Automation is an essential tool in any recording DAW and is essential to a well balanced and dynamic mix or production - but it has some drawbacks... Once you write some automation in Pro Tools you can no longer use your faders - because they are set to FOLLOW the automation you just wrote! Which, of course, makes sense - but is very frustrating if you like mixing with faders and want to make a...

    I wonder if it's possible to automate the trim, so we can add automation on top of the previous writen automation wthout lossing it?

    • @malcomowenflood
      @malcomowenflood 2 години тому

      Yes, you absolutely can automate the trim layer in Pro Tools! The underlying automation will still be retained but also follow the trim automation as well. Example being if you have a really detailed vocal automation in a chorus but wanted it overall to be 2 db louder, you could automate the chorus chunk of the DAW's timeline to be 2db louder with the Trim Automation, and all that detailed automation under it would still continue as well. Short answer, it will work exactly how you hoped haha

    There are also studio monitors, like some from Adam Audio, that accept the upload of a profile (a frequency response map made using SoundID Reference Measure and a reference mic) directly to the speakers. Once the profile is loaded to the monitors there is no need for the plugin, SoundID, or the old reference 4 when using monitors.

    Interesting that I stumbled on to this video. I cant say to much but I work freelance. It's not a company I work for, its an individual entrepreneur who makes his money from various music projects. The role is basically a bit of everything from sound design, song creation, mixing and engineering. Its highly intensive creative work. I get paid just a little bit above minimum wage and its nowhere like enough for the effort I put in so every month I struggle to pay bills etc which adds to the stress. I'm creatively drained, stressed, and the creative battery is running on fumes and I get no joy from the music I create whatsoever and dread starting every day. But I need to work, don't have any other options or skills aside from music. My health has definitely suffered. Your video has given me some food for thought.

    • @malcomowenflood
      @malcomowenflood 19 днів тому

      One of the biggest advantages of working freelance, in my opinion, is that we get to decide our own wage. It’s not that simple of course, but itd a good way to try and look at it. If you’re not getting what you require, I’d encourage you to try and charge enough so that you do. Your client needs you as much as you need them, probably more so!

    For anyone out there still discovering which DAW is gonna be theirs for the long haul, as well as wanting to check out SoundID Reference, Cubase allows you to monitor SoundID through a seperate channel called "Control Room" which is essentially a virtual, built in well.. control room. Imagine that What's great about it, however is allows you to monitor your mix through SoundID Reference on the side, essentially in parallel to your full mix, but with no connection to your actual mix levels. Control room monitors ONLY how you hear it in the room you are in. If you forget to turn off sonarworks before you export, it is 100% fine because you literally don't have to! It comes AFTER your stereo out so if your mix sounds balanced through SoundID, loudness levels look good, because the end goal of SoundID is to make youor room sound as "flat" as possible, you can confidently assume that your mixes should translate pretty well on other devices, especially given the translation options that are built in. No chance of ruining an entire mix with it at the end of your mixbus chain haha (don't ask if i know from experience) Fun fact, Control Room also is where you control built in talk back, cue mixes for artists, multiple sets of actual speakers if you have them, loudness meters, and some insanely good international and platform specific loudness meters/phasescopes/wavescopes/VU's all built in STOCK and completely customizable in the SuperVision plugin. It's EXTREMELY powerful and extremely sick. Anyways, awesome video! It's not a perfect plugin, but it certainly helps! (I usually only set it to about 40-50% and trust my ears for the rest)

BUT - I was still able to find it, so I thought I'd share how with you and hope that it helps. However, it is possible that what works for me won't work for you due to different country versions of their website, or the difference in Pro Tools versions between us. I logged in to my Avid account, went to my products and found my Pro Tools perpetual license. I then clicked "See My Renewal Options", which brought up 3 options for me, but the one we want is "License Upgrade". Hopefully this works for ya! Cheers, Malcom

      Great question, and I think I’ll make a quick video on this! But want you want to do is automate the volume of your master fader (or mix bus/whatever is the final track of your signal chain) down to -infinity db. As long as all tracks are being sent/summed to this same master bus, this should result in them all being faded to silence. I have some other videos showing automation that might help if you’re unfamiliar with the process! Hope this helps!

      @@malcomowenflood I want to fade out all audio pieces, and not select them individually

    • @malcomowenflood
      @malcomowenflood Місяць тому

      This would do that for you, assuming all your audio is exiting via a single master output: create a master fader, automate the volume fade out as you'd like and you should be done! If you really want to see a fade out on the actual clips themselves, you could turn on the "ALL" Group in Pro Tools (groups are show in the lower left if you're not familiar" and then create a fade on one clip, and it will try to do it on any audio clips within that range - but I don't recommend this route as it's almost definitely bound to expand some clip regions and not work out, unless every clip is consolidated to the same ending point. BUT - just incase I'm misunderstanding and what you want is to apply a standardized length of fade out to various clips across the timeline (so not all at the same point on the timeline) you could select all (highlight all tracks and Command + A) and then Batch Fade (Command + F) - this will bring up the 'batch fade' dialogue which will allow you to set a fade out length for any clip that is currently selected (which should be all clips if you were able to select everything with the steps above). Very useful feature! You can set fade in's and cross fades across every clip in the session with just a few clicks using Pro Tool's batch fade tool!

I try to do this before recording guitars when possible as it really helps you lock in your guitar intonation while tracking too. I find that no how careful you are during bass tracking there is some irregularities with each instrument that still benefit from a light touch. • @malcomowenflood
      @malcomowenflood Місяць тому

      Hey there! Two possible Pro Tools features here causing this that I can think of: Most likely is that you have your tracks timebase set to “ticks” instead of “samples” - you should be able to change that right on the track via your edit window (you at need to expand your view options to see this option). The next guess is that you might have elastic audio turned on in for this track in Pro Tools, which would also cause it to react to the tempo map inside of Pro Tools. I believe you can set both of these in your Pro Tools Preferences to not happen by default too by the way! Hope this helps! Happy mixing/recording!

    Hello! Your explanatory videos are really good, but if you could speak slower, because for me French who has to follow the automatic translation into French and watch your mouse point at the different buttons it's a little too fast. So I know you want to be fluent and cool in your comment but think of all the people who don't understand English well. THANKS. (I'm the French guy on the space bar to stop the video and the left arrow to rewind the video by 5 seconds.)

    The extreme distortion on the master bus actually sounds super dope, in my opinion!! Would much rather setup a bus with distortion automation, or whatever works. The big takeaway is how this is going to play on other devices. It's going to create unintentional distortion with unknown artifact's depending on where it goes. I could sound good with just 2db added to the master, but sound awful on everything else, and not translate well. Either way, DON'T PASS 0.0db ON YOUR MASTER!! Great video Macolm :)
