  • The 11Alive exclusive ‘Jeffery’ series unravels the high-profile grand jury indictment of Atlanta rapper Jeffery Williams, better known as Young Thug. We explore the impact of the controversial indictment, which alleges that his prominent record label, YSL, is allegedly connected to street gang activity, according to Fulton County prosecutors.
    The recent events reignited a decades-long conversation about the use of rap lyrics in courtrooms across the country, the movement to protect Black art, and the precedent this case could set.
    As this notorious case nears a trial date, 11Alive’s ‘Jeffery’ series gives an exclusive lens into what this case means - legally, artistically and culturally. And where do the lines blur between art and reality?
    11Alive's Neima Abdulahi has conducted interviews with the key players, traced all the contours of both the case and the culture and brings the definitive telling of a defining Atlanta figure ahead of one of the most-anticipated trials the city has ever seen.

      @@mikael557 no other race has music that promotes violence, mistreating women and drugs as much as black culture. It has the highest homicide rate. Name gangs as famous as the bloods and the crips, that fight each other based on what street they live on. It is so corny. No other culture has corny names they call each other as commonly. No other culture has men who can't stay with one woman or has multiple "baby mamas" as a norm. I would literally expect a black man to have multiple children by multiple women. I'm not saying everyone is the same, but these stereotypes are based on some truths. There's such a victim mentality. We all saw what the first social media reaction was when his childs mother recently passed....he encompasses all of that as well, just as much as he makes beautiful songs and has interesting interviews. Nobody is one singular thing, but them boys had a chance to step all the way out and focus on just music and legit business....and they didn't, and now its gonna be what it is. They all tryna come home as soon as possible. I'm gonna keep listening to Young Thug, same way I'm gone remember how he had his lil babies stackin gang signs better than anyone should. But I have to disagree that lyrics to songs belong as evidence in a court case. That’s completely absurd. What if a shadow writer writes lyrics with a violent them for an artist and sells it to the artist for a flat fee? Then the artist gets the credits and authorship over the song. What if Young Thug didn’t even write these songs? How can the prosecution proof that he even wrote these lyrics? Maybe he didn’t write them. He may have just have bought them from someone else.

Seriously though he is leading other young kids astray with the BS propaganda he spews. No person is one dimensional and I believe many things can be true - Thug has done plenty of good things in his community but he also has a hand in a LOT of the gang violence and according to the government multiple murders. I honestly hope this helps him to change his life around because he has the ability to positively impact millions across the world. Because of the platform he has it comes with an inherent responsibility that he hasn’t taken seriously. The fact he rapped about shooting at Lucci’s mom after their VERY public beef is just crazy and takes self snitching to another level. He needs to take whatever consequences are coming his way and try to be a better person.

    It’s truly a problem that starts in the household. It’s like a runaway greenhouse effect. The young men have been gangbanging for so long they have children and continue to engage in organized crime/nefarious activities which gets them locked up. The young man’s child then grows up with no father figure, and ends up following the same path. State prisons are filled with father/son offenders. Father and brothers locked up. Kids and uncles. Kids and cousins. I knew people who were celled up with their uncles and distant cousins. Who just got moved out of their brothers cell. It’s a deep issue that needs addressing.

    This violence behavior in our communities need to change! It hurts us all! Whether it’s music or videos or shows, I encourage people in those positions to stop promoting threats & violence! There’s shootings everywhere affecting too many lives that matter! Young and old! One shooting affects a whole community not just those involved! So music does have a huge part in the mindsets and in the spirit of people! As far as this guy Jefferey : just so unfortunate of these circumstances he is dealing with! I pray for all of them bcz we all just walking a journey and we all have to pass to the other side! How one person affects everyone they come in contact with, on a daily basis, really affects the whole world! Stay UP, prayed up and Peace to all!

    Rap has been apart of a culture created to keep violence and negativity in our less fortunate communities. The people praising this form of self expression, are the ones who don't live in these communities but are greatly benefiting from it. For many of us it's just music and fun. But for many it's influencing negative behaviors. These young artist are often times already criminals before they reach success in the industry. They are given the wealth and fame with no intention of leaving behind the criminal mentality. Why should they when that's the life that got them rich and successful. Other youngsters see this and want the same. This is not helping our people.

      @LuigiMordelAlaume it's downright psychotic to listen to music that promotes your own genocide. If an individual is willing to express and brag about heinous crimes against their own on records for us all to hear, then your confession should be used to convict you of such crimes. Especially when there is other tangible proof of your wrongdoings. Let's not act like previous rappers have not been caught doing the same. And that bragging causes more violence and death. Errogance mixed with self hate and ignorance are truly more to blame than the law in this particular situation.

We admit to crimes & then get have a problem when the court uses it against us; we brag about killing & then get upset when one of our own dies; we talk about selling illegal substances to get money & then get mad when we end up locked up; we talk about how they keep us down, but then don’t use our voice & knowledge & experience & resources to help the next generation. …This is why - though I’ve listen to hip-hop/rap my whole life - I’m starting to give up on this whole “culture.” I wanna be part of a culture that helps each other rise up, that educates each other & keeps each other safe, & that teaches & educates one another.

    So watching this video I think everyone is looking past the fact that yes rap and hip hop music is an art form but if you decided to put your criminal confessions in your lyrics you’re going to be subjected to being “a target”. So I see nothing wrong with artist telling a story about what they see or their own life but if you have committed or have been involved in serious crimes why would you put that in your lyrics and think that wouldn’t be used against you in a court of law. I mean if Thug ordered assaults and murders in real life and these other defendants have carried them out, why would he think his crimes should be protected under the 1st Amendment? Maybe the prosecution is using these other guys as pawns but it seems like to me they have a big RICO case that’s isn’t solely based on rap lyrics but stone cold proof of crimes and the rap lyrics just solidify their case. All the guys so far hat have taken a plea know how this system works…they know they are pawns in this game and why should they go down for several decades to be loyal to the “leader” of YSL. Now they have 8 guys who have taken pleas and most of which under their pleas agreement must testify in Thugs upcoming trial so that sounds telling to me. Sounds like the state of Georgia has something on Thug, they not putting ppl on the witness stands that don’t know anything especially under the penalty of perjury. We’ll see how all this plays out. I understand “artist expression” but don’t confess to crimes in music or talk about them and think the government isn’t coming after you. Like T.I. said “this is the only genre of music they coming after!”

    • @Loud_bike_fast107
      @Loud_bike_fast107 Рік тому +1

      Exactly. I’m getting OJ Simpson vibes, I like thugs music, but if he raps about things that actually happened and ties can be drawn, how is it unfair? T.I killed it by explaining he probably never got out of it, and now people want to ignore the issue of crime, by turning it into a race and free speech issue. I think a lot of people believe what they want, rather than just seeing the face value. I think protect black art is a vail and cover for just blatantly ignoring possible societal issues. Why is it cooler and more popular to be the criminal? Sure we can blame racism, but it extends to all races in the hip hop/rap scene. I’d like to see people look at things logically, instead of blaming racism or “the system”.

    There’s a line between artistic expression (with hood lyrics) which is protected under the first amendment, and self incrimination. Saying “I’m a killer” is not the same as “I caught a body behind the juicy crab on Howell Mill”. I’m not saying YT had done that. But the more specific the lyrics become, the more it starts to drift into dry snitching territory. Also this is a RICO trial not a run of the mill street crime. I’m almost curtain they’re hanging their hats on more than 13 rap lyrics.

But there were plenty of lies, false testimony and false allegations. I know intimately that a trial isn't a search for TRUTH. It's a mission to CONVICT. I wasn't bitter about my conviction bcuz ultimately I was guilty of making some very bad decisions. But I know that what was reported, and even testified to, was not all truth. Not even 50% of it. And I know numerous men who were not just falsely accused, they were falsely convicted. One served 43 years in prison, right where I was at, and I thought he was lying when he we profess his innocence. A couple of years ago he was exonerated. So, I'm not saying ANYBODY is guilty until it's PROVEN. Witnesses and co-defendants will lie their azz off! Two men I had never met in my life testified that I told them things. I'm a hiphop head, not drill or gangsta rap though. Our historys greatest minds, scholars, philosophers, professors, musical geniuses, poets and profits of the people, from Socrates who said "THE RIGHT KIND OF MUSIC enables the soul of a man to develop the right kind of dislikes and likes, influential in creating appreciation for finer things"(GOOGLE THIS),,, to Shakespeare who spoke on musics powerful influence "Music creates mood and atmosphere, it CAN ILLUSTRATE your emotional state" he recommended listening to music that only inspires glorious creation, not destruction.. Sigmund Freud himself was afraid of the influence of music and he avoided most of it like the plague(direct quote, not my words), he listened to his own chosen few artists he deemed safe to his inspiration.... Then you have gangsta rap, almost constantly listened to by our youth who are already in situations where they have to decide to go THE RIGHT WAY OR THE WRONG WAY, and while they're contemplating this crucial life changing decision, their favorite rapper is coming right through those earbuds, RIGHT INTO THEIR EARS, persuading, influencing, glorifying, URGING THEM TO TAKE THE WRONG WAY, AND BE PROUD OF TAKING THE WRONG WAY BECAUSE THAT'S RNS!!!🤦🏿‍♂🤦🏿‍♂🤦🏿‍♂🤦🏿‍♂
      Many folks disagree and say "IT'S JUST MUSIC, CHILL OUT",,, well to them i reply, I TRUST THE WORDS AND OPINIONS OF THOSE GENIUSES I WROTE ABOUT AND ALL THE OTHERS WHO WROTE EXTENSIVELY ABOUT THE POWERFUL INFLUENCE OF MUSIC, MORE THAN I TRUST YOUR DUMBAZZES🤷🏿‍♂ so don't @ me..
