  • This was my absolute dream dress (at least in the historical / Renaissance period)! But after I made it 8+ years ago, there was a mishap, and this year I had to remake it. I am so excited for this! And the good news is that, now that I film my projects and upload them (unlike the era of the first time I made this), now I can share the whole process!

You've inspired me. Years ago I made my own dream dress. it was a gown worn by Bette Davis in the film " The private lives of Elizabeth and Essex. It was this beautiful pink with a raspeberry magenta velvet, the sleeves were striped and made from both fabrics with a lining of pearls. The scene you first see it in is near the end of the film, and it's in full length. Bette walks toward the camera so it almost looks like an Elizabethen fashion run way the camera never leaves her it's a long elegant shot. When I made mine i had to improvise a lot, also the skirt was a litte short. Now I want to remake it but this time make it historically accurate but keep the color scheme.

Hello there!! I am actually attempting to make one of the dresses from a Cranach portrait from around the same time period amd desperately needed this video, thank you so very much ♡♡ any chance i could pick your brain on a few of those measurements, or maybe humbly request a deeper analysis of the portrait and how the sleeve construction and assembly works?? That clip was so fast (and i understand both time constraints and endless sewing repetitions do not a long, interesting video make) that i couldnt grasp how it came together. Please let me know if you could/would be interested, thank you. Your cats are amazing, both gowns are utterly fantastic and fit you like you stepped out of the portrait, your skills are crazy!! Thank you so much for sharing this and documenting the process despite being a bit ill, and having a looming deadline!!! It came out a smashing success and you looked so beautiful!!

Ooh I am so excited for you! There is certainly so much to go over regarding these types of sleeves! As a next step, see if this video helps a bit more. These are constructed in a manner that is seen in a lot of Cranach's portraits: ua-cam.com/video/1tw9BlQGXaI/v-deo.html
I would be happy to provide more instructions as well. Hopefully this gives you a few more hints to get started!

@@DaisyViktoria i was actually wondering if you could provide the diameter of your outerskirt hem, please?? It looked somewhere between 4m and 5m when you laid it out on the floor to measure out the velvet stripe insertions. It just had the absolute PERFECT swoosh and fall of folds, mimicing what is seen in portraits of that time period!! Thank you so much for the reply and link! I will go check that out immediately! (Again you look absolutely fantastic in all your wondrous creations

(Written at 10 minutes into the video) How distressing to miss-clean that dress! Its nice that it may not be obviously ruined to someone who doesn't expect it to look a certain way. The color surely did change, though! Perhaps when you recreate the dress, upgrading and improving it, you'll appreciate having a less exquisite version!

I think the old dress still looks great. 🙂 Don't see it as ruined. You can still use it. 😊 If you hadn't said that it was supposed to be a brighter red then I wouldn't know there was anything wrong with it. Just use it for something else. Maybe dye it purple and make it a regal dress? 🙂 Since royalty wore purple.

Ah yes, the irritated miaowing of a cat whose human slave is failing to pay it sufficient attention - I know this too well. I see you are also being well supervised during the process 😂
