To add onto what Parth mentioned, one thing I kept in mind was the type of university campus I will be in for the next two years or so when deciding which university to go for. I, personally, preferred a campus that was vibrant and gave me a well rounded life.
After coming to USA, I went around and visited my friend’s’ university campuses and I cannot stress more on the fact that university campuses and the state you are in affects you a lot.
Another thing I have observed is that though my university (Texas A&M University) is ranked almost as good as University of Minnesota. UMN has a better VLSI program but TAMU gave me a location advantage. Most of us had internships and interview calls even before the first semester ended. We had companies like Tesla, SpaceX and what not come to our campus for career fairs solely because of our alumni network and location advantages. Being an Aggie has helped me a lot till date. Before you choose your university, research more about their alumni network. 80% of the time, opportunities come to you because of the former students. Hope this helps.

Locations are important for jobs in tech companies. Don't depend on career fairs. Bay areas have more internships opportunity and later on jobs. There are are many examples where avg universities gets a highly paid jobs means better ROI than higher ranked colleges. Plus locations are important for more industry aligned courses. It matters if you want a job or pursue research post your masters.

Well I would like to add a point in the location domain. What if a university with a very good ranking, situated in a rural area or almost a small town(we can consider the universities in Michigan) and another university-not so pretty good in rankings, stands relatively lower but is located in a much modern, urban and metropolitan city. In this situation the opportunities will always be better in the second case and i think that most of the students will opt for the 2nd University. The point I am trying to make is that dont consider the university on the basis of which courses are famous in which areas of the US, but choose a university which is situated in a good city, has plenty of opportunities. The bigger and better the city, the better your future opportunities will be.

Great video. Can you give us more information about the criteria that top ranking universities look for when selecting their graduate students? I know people with very low scores who have gotten into highly ranked programs as opposed to people who got very high scores and still got rejected. What makes a great application?

I was planning for fall 2021 in construction management and was thinking to go to Bradley University because they give me 25% scholarship on tuition fees whereas for Purdue University they said that they are no fee waivers and assistance ships are tough to get. Hey, I have been accepted to Umass Amherst .I am getting a chancellors scholarship of 10000 dollars per academic year. But the problem is that I have been given computer engineering not computer science. Will I be able to change my major later?
I don’t think location factor was evaluated fairly in this video. For instance, people don’t prefer west coast because there are more research papers, people prefer west coast for its better job opportunities

by this logic a normal college will never grow at all coz recruiter will always going to pick up the big brand one, and moreover to all the students going for tier 2 or 3 universities, there is a whole lot of difference between a big brand and a generic brand, so dont ever consider your tier 2 or 3 university as a 'generic' one, companies wil surely be aware about your universities, yes not as much as the big ones but its not going to be as low as for a generic one, so its perfectly fine if you're choosing location over brand or any other factor...
