    Very nice $175 ok a little up there. My take on tools. I will pay more if it is worth it. A professional recommendation alone is worth a lot. You have thousands of hours of professional work experience. Making a spot for it in your tool vest. Pretty much wins me over. Another note on this. You already found the ones that did make the cut and saved me tons of time and frustration. So, thanks and keep up the good work. We all appreciate it.

    I'm not a serious woodworker, but trying to overcome a bad tool just makes everything harder. My LN #62 Low-Angle Jack

    Great video. I just moved into a new home where the doors are all messed up. I started working on them with a cheap plane that I picked up at Lowes, but this looks way better.
    Can I use this plane on doors to fix them from sticking?

    Hey Samurai. Just wanted to let you know I finally ponied up and bought this Lie-Nielsen 60-1/2 low angle block plane. It's not cheap but it is SO worth it, after I saved up for it for a long time. I love this thing. I'm right there with you in your moment of block plane zen.

    its awesome looking back at these older videos and seeing the previous projects you made in the background. and i never noticed that door behind you. it always amazes me when i see the sexy wood grain and coloration that you always use... i cant imagine what you spend in wood alone for some of your projects...

    I've got one. It's really nice. I use mine to trim large tennons. It doesn't have an adjustable mouth though, and you don't really want to camber the blade (kind of messes it up for joinery purposes). Therefore its a good idea to get a regular adjustable mouth block plane too.

    Just bought one of these on the strength of your enthusiasm.
    My grandfather's plane has seen me good for 10 years but it was never the best and would need so much work to get it right, I figured I'd use this next plane (which I'll pass on to my son) to make a cabinet for the old one.
    And so the story goes on...

  • @ef2b
    @ef2b 6 років тому

    I find mine extremely difficult to adjust. When the blade tensioner is tight enough to keep the blade from moving while cutting, it then becomes impossible to use the depth adjustment knob. When the tensioner is loose enough to let me use the depth adjustment, the blade often moves that thousandth of an inch when I tighten the tensioner. There is a sweet spot where everything works, but it takes me a bunch of tries on every adjustment to find it.
    Do you have any tips for getting around this?

  • @jayejaycurry5485
    @jayejaycurry5485 7 років тому +1

    Yea, that one seems to offer a lot of features. I never knew that anyone made a rabbeting block plan. While Lie-Nielson tools are not cheap, they are of good quality and a rabbeting block place replaces two tools making it a good buy. Thanx. And, get well soon. You might want to ease up a bit on the cold medicine. ;-)

    • @TheSamuraiCarpenter

      I am sold on pulling saws ever since I questioned the safety of push saws in high school. What design feature of japanese planes makes them more suitable to be pulled rather than pushed? Just the lower friction base grind? I tend to pull my steel block planes as well so I am wondering if a combination design couldnt be a thing.

  • @titanwr

    No doubt an excellent plane. I think they're based off of the old Stanley line from the old days (not the new stuff). Have you tried Veritas from Lee Valley?

  • @AcornFox
    @AcornFox 7 років тому

    I'm fairly new to woodworking and I need a rabbeting plane. I see the Stanley for $75 on amazon, the Veritas for $155 from Lee Valley, and the Lie-Nielsen for $175. Serious question as I have not used either: In what ways is this plane better than the Stanley Bailey 60 1/2? Why so much difference in price? Are they *that nice*?
    My understanding is Stanley Sweetheart is pretty good stuff. Same A2 tool steel for the iron, just looks like a little less time spent on aesthetics (which does have value, don't get me wrong). I appreciate you're not recommending some boutique maker's damascus steel version for $500, but still, $100 is no joke for a n00b.
    Let me know if there's something I'm missing here!

    I've slowly been transitioning from caveman carpentry to Cajun craftsman for a couple decades now and I'm just starting to get see the need for more than one general purpose block plane. I'm also learning, like most hand tools, there is an art to adjustment, proper use and maintenance. I've also found the older hand tools, well-maintained and refurbished have better quality blades, parts and lasting ability.
