Beautiful and terrifying at the same time. I love to see the way the horses were decorated just as much as the samurai riding it. Thanks for sharing this.

fabrics are showing wear and tear because they are centuries old, but when they were actually worn in battlefields, they must have been way more vivid/colorful I think.

As explained in the program, the secret of samurai armor is to protect against longbows. Japanese longbows have a long range of 400m and 150m, and are so powerful that their arms and necks fly off when hit at close range. Japanese armor is equipped to protect against this large bow. Chinese and Korean bows are short bows, so their armor is thin. During the war with China and Korea, 50 Chinese shortbows were fired into Japan's armor, leaving almost all of Japan's armor intact. Shoot from a distance that cannot be reached with a short bow, and after annihilating the archery infantry, charge and kill them with a Japanese sword. In Korea, 200,000 Chinese and Korean troops surrounded the 7,000 members of the Shimazu clan who were holed up in a castle. There is a record that the Shimazu clan attacked from the castle and killed 80,000 people before escaping, but the number of Shimazu clan casualties was only two.

Decorations, I suppose. As with almost every armour, the higher your status was, the better you would decorate your gear. The japanese also tried to look terrifying and demon like to their opponents, hence the mask looking like a demon and the ornaments like horns on the helmet.

Yes the upper class samurai did a great job slaughtering mostly comoners who were Christians. Christianity appealed the peasantry as it was a fundamentally anti authority and anti hierarchy whereas the confucian influence in Japan as well as Shinto-Buddhism reinforced a rigid hierarchy among the population.
So you can see why the influence of the Ikko Ikki and Christianity became so widespread among the Japanese until they were forcefully put down by the establishment.

    roll through a landfill site.
I'm one among the small minority who recognises the fact in which the samurai knights look ridiculous. They're so over-embellished to the point in which they're just a visually incoherent mess.
The Mongol knights and the Chinese knights of the Qin dynasty looked so much better.
