Use this gardening hack to get your carrots to germinate quicker and more evenly! Burlap is the perfect solution for getting carrots and other small garden seeds to germinate quickly and evenly. Burlap works especially well in the later summer and fall when the hot outside temperatures can be a challenge for germination!

Hey Gang! I hope you enjoy today's garden trick! This one really works well to get your carrots to germinate in the fall!
What a good idea! I’m in 8a and for the last two years, I’ve used newspapers but they are getting hard to find. I get good even germination. I like this idea as it’s sustainable for me.
And the burlap will last for years!

I have appreciated knowing what to grow in my zone 7b garden thanks to you! I don’t know how to clean up to get ready for my fall garden. Do I compost my VBS infested plants (cukes, mellons, squash even finding them on green beans) or do I put them in the garbage? I use grow pouches, 5 and 10 quart sizes. Do I need to dump that soil and refresh with new or some organic ingredients. Thanks for your help.
I used my row covers and it worked very well
Yes I use row covers for many of my leafy greens crops and they work well.
This is my second season using this and also I used cardboard . Works so well
Yes, when I stated using burlap it was a game changer!!
I've used a 2x6 for years and it worked for me. Keep it moist. When they break ground take board off. They need to be moist all the way

Hi Rick...I tried the burlap method and sowed the seed on August 27. I just checked this morning September 4, and they are up! 8 days, which corresponds to your result. Since the burlap didn't quite cover the 4x4 bed I was using, I covered the remaining area with weed blocking cloth that lets water pass through. This is not a tightly controlled experiment, but it seems like the seeds under the weed block are actually coming up a bit stronger than the burlap...there are more seedlings it seems. Also I have not been watering the burlap every day, but the bed does have drip line and the soil has been kept moist.
Seems like this should work for many other plants as well...we will give it a try next season!

Hi method looks great I will try it this year what are the white pipes and why are they there? Many thanks for your time.
The pipes are my pvc drip irrigation system.
I use scrap peg board for this. The holes let in some light, air & water. Keeps out birds other critters. Also keeps the seeds & seedlings from washing away or out during a downpour. Better than a solid carrot board because I can leave in on longer.

Should you moisten the garden bed prior to putting seeds down as well?
I don't like planting in wet soil. It makes things very hard to handle.
Rats! I had a couple of rolls of burlap sitting in my basement for a few years but we donated it to a Sally Anne thrift store last year, I had no use for it I thought. I sure had trouble with my carrot germination this season, I always take the measure of way over seeding (about 1500 seeds in a 4’ by 10’ bed) and I water well every day with my super gentle Haws watering cans. This usually works well but not this June, we had crazy variable weather and only a few carrots came up. I think your burlap method might have made all the difference!

Sure wish I'd known this on July 31 when I planted turnips, radishes, and carrots. Nothing at all has appeared, and I don't know whether they would still germinate if I put burlap on now, or if I should give up on those seeds and start new ones now. As of today, 65 days left til average first frost.
If it were me I would start over with fresh seeds, and do it quickly you are running out of time for this season.
Do you think this would work as well with row cover fabric?
Row cover fabric does help a lot, but the burlap soaks in that water and helps keep the seed bed moist ever better!
I'm in the PNW and we have a huge slug problem. Wouldn't the use of covering with burlap harbor slugs?
As long as the slugs weren't under the burlap to begin with you will be fine. In fact the burlap will help keep them out.
I've tried burlap once before and whit fuzziness started growing under it and no seeds germinated. I attributed that to lack of airflow. Any tips there? You are also using landscape burlap and I used recycled coffee bean bags. Your weave is lighter.
I've never had "fuzziness" under mine. I have a feeling that your issues were coming from that tighter weave. Mine seems to allow plenty of air flow.
Can you use a sheer curtain or bug netting
Both would be helpful, but not quite as effective.
I read to place a board over the row.
That will work as well, but with burlap you are able to leave it on for a few days after the seeds germinate so they can get some size on them. With the board you have to take it off as soon as they germinate.
Can you use burlap for a 40% shade cloth?
You could use is as a shade cloth. I have no idea what % it would be.
What about using shade cloth instead?
The only issue there is it won't hold the water as well because it is plastic.
Can I use a 70% shade cloth?
That will help, but it won't hold on to the moisture as well.

What if cannot find burlap?
If all else fails you can find it online at many garden supply shops or even on Amazon.
But if you have a farm store or a nursery near by they there first.
Fabric store, even!??
Y not just plant them a few days earlier if u have to have them germinate at a certain time..don't see th use of this..lots more work..just plant them sooner..good luck everyone...
This time of year with the heat it is very hard to get carrots to germinate in our area.
Please be careful with burlap. Most burlap that is sold in "fabric and craft stores" has been treated with formaldehyde. UNLESS it SAYS formaldehyde-free, assume that it's been treated with formaldehyde. If you're unsure, ask the seller. If the seller does not know, or if you don't know the seller well, assume that it has formaldehyde unless it comes with a label that says otherwise. I worked for a major craft retailer for 13 years.
