I was so frustrated with my pre-lit tree. I was ready to skip Christmas this year. I watched this video and bought this LightKeeper thing and it worked immediately. I showed the dude at my local Ace store the video description and he found the tool. The tool had great instructions and multiple useful functions. You can use it to test fuses, plugs, bulbs, and it can detect voltage. It comes with batteries and a little compartment with 10 extra bulbs.
Great to hear it! It's going to save a lot of lights from being tossed away. Merry Christmas!
Some helpful info for anyone that cares is that these light sets are wired in series, meaning that the circuit is dependent on the electricity making it's way through each bulb. When a filament burns out, the circuit used to open but the newer bulbs have a bypass shunt in them which is supposed to keep the circuit working. The shunts also open up and this tool repairs the shunt. One other thing to know is that as bulbs burn out, the voltage increases in the remaining bulbs and that can cause them to burn out. So best to stay on top of burned out bulbs...good luck.
I had the tool for years never used it correctly until now, works great.
Wonderful explanation from beginning to end, which included the difference between incandescent lights compared to LED lights. Thank you.
Can't believe how well this thing worked!!! It has saved me literally HOURs of work. Thank you so much!
That's great to hear!
Just bought one of these at our local Ace Hardware, and it saved our pre-lit tree from being disposed early! The tool works great once you get the hang of it. Thanks for the video!
Aaron, that's great to hear! Agreed, hang on to it. May come in handy on string lights you decorate your home with this season.
I dont know why anyone would want a pre lit tree!
This video saved our tree! Had 3 unlit strings of lights out of about 12. Bought this tool (from HD). I got two strings to lite with the clicker thing. The last string was a bit more stubborn and needed many burned out bulbs replaced. As the instructions say, more than 4 or 5 bulbs burned out on one line puts a major strain on the rest of the bulbs burning them out quicker. And this tool has a bulb checker!
Thank you Ace Hardware; can't believe how well this tool works, fixed our lights in about 30 seconds!
Hey Mickie - That's what we want to hear! Saving another tree from hitting the curb!
This was helpful, thanks bud
Thank you so much
Great video!
Wouldn't you know this tool is out everywhere I've looked? Hoping their is an ACE hardware near me and they have it, then let's hope I can fix my try. I love my tree, haven't seen one like it.
Did it without the tool just plugged the light in and out 3 times and eventually came across one light that it worked on and it lit all of the section up. Ty for the guide.
There is no guide with my tree
Thank you about stating the tree needed to be plugged in the last 4 videos never mentioned that
Thank you! You saved my beautiful tree ❤️
Vero Vale - That is great to hear!
I got the fuse out but getting it back in was frustrating
What if one of the sockets are shaped differently and won’t fit in the light keeper pro?
I love this tool. It works great…..most of the time. What else could I do to repair a string of (incandescent) lights on my pre-lit tree that won’t light??? The fuses are good. Replacing the whole string is not an option. I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks!
Have you checked to see if the bulbs are burnt out? And if that's not the case, maybe the fuse in the bulb has gone bad?
@@AceHardware I did. It was a burned out bulb! I find that it is very seldom one of the blown fuses in the plug. Thanks so much!
My local hardware store has very little Christmas stuff and no lights.
Thank you ACE Hardware. My Holiday tree is now fully lit. My kids can't wait for Holiday Man to make his way down our smoke stack and leave wrapped gifts for them. Of course they are leaving out Holiday Cookies for Holiday Man as it is a Holiday Custom. Merry Holiday!!
Merry Holiday to you!
It's MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!
Where can i get some of those bulbs.... Some of mine burned
Hi Samuel, You can check the holiday section of your neighborhood Ace! www.acehardware.com/store-locator
So, I have to pull hundreds of lights still on our huge tree? Makes more sense to just cut the line out and re string a fresh set
He says "with the shunt replaced..." How exactly do you replace the shunt when it is inside the glass bulb?
Apologies for the confusion! The shunt gets new life from the use of this tool. Not replaced.
Can't things be fixed without the tool!?!?!?!?! Ugh! Who has one of those on hand?!?!?!?! Sry, im so frustrated rn.
Hi Rachelle, The Light Keeper Pro is a good investment for years to come! Another option is to replace with LED lights. They are more durable and of course cost effective!
If my tree has LED bulbs does this method still work?
Hi Michael,
Same method, but you will want to use the LED Light Keeper Pro. Here's a link to the product to learn more: bit.ly/3Uve4AN
Ok what tool is that & where can I purchase it??
The tool we used is the LightKeeper Pro

Best of luck with your Christmas tree!
Can you go a little further, what is a shunt? and how do you replace it?
Thanks for that feedback! We'll be sure to cover in a future video.
I’m confused, as usual. I have the top of my tree that won’t light up. A few days ago half of it lit up, and now it’s all out. It’s pretty new and I paid a lot for this tree! Ugh !
What is the tool called?
Light keeper pro
Which holiday do you put up a tree for?
Festivus maybe. Wait ... that's a pole
2:09 burnt out bulb
I tried it didn't work for me 😭
When I plug the shunt into the gun it wont light the strand even after 100 clicks! Now what?!
Hi Amber,
Have you checked to see if the fuse in the plug is good? In some Christmas Trees there are a couple of plugs you need to connect, so make sure you check those in addition to the final one that goes in the wall. Here's how to check the fuses, go to 1:07 in this video ua-cam.com/video/ziu5A4p2qQk/v-deo.html
If that doesn't work, keep going around to other bulbs. In the case of the Christmas Tree we used, we needed to repair several sections to bring that tree back. Even then, some of the bulbs were burnt out. They kind of look like charcoal is in the bulb. Replacing the bulbs may be the issue as well. Hope this helps!
There is another video by English Gardens that goes into more detail on using the Voltage detector feature. It’s more involved. I’m going to have to try it on the bottom section of my tree that has 6 branches out and the clicker function hasn’t worked on them. The clicker method has worked for years on the rest of the tree. Also, having a 7.ft tree means you need a LOT of spare bulbs. I bought a pack of 100 on Amazon. The stores only carry a set of 5 and it gets expensive. They would rather you buy a strand of lights or a whole new tree.
What’s a holiday tree?
Did not work, any other solution?:((
Oh no, you may need to look at the wires and see if there are signs of wear and tear. Another option is keep removing more bulbs and using the light keeper.
It’s a CHRISTMAS tree
It’s a CHRISTMAS Tree. Without CHRISTMAS this tradition would not exist.
CHRISTMAS 👼🏼🎄🎅🏻
Like 🎅🎅❄❄❄❄🎄🎄🎄🎄☃️☃️☃️☃️
You replace bulbs because of voltage drop, not to make it sparkly.
So are you cleaning/repairing the shunts are replacing them? His explanation isn't clear.
Once we tried using the light keeper pro on the bulb socket, we then moved to trying to replace the bulb. Hopefully, that helps?
It’s a “Christmas” tree… say it, it’s OK
hOlIdAy tReE
Doesn't work! Very frustrating need more information! Sorry but I hate led lights they are ugly! Why can't they make them soft LED lights!
All these bozos crying about it being called a holiday tree LOL
Halliday Tree!!!! WTF are you talking about!!! It’s a CHRISTMAS tree!!!
Say Christmas man. Say it!
It's a Christmas tree, actually.
O
1:34 for the haters
Ace is woke “holiday tree”
Although Lou off the cuff referred to it as a holiday tree, the video is titled Christmas tree. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for the help. It's called a "Christmas" tree by the way, Lou.
Stop being a snowflake ❄️
I use a Christmas tree. I don’t think this video using a holiday tree will work. And what holiday are you talking about thanksgiving for example. You should call it a Christmas tree.
Although Lou off the cuff referred to it as a holiday tree, the video is titled Christmas tree. Thanks for watching!
I’ll just throw the tree out
It’s a CHRISTMAS TREE!! Not a holiday tree. Enough of being p.c.
I appreciate the video but calling the CHRISTMAS TREE a holiday tree was highly annoying.
Shut up karen
Lol, must suck having what people call a tree upset you snowflake
He is being politically correct because he does do tv and radio shows in Chicago and owns many ace hardware. Stores soooooo he's got 2 do it lol
Get over yourself!
My tree stays up all year around lol
A holiday tree…good grief!!!
Bought the tool, did absolutely no good whatsoever. Absolute waste of money.
😆
Didn't work for me either
Since your using it on a holiday tree it isn't likely to work on mine. I have a Christmas tree. Maybe I will try out the clickie tool thingie and just pretend it's a radar detector.
😂😂😂
happy holidays magat
snowflake
😂😂
Not helpful at all just an advertisement for some stupid tool
What the fuck is a Holiday Tree?
It's a Christmas tree btw
It is a Christmas tree, do better Lou.
Since i have Christmas tree I guess it won’t work on mine.
Dear Ace Hardware:
IT IS A CHRISTMAS TREE. Always has been, always WILL be. It’s a several hundred year old tradition established by European Christians.
Jews and other religions having different winter celebrations don’t CARE if the world calls a merrily decorated pine tree a Christmas Tree!!
Whoever wrote your little script needs to get over themselves and face the Real World. 🤦🏻♀️😣
Signed,
Loyal CHRISTian
Why can't he call it a Christmas tree???
Not a holiday tree. It’s a Christmas tree
Who cares what it’s called? Big fucking deal.
@@MrAwesomedude808 LOL
WTF is a "holiday tree?"
It’s a Christmas Tree not a “Holiday Tree” 🤦♂️
“Have a holly jolly holiday.”
“We wish you a merry holiday, we wish you a merry holiday...”
“Oh holiday tree, oh holiday tree...”
“It’s beginning to look a lot like holiday!...”
Yeah, it’s Christmas. “Holiday trees” are for shunts! Shunt isn’t a derogatory word but it sure sounds like it.
Merry Christmas !
What’s the tool called ?
