- In today's video, I'm going to capture one of my favorite amps my BAD CAT CUB 111 30 R.
This fantastic amp is the best I've heard at producing Vox AC30-type tones. Where the Vox tends to flub out at certain volumes, the Bad Cat stays really articulate. But is this capture going to sound as good as the real thing?

The future is amazing in this regard. Everything else on the other hand... loool. Not so much. But hey... at least we have epic guitar tones to see us through until the last light goes out. 🤣
Tonex is such a game changer. I’ve been profiling my amps so I could use it as a solution for tracking overdubs while I’m on the road and it’s been perfect.

Don’t get rid of your amp for software! Even if you’re going to be in a small room, build an iso cab in the closet! I got rid of my amp for a Helix.. I do love it, it’s super versatile and easy, plugins are also great, and some sound even better than the Helix tbh, but it’s just not the same as a tube amp in the room when you want it. I’ll always hear my old recordings as having better tones, and I think that’s something to do with dialing in a real amp in the room and hearing the true sound, not hearing it coming through studio monitors or other digital processing in the amp sim, you just get that true amp tone from the speaker to your ears as you dial it in before recording.
ToneX is awesome, and I’ll always be cool with using an amp sim, profiler, or modeller, but I’ll also always be missing that amp tone. I guess I need to get one again lol.

Thank you for the Bad Cat profile. I loaded both into my version of Tonex and they are amazing! I think the Bad Cat takes the best of a Vox AC30 and adds in the Marshall growl. I'll be using these sounds for sure. Thanks again!
How did you download them? Im in Tone net typed BAT CAT CUB 111 30 R and nothing comes up tried it under player and under librarian.

This is a fantastic capture. Love the clarity and the way it takes pedals. I have used it a lot the last few months. Curious, is it the EF86 tube that has been captured here?
I’m sure someone will say they can hear a difference or have a preference-and perhaps playing the two back to back you get a sense for a different response or feel-but there is no discernible difference in sound to me. Pretty amazing, really.

Loving Tonex so far! Although I think we need to be able to "lock" cabs (and amps/verbs) so we can flip though amps with a fav cab... or vise versa. This is esp true in Amplitube 5. We could lock in a tonex amp... and then scroll thru presets. the way can in Kemper's Rig Manager. Also would like to be able to save "models" with a different cab or verb. Why always have to hear the same amp w/o a cab when scrolling thru models. Don't wanna have to save as a preset. Also a default plugin size for every time we load it. I'm sure it's gonna evolve.
Killer capture!!!. Just a little clarification, "profile" is a patented term by Kemper. The proper word to use is Capture.
Nice one Paul... I've been tinkering with the IK supllied tone models but this Bad Cat capture is marvellous! Downloaded them both from ToneNET.. now on my favourites list!

Thanks for showcasing ToneX, I've been using it and it sure is a blast.
I notice that a lot of the IK Multimedia especially the Dumble clones all act and perform differently.
I assumed that once you captured an amp, that's it, but theres multiple copies and they all behave slightly different. Would this be for different settings on the amp Drive channel / clean etc, or would it be for adjustments in like a gain knob etc?
Also on your second preset with the pedal, how does that behave in ToneX as there is no pedal control to adjust settings?

It certainly is a great way for people who don’t have space or funds to get the tones of these expensive/ large amps.

Cheers Timothy for all your positive comments. You’ll need to buy the full version if you want to use the user profiles. It is worth it though as you’ll have access to loads of boutique amp profiles.
Paul & Timothy, hope it’s ok to chime in. I’m pretty sure that the free version allows you to download a few user profiles.. I think you’re allowed 20..BUT you can’t replace them once they’ve been downloaded & once you’ve used up all your 20 user profile slots you can’t create new free slots by deleting those profiles..so unless you’re haapy to upgrade & so get additional free slots, you need to choose your downloads with that in mind. Paul thanks for all your online output & for introducing me to ToneX.

Sounds great. What I’m a little confused about is, how are you listening to both the amp and the ToneX? I would imagine studio monitors or something? Are you listening directly out of the amp and then for the ToneX directly out of studio monitors? I ask because wouldn’t there be a big difference from a cabinet to monitors? I’m still learning about these new devices. Thanks.
That Tonex model sounds nothing like my 65 JMI AC30. I'm playing it right now. Through my Quad Cortex. The capture thing has been a real game-changer for me. I've heard the Kemper sound really bad live and it's extremely funny looking so I was biased against it. I guess I was missing out. Oh well, I have the Quad Cortex now and the Tonex software for making my own amps into plug-ins. I have had really good luck with third-party IR's. The Tone Junky everything pack with the greenbacks, alnicos, and Jensens are really good and sound correct. I guess they are made from the actual vintage speakers and cabinets and they are done right.
Sounds really good! How do you set levels on the interface when playing? How hot do you drive the the levels?
It gives you a warning when it’s too hot or not hot enough.
I run a Intellifex Stadium verb into a TC HOF2 plate setting to get that Vahalla shimmer thingola...not quite as good, but amazing nonetheless!
Have you tried to profile a pedal separately, then stack them in Amplitube 5, and then compare to the real amp with the real pedal in front (note, I'm not talking about capturing the pedal and amp together)? If so, how have the results been so far? I have seen just one video of doing this so far, and the results were surprisingly lacking. I say surprising because the standalone captures seem to be amazing and a little better than the Neural Quad Cortex, but the QC stacks drive pedals well and I therefore expected even better results from ToneX.
For some reason this is not showing up on my ToneNet. I searched "Bad Cat" in the presets but is says no results.
what are we hearing the Tonex through? FRFR, PA, Studio Monitors?

Hi Paul! I really enjoy your captures but can I ask you, what TRIM IN volume level do you suggest using in the Global TONEX settings? 6-7? Thank you!
I've noticed that this TRIM IN level is really important and can make a capture sound amazing or dull.
Any chance you can capture and bypass the cab sim ?? The captorx does a great job but having the flexibility to tweak the speaker IR gives an even bigger range of options.
You could just plug a head in to loadbox and capture that. No speaker cab so you can play around with IRs.
Could do a cool alternative Kings of Leon with that tone and shimmer. Just sayin. 😉

I tried the help forum at IKmultimedia but I can't find anything useful there so I thought I'd ask you. I find the capture diagram that appears inside ToneEX at step 3 incomprehensible.
I have a Presonus as an IN (it has outs which I don't use) which connects to my Mac, wherein the Tonex SE resides, there's an out from that to a Mojo DAC which goes to a small class D amp to my monitor speakers.
I thought I knew how to connect, I can get a sound from Tonex but capturing is a different story: on the modelling diagram step 3 what's a re-amplification box and an amp recording box (is that my computer?) and what's the Output device (my mojo?) what's the input device (my Presonus?) If you have any words of wisdom or pointers to other sites I'd appreciate it.

Hi Paul- i am using the original Bat Cat - Palisades capture from here as my main tone. Was the picture used in the video of the pedal showing the accurate settings? or can you recall the settings you would have used? I'm considering just buying the pedal for more flexibility. So i can put boost after it etc

Hi Paul this is Selva form India. Just picket my ToneX pedal and I would like to capture my amp profiles into my Tonex Pedal. I understand you use the re-amp box method and not the ToneX Capture unit. Can you help me with the connections. My set up is Presonus Studio 24c, Radial re-amp box, Two notes Captor for load and also have a speaker connected just in case if needed. Looking forward to your inputs. Thanks
