    I forgot to say in the video, but comment what you like or dislike about FoE, I'd love to hear your thoughts and criticisms, both because I just find it interesting and maybe it'll help me with my own writing.

      @@wubway that's okay!! Honestly I was busy earlier and just read the title, so I didn't watch this video until now. But I have to say I loved your analysis of FOE and I absolutely agree with you on, well, everything lol. It's not for some people, but it is for people like me (and you, obviously) who love Fallout and MLP. I think it's the meshing of a children's franchise and a horrifying mature franchise that captivates the fans, and disgusts the critics.

    I would say for me it's one part the incredibly stark contrast between the two franchises getting crossed over, one part the amalgam being surprisingly well combined and thought-out and one part "aww look at them try" moe because the moment-to-moment writing is pretty amateurish. To break out the ever popular food analogy, it's like an amatuer cook smashed two wildly different dishes together and it looks kinda weird, but the taste and smell is awesome.
    Honestly, the appeal of "extremely kid friendly franchise" combined with "grimdark shit" alone is enough to get a lot of people in the door. "What if Equestria got blown the f*ck up?" it's just pure genius baby!

    Honestly, I don't think I'd concede those points about filler and violence, at least not for original FO:E (i do think they apply to other spin-offs, especially Project Horizons). Having both read it and listened to it a few times, I actually think the original is pretty tight and well calibrated. Every encounter pushes a character arc or plot point and the violence, while extreme, isn't actually described overly gratuitously, and often actually serves a purpose. I actually think FO: E is kind of a great Fallout story in terms of theme.

    • @wubway
      @wubway  3 місяці тому +2

      It depends on how you define filler, because there is a scale. Some would say anything that doesn't further the main plot is filler, but I think they're dumb because character development and world building are also important. The best writing does all three, but sometimes it's fun to kick back and relax. But towards the start of FoE before Pip's quest against the Enclave, the Goddess, and Redeye all kick off she does some seemingly extraneous questing that I think puts a lot of people off since there isn't a steady forward progression to hook them. Stuff like going to clear Stable 24 with Calamity. That little arc 1) develops Pip by showing her as someone who helps random people even at great risk just like a Fallout protagonist, 2) develops Calamity by showing him as having a code of honor and being someone who will risk his life to help a stranger despite getting nothing out of it, 3) forges the bond between Pip and Calamity, 4) develops the world by showing a Stable-Tec experiment a la Fallout lore with a MLP lore twist to it, and 5) sets up Pip rescuing the slaves from Old Appaloosa because she is in New Appaloosa's good graces, and it also gives that action consequences because after sending the slaves to New Appaloosa they get mad at her. BUT... I know all that with hind sight and insights that come from lots of deep engagement with writing as a craft. Your average reader just read through chapters where Pip got enslaved, went to Ponyville, fought raiders at the library, then went to Ironshod, and now sees her go to some stable on a literal side quest. Yes, that is her intro to the wasteland and character building, and yes she meets watcher and she frees Derpy who both become major characters, and yes she gets her signature weapon. Still, without hindsight that only comes chapters later, this seems like filler that can prevent readers from getting immersed in the story. I attribute it in part to stylistic choice as an emulation of the games, and just because Kkat chose for the story to play out in a slower burning natural progession as opposed to something more flashy and hooking. Nevertheless, making such a decision can put readers off. It's a compromise between authorial vision and appeal. I don't have much of a conclusion so... yeah.

    • @SparrowFae
      @SparrowFae 3 місяці тому +1

      @@wubway Yeah, I think it's tricky. Cause I agree, if you watch a character go off on a side quest, it can definitely seem like filler initially. And then it's kind of a matter of whether or not that side-off is engaging. But the flip side, I think, is that when a lot of people say a story felt "rushed," what they're actually describing is a lack of those little tangents that give the relationships, character arcs, and motivations the time they need to emerge more naturally. I think Stable 24 is a great example, cause Kkat could totally have skipped it and used the same justification for Calamity tagging along (that he felt guilty over shooting LP) to Appleoosa, but because we had that chapter devoted to LP processing that and learning about Calamity's character, it feels a lot more natural when he inserts himself into her quest to find Velvet. And I actually always thought Kkat did a really good job using side tangents like that. But I gotta say I appreciate the video. No one I know has read FOE, and its surprisingly hard to find literary discussions about it.

    Here’s my opinion on FoE
    FoE is amazing, I love it so so much. The characters, the setting, the lore, the morals of the universe, everything. All that said, it’s not a masterpiece. It has its issues, especially the early chapters meandering A LOT. Some stuff is a bit tryhard at times, and my biggest issue is the combat scenes last far too long, and essentially boil down to the same formula every time. I still love it, I’m on my 3rd listen through the official audiobook, and I’ve read it multiple times, and I’m planning to get a hardcover printing soon.
    Also…. Project Horizons>the original FoE

    • @wubway
      @wubway  13 днів тому +1

      @@DJJD669 Amen to PH brother. Although, I gotta say, once Calamity and Steelhooves enter the mix, I enjoy the meandering for the same reasons I like the early Harry Potter books more than The Deathly Hallows. It feels slice of life in a way. Some day I want to write something that really nails that type of storytelling, but I don't think I'm there yet. Equestria in official MLP is such an underutilized fantasy setting, and even in the post apocalypse exploring it is cool.

    • @DJJD669
      @DJJD669 13 днів тому

      @@wubway that’s a fair point. I didn’t mind the meandering later on, but in the early chapters idk, it felt a little harder to follow ig? My memory is pretty faded, it’s been about 4-5 years since my last complete listen, and right now I’m just at the train, right after they find Velvet Remedy, and so far I haven’t minded it as much as I remember. Either way, it’s an amazing story.

    As a dude who wrote a small essay on the russian translation of F:E some ten years ago, I see the appeal as follows:
    -Epic quest based plot, like in High Fantasy genre
    -Sci-fi gadgets, although in the fic it’s more like techno-magic; and speaking of witch...
    -A very interesting adaptation of the MLP universe to the needs of the Fallout story. Gives the story this… elusive charm
    Cons - the “gameplay elements” lifted from Fallout 3. Fuck this nonsense.
    Also prose is bad, but this is to be expected I suppose…
    Pip is a brat, Calamity is a bro, sex scene is cringe, don't fight me - you wont win.

    Some thoughts I have watching these 2 different points of view.
    MLP and Fallout share something I love, it's an open source world. They both have their own world and both their directors left very soon on the entire journey that both series took. And keeping the thing alive became a job for the fans, because if we accepted every cânnon that the Great Owners of the series give us, we would simply be consuming shit.
    I love how the virtues of MLP merge with the wasteland, but i feel that the black / irony / raw humour of Fallout is not put in good use.
    War is made to establish peace, and by peace i mean the idealized world of view the winner has, so, in Fallout, war continue to exist beetween factions and i would like to see the harmonic contribution of MLP here.
    Now, i think, if Romero describe precisly every blow someone suffer in their epics? It would be a donk ideia. So why so much gore and loot? It became a really boring because of it, like a trasciption of a gameplay.
    But i love this shit for the same as u say in the video, is simply impossible not be crazy with FOE when u like Ponies and Fallout.

    I'mma have to disagree with you on Project Horizons. It's not really... good. Now, I will admit that at the start it was fun to read, and even engaging, but as the story went on and on and on and ON---I just had enough of Somber's unnecessary padding of a story that felt more like anime and less like the original Fallout: Equestria. Now it's just my opinion on the matter, but a lot of people share my sentiment in saying that PH WAS good, but became really grating as time went on.
    Other than that, good video! Your points on the contrast between cute and gritty with MLP and Fallout was something that I wanted to comment on Ramble's video but opted not to because I think Ramble perfectly summed uo how his outsider's perspective felf reading FoE. It's nice seeing you so passionate about FoE since there's been a drought of that type of content recently.

    • @wubway
      @wubway  9 місяців тому

      I think it comes down to taste. I like things that go on and on so that's a perk for me. I think PH's scale is what gets people. Somber himself said that Fallout stories are typically small scale, and that Fallout protagonists usually only save their corner of the Wasteland. That small scale keeps things grounded and believable, and that's probably why it hits for people. Little Pip's journey kinda mirrors Fallout 1, 2, and The Pitt, while BJ starts off mimicking New Vegas and ends up going off the rails into a sort of lovecraftian space thing that kinda loses its main rooting in Fallout. So, I totally get it.
      Personally, I like a long, grand adventure, with lots of interesting lore, and I like mysteries, so it's my jam. And, I study writing, not just as a hobby but it's what I'm actually studying in university. I can tell you that, on a technical level, Somber is an expert storyteller. There are 3 basic things a scene needs to do to not be counted as filler: further the plot, worldbuild, or show/develop character. There are so many subplots that maybe some go missed, and some of Somber's writing is really subtle so maybe things are missed there too, but while making the audiobook I have effective scoured every single line while recording and editing, and I can tell you that it's all there. Yes it's long, goofy, and indulgent, but I'm lucky enough to like the same things Somber does and to appreciate the technical skill that went into crafting such a gargantuan story. I plan on doing a series of in-depth breakdown's of PH in the future, so if you stick around I'll have plenty more to say. And, if you have any specific topics, plotlines, etc, you wanna see talked about lemme know.

      @@wubwayI'm glad you can find enjoyment in Project Horizons when I can't, I've tried reading it from start to finish but I just couldn't keep up with all of the descriptions of the scenery, dialogue, the subplots, sidequests, memory orbs, the mind screw chapter where BJ's in a mental institute, and it just felt all over the place to me. Plus Blackjack's whining and angsting was something I just couldn't get through because I was like "Oh, this again" and I just couldn't sympathize with her like I wanted, I get that the Wasteland is a horrid place but BJ's angsting was too much for me. The reason I know of all of that was because I skimmed/read bits and pieces of the story.
      It just at times felt like gibberish rather than move the story forward and didn't feel to go anywhere in certain areas and the moral integrity stuff was deeply complex that it flew over my head.
      I think one of the problems is likely even though I love MLP, I haven't played the Fallout games. I'm not saying it's a bad story, I respect the amount of work that went into it even though it's not my thing.
      I had the pleasure to speak to Somber a few times at PVCF last year about some writing pointers and he definitely is talented and knows how to stick to what he wants to write.

    I don't get why people don't like the Bastard scene in PH. True, it is taboo in our culture. So what? Batting that aside, I think this is so fitting for the situation at hand. Look at Scotch's background, this is where the taboo hits a reverse. She looks up to Blackjack, ideolizes her. What does Blackjack do after a tragic loss? Exatly that. Scotch experiences a much bigger loss. She has no coping mechanism of her own, she didn't get to develop one, so she falls back on what her idol would do.

    • @wubway
      @wubway  8 місяців тому

      Oh it absolutely is in character, and there is nothing wrong with it on a technical level. For me at least, it's just jarring. It introduces a character so late in the story, and one that is just so that scene with Scotch could be included. Bastard, by his name, is kind of a joke character who is just an utter bastard. He would have been cooler earlier in the story, rather than this climactic finale after major, emotional character deaths. To my sensibilities it just doesn't seem fitting, even though it's in character. He could have said no, even if just because he was afraid of BJ's reaction, Scotch wanting it was enough to make the point about her character. Bastard could have been given more complexity than being just a bastard, and that would have probably better fit the tone at that point in the story. Maybe he sticks around for Homelands, and he is part of a segue between the two I don't know about and that will change my perspective. While I like PH's exploration of sexuality and I stand by Somber's choice to include such a scene, I just don't think it fits with that point in the story tonally. That's just my 2 cents.
