I became a DJ fan - oddly - during and after his personal, potential substance abuse issues, and self-imposed hiatus. I had JUST read an article by a British writer who, basically, asked "what is wrong with Dustin Johnson?" I read the entire article, which pointed out his many accomplishments, including having won at least one tournament in every season of his professional career. I hadn't really paid much attention to him before that, but it made me start to watch him, because the writer outlined what a superior physical athlete he was, and even went so far as to ask "Is being 30 and a millionaire his only goal? Is that why he hasn't become one of the greats? (paraphrasing)". It was only a few weeks later that DJ took his hiatus, and I know there are critics who will say mean and terrible things - I don't care. The measure of a man isn't his faults, but how he overcomes them. When I read later on that Wayne Gretzky basically showed up at DJ's house and challenged him "do you want to be good, or do you want to be great?", and then became his personal trainer right up until his return, I knew this was a special moment for a special athlete, being coached by the GREATEST hockey player of all time (props to Gordie). Until then, I feel that DJ was just another gifted athlete who only wanted to work hard enough to afford his lifestyle. Since then, he has been one of the most consistent athletes on the planet! What a difference focus can make in an athlete's life. He isn't going to set any records for Majors won, or overall wins, but - at 20 PGA wins, and 1 Major - he is pretty much a lock for HOF, and he is going to win many more tournaments to come.
Davis: "He did the right thing - called the rules official & blah, blah..." The USGA certainly did NOT do the right thing. Be fair and get a life, guys. Thank goodness Dustin came through - and with such class!
It's terrible that the USGA messed it up, but what Dustin did to get through this and win is incredible! That composure has led him to the success he has now, and deserves!
@@andrewtan5442 Right, but does 'grounded his club' specifically refer to after he'd addressed the ball, and not during the practice stroke? Genuine question, I don't know the rules.
This USGA pres doesn't seem to know what "grounding a club" means. It has to be grounded behind the ball, not off to the side. If I was in Dustin's position and lost the tournament because of a false penalty, I would be suing the USGA for money lost, the vistory, anf to protect the proper use of the rules of the game. This muppet needs to go.
Absolutely amazing video! Perfectly summed up this us open. And in my opinion that was the most entertaining one I have seen. DJ finally got was he deserved, and that's what made it so special
Dustin's redemption, no thanks to the USGA. You guys completely ruined the moment with your inability to interpret your own convoluted rule book. You called Johnson and Westwood liars and overruled your own officials to make a wrong ruling. The best players in the world are terrorized by the rule book. They can't even make a simple drop without calling in an official. How do you expect an average golfer to follow the rules. Nobody really understands them, not even you guys. How about this rule? If the player doesn't actually cause the ball to move, he isn't penalized.
Sloe Bone ik its not the usga, but in the 2013 masters when the official told tiger that his drop was fine, then they penalized him for it, and couldve dq'd him, that's messed up too
They gave him the makeup call though on that drop on #10. It'd be nice to hit a crappy drive in the thick stuff and get a nice drop in the semi rough at no cost. Was a bad call though on the penalty stroke on the putt though
Blake Murray Before the address position he grounded his putter during the practice strokes session. That counts because he was near the ball, and the question is whether or not his actions caused the ball to move. I still think USGA were wrong in their decision though.
Okay, so I'm no expert in golf rules, so I want to clarify that whole penalty thing. As I interpret it, the officials seem to be saying that when Dustin grounded his club, prior to actually addressing the ball, the force of the putter on the green surface close to the ball was sufficient to deform the surface just enough to cause the ball to move slightly once he'd moved his putter and the surface resettled a tiny bit. Given that there was not sufficient wind or any other factor that could cause the ball to move, they had to penalise him. Am I wrong? Everyone is pointing out that he didn't ground the club when he came to actually address the ball, but he definitely did ground the ball prior to that. Does that not count as grounding the ball? Genuine question, I don't know. But you're not allowed to ground your club in a hazard, right? And that doesn't just mean when you're actually addressing the ball, it means when you're taking practice swings etc, right? Here's a quote I found: "Decision 18-2a/30 Question: A player took several practice swings about one foot from his ball which was lying in light rough, and his club came in contact with the ground. He then took his stance, touched grass behind the ball with the clubhead but did not ground the club. At that point the ball moved. The player claimed that no penalty was incurred because he had not addressed the ball. However, the Committee judged that the practice swings and the touching of the grass behind the ball caused the ball to move, and therefore the player incurred a penalty stroke under Rule 18-2a. Was the Committee correct? Answer: It is a question of fact whether the player caused his ball to move and thus incurred a penalty under Rule 18-2a. Because of the practice swings and touching of the grass, the weight of evidence is against the player and therefore the Committee's decision was correct. (Revised)" Obviously this is quite a different circumstance, but it does seem to lend weight to the notion that a player can be penalised for causing a ball to move without ground his club behind the ball. Anyway, like I say, I'm no expert, but I would say that everyone who is so sure they're right that it wasn't a penalty should be a bit more circumspect. EDIT: Also, this is interesting: www.reddit.com/comments/4pilgi
Dustins shots with the driver are seriously crushed. I love this guy. Superb man and golfer. Penalty was a joke. The honesty of the man to call the rules official, but at no time was the putter grounded. NO PENALTY.
They should have never said anything to Dustin Johnson until the end of the round... I personally think them telling him during his round was just them trying give the tournament some drama to get their ratings up.
Dr. Villiam That is probably one of the stupidest things I have heard about that fiasco, it was the USGA that screwed up for no reason at all. And how would that increase their ratings it was the last round of the tournament.
I saw some comments arguing that while Dustin hadn't grounded his club (putter) he had addressed the ball. I disagree. He was in the process of moving his putter behind the ball when you could tell he noticed the ball was starting to move and quickly moved his putter out of the way. Addressing the ball is when when the club is is a customary position when ready to make a stroke (rule that was updated in 2012 and supposedly used in determining if Dustin broke the rule below). "If the golf club is grounded “closely” behind the ball in a position where it would be customary for a player to ground the club prior to making a particular stroke, then the club is considered to have been grounded immediately behind the ball". Dustin's club was not in a position where it would be customary for a player to ground the club prior to making a particular stroke. I think the USGA took the coward's way out and gave him the penalty stroke because they knew it wouldn't affect the outcome of the tournament.
Watching these guys on tv doesn’t do the bunkers justice, played there a couple times, if you hit in a fairway bunkers it’s an automatic 1 shot penalty unless you get super lucky and are in the very back of the bunker, absolute war zone playing there
56:05 - "The video CLEARLY shows he grounded his club" Translation: We have no idea what we're doing but since he still won we won't throw our guys under the bus for being completely incompetent in every way."
But having said all that Mike Davis did do some much needed quick repair work and the USGA has recovered well to go on and set up the most amazing US Opens
Great win this US OPEN for DJ, just cannot get over the stupid penalty thing. It wasnt so much the penalty for me, it was them telling him on the 12th hole that really annoyed me as a viewer. Thats what makes me think DJ is so incredible, having to deal with that stupid situation, push through and win. Well done DJ, you are the man! USGA learn to own your mistakes, instead of trying to justify the situation you were made to look like a bunch of buffoons.
Very harsh on Lowry, the problem wasn't so much his shots, more so that he seemed to hit the wrong clubs on the final day. He was hitting almost all the fairways and greens, but was too far away with his approach shots and his putting game deserted him.
13:12 its not about the most talent in the last 5 holes, I couldn't strongly disagree more what an idiotic statement. he is saying a 15 handicapped player would win because he or she would want it more.
A 15 handicapper isn't going to be in contention in the last 5 holes of a us open though. There are players who lack a lot of talent who have managed to make careers because of what they could do under pressure. Talent gets you in contention but it doesn't win you the competition.
There isn't 15 handicapped players in the U.S. Open. If you're in contention on Sunday at a major you're obviously a great golfer. And he meant that if player A is slightly more talented than player B but player B handles the pressure better, 9 times out of 10 player B is going to win.
This was a great video...so glad i didn't have to listen to Johnny Miller talk through his nose the whole video with mediocre commentary like the Rocco vs. Woods showdown. Also, the USGA still thinks they got that right? what a joke

The USGA would not have assessed that penalty had he been up by one. They were able to take the easy way out since it didn’t affect the outcome. A joke.
I don't think the us Open is the hardest to win because it often favours the long hitters. The True test ist THE OPEN on a Links course. You have to have full control over your irons, putter and maybe your woods. Us Open is more like driver and a 8 Iron or wedge, that is scummy in my opinion
Monumental cock up from USGA officials. No other way to describe it which forced Mike Davis to admit embarrasingly that they had made a big mistake. Lucky for them Dustin played like a Champion down the stretch with the icing on the cake at 18. Otherwise..... it could have been very bad for them. This is happening way to often in tournaments these days where a player gets a wrong ruling from an official or close up tv evidence causes them to backtrack.
Whether or not the penalty was justified (and I don't think it was) you can't have that hanging over a player's head for the remainder of the round, that would be inexcusable at any tournament let alone the US Open. If someone had ended up making a playoff (or worse, winning by a shot) because a penalty was called after the round, can you imagine the outcry? Got to say the R&A pisses all over the USGA these last few years. Good golf shots not getting rewarded because of crazy pin placements isn't tough golf it's defeating the object of the game? Like at Shinnecock Hills? The Open Championship and the US Open are the best majors, different in their own way but the best. Carnoustie played easier this year as we've had the hottest, driest summer since 1976 in the UK. The wind only got up to around 22mph for a few hours on Sunday. This Davis guy seems to be full of his own self importance? Cheers to all the Golfers out there...
Utter bollocks that putter was grounded....it was honestly an inch in the air ffs.....the usga need a head wobble after that and it was an utter disgrace
That penalty is complete bullshit, such a stupid rule, but yet I’ve seen Zach Johnson practice swing and hit it ball on the tee box at the masters and that not be a penalty
That's pathetic to come in the middle of his round after an official has already told him to play and tell him during the most important round of his life that they are going to review it anyway. That's just pompous ass people trying to show their power or influence. It's really a shady part of a beautiful game because it was obvious that he didn't cause that ball to move. I honestly believe they did everything possible to stop him from winning. They had someone in mind they wanted as the poster boy and tried hard to screw DJ. Davis is a pathetic human being

Utter bollocks that putter was grounded....it was honestly an inch in the air ffs.....the usga need a head wobble after that and it was an utter disgrace
USGA made the rules yet they can't decide on them... kinda ruined my US Open Sunday and was pretty pathetic
Fox is so terrible at covering this event
Tanner Gay thanks for your input
notformebeaky aren’t you late for tea? Nobody cares about your opinion.
Thay should never come over to justin and say that not when he did fuck all and thay said play on so that's that
special 📷
you call that "causing a ball to move"? god damn do the ENTIRE USGA need glasses????
43:55 299 Par 3 8th? wtf
USGA is a mess ! All staffs non of them really know all the rules at all . Too many rules and too complicated and confusing at all the time
That penalty is complete bullshit, such a stupid rule, but yet I’ve seen Zach Johnson practice swing and hit it ball on the tee box at the masters and that not be a penalty
