I worked on pt10 for 6 years before I upgraded. I think perpetual will work just fine. When you build a workflow it doesn’t matter u til there is groundbreaking technology changes.
I still use Protools 10 and a 003 factory interface- I am upgrading my computer ( to a new /old model) and will keep using PT 10. We've recorded multiple records with this system and I see no benefit in giving AVID money when they won't support my gear that I spent a LOT of money on back in the day.

Had PT 10/11 since 2015 but needed a new version after upgrading to Mac OS 12.6. I finally got PT Studio ‘24 perpetual after subscription expired that came with MBox Studio. Perpetual Vibes are back.
Perpetual always, did the subscription for a bit and didn't want to loose the software for not paying. Switched back to Perpetual. This is a good video.
I got tricked into giving up my perpetual license for subscription. The way it was explained to me was that I wouldn't be able to use ANY of my plug-ins with an updated Pro Tools. I knew that about getting an upgrade, but he said I'd loose them with the next update. My pissedsivity is at its highest. Now I'm stuck paying monthly for something that had been working great. Thinking about getting out of Pro Tools completely.
Have you logged into your Avid / Pro Tools account to see if your perpetual licenses are still sitting there? All of mine (going back to Pro Tools 7 I think) are still there and I’ve subscribed in a couple instances for one off projects without losing those licenses

Thanks for this video, it’s been a couple years since i last used my 2013 imac with pt12, want to get back into creating, going with what im comfortable with and that’s an older version of PT, just ordered a refurbished mbp with high sierra, pretty much fully loaded spec wise, hoping it works better and faster than my old imac and…. works with my home studio gear, uad apollo twin thunderbolt 2, pt12, maschine mkII etc, 😅
PT10 & still happy, just stock plugs but lots & lots of hardware :) A DAW for me is just a tape machine with tones of tracks, low noise & little maintenance.
In a setup like that, it’s hard to imagine needing anything beyond PT10! The speedy digital processing tricks of later versions won’t help an analog workflow much at all I guess haha
Hello; I purchased Pro Tools around 2012, & am somewhat of a casual user. I got the perpetual license with a year support 12-31-18, but am having some issues with my Alienware computer. If it get's scrubbed at the repair shop, will I be able to reload my perpetual license, without too much issue? I have the registration card with the code. Again, I use it sparingly, but hope to get more involved with it someday.
I haven’t paid for protools since pt 10 which because I was in school gave me free updates for 4 years so I’m at 12.7 but the studio I go to has the subscription for Ultimate

Good question! You'll retain whatever Pro Tools version you updated to as long they were gained via your Pro Tools Perpetual Licenses support plan and not via the subscription model (which would only temporarily grant you access to a newer version of Pro Tools. For example, I currently am using Pro Tools 2023. If I subscribed today, I could download and use Pro Tools 2024, but would not have access to it once my subscription ended - since I only have perpetual access to PT 2023. However, if my active support plan from my perpetual license got me Pro Tools 2024, I would be in luck and have perpetual access to it. Hope that helps!

Ah, yes I think I understand! I don't believe you can "pre purchase" a Pro Tools Perpetual Upgrade unfortunately. I'm hopeful that this pricing model is here to stay, but I do understand how one might not be so confident haha. As for Pro Tools 10, you should have no problem running a legacy version of Pro Tools with a more current Pro Tools license! Hope this helps!
I feel that I should add, regarding the Pro Tools license being backwards compatible with older versions of Pro Tools, that this is my experience anyways. I can't actually find documentation saying that you can use older versions, but I've done it frequently when working in other studios and bringing my own ilok with me. Cheers!

Very imformative vid, thank you. I still use PT 12.5, know it's bugs, to be honest I had no time to check if I missed something interesting in new versions. Also subscriptions make me mad. If perpetual is back, should I consider buying new PT? Is there something really important for better workflow, not just bells and whistles? I had vast collection of high quality plugins, so new stock plugins inside PT aren't gamechanger for me.
Personally I think Pro Tools 12 was a great version! The big change is implementation of some ARA tech and of course the M1 Apple silicon optimization, which is worth considering if you have a Silicon version Mac computer - but that also comes with some plugin update pains! Overall, if you’re happy - I’d just keep on being happy!
I messed up a bit on this... I initially owned a perpetual licence, and I owned that version of protools for 5 and a half years. At the time I wasn't aware I could pay to upgrade pro tools so I decided to buy a subscription. I didn't realise that purchasing a subscription meant I had to relinquish my perpetual licence, shortly after peotools stopped selling the perpetual licence and went completely subscription based. Also, my protools subscription went from $10 to $29.99 a month, almost like they put me on ultimate. All this to say I miss owning a perpetual licence, and once this subscription ends, I think I'll buy my licence once more.
I’d encourage you to sign in to your avid account and double check that you don’t still have your perpetual license (for that now older version of Pro Tools)! Subscribing typically shouldn’t cause you to forfeit your perpetual pro tools license and your old license should still be sitting there. If it’s recent enough, you may be able to upgrade it to a more recent perpetual version of PT at the discount upgrade price! It just requires a perpetual license of Pro Tools 9 or later. I’ve separated ilok accounts for my home and commercial studios and used upgrade, crossgrade, and amnesties to move up from over the last 15 years for home… but have been hanging on to this 10 + 11 bundle license for legacy sessions and album masters that can come in extremely handy and didn’t want to part with that. The upgrade option got lost a bit in the sub v perp discussion once reintroduced but is a viable option for some at its reduced pricing. I’m going with a sub for home and will continue perpetual in commercial. Your quick breakdown is fantastic!
I have a question, I’m a novy in the world of production so my question is I want to have protools on my main computer my IMac that I want to set up in my studio but also I want to have protools on MacBook when I’m traveling I can still work on my projects so do I have to get 2 different licenses for each protools because is a lot of money either version or I can use 1 licenses for both computer as I never use them at the same time, so I don’t know if is a silly question but is a lot of money to get 2 licenses.
Hey there! Great question! You only need one Pro Tools license! I work at different studios regularly and just bring my iLok along with me, and it’s no problem! I keep my pro tools sessions on an external hard drive and that travels with me too! The only thing to keep in mind is the version of Pro Tools - if you had an old version license of pro tools, (let’s say pro tools 12) and then had Pro Tools 2023 installed on a M3 Mac Studio, your Pro Tools 12 license wouldn’t be able to run the newer version of Pro Tools. But easy solution: just install the version of Pro Tools that you own on that device and you’re good to go! (Only time that wouldn’t work is if the version of pro tools is too old to work with that computer) Hope this helps!
I would love perpetual but they dont give you the click plugin. Which is much need when you need to find out if your beat is on tempo. So with the perpetual licensing you cant keep tempo because if doesnt have a click plugin. I really crying out for help, LOL. Do anyone know if theres a click plugin that I can download for protools?
As of right now, it seems that Pro Tools offers to perks for paying annually for a subscription over monthly: you get a discount on the annual plan (17% discount on Pro Tools Studio and 33% discount on Pro Tools Ultimate) and you also get the "Pro Tools Inner Circle Rewards" which is essentially a bunch of free plugins and some education resources that are included with the subscription. So Avid/Pro Tools is definitely incentivizing the annual subscription option!

You'll have to carefully review these offerings to ensure they are the version you are intending to compare. Always suggest reaching out to the support of these websites as their ability to provide good customer service is a good indicator to if you should buy from them! If they don't seem to understand your Pro Tools related questions, I'd move on to another provider to get your perpetual license! 2 - I think you misunderstood me on this, but I made this video a long time ago,. so I'm not sure which part of the video you're referring to exactly. I think what I meant is that at about 4 years of owning the perpetual license, you have broken even on your price vs if you had subscriped to Pro Tools for that same period of time. So at 4 years, owning a perpetual license of Pro Tools becomes cheaper, since you aren't paying beyond that 4 years. But up until 4 years, it's cheaper to be subscribed to Pro Tools. 3 - If you're a professional user, Pro Tools Studio is a great option. That is what I use and it's perfect for me. Pro Tools Artist would be too limiting to me personally, but for most musicians, it would likely be perfect. So if you're a musician first, Pro Tools Artist. If you're a Music Producer, studio owner, mix engineer, etc - Pro Tools Studio. If you're doing post work for television and extremely massive sessions, Pro Tools Ultimate. 4 - Good question, and I'm not sure how they are handling cross grades right now. To get up to date info on this, and all Pro Tools questions, shooting AVID's/Pro Tools sales support an email is definitely recommended. Hard to find a lot of information on this, but I "think" the 003 will work with Pro Tools 11 - but please try reaching out to Avid / Pro Tools sales support to see if they can verify for you! Another consideration, is if your computer and the 003 are compatible too, so be sure to test that too!
Even with all the update perks subscription gets, I just don't get the appeal of not being able to access my life's work just because I didn't want to pay monthly for the rest of my life.
Check out Pro Tools First! It’s free and gives you the feel for it. It’s a bit limited though, I wish Pro Tools offered a full functioning trial of Studio or Artist for folks like yourself!
Absolutely! Most mixers tend to prefer to be send exported and consolidated WAV files, rather than the entire pro tools session (which means your mixer can work in any DAW, not just Pro Tools!) Chat with the mixer you're hiring and they will advise you on how they need the audio files prepared and delivered for them to mix it for ya!

The studio I originally interned at way back only just recently moved from their old TDM Pro Tools 10 rig - it was rock solid! But a lot of new hardware and software needs forced them to upgrade so they had to give up the old rig! Was an expensive change for them, but their new control is looking pretty slick i must say, and they are making good use of all the processing power from a newer computer too!
im really confused. the perpetual licenses run for about the same as the subscription costs for one year. I get that there's additional benefits but what is really the point of spending what is essentially one perpetual license per year for a service you can get forever for the price of one year along with just buying the plugins. it 100% saves money in the long run to go perpetual. maybe I'm missing something but I see no point of getting the subscription other than having more money than you know what to do with.
I think you may be confusing the Pro Tools "perpetual upgrade" price with a brand new Pro Tools perpetual price (which is about 3x the cost). I just changed my Mac . I had Pro tools perpetual plan version 12.8 on my macbook . Now I want to have my protools on my new Mac Studio but is not compatible with this version of OS . What can I do to have it run without having to pay a new pro tools ?? Please help me ! Thankssss
Unfortunately I think Pro Tools 12.8 is just too old to be able to run on a m1 or newer silicon Mac - so you will have to update to a more recent version of Pro Tools to be able to use it on a modern Mac Studio! Your options, as far as I can find with my research, are either purchase a perpetual upgrade plan or grab a subscription. Both will get you current to the latest version of Pro Tools. Sorry I don’t have better news, but at least there are some good new features in store for you if you do update!
I personally also like the Pro Tools Perpetual option (mostly due to hating thinking about subscription charges) but after doing the math on the break even point of a pro tools subscription to perpetual, I’m a little less sure now! I tend to upgrade more often then every 4 years! In either case, I’m glad Avid and Tools have decided to let the users decide what’s best for themselves!
Unfortunately perpetual only means that you own that pro tools license forever - not that avid (or your computers operating system for that matter) will offer support for it. So regardless to if you own a license, the tools we use to run that version of Pro Tools can still outgrow our license. Many larger studios still run older Mac Pro Towers for this reason - if they update their computers they’d have to update their Pro Tools licenses (and potentially their recording interfaces), and if they update their Pro Tools license, they’d have to update their computers. Not an inexpensive step for anyone to make!
Huge fan of the perpetual license. With the exception of all the bugs in the newer Pro Tools software that are workflow killers. Then Pro Tools want to charge you for an update to fix something that should have already been working correctly in the first place. That's walking an unethical line in my opinion.
I'm actually personally not opposed to some paid updates (after a reasonable amount of time passing). I understand that continued development costs audio tech companies like Avid huge amounts of money, and ultimately I do want them to continue to exist, offer improved technology, and potentially even create future technologies! But I do think the one year time frame that Avid offers with Pro Tools is too short, and that the upgrade price is on the higher side. The features being added each year don't really justify it enough for me, personally.
Absolutely! Especially with the endless amount of bugs in the PT software. I'm not opposed to paying for new features, but customers should not have to pay for bug fixes.

What most don't understand is that Avid main customers are not hobbyist making music in their spare bedroom. Professional studios all use Pro Tools because for recording commercial music or Film/Video Post - Production there's no other DAW that can handle sessions with hundreds of tracks. So the price is minimal for these studios that have a budget of thousands of dollars for each project they are working with. There's a reason why Avid have that market for more than 20 years.
in other words pro tools is a rip off, tryna trap music producers for life, purchase perpetual license and still they forcing you to pay for a update if your new pc need it for pro tools to work right, i don't think we need anymore new plugins from avid for them to keep charging people for update all because they choose to make some need plugin, they have so many version of pro tools that its confusing
Wow, these comments are so depressing--they confirm my experience that PT 10 on an old Mac is still superior, it's what i use--and that planned/forced obsolescence is 100% pure evil and deserves to be punished cruelly.
PT10 was really stable and great for tracking but as a mix engineer I'd definitely never go back. Track freeze /committing, and apple silicon support have made it incredibly fast and powerful!

I own artist perpetual, but sometimes when i have big mixing projects, i do monthly studio or ultimate for the time i need it

It was from a two year old video from some guy I checked out that the possibility could be there that you could buy two licenses and then activate that one in the future . Maybe he really didn’t know either . But what’s stopping you from buying goods? Also, I didn’t know that they offered perpetual licenses a couple years ago and took them away again. Very imformative vid, thank you. I still use PT 12.5, know it's bugs, to be honest I had no time to check if I missed something interesting in new versions. Also subscriptions make me mad. If perpetual is back, should I consider buying new PT? Is there something really important for better workflow, not just bells and whistles? I had vast collection of high quality plugins, so new stock plugins inside PT aren't gamechanger for me.
Personally I think Pro Tools 12 was a great version! The big change is implementation of some ARA tech and of course the M1 Apple silicon optimization, which is worth considering if you have a Silicon version Mac computer - but that also comes with some plugin update pains! Overall, if you’re happy - I’d just keep on being happy!

I initially owned a perpetual licence, and I owned that version of protools for 5 and a half years.
At the time I wasn't aware I could pay to upgrade pro tools so I decided to buy a subscription.
I didn't realise that purchasing a subscription meant I had to relinquish my perpetual licence, shortly after peotools stopped selling the perpetual licence and went completely subscription based.
Also, my protools subscription went from $10 to $29.99 a month, almost like they put me on ultimate.
All this to say I miss owning a perpetual licence, and once this subscription ends, I think I'll buy my licence once more.
I’d encourage you to sign in to your avid account and double check that you don’t still have your perpetual license (for that now older version of Pro Tools)! Subscribing typically shouldn’t cause you to forfeit your perpetual pro tools license and your old license should still be sitting there. If it’s recent enough, you may be able to upgrade it to a more recent perpetual version of PT at the discount upgrade price! It just requires a perpetual license of Pro Tools 9 or later.

I’ve separated ilok accounts for my home and commercial studios and used upgrade, crossgrade, and amnesties to move up from over the last 15 years for home… but have been hanging on to this 10 + 11 bundle license for legacy sessions and album masters that can come in extremely handy and didn’t want to part with that.
The upgrade option got lost a bit in the sub v perp discussion once reintroduced but is a viable option for some at its reduced pricing.
I’m going with a sub for home and will continue perpetual in commercial. Your quick breakdown is fantastic!
I’m getting the License
I have a question, I’m a novy in the world of production so my question is I want to have protools on my main computer my IMac that I want to set up in my studio but also I want to have protools on MacBook when I’m traveling I can still work on my projects so do I have to get 2 different licenses for each protools because is a lot of money either version or I can use 1 licenses for both computer as I never use them at the same time, so I don’t know if is a silly question but is a lot of money to get 2 licenses.
Hey there! Great question! You only need one Pro Tools license! I work at different studios regularly and just bring my iLok along with me, and it’s no problem! I keep my pro tools sessions on an external hard drive and that travels with me too!
The only thing to keep in mind is the version of Pro Tools - if you had an old version license of pro tools, (let’s say pro tools 12) and then had Pro Tools 2023 installed on a M3 Mac Studio, your Pro Tools 12 license wouldn’t be able to run the newer version of Pro Tools.
But easy solution: just install the version of Pro Tools that you own on that device and you’re good to go! (Only time that wouldn’t work is if the version of pro tools is too old to work with that computer)

I would love perpetual but they dont give you the click plugin. Which is much need when you need to find out if your beat is on tempo. So with the perpetual licensing you cant keep tempo because if doesnt have a click plugin. I really crying out for help, LOL. Do anyone know if theres a click plugin that I can download for protools?

Quick question... In terms of subscriptions, you see the annual option same thing as monthly one...?
As of right now, it seems that Pro Tools offers to perks for paying annually for a subscription over monthly: you get a discount on the annual plan (17% discount on Pro Tools Studio and 33% discount on Pro Tools Ultimate) and you also get the "Pro Tools Inner Circle Rewards" which is essentially a bunch of free plugins and some education resources that are included with the subscription.
So Avid/Pro Tools is definitely incentivizing the annual subscription option!

1. There are perpetual license available in different sites and there is a change in price. Some sites the price is little bit lower and some others the price is little bit higher so what is the difference? what will be the reason? is there any difference or changes in the software and its updates?
2. The point you have mentioned like after buying the perpetual license, we can upgrade it after 4 years but I didn't see it in PT web so could you please clarify this.
3. Which version would be better to buy, I know that the higher versions always better but still since you are a PT user for long time, which version you would recommend to buy like artist or studio?

1 - I can't really answer this one. You'll have to carefully review these offerings to ensure they are the version you are intending to compare. Always suggest reaching out to the support of these websites as their ability to provide good customer service is a good indicator to if you should buy from them! If they don't seem to understand your Pro Tools related questions, I'd move on to another provider to get your perpetual license!
2 - I think you misunderstood me on this, but I made this video a long time ago,. so I'm not sure which part of the video you're referring to exactly. I think what I meant is that at about 4 years of owning the perpetual license, you have broken even on your price vs if you had subscriped to Pro Tools for that same period of time. So at 4 years, owning a perpetual license of Pro Tools becomes cheaper, since you aren't paying beyond that 4 years. But up until 4 years, it's cheaper to be subscribed to Pro Tools.
3 - If you're a professional user, Pro Tools Studio is a great option. That is what I use and it's perfect for me. Pro Tools Artist would be too limiting to me personally, but for most musicians, it would likely be perfect. So if you're a musician first, Pro Tools Artist. If you're a Music Producer, studio owner, mix engineer, etc - Pro Tools Studio. If you're doing post work for television and extremely massive sessions, Pro Tools Ultimate.
4 - Good question, and I'm not sure how they are handling cross grades right now. To get up to date info on this, and all Pro Tools questions, shooting AVID's/Pro Tools sales support an email is definitely recommended. I can't seem to find any cross grade information from Pro Tools right now, which is disappointing!

Hard to find a lot of information on this, but I "think" the 003 will work with Pro Tools 11 - but please try reaching out to Avid / Pro Tools sales support to see if they can verify for you! Another consideration, is if your computer and the 003 are compatible too, so be sure to test that too!

Check out Pro Tools First! It’s free and gives you the feel for it. It’s a bit limited though, I wish Pro Tools offered a full functioning trial of Studio or Artist for folks like yourself!

Absolutely! Most mixers tend to prefer to be send exported and consolidated WAV files, rather than the entire pro tools session (which means your mixer can work in any DAW, not just Pro Tools!)
Chat with the mixer you're hiring and they will advise you on how they need the audio files prepared and delivered for them to mix it for ya!

The studio I originally interned at way back only just recently moved from their old TDM Pro Tools 10 rig - it was rock solid!
But a lot of new hardware and software needs forced them to upgrade so they had to give up the old rig!
Was an expensive change for them, but their new control is looking pretty slick i must say, and they are making good use of all the processing power from a newer computer too!

im really confused. the perpetual licenses run for about the same as the subscription costs for one year. I get that there's additional benefits but what is really the point of spending what is essentially one perpetual license per year for a service you can get forever for the price of one year along with just buying the plugins. it 100% saves money in the long run to go perpetual. maybe I'm missing something but I see no point of getting the subscription other than having more money than you know what to do with.
I think you may be confusing the Pro Tools "perpetual upgrade" price with a brand new Pro Tools perpetual price (which is about 3x the cost). I just changed my Mac . I had Pro tools perpetual plan version 12.8 on my macbook . Now I want to have my protools on my new Mac Studio but is not compatible with this version of OS . What can I do to have it run without having to pay a new pro tools ?? Please help me ! Thankssss
Unfortunately I think Pro Tools 12.8 is just too old to be able to run on a m1 or newer silicon Mac - so you will have to update to a more recent version of Pro Tools to be able to use it on a modern Mac Studio!
Your options, as far as I can find with my research, are either purchase a perpetual upgrade plan or grab a subscription. Both will get you current to the latest version of Pro Tools.
Sorry I don’t have better news, but at least there are some good new features in store for you if you do update!

I personally also like the Pro Tools Perpetual option (mostly due to hating thinking about subscription charges) but after doing the math on the break even point of a pro tools subscription to perpetual, I’m a little less sure now! I tend to upgrade more often then every 4 years!
In either case, I’m glad Avid and Tools have decided to let the users decide what’s best for themselves!

Avid will not support my version of pro tools. So perpetual license, does not mean forever. It doesn’t even mean 10 years
Unfortunately perpetual only means that you own that pro tools license forever - not that avid (or your computers operating system for that matter) will offer support for it. So regardless to if you own a license, the tools we use to run that version of Pro Tools can still outgrow our license.
Many larger studios still run older Mac Pro Towers for this reason - if they update their computers they’d have to update their Pro Tools licenses (and potentially their recording interfaces), and if they update their Pro Tools license, they’d have to update their computers. Not an inexpensive step for anyone to make!

Huge fan of the perpetual license. With the exception of all the bugs in the newer Pro Tools software that are workflow killers. Then Pro Tools want to charge you for an update to fix something that should have already been working correctly in the first place. That's walking an unethical line in my opinion.

I'm actually personally not opposed to some paid updates (after a reasonable amount of time passing). I understand that continued development costs audio tech companies like Avid huge amounts of money, and ultimately I do want them to continue to exist, offer improved technology, and potentially even create future technologies! But I do think the one year time frame that Avid offers with Pro Tools is too short, and that the upgrade price is on the higher side. The features being added each year don't really justify it enough for me, personally.

Absolutely! Especially with the endless amount of bugs in the PT software. I'm not opposed to paying for new features, but customers should not have to pay for bug fixes.

This is a fantastic point that I hadn’t considered!
What most don't understand is that Avid main customers are not hobbyist making music in their spare bedroom.
Professional studios all use Pro Tools because for recording commercial music or Film/Video Post - Production there's no other DAW that can handle sessions with hundreds of tracks.
So the price is minimal for these studios that have a budget of thousands of dollars for each project they are working with.
There's a reason why Avid have that market for more than 20 years.
I can run 400 tracks with 48 samples and on each track 4 VST plugins all realtime without any issues in CuBase 14. Long are gone days of Avid only

Wow, these comments are so depressing--they confirm my experience that PT 10 on an old Mac is still superior, it's what i use--and that planned/forced obsolescence is 100% pure evil and deserves to be punished cruelly.

PT10 was really stable and great for tracking but as a mix engineer I'd definitely never go back. Track freeze /committing, and apple silicon support have made it incredibly fast and powerful!
