I honestly love how the new enemies (Bramble, Swift, Trok, etc.) are presented in the old art style. They really look like part of the original game and are as well ported as the rest.
its weird watching the two fights side by side, I kinda forgot how... barren? the first game looked. they outdid themselves in returns, its incredible. the phase 4 is incredible, too, finally tying mithrix and providence with a motif in the music for their fights (and big spinny). theres just so much about this game.
I could not agree more honestly. I've been playing since like 2015 or 2016 I think? Since before ror2 was even announced, and I've got a fair bit of time in the first game, so seeing them give the game so much love with risk of rain returns made my heart happy honestly. The new 4th phase caught me so off guard but I love it
@@Arcanilumia I only got into ror1 a couple of months before ror2 went into early access, and yet I always admired the pixel art in the first game as I found it charming. seeing it so well made here really was the risk of rain. they did so well
Though not related to the battle itself, the glow-up the backdrop got is absolutely phenomenal. It really does feel like they were able to fully realize what they originally envisioned for the setting, and the new Providence fight is remarkable even just visually.
They definitely made the ending fit the tone more compared to the original game. Music gone, nothing but the sound of the Contact Light blasting off panning to a dead lemurian with the ending message. And they made it more apparent that something DID get onto the ship at the end. Which honestly makes the ending more tragic than anything because the ship never made it back to civil space. Whatever got on it is still a mystery, and who knows if we'll even get that answer.
Now that I think about it yeah something did prolly get on and It's probably a Void Reaver because think about it 1. people think Void Fiend is RoR1 Commando 2. If the Contact Light escaped then where is it 3. We don't see Void Reavers in the first game most likely because they fear the Gods Provi and Mithrix that's why they won't appear while looping on first game and why they only try to Jail the moon AFTER killing Mithrix the Void knows it can't kiill the Gods at least not until a Void Cell manages to give life to a strong enough Void Being before that and why they only go after the Planet's Creatures and Commencement as a whole after the Gods that lived in it died by our hands we have unleashed something horrible into the world and that is the Void we may have temporarily stopped it in SoTV but we are in danger not only from the Void but from the Red Plane as well
@@DarlexGardenWarden I personally don't believe the Void Fiend is the Commando from Risk 1. It's not confirmed anywhere that its him specifically, but it IS A commando. One that was probably there after the Contact Light incident that somehow got trapped in the void and was tortured or corrupted. Unless they retcon it somehow lol
but you're right, most likely the reason we don't see them in the first game is because Providence was still watching over the planet. Providence was probably aware of them yet just like the imps, kept them from interfering with the planet.
@@nathancritz Yeah it's just speculation but we do know Void Reavers are scared shitless of Providence as confirmed in the Bottled Chaos Logbook also it would be cool if Void fiend is actually RoR1 Mando as that would mean that both him and Acrid got re-reunited together in the void and speaking of Acrid I have a headcanon that the reason he's different in 2 is because the Void Cell messed his shape up a bit
@@nathancritz And funny thing with the imps is that he "welcomed" them in the planet and what I mean is that I'm pretty sure it is stated in one of the logs that Provi actually trapped them in Petrichor and they can no longer leave
4th phase caught me offguard so much. I was talking to my brother and killed providence without any big ceremony and proceeded to spam interact trying to leave but nothing happened for what felt like so long. The music started to come back and I was just like “wait what…?” It all just comes back, the stage is entirely different, big fucking lasers all around you with such an explosive music! Yeah it was about the same experience for me. I died when he had about 3k hp left in his 4th phase first time around bc I had no movement speed items and wasn't prepared for a phase 4 but man they did him justice
The coalescence reprisal gives me chills every time. Hopoo games has written such a tragic and beautiful narrative with this once in a lifetime franchise.
Not a single regret, even in his death, more lives were saved with that attack. Who knows how many could have died if that ship reached Petrichor V’s moon
@@thatcyanthing But thats the thing, the ship was never headed towards Petrichor V nor Petrichor's V Moon. In the intro the pilot looks at both the planet and moon and it says "Do not engage". If im not mistaken, the original story is that they were passing by, but Providence thought the Contact Light was heading to the moon, and he feared for his brother Mithrix. Thats why this story is sad, it was all a huge misunderstanding from everyone. Providence fucked up, the survivors, in attempts of making it out of there, killed everything, the creatures, scared and trying to protect their home, killed everything.
@@WolfMeryX Isn't the reason of the attack because of the fact we got a portal with us and because we are destroying Earth and Providence probably thinks of us like he thinks of any Lunar infested creature a disciple to Mithrix or just an unjust killing machine we know Provi wanted to visit Earth but it was probably just to get animals out of there to save them instead of saving us
that new final phase is so fucking awesome oh my god
Agreed, caught me incredibly off guard first time around too (200 hrs in ror1)

Such a glowup honestly, plus the intro cutscene from returns really makes you see providence as more treatening than the original
I wholeheartedly agree, they really nailed the new cutscene honestly. They nailed everything about this game

the nerf to the stunlock from his shockwave attack alone is enough to make returns exponentially superior to the original
