Good point. There is a huge price difference. I have it on my BMW and love it. The display is amazing. No issues with the Florida sun. The only thing with the display is you can't wear polarized glasses. May not be a big deal for most people, but I had to change my lenses. I would love to see this standard as I think it is a lot safer and more driver friendly.
Another awesome data for a HUD would be a device that measures distance to the car in front of you. Then computes using your car speed and displays it as time to potential crash etc. Also would be awesome if when following another car, the HUD shows where they are and how far so that you dont necessarily need to drive slow when having a "convoy". A device that detects approaching objects in the blindspot would be nice too (disabled when speed is low like when parking).
a lot of higher end cars already have adaptive cruise control and brake assisted frontal collision warning, which is based off sonars shooting out of the front of the car to measure distance to the front. no need for HUD for this. a potential collision happens so fast that your eyes' reaction time would be too slow - the whole point of having the car's computer brake for you.
Better to get this built in. The BMW has this built into the dash and does multiple colors, as well as shows more information. You can navigate radio, phone calls, etc all via voice or steering wheel controls. I think you would need more then GPS info to make this worth it, especially given the install headaches and all the wires.
The BMW unit is a $ 4,000 minimum option. I love it but not that much. The Nav is over 2 grand then another $1400 for the heads up. I think it will be standard on the new 35i 4 series.
There are smartphone apps ( HUD Awesome ) that display speed by reflecting the readout right on to the windshield from the smartphone placed on the dashboard..
Its image plane is too close to your eyes so every time you look at it your eyes readjust the focus and will lose concentration on the road. That will be a safety issue. And for those in BMW it is projected at least 2 meters away from the windshield.
I'd rater just use the phone itself to reflect onto the screen...less wires and better resolution. If a call comes in, it can still be answered via voice command, and will help prevent texting and driving since you won't be able to type on the device while it is on your dash.
This thing only works in unison with garmin nav. Does not plug into cars obd. And it's always nice to have a separate piece of equipment instead of using your smartphone for. Smartphone: put it on the dash, take it off, put it on, get a call and take it off. Screw that.
It would be nice if it would show a full color 3D display like the actual Garmin GPS. I'm not gonna pay $200 for a green 1 color monochrome display with a directional arrow.
It is now $99 on Microsoft website, the HUD+ is 179 which includes the Garmin Nav app for your smartphone. Drawbacks are no built in battery and it is useless without a Smartphone so if you lose cell signal it won't help you.
I'll just use my 12" tablet instead. I have it positioned of to my right out of my direct vision, and a little low. Works great, and it's no worse than looking at my Speedometer as far as taking my eyes off the road.
Why would you buy one of these? When the're free apps on Android. That do the same thing yet better. And if you need to mount to dash #m velcro works the best.
Directions too minimal. I would need more details such as names of upcoming streets I wud actually be turning on like those actually shown on my phone in GPS in maps. Those arrows alone wud confuse me. Lol
that plastic shield ruins it 110% Ain't looking at that garbage! Have it projected on the glass is the only option just need to figure out a way to get around the double image laminated glass produces
Garmin always releases products to the market that dont work very well in practice. I remember their first traffic avoidance only worked in 3 major cites. Thousands will buy this and learn to loath this company as much as I do.
Watch out - putting that piece of film on your windshield would be illegal in many states. You may think "no one will know", which is true, until you get into an accident, to which you'll be exposed and subsequently be found at fault no matter what, with fines, judgments, and possibly prison time.
My 2012 Prius had an amazing HUD. It would display a miniature map, current speed, and my MPG in a nice crisp display. I can't understand why the Garmin's HUD looks like crap. Those arrows and limited information looks so dated. I think HUDs are the best thing in car since power windows but this particular product is a cheap attempt compared to what other cars offer.
Sorry not impressed. Why not spend that $200+ for this on a very good Car gps or expensive hiking handheld gps? Oh I have never relied on my Iphone for gps navigation.
When the projector becomes the size of a quarter and has multiple colors I will consider wasting my money on another poor quality Garmin product. Even looking at the video I can tell what will break and when. Garmin has the most horrendous quality control of any modern electronic manufacturer. I have owned 4 products from them. Not one has worked properly out of the box. Always firmware issues. As soon as the the firmware is painfully corrected the hardware fails within a year. Total Crap.

I love the idea, but I think its far to early to run out and buy one. It's a bit too bulky as well as quite expensive.
It would be nice if it would show a full color 3D display like the actual Garmin GPS. I'm not gonna pay $200 for a green 1 color monochrome display with a directional arrow.

I think Ill wait till a More advanced better designed one comes out!
$149? Thats a steal!
The future is here, weve been waiting
Perfect, and easy to use, make driving fun
Why in the world would they put the power plug on the left side?
I'll just use my 12" tablet instead. I have it positioned of to my right out of my direct vision, and a little low. Works great, and it's no worse than looking at my Speedometer as far as taking my eyes off the road.
Navdy looks sick
Brother , congrats, very well explained. Thanks
new bmw cars have real nice hud nav
Actually, actually, actually . . .
Hopefully someone at Cnet *actually* mentioned this to him.
Need kilometer info on it and ability to use mapping without cellar data connection....
BMW owns the HUD game
projection is to small. i would need to focus too much on the HUD, than the road
Aveo?
Thanks. Good review.
Oh goodnesssss, swivel?
Can I change it to Km instead of miles?
There are cars with HUDs built in already.
Y pay 200 for a navigation wen you have a smartphone because you need a smartphone to run it
Nice use of your breeze card, lol.
doesn't work anymore on youtube
$50 for an app??!?!?!?!?
They can make it much better
how can I download the maps of street pilot or navigon to my experia Z3, forget the apps
Who would want that big stickypad on their windscreen??
Does not outside cellphone tower range. Would be better if it was hooked up to a real GPS.
Why would anyone buy this? My navigation tells me what street I am on, speed I'm going, how long before I need to turn and when to turn, all by voice.
just use your phone larger screen is better. look inti play store HUD display. they good as cool. i use it too
nice i wish to get hud for sygic
why are we funding this?
I agree, this technology will pe perfected in time.
Nooooooooo! UA-cam has ads on mobile now!!!!
Why would you buy one of these? When the're free apps on Android. That do the same thing yet better. And if you need to mount to dash #m velcro works the best.
50 dollars for the app? Wouldnt it just be smarter to make the device itself 200 dollars
Yes.
That looks 1980s compared to my smartphone.
Yeah, like when better ones are integrated into our cars.
there is no way for android mobiles to download the app from I tunes
Adblock?
total waste of money. Just get an app that puts your phone in mirror mode, stick the reflector on the windscreen and off you go.
Dude! Nail clippers! Please use it...
CNET, appreciate your reviews but please use speakers that can speak rather than thpeak tho I can underthtand them better.
cool gun
Directions too minimal. I would need more details such as names of upcoming streets I wud actually be turning on like those actually shown on my phone in GPS in maps. Those arrows alone wud confuse me. Lol
this looks very promitive. When are they going to make something right the first time? sheesh
always giving the piblic downgraded stuff
Or then again u could just buy a normal satnav for a fraction of the price !!
"so the numbers display up through...the thing..."
Good Review
that plastic shield ruins it 110% Ain't looking at that garbage! Have it projected on the glass is the only option just need to figure out a way to get around the double image laminated glass produces
Would be nice if it were removable from the base because this wouldn't stay in the car for very long in today's world.
too much money for a complicated GPS than the regular one.
You should it used it on the road , I won't be carrying that on my hands
Garmin always releases products to the market that dont work very well in practice. I remember their first traffic avoidance only worked in 3 major cites. Thousands will buy this and learn to loath this company as much as I do.
Yeah I'd rather not have an extra cord running in front of my instruments.
Why bother when you got the phone with million times better display...
Multi reflections are a distracting pain in the butt

I'm in the UK so it's cool 😆

Antuan - "Actually" is the "you know" and "kind of" of the 2010's. You needlessly used "Actually" 16 times. Wow! Otherwise it was a good review.
Well. At leastht it has thum Twivell and Twitht for your Thmartphone. Walscally garmin
not worth $200 POC
Damn
Way to much money

ACTUALLYYYY
Waze. Mount for your phone. Nuff' said. Forget $145 for this.
Google glass does it better
Mingulus
This device is a joke. Too small, rather wait for a better more advanced device that can display better.
Kaspersky Internet Security 2013
Garmin should remove power cord and put strong lithium battery in this , anyway cool device
great..... it wont works for me cuz I live in the stone age and dont have smart phone, still using stupid phone >

Good review, bad product

What a waste
This is stupid. Rather have a phone stand in place of that retro crap. Plus you could use voice commands for Android
Rip Off !!!
I agree. you use up your phones Data and can't see the intersections. I think I will stick with the Garmin that I bought 7 years ago. it's free to use
completely useless
don't buy it its crap
