Did you know you can make your Fellow ODE coffee grinder stepless? People often complain that the Fellow ODE has stepped grind adjustment. However, making the ODE stepless is not only fast and easy, but also reversible if you find you don't like the results! Give this modification a try to take your Fellow grinder to the next level!

Thanks so much, this was super helpful
This is amazing
Nice one…did the mod…so pro. Thanks dude!
There as actually an easier way to do the stepless mod. Instead of removing the pin altogether, it can just be reversed so that the flat end is on the outside and the ball end is on the inside.
The flat end doesn’t fit on the grooves hence allows for a stepless rotation of the dial while still providing a constant resistance on it due to the presence of the spring on the other side.
The resistance is just enough that you don’t need to put any teflon tape for additional resistance.
Great tip!
@@LifestyleLab_ this is a very interesting tip! make the mod even simpler by not having to add the teflon tape. which make it 100% reversible, as having to take off teflon tape is a pita
Not enough resistance tho
The main reason for not considering the ODE is being a stepped grinder. The ODE is a beautifully designed machine and with this fix (hack) it's much more practical. Thanks for sharing this 🙌🏼.
Love my ODE!
Such a good looking design
Afraid of taking apart any machine, but I use this grinder for espresso (and decaf) and pour over, so this is great!
It’s not an espresso grinder
Curious how your espresso is going with the Ode 2??
The manufacturer says it's not intended for espresso. The motor isn't really up to it or designed for it. The teeth are also not designed for it.
Genuinely interested in whether or not you are still pulling shots after grinding with the ode!
"quiet chirping"
Is that the blades cutting each other slightly?
No, just the flat surfaces contacting :)
Will not damage the burrs
@@LifestyleLab_ This may have answered my question but it still gives me the heebyjeebies
Will this make it able to do espresso without damaging it?
No, the Ode is still not designed for espresso for a variety of other reasons (motor, burrs, etc)

Adjusting like this frightens me. I would think that the teeth touching like that is bad!
Not saying I'm right but on the face of it, it seems obvious.
having said that, I think mine needs resetting. :s
If you look at the burrs, the highest point on each is actually a flat surface. This is all that touches when the burrs are at chirp.
This is also how you would align the burrs, by putting a wipe of sharpie along one and seeing if it gets even removed from the entire circumference of the burr.
Completely safe :)
@@LifestyleLab_ great reply, thank you!.
I realigned according to the instruction, but now I have another question..
I turned it till I heard a kinda "weee" sound which I figured was the burrs contacting, but there was also a kinda rattle sound after backing off from the "weee" sound so I went one notch further and the rattle stopped.
Does that sound right, or did I adjust one notch too far? difficult to tell.
Thanks again!! Great video btw.
I don't know the details of the grinder called ODE, but if you make such a modification even though there is no resistance to the rotation of the dial, the mortar will be broken depending on the direction of rotation of the motor.
False.
I would love to see Part 2 of this though. Are you planning on doing it ?
What kind of part 2?
@@LifestyleLab_ would love to see how it grinds. Grind comparison would be really interesting, such as step adjustment vs stepless.
@@timothyj1706 I mean at the end of the day, stepless only means you can grind between the steps itself. The grind quality isn’t going to change, just the ability to dial in
Steps are great, even preferable, when they are fine enough. To bad they usually are not.
If you often switch back and forth between brew styles I agree!
If not, stepless is nice especially for espresso
did this today and when I went to but my dial plate back on, it won't turn freely. Lot's of friction when tightening the screws. Any ideas? I emailed Fellow
Are you sure the pin on the axle is aligned? There is a cross-bar that needs to fit into the groove
@@LifestyleLab_ are you referring to the auger key? If so, yes, that's seated right
Yes, that’s what I was referring to
@@LifestyleLab_ yeah, that seems to be seated correctly. Not sure why the dial is having trouble since everything seem to be correct and it has no trouble being zeroed
Did this about as soon as I got it, after putting SSPs in. Frankly the stepper almost seems like it was added to the design right before it went into production, it’s such a basic and silly component.
I haven’t had any appreciable drift; no more than my Niche has.
I also think the Ode is a poorly designed grinder (every single thing about it seems to have the worst possible design implementation decision), and I probably would have given mine away if those SSP burrs didn’t fit, but YMMV.
Is the SSP mod pretty easy? Any issues post install?
@@zagawrx I didn't have any issues with the install. I did have some extremely light roast beans jam the grinder once, but I was able to get it to clear without getting into the burr set, luckily. It is louder with the SSP burrs, I miss my quiet grinds.
I'm sure one of the other guys gripes is the shallow slope to the hopper, which is annoying. Having to push beans down every time is rather annoying. I'm kinda surprised they didn't release a new part with steeper slopes right after launch, maybe the pandemic and supply chain issues played into that 🤷♂️
What is the big difference between the ODE 120v, TYPE B Plug (£629) and 220v, Type G Plug (£299)? They got a really big price difference for what I first thought was just the plug type for the electric socket.
There is only one version of the grinder currently, at one MSRP regardless of plug type. If you’re seeing an elevated price like this, it’s likely just that the seller is running out of stock in that version and hiked the price temporarily. Happens quite often
