  • Blake Cannon joins me for the 2nd part of this 4-part series covering short game, as we look to help you get out of bunkers more consistently! Sand traps can present a unique challenge for many, but with the proper setup and technique, these shots can be quite easy. We hope you enjoy this addition to the series!

Hello Milo, my interpretation of your stock swing is: “sink first with pressure shift and then turn your chest through to the finish”. Is this different apart from the set-up? My impression looking at the video is that it looks as if you use more of an arm swing, but I might be wrong.

This is much more hands wrists and arms.

I really like your comments about shaft angle and plane (steepness or lack thereof) of attack. So--your sand looks a lot thinner and more compact than the sand at my course, LaPaloma in Tucson, or the sand I encountered recently at the Gallery. How do you adjust for thicker, softer, deeper sand other than applying more speed ?

With setup. As the San gets softer it requires a shallower bottom of the arc necessitating a setup with the chest a little less forward and less weight on the front foot

Where do you aim club entry?

Depends on the firmness of the sand and if the technique is good it doesn’t matter too much as long as it’s before the ball.

Is the bunker shot still ball first?

You should be able to still open it up a bit, maybe not quite as much but you gotta get on your lead side and learn to deliver the handle and hosel so you don't shank or thin it.

You now need to give a lesson to the guy across the way. Or get some helmets

I very much value Blake's coaching as he has one of the best short games I have ever seen and he was a guest for this series, but we appreciate your thoughts and thank you for watching!

Had a lesson with Blake he has great playing skills obviously but also was able to identify my faults and provide drills to improve. In fact at his suggestion he recorded a short video of areas to focus that I still watch when practicing short game.
