    Great video. Thank you. I just bought 2 white "rose" hydrangea. Had them where it received 6 or more hours of sun. But it looked like the leaves were getting sun burned. So now I moved it to a more shady spot. I will keep an eye to make sure its 4 to 6 hours of morning sun. My yard isnt too shady so not sure where to put them. I love them. They are so pretty. I am hoping to keep them for a long time.

    I've been racking my brain to figure out what happened to my hydrangeas this year. I mentioned to my husband that they bloom on old wood. Once I explained what that meant he said..."Oh. That would be why they didnt bloom. I cut them back." 😆 I was so relieved to know what happened that i couldnt get mad. 🤣🤣🤣 Looking forward to next year!

    I have a small front yard so I've been cutting my 5 hydrangea right to the ground late fall early winter (Vancouver). Most have an excellent bloom late July early August but there's two that have nothing. They're super healthy and still look nice but it would be nice to get them all blooming.

    I have Endless Summer hydrangeas that bloomed so beautifully for several years. BUT, in fall, my husband was cutting them back after they were frosted over and the leaves turn black to within about a foot from the ground. The WHOLE plant!!! The greenery grows back to huge wide bushes, but not one flower comes back anymore.

    I have a strawberry hydrangea and It's two years old, maybe 3. I need to move it. When can I move it? Is now the best time? I live in Iowa so it has not started growing yet. I probably ruined it. I had to cut the flowers off because my neighbors don't take care of their yards. The city has fined them twice. Spider webs came over the fence from all their mess grown up and covered my hydrangea. I had to cut all that off. The blooms are shaped like a strawberry but the color is gorgeous. I don't want to lose it. Thank you.

    • @stevecorcoran6248
      @stevecorcoran6248 7 років тому

      A Z Do not be pressured into committing "Crepe Murder!" That is don't cut them back drastically. Remove the spent heads after blooming and then shape them as you see fit. Some people severely cut the branches back and that creates an unnatural growing pattern with the plant. You can find proper pruning techniques on UA-cam. Good luck and enjoy!

    Hi - your videos are very helpful, thank you. I bought a house with some hydrangeas in the front. I think they are an older variety (old wood blooming only). I notice in the spring that when new growth comes in there are always a lot of bare sticks jutting up. They are very ugly, If the plant has lots of green leafing at the base can I cut out any wood that has nothing going on? Thank you.

    • @gardenanswer
      @gardenanswer  7 років тому +3

      Do the sticks have any growth at all on them? If it looks like they have buds, I would give them extra time because that's where you will get the blooms (if they are the type that bloom on old wood). You can also use your finger nail (or your clippers) to gently scrape the top layer of bark off a branch in a little spot- if you see green, there is still life in the stems and they may leaf out yet, but if it all looks brown you can cut them out. If there doesn't appear to be any new growth forming, the hydrangea might just have experienced too hard a winter, and you can cut them back. Good luck! :)

This year June 2nd, 2022 only twigs, no leaves or buds in them. Is it dead if it is I will throw it out. Hydrangeas I just live but not good at growing them. I have a panicle type hydrangea like that and it sits in water every late winter/spring and it doesn't hurt it at all. They are a little slow to get going, but hopefully you saw lots of growth and blooms, seeing how your post is a couple months old. From what I've read, the hydrangeas we have were bred from wild cultivars that live on the edges of streams (hydra=water). It sounds like your plant is doing exactly what it's supposed to do. The panicle types don't really grow from the very bottom like the macrophylla types, but rather sprout out from and on limbs that already exist. You can cut your limelight back by a third in the spring and you will get flowers on all the new growth. I like to wait until I see some green growth, that way I can trim out any dead branches first, then ones that are crossing over one another, then ones for how I want to shape it. These are wonderful, easy, and forgiving plants. Hope this helps, albeit late to your post!

    I live in an area with a lot of deer. I have tried everything. The only thing that works is fencing so save your money and dont get the snake oil products.

      Get yourself panicle hydrangeas like Vanilla Strawberry. The deer eat every single bud off of mine every winter and it still blooms faithfully every summer on new wood!

    Hello! Last winter, I drastically cut back my hydrangeas because they were diseased. This year, they have come up vigorously but they are not blooming. If I do not cut them back will they bloom next year?

    • @SweetStuffOnMonarchLane
      @SweetStuffOnMonarchLane 4 роки тому +1

      They should make buds on the growth they made this year and those buds should flower for you next summer, barring any other problems. Give them lots of good, organic compost high in phosphorus (for blooms) right away if you haven't done so already this summer.

    I have a hydrangea bush that hasn't grown in a year, there is just a bunch of the wooded stems. I was about to rip it out until I noticed new growth at the bottom. Should I pull the wooded stems out?

      some hydrangeas only bloom on old stems some bloom in both young and old stems...
      if you wanna know if that woody is alive try to cut on the edge of stem if it ddnt have leaves and see if the middle stems is watery and alive surely its not a rotten stem...

      @@daisyagcanas-cansenaje3065 I live near you bought mine in malanday, got it with the bloom.. surely it can live and bloom in our country but the caregiver/store told me not to put this one directly on sun as it will burn and always water It.. I bought it with 2 bloom 1 white 1 light blue on the same plant.. old stick dont have foliage at that moment and right now I got a lot of foliage below the bloom.near the bottom hope it will rebloom next year as I read that if it got stress from repotting it might take 1-2 years to rebloom

      @@lowcost549 you're right. I tried placing it under the sun (afternoon sun) and I noticed the leaves started drooping so now I put them in shade in the afternoon and it's okay now except for the powdery mildew. I modified the baking soda solution and it got burned a little (imagine if I followed the recommended recipe 😊). Mine hasn't bloomed yet, maybe it will by next summer. But I am getting new leaves on old stems so maybe my hydrangea is the one that blooms on old stem. Anyways, I am really excited and looking forward to it blooming. I also bought hydrangea seeds. I hope it will grow too. This a new hobby for me and I am really liking it.

      @@daisyagcanas-cansenaje3065 mine is just in a shade .. I bought a meter that test soil moisture and ph soil with light tester they use solar panel as receiver and as long as I get 500-1000 shade all the plant I places there is alive and got a lot of leaves even without direct sunlight..
      I bought it on lazada name is 3 in 1 soil tester. aroubd 250+ pesos and its working good for watering as you dont over water the soil. and can monitor id its wet-moist-dry under the roots.. recommended for plants is moist. as well as using the light tester which shows a meter if the shaded area got enough sunlight its good to use if you want your hydrangea fully bright shaded.. and some plants indoor
