- This lovely Mary Kaye Hard-Tail Stratocaster was the very favorite personal guitar of the great Fender Master Builder, John English. It weighs just 7.50 lbs. and has a comfortable nut width of between 1 5/8 and 1 11/16 inches and a scale length of 25 1/2 inches. Original late 1958 / early 1959 one-piece ash body, contoured on back and lower bass bout and finished blond. Original (June 1957) one-piece fretted maple neck with a wonderfully huge "'57 soft "V" profile. Maple fretboard with 21 (later) medium frets and black dot position markers. Small headstock with decal with Fender "spaghetti" logo in gold with black trim and "STRATOCASTER" in black beside it and with "ORIGINAL Contour Body" decal at the ball end of the headstock. Original individual single-line Kluson Deluxe tuners with oval metal buttons (stamped inside: "D-169400 / Patent No."). Original single gold-plated "butterfly" string tree. Original gold-plated four-bolt neck plate with the serial number "-20805" between the top two screws. Three original white 'ABS plastic-covered black-bottom single-coil pickups with staggered polepieces and nicely balanced outputs of 6.05k, 5.66k and 5.67k. Original single-layer white plastic pickguard (.060 inches thick) with eight screws. Three controls (one volume, two tone) plus three-way pickup selector switch, all on the lower treble side of the pickguard. Original white ABS plastic Stratocaster knobs with 'greenish' lettering. Original Fender combined 'six-saddle' bridge/tailpiece with through-body stringing. The neck has a pencil mark of "6-57," and the neck pickup cavity has "Blonde" written in blue pencil under the finish. The potentiometers are stamped "304 720" and "304 732" (Stackpole, April and May 1957). All hardware gold-plated.
Seeing a guy being so in his element like this is incredibly inspiring, whether you're a guitar player or not. These videos pick me right up when I'm down!
Lovin' the improv and the Bowie! Fresh Phil X is fresh!
They call him Phil X because what he does with the guitar is always X rated!
This is perfection. The guitar that is!
Straight up 100 proof ROCK AND ROLL!
Man the sound effects are just the cherry on top of this vid
As always, leaves me grinnin' ....and a-pickin'. You are a piece of work, Phil.
You totally did John's old guitar justice.🇺🇸⚔️🍕🍺👍👍
I was just thinking to myself "I should go on their page and request Foxey Lady for a future video", and literally as soon as I thought that he started playing it. That was awesome!

Phils rendition of Golden Years actually sounds better than Bowies...The "Angel" just seems right out of place on bowies...Kudos Phil!
Definately my guitar inspiration
Love the title
I am NOT a strat kind of guy, BUT WOW!! I dig the shit out of that guitar!! phile knows how to work a guitar!! He makes that fucking thing sound mighty fine!!
the gun sound fx was awesome
This is my new favorite version of "I'm Down".
'Golden Years' ...oh YES !
damn if its a fender master builders favorite guitar, you know its good!
Lord a lot of this feels like a Bandiera gig at the height of summer on the beach.
(You should be there.)
gotta love fender ! clean tone is perfect! ( according to my hear )
not try to be a fan boy here
but everytime i check out a gibson review always review it with distortion!
@bigfish0886 They do make a few still, The MIM and CS Robert Crays, the Billy Corgan is a hardtail, Jim Root strat is a hardtail. They did make American Standards with a HT option up until a few years ago, but they were discontinued because they just don't sale that well.
Hard tail through the body strings would have made more sense for Mary Kaye back in the day, since she played mostly passing jazz chords. Dunno if she actually ever had a hard tail one though, ha. She was amazingly talented, she could sing very well and fly on jazz chords at the same time without watching her hands, very talented, classy and personable. Her Mary Kaye Trio was a great act, lots of crowd interaction and humor, and they were credited with creating the lounge act in Las Vegas, probably playing some of the longest gigs ever, ha. She and her Trio were really cool for their time. Still enjoy watching their few videos out there.
She would be pleased w the progression - This instrument sound superb - and the evolution w it's abilities - is why we arw sewing it now - still. It gives her a bit of continued fame - outside of Vegas nightclubs and all she had to deal with.
Beth Bartlett Heard that. Are you related to MK?
Nealix D. Now I want to listen to her! Thanks!
magic
nice voice phil!
hey! first comment.. .and from Perú!!! (love from Perú..) =D
Keep rocking Fretted americana family.... Keep rocking dudes..!! =)
loving the sound effects hahaha the gunshot made my day
"Well it looks like one piece, but they're tricky bastards over there at Fender" :P Too true
Frozen at 301 views!!! Love you guys!!
I'm likin' the Jet-Moto Theme lol. Thumbs up if you remember that gem from the 90's!!!
good sound effects
Must be a great guitar. Phil looked like he enjoyed playing it.
Check out Mary Kaye playing the original strat on youtube search Mary Kaye Trio. Mary died in 2007 so did Bill Carson the other strat cat within days of each other. They had the 1st 2 strats Fender made
you guys inspire me so i wish i could still play lol i read the comment by animalman1122 about a guitar contest and i got really exited well the whole story behind it is some duche' broke into my house while i was gone and stole nothing but my guitar which i was really sad about and still to this day lol but i just cant play all this stuff on acoustic so i was hoping that a guitar contest may be a posibilty sometime in the future because its one thing to have a guitar but one autographedisbetter
@frettedamericana A contest?! That's awesome!!! :) Also: Thank you for another amazing video! I enjoyed every one of them :D
@TulioSounds I know I'm late to this party but I just have to say. The reason they sound the same is the "Pea's" sampled Dick Dales version of Misirlou for "pump it" which as far as I'm concerned is something that happens far to often in music these days. :(
YEAH! PHIL X BABE! :D
This guy is good enough to play lead guitar in Bon Jovi!
I have 57/58' MK too, that's an incredible good guitar . ( I like this guy but this piercing is a shame ,Man !!!! LOL )
@ZiGy14 It does look like it, but its acutally a double neck next to the six string neck of a seperate double neck.
you are a pretty epic dude!
@frettedamericana Great video as always! You really seem to be going to town on the editing these days Dustin! There seems to be about a million different camera angles haha.
Thanks for keeping these videos coming, i really appreciate them with all the time you guys put in to it.
Robert.
WOW, Hell Cat! Awesome. You need to play Sails of Charon!!! I know you know it.
@1952Telecaster WOAH WOAH, the Evil Robot is not a wimpy amp!
Lava Cable Retro Coil cable for the win
try some of that sustained drone at the end through the looper and dazzle us with some exotic modalities over that!
Holy shit, those pickups have some ridiculous punchiness/bite. This right here is what a single-coil guitar SHOULD sound like. Also I LOVE Phil's Bowie impression!! haha.
Is this guitar still for sale? It's awesome! So is Phil X!!!
Phil, you radiate good shiiiiiit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Always pick me up! Cheers!
We want more Little Wing!!!!!!
Thats a nice piece of ash
That is a bright Strat
@:30 just over Phil's right shoulder (which is the left side of the screen for those of us who aren't as good at left right juxtaposition) is a guitar. It appears to be a 2 pickup stratocaster, natural finish, silver tone pickguard, maple neck/fretboard. I have looked for this guitar on fretted americana's site, but have not found it. I would like more info.
@LLCW Interesting one! I believe that's a Custom Shop model. Also note how far from the neck the "neck" pickup is set. I hope Phil demos that one soon.
I agree. He should do a Mustang next.
always 300 views before I get here, you guys are fast like youtube ninjas..
Great Phil, There's something a little cleaner about that Evil Robot though.
Lol at the looper part. He needs a metronome on that one. Damn. I want to play a hardtail strat too.
One piece of ash, that Mary Kaye. Likes a small G string. OK! I'll get my coat now...
@animalman1122 not a guitar but we are planning a contest!!! stay tuned :)
@TopGunJAB See, he's a studio musician. That means he can play anything if he knoes what it sounds like.
What you all don't realise is that the unit known as 'Phil X' is actually a holographic projection. Just so you know. The shadow was post edited in.
That Awesome Strat was begging for Jeff Beck's People Get Ready.
