The sustain pedal (shown in video) is not used in this performance.
The effect is achieved by holding down the syncopated (anticipated
beat) notes for their full durations. To use the sustain pedal for this
purpose destroys the musicality of the piece.
“ . . . all unnecessary movements must be avoided, for every obliquity of position, every grimace, and every useless gesture, have a disadvantageous influence on the hands and fingers.”
" . . . The feet should rest on the ground, near the pedals, but without touching them; children must place their feet on a foot-stool adapted to their height.
Czerny’s School Pt1 1839
“ . . . Above all things,” says Mozart, “ a player should possess a quiet and steady hand, the natural lightness, smoothness, and gliding rapidity of which is so developed, that the passages flow like oil . . . all notes, graces, accents, &c., must be brought out with fitting expression and taste.”
The Art Of Pianoforte Playing (By Ernst Pauer) 1877.
" [1] GENERAL DIRECTIONS
[i] Give each note its proper count
[ii] The bass must be kept firm and smooth on the counts 1. 2. 3. 4.
[iii] Avoid playing too fast. Ragtime should be played at slow march tempo.
[iv] For convenience and uniformity, all arrangements are in 2-4 time."
Winn's Practical Method of Popular Music: Rag and Jazz Piano Playing. [1913 ~ 1920].
"Slow march time" was generally between 90 and 110. That would be a suitable
tempo to accompany the two-step, which was the basic ragtime dance of these years.

I pace this piece at about 100bpm
