow dude. I accidentally catch myself smiling listening to you.
NOW WERE EVEN CAUS E YA MADE ME SMILE LOL. Stay Peace.
Legend
The wardrobe is theater based. They have to be flamboyant to be noticeable from the back of a 10,000 seat arena
Don't talk to strangers is a saying your mom tells you to keep you safe growing up...as in many old sayings ...helps young kids be safe
"If He-Man had a garage band" LOL HILARIOUS
"Its like what if He-Man had a garage band" I seriously laughed out loud, that was funny! and I love Dio!
Metallica- Harvester of sorrow live 1991 Moscow
Back in the day metal bands did write about alot of fantasy and folklore legend. Also they wrote about great ancient history wars and legendary heroes
RRT! LOL, yeah we all got a little corny there in the 80's man. Dio was the golden voice of metal, very theatrical and was very Lord of the Ringish. LMAO! He actually did 2 albums with Sabbath, Heaven and Hell(One of the best hard rock albums of the day) and Mob Rules(one of personal favs). Unfortunately his previous guitarist quit/fired the band mid-way through this tour so the guy you are seeing was just a fill in. His first 2 solo albums were fire, esp Holy Diver. This was a weird rendition of that song. Dio was putting out music in the 50's if you can believe that. He was one of the pioneers of the genre and was a huge loss when he died. See what you do man, get me all worked up and shit! Try another one, studio version, DIO-THE LAST IN LINE.
thanks for the back story. Appreciate the suggestions.
Dio definitely has a storied history. From Black Sabbath to Rainbow to his solo career, he's considered one of the strongest voices in metal history. His style always comes through, whether with Sabbath, Rainbow, or solo. Suggestions with Rainbow would include Man On The Silver Mountain or Stargazer.
You called it out... "Opera Rock"... similar to a few other bands of that era... Iron Maiden is another one without going back too far to Alice Cooper or the 70's. It was a show... and the tempo changes (3 plus in one song) is what would draw people to it. Not the same sampled beat played over and over again. Yea, the clothing and makeup was goofy but also part of the show. They didn't dress like that off stage. The lyrics are left up to you to interpret as they relate to YOUR life.
The Late Great Ronnie James Dio Did 3 albums with Sabbath
Heaven and Hell 1980
The mob rules 1982
And Dehumanizer 1994 (very Underrated album)
Funny that you made the Lord of the rings reference. DIO is KNOWN for being into Magic and Dragons as his stage show.
Iron Maiden - Fear of the Dark Live - En Vivo AWESOME concert check it out if you liked this video.
Damn bro you got trivia on the vid!? That shit is dope!
RawTalentRecords 😂 thanks
I just subbed for this one. You gotta react to Mistreated live by Dio's old band Rainbow
Thanks I’ll try to get to it ASAP ✌️
Dio always very theatrical. Give Black Sabbath Heaven and Hell a try
