  • So how many times has your foundation gone caky and creasy throughout the day? Mine has too many times to count....but it's not always the foundation's fault....it's often the application. Of course, choosing the right foundation can really help, but if you master the application with a few simple techniques, you'll have much more success, and a flawless finish.

My eight year old son heard you talking about foundation while I was watching this and said he wanted to watch it with me. I was super surprised and we sat side by side watching. After a while he turned to me and asked, “Ok, so what does makeup have to do with building a house and when is she going to start laying the foundation?” 😂 I nearly cried laughing. 😂

Could you please do one of these on your mom. Our older skin can often act horribly with powder. Seems to highlight every line and wrinkle for me. I’m 75

I have seriously learned more about makeup, skincare, and application from you than any other channel I watch. So many influencers are doing first impression videos on all the new foundations that have launched. But, it doesn't matter what foundation you use if you don't know the correct way to apply it. Just BRAVO, Gemma!!
PS I have 4 sponges that I keep in a "rotation", washing after each use and letting it sit up a dry in the cap of a dry shampoo spray. The best cleaner I have ever used is the Elf Charcoal Sponge cleaner. It makes the cleaning SO fast and thorough😀

Hi Gemma. A fabulous video. From a lady of mature age (62) who hasn’t worn makeup for most of her life, you and your mum have been a great inspiration too me. I enjoy putting makeup on now but some days look better than other 😂😂. I’m still using very light foundations as I’m not confident to go for medium to full coverage just yet. I will watch this video a few times before I dive in. Thank you xxxx

Me too! I had just looked in the mirror and silently complained that I looked a little cakey today, then this notification came up! Thanks, Gemma! (And I probably used too much and didn't go over with the sponge after, because I was in a hurry. Which is fine, but it confirmed what I could do better when the extra couple of minutes are available.)

I love your videos! Even in my 20s I was never interested in the “baking” UA-camr style of makeup routines. Now, in my early 30s, I am finding the methods for mature skin far more appealing. I still use very little, but always feel better knowing the best techniques for my skin and style. Thank you for making these! 💖

33 year old here, never put too much into my makeup routine, from choosing to applying. The makeup I did buy the last time, I only wore like once a week, if that, and had it for several years.
So after finding your channel, I got super inspired! I researched all the different ones I wanted and looked at the reviews. Found my picks, bought them (nothing too high end, just from Target - not sure if you are familiar with Target, the makeup is similar to the drugstore selection)
Anyway, today I finally had some time to play around with the new stuff for a bit - using your tips and techniques and recommendations of makeup.
And what it comes down to is: THANK YOU! I watched this video and followed along and it's absolutely amazing! Then I watched the contouring video and that was amazing too!!

Missing out around the nose and mouth. That’s the first thing I’ve been doing wrong. I’m always in such a hurry when I apply my makeup and the older I get the less I can get away with that. I also need to start applying concealer to the back of my hand instead of directly on the face. This was a great video, Gemma. Thank you.

Hi Gemma. Been a fan of yours for a while now however never had the courage to comment, until now. Today is the first day I've put make up on (been nurturing a very dehydrated skin!). I've got the same base brush as you and haven't used it for a while as been obsessed with my zoeva brush. I've followed your advice to apply my foundation today, using the revolution brush, and oh my goodness, what a difference! I used less than half of the foundation I normally would use and my face looks flawless! Everything applied so much better on top too. Only downside is it will take me longer to apply before going to work tomorrow but it will be worth setting the alarm that little bit earlier. I could never get my foundation to look this nice on top of my mineral sunscreen and now it does. So, big thanks from me for doing this video 😊 X

Great tutorial. Before I pat the beauty blender into my skin I always give it a squirt of skindanavia finishing spray straight into the damp sponge and that really helps melt the foundation into my skin (I am 47). This seems to be the best way to get the foundation to really become one with the skin. At the very end instead of spraying my face I do the same thing and it melts my blush / highlighter / bronzer into the foundation and it makes it a) last all day and blends everything so it’s not three seperate products but just melded together. I feel good that I already (mostly) follow this way of doing my foundation as your skin looks amazing always

For areas like the nose (where it seems we all have the problem of the disappearing makeup), I’ve heard that using a “sticky” or “tacky” primer just in that area works. I just ordered the e.l.f. Jelly Pop Dew Primer ($8 at Ulta) to do just that. Fingers crossed! 🤞 Here’s a description of the primer:
“Jelly Pop Dew Primer has a unique gel texture that works like glue to grip makeup to ensure it stays put.”

Another very informative video and I thank you!! My t-zone area doesn't like me as well as my temple areas. My temples will get cakey throughout the day if I'm not careful to put the bare minimum on them & then when I smile throughout the day I look like I have wrinkles that truly don't exist there. Same with t-zone so I will be taking this instruction to heart as I had always started with the middle & worked outward. I visit one of my dozen doctors tomorrow & am going to practice this before church this coming Sun. I've found I only need 1 pump on back of hand the majority of the time unless I want to build up. I'll be sure to use my damp sponge afterwards as well. I'm a pat on girl as my skin is very sensitive w/my brushes. The concealer can be a bit of a bear as I can't go up too high under lash line either. If I'm not wearing shadow then I will color correct my easy to see purplie veins on lids before foundation. Otherwise that's my only issue besides a couple of wisdom spots I've been fading over time w/a little vitamin C. I need to be careful w/vitamin C I've found! I do have a fine line, probably from sleeping on right side too much, where my cheek & undereye meet. That's tricky! I still do what you showed way back w/your mum but have tweaked it a little. Not able to find many colors lighter than my porcelain skin so I use the lightened on the double sided e.l.f. concealer/highlight even if I don't use the concealer. It brightens nicely & my face concealer is my MAC hands down so far. The RCMA is heaven & so glad I found that out from you! I've been using it to set lightly undereye & face while still barely making a dent in the bottle. I LOVE it & VERY affordable!! So I'm going to try these tidbits you've gone over here & am excited hoping I'll get a longer wear from my foundations, especially the expensive ones lol, w/out it pooping out in my problem areas after maybe 6hrs. The Smashbox oil last forever too, worth the price there. Since using oil cleanser & my skincare day/night routines mostly using The Ordinary, my complexion has gotten even more youthful. Freaking people out when they find out my age!! Thanks again Gemma for this vid & all you do! Must sound stalkerish but I think we'd be friends if I lived across the pond. Hey, you could help me find a kind, funny man as if you're this good w/makeup/skincare, he'd be a winner. Be well.🤗❤✌😜👌xx

I used to use a product in the US called Blur. It was a drug store brand (I can't recall which one). I liked it for how my texture looked, but it didn't help skin tone. I also used a product from Masengill for the same purpose or as a primer that was called an anti-chafing gel. It was meant to prevent "Chub Rub" of the thighs, but it was a nice budget alternative to the Smashbox Primer.

I honestly find foundation so much work. Tend to skip it all together and only use my age rewind concealer. I find it daunting because I don’t have time to do contouring. Every video I look at makes contouring a must when you wear foundation. Do I really need to contour?

Great video Gemma, I learn something new every time I watch you. My pores on my nose and chin are so large and I use blurring primers and by hour 3 all makeup is off and those pores look like moon craters! Any suggestions would be appreciated. I will slow the makeup process down and take my time. Your look lovely. How was your Mom's vacation, tell all hello and love to Seth and Bea

Hi Gemma, lots of great tips in this one! Have you ever done a beginners tutorial? I don't recall seeing one but I may have missed it. I have recommended you to a few of my teen sons friends that are just really starting to explore makeup. I have told them about your in depth explanations into skin care and how you make thing like contouring seem less daunting. I do hope they love your channel is much as I do! Peace, Love and Happiness!!!

Wow! Amazing video! So well explained! This helps sooo much! 😊 Do you always use 2 different setting powders underneath the eye and on your face in general? Loooove the videos in which you explain "how to" because often one does not know how to handle the products to look good with it! I'd love more such videos (lips, mascara etc.) By the way I also liked the bronzer, concealer video 😊

Hi, I like the Secret Brightening powder for under the eyes, but to be honest it's not that much better than the RCMA so you could use that for both xxx

    Pretentious wafting... LOL.
I'm curious though. Why use a highlighter and then a concealer? I have mature skin and have never tried a highlighter at all. I've always been afraid of putting too much product under my eyes, but it worked beautifully on yours.
