stupid question, why don't you want normalised tracks?
I understand that every time you listen with your headphones you need as well to change the preset? I usually swap between headphones and speakers when mixing. I guess that also can be a bit dangerous if you forget changing presets
Great point! Yes, I do manually select different presets for headphones - but that’s actually just due to laziness on my side. I could set a different routing path to my headphone outputs with the different sonarworks reference correction on that and have it in at all times - it would just mean setting up the additional output inside of my interfaces outputs (I use an UA Apollo Twin and it’s currently set to just mirror the main outs to the headphones, but I could change that for this routing scenario essentially)
What most don't understand is that Avid main customers are not hobbyist making music in their spare bedroom. Professional studios all use Pro Tools because for recording commercial music or Film/Video Post - Production there's no other DAW that can handle sessions with hundreds of tracks. So the price is minimal for these studios that have a budget of thousands of dollars for each project they are working with. There's a reason why Avid have that market for more than 20 years.
Very imformative vid, thank you. I still use PT 12.5, know it's bugs, to be honest I had no time to check if I missed something interesting in new versions. Also subscriptions make me mad. If perpetual is back, should I consider buying new PT? Is there something really important for better workflow, not just bells and whistles? I had vast collection of high quality plugins, so new stock plugins inside PT aren't gamechanger for me.
Personally I think Pro Tools 12 was a great version! The big change is implementation of some ARA tech and of course the M1 Apple silicon optimization, which is worth considering if you have a Silicon version Mac computer - but that also comes with some plugin update pains! Overall, if you’re happy - I’d just keep on being happy!
??
give people the choice
Couldn’t agree more!
Hello Malcom thanks so much for this Ive groveled with this since I started, Ill sniff aroung your channel for other gems
Muito Obrigado! foi uma ajuda muito importante pra mim aqui no Brasil, no Logic Pro todos estavam acessando, no Pro Tools já estava pra desistir e você com esse tutorial maravilhoso! parabéns
What if u run an Amp sim and pedals before the DI? Still follow this rule for pickups?
Anyone could get the same results using OTT, so what's god about it?
What is the tool you use to create audio key spikes? Sorry i didn't see a video linked.
Apologies for that, I’ll look into linking that video and tool when I’m back home into UA-cam mode! But I use a tool called Massey DRT for that! Lovely tool! Takes some practice but works really well. Lately I honestly hire an assistant recording engineer to do the key spike creation process for me though, so I can jump straight into mixing.
2:45 of becoming best friends, then suggest rosetta. Perma-banned from my life.
great video - lots of useful info and lots to think about 🙂
Nice!! Thanks for making this video!
Can you use a perpetual license on older version of pro twos like 2023.6.9 if you just purchasing the license or upgrading your license as of today
What was your typical mixbus plugin chain before trying the God Particle?
It varies but usually ProQ into a 2bus comp like Townhouse comp, inflator and a limiter are pretty much mainstays. I add and subtract things all the time though, but that compressor is there very very early in the process
@@malcomowenflood Ian McElroy introduced me to the Newfangled Audio plugins. Elevate ends up on my mixbus consistently now.
I’ve got the Newfangled plugin bundle as well! They make great stuff!
Using PT 9 with a Digidesign 003 ...
Amazing. Winning the game haha
Super quick note... First, great vid. Thanks, Malcolm! Second, I've just gotten SoundID Reference and I'm trying to sort out the best workflow for my circumstances. Specifically, using SoundID systemwide so that I'm learning my listening environment as well as dealing with the bugginess of moving from the Windows environment to the DAW environment. Which leads me to point number three, Audio Hijack looked like a great opportunity to deal with that bugginess (as well as EG my headphones outside of SoundID). HOWEVER, it is a Mac-only app...it's not an option for PC users.
Hey Jeff, thanks for the comment! Worth asking, are you having issues with SoundID Reference? This video was made on the older Sonarworks model and I’ve heard that SoundID is pretty much issue free! Second, which DAW are you using? Some DAWs also have solutions built in that may be possible!
@@malcomowenflood DAWs will typically bypass the system-wide correction and access the Outs directly, the plugin is as far as I know neccessary. Unless something changed in the meantime, which I doubt as these seem to be technically unsolvable issues.
@@duncan.o-vic I can see what you might think that, but its actually very possible in almost any DAW, and even built in as a standard feature in some! For example, Cubase has a "control room" feature, that allows you to place any plugin you'd like into a monitoring only chain, so any printing of audio files is done prior to this "control room" signal. And even other DAWs that haven't gotten around to a Control Room like feature (ahem, Pro Tools), you can get around it by setting up an additional bus before sending to your mains, and bounce or print off the aux earlier, with your monitoring correction on the proceeding bus. I find the Audio Hijack route neater and more reliable though! But if Pro Tools had Control Room, I'd use that for sure!
@@malcomowenflood I'm not talking about the monitor bus, it's a standard feature in most DAWs, printing isn't an issue. I'm saying that for monitoring you still need to use the plugin, meaning you can't control everything with the standalone/system-wide instance, at least not on Windows. You can use alternative drivers, I think some are supplied by Sonarworks, but they're inferior and would defy the purpose of the audio interface.
@@malcomowenflood I've been having a couple of issues getting my SoundID Reference app to play nice with my DAW (in terms of output device) and the technical guidance for Sonarworks isn't as 'user friendly' as I'd like. However, I think I've solved that with a bit of trial and error (and an uninstall; start again approach). So pretty happy with the speaker/room calibration. The big reason your video caught my eye is I'm looking to EQ my headphones differently than SoundID does and wasn't getting what I needed out of the custom curve offering in SoundID. I was excited by the possibility of having a single application that contained both room correction and headphone correction (via a VST EQ plugin) for the easy of selecting one of the other depending on whether I was on monitor speakers or one of my three sets of headphones. Although I have a MacBook Pro M1 as my laptop, I primarily mix and master on my PC desktop. As a result, Audio Hijack isn't an option...I just thought I'd let others know that limitation because I didn't hear you mention it in the vid. Thanks, mate!
I may have missed this in the video - Canadian or US $?
what do you mean break even point, I don't get money from music
I mean that’s the point that the price of a perpetual and a subscription license balance with each other.
I love mixing into it. It's on the mix bus right from the composing stage.
I shoulda thought of that. Got my mastering back. U rawk.
Helped Big time 😁 Thank You 🤘🏾
Maybe don't use Pro Tools.
I don’t have the open using Rosetta option
Which version of Pro Tools are you using, and are you running an Apple Silicon Mac? (M1 or newer, not an intel based Mac)
*TesslaSE MKII* (free) + Newfangled Audio *SATURATE* + *ELEVATE* = sheer bliss.
My experience too. "Shit. Now I guess I'll have to buy it!" It was the same when I demo'd Melodyne. Luckily that was close to Black Friday ;-)
I had perpetual & would update some over time. I had 12.6 until It stopped & locked up my work. After looking into it, Avid said I had to get Subscription. Although feeling helpless & Ripped off, I got the subscription ($300/yr). I needed help... called in... ONLY A MESSAGE saying you don't have a subscription. I wanted to talk to someone to resolve it. There was no one to help me resolve it. It happened a number of times. I'm no long even trying to get it resolved. I'm moving to a more reliable DAW. I was VERY Familiar with PT12 & did not want to leave, but if you have issues (Mostly with iLok), there is NOBODY to talk to to figure out what happened. AVID Customer service SUCKS so bad my ears are popping. Adios.
It takes SO much CPU its crazy
I honestly haven’t noticed this to be the case, but my computers specs are pretty overkill for music production and mixing haha
Thank you
This was great! Thanks!
My plugins still are missing even after Rosetta but they work in ableton fine pls hlp
Your issue is likely your downloaded/installed plugin formats. Pro Tools and Ableton use different plugin formats (for Pro Tools it is called an AAX plugin format) - so you will need to ensure you install the AAX versions when you download or install any plugins, which you likely wouldn't have done when installing them for Ableton. Pro Tools made the switch to AAX plugins in 2011 for Pro Tools 11! Hope this helps you!
Some interesting points here. I've had extensive use of the external (system) with Studio One and internal with Ableton I found that the external software caused latency issues when I started adding hardware (it struggled with delay compensation). Will check this out, thanks!
Ah that is interesting! I haven't experimented with that at this point, please keep me posted!
Avid Heat reduced the Kick drum, made the mix narrow. Not good.
I don’t see rosetta
Are you running Pro Tools and an M1 (or newer) Mac computer? This only applies to Apple Silicon Mac computers, so if you have an older intel Mac, there would be no rosetta option available or needed for Pro Tools and your plugins!
Is there a reason melodyne is missing from audio suite now?
Thanks!
Wow, my first “super thanks”! Very kind of you! I hope the video helped! Thanks so much for supporting me!
I know folks still using PT8
Still a biylt muddy, but seems to me your initial mix just lacked some air, some punch and some width basically. Other plugins could've achieved this too I'm sure.
It’s crazy to know that by a perpetual license you do not get heat. I wish there was a way to buy heat so it can always be yours.
Candidate for AP deconstruction?
I tried it, but it doesn't sound that good on it's own if you want to meet loudness standarts and adding over it sounds overprocessed, it's nice but not nice enough. We're not there yet, no plugin does everything perfect
If you have Fab Saturn 1 or 2, there's a preset that does the same thing what God Particle does. In Saturn 2, go into the "color" sub menu in the presets and throw on the one called Magic bM. I forget what it's called in Saturn 1 but it's something very similar.
I love Fabfilter Saturn 2! I’ll try this out, thanks!
I might be totally stupid, but I didn't hear anything exciting, just more subbass and a wider stereo field. Both of which you can achieve with other plugins just as well and without much tweaking.
I def heard more punch and excitement.
Next try it on the end of your vocal bus ass well it makes crazy clarity, also it will lower your bass the higher u turn it up so use your ears to find the perfect knob setting, and as always ignore the limiter function
you should do a complete mixing video, those vocals sound so good!!!!!
I demoed for a week after watching your video Malcom and it just didn’t seem to make things better for type of music I work on, mostly folk / country and little bit of rock. So I’m giving it’s just not for me. Great video breakdown though !!
Exactly!
Can someone help me? I use Windows Hp. I know how to delete audio files in pro tools session. But I want to delete the whole session so I don't see it in my folders at all. And I don't want to see it when I open up pro tools. When I click on a folder it doesn't give me the option to delete it or even put it in the recycle bin. I really need the space most of them are copies anyway
Malcolm did you record the guitars or are you just doing the mix? If you did recording could you explain or do a video on your guitar recording gear and process?
On the first song (Villain) I didn’t record the guitars. But on the second song (Explosion) I did record them - and the process was essentially the same for both! Would be happy to break it down, but the short version is that both are recorded DI tracks, double tracked, hard panned left and right, and reamped with amp sim plugins! More goes into the mixing than that but that’s the basic take. I’ll definitely try and do a guitar focused video in the future though! Thanks for asking eh!
