Question from a newbie. Isn’t it a good idea to also change the lifter on the failed rocker arm? @@OnlineMechanicTips Wow. Thanks for the quick response. I think i left same comment on some of your other vids to. I would hope so. They said they checked front bank first and found nothing then did back and found the collapsed lifter. Would a stretched timing chain or bad tensioner make a similar sound? Subscribing and liking. @@pnorton75 Thanks bud. Sure a collapsed lifter will cause a noise, but a rocker arm will also, in fact, so will a cam phaser. (depends on the noise). I dont see any reason one would replace a camshaft because of a failed lifter. One of the coming apart rocker arms likely got by them. There are certain ways to check that and a dealer tech should know all of such ways. To me, none of this matter, seems you should have the option to return the van and get it rechecked because basically, you still have the same problem. Wow, this crazy. You should not be hearing a ticking noise after a ticking repair has just been done.

Hi JT: how hard is it to rotate crank shaft? I saw you used a break bar to do it. Cannot rotate the engine last time since I was afraid too much force could damage timing chain. Best regards
The crank bolt can easily take the torque required to rotate the engine. If it won't rotate relatively easy you probably jumped timing and you have interference between valves and pistons
Thanks for all of the helpful knowledge and tips. What do the bearing caps need to be torqued to? When loosening them I broke a T-30, mainly because they were cheap, but the only torque specs I found were 89 in-lbs.

I have a 2014 Durango. 3.6. Passenger side rocker failed on intake. The intake came phaser came off in 2 pieces. Also the timing chain tensioner tool fell out. How can I compress the chain again? And is the phaser bad because it came apart.

@@OnlineMechanicTips it is a Journey 2011, the most difficult for me was to remove the camshaft position sensors cause is so uncomfortable and the harness behind the cover closest to the cabin cause it is hidden behind. I just replaced one of mine. Crazy what you have to do to get a $10 part out. I drive a Wrangler with the 3.6
Thats whats up man. Those Wranglers are not easy, lots of tight things to get off, but glad you got er done. Thanks for watching. Please thumbs of the video and sub the channel for me, thanks
I cannot get the phaser back on. Tried everything you recommended
i have a 2013 charger v6 just started ticking im not changing one rocker im changing all of them
Well thats what you should do dude. I dont believe I suggested that you do just one in this video..
Just got my 2015 T&C back from dealer, they replaced bad lifter and camshaft and phaser do to damage from lifter. But it's still making same ticking sound. What gives?
Well damm, did they inspect the rocker arms? which is usually the problem. O and are you subscribed to the channel, if not, please do. Thanks
Thanks.
@@OnlineMechanicTips Yes I am taking it back. I had less than 100 miles left on my 100,000 mile max care warranty when i took it in. They said they would leave the ticket open so if i go over the 100,000 before i get it back to them (which i will) it will still be covered. Just glad this tech actually heard the ticking. The first time I took it in a month ago the tech said he didn't hear anything. All depends on the luck of the draw if you get a competent tech or not. Thanks again.
Are the solenoid actuators in the cam phasers preventative maintenance items? Or, do they usually not need replaced? Thanks for the video!
Hi JT: do I need to take spark plugs out to rotate the camshaft?
No, unless you have the number 1 plug out trying to see if engine up to TDC
@@OnlineMechanicTips Hi JT: appreciate your prompt help. Had some hard time to rotate camshaft through crankshaft last time. I probably didn't apply enough force.
Can you rotate camshaft with all spark plugs off?
Fixing to start on my wife's 2012 chrysler town and county, ticking sound that sounds like its in the rear. It started with a misfire code, i replaced spark pkugs an coil packs an the code went away, but the motor started ticking. On the rear do u line up the lines or arrows before tampering with the cam??
Hey bud if you working on bank 1 then yes, the lines should be lined up. You might want to watch this other video if you plan on removing the cam phasers and the timing chain. Also, are you subscribed to the channel? ua-cam.com/video/oUHN1GRMC7M/v-deo.html
@@OnlineMechanicTips yeah I have subscribed days ago. Without your videos i wouldn't feel as confident as i do goin into this. Which Iv done alot of different jobs in auto mechanics but never messed with valvetrains until now. Its intimidating work if you dont understand it. But your videos gave me alot of understand on things I didnt know. Again thank you for that. I try to do my own auto work cause there are so many shady mechanics nowadays, you jus can't trust anyone to do u right.
@@ChiraqVet lol, I feel you bud. Thanks
I was really hoping i didnt have to buy anymore tools, but it looks like Im gonna have to get an inch pound torque wrench. I got a foot pound wrench that starts at 10 pounds but thats prolly overkill huh?
Hey Bro, this video was needed I dropped $1100 on a 2015 dodge journey rt 3.6L cylinder 2 was misfiring, I have the same ticking sound, which let me know the rockers are sh!ty! My question for you is if all 6 ignition coils and plugs were changed, fuel injector was tested and cylinder 2 still misfiring, what could possible be the issue?
Hey my friend, when im faced with such a problem, I always go to my compression test. If you have a misfire AND a ticking noise, theres a chance that its related, meaning a broker rocker arm cold cause both. Was that the only code you getting P0302? Also are you subscribed to the channel?
Ive got a 2015 chrysler 300s awd 3.6L and its starting to tick like that is that covered under the power train warranty?
Hello my friend, it depends on the coverage the car has and the miliage . How many miles on car? O and please like the video and subscribe to the channel for me, thanks
@@OnlineMechanicTips its got 96,000 and I got the 100,000 mile power train warranty and i did i like the videos and subscribed already but thank you for posting them 🙏
@@OnlineMechanicTips also I just installed a throttle body spacer and everytime i make a complete stop my car kinda like shuts off like the rpms will drop but if i come to a stop n it does that of i turn on my a.c while stopped the rpm go back up like it doesnt do it when my a.c if on
O good, that tick noise should be covered under the powertrain warranty..curious, why the throttle body spacer?
@@OnlineMechanicTips adds extra throttle response I have a cold air intake too
Good video, I am about to attempt this myself. I have a horrible ticking, and I think its coming from both banks. Super frustrating since I no longer have a warranty and only 54K miles. I do have a few questions though. What size sockets did you use for the crank shaft and oil control valve? Did you replace anything else while doing this job, i.e. valve cover gaskets, spark plugs, pcv valve? Any other recommendations? Thanks
Hey man I've got a question on a 2017 promaster with the 3.6 the dimple on the exhaust cam phaser won't line up but the intake phaser dimple lines up? Am I just not in TDC? Or was is not timed right to begin with?
That one is not suppose to line up..focus on the 2 lines on both phasers..they should line up..also are you subscribed to the channel?
@@OnlineMechanicTipsgot it thanks. Of course man you do some great work!

JT I need to source parts, rocker arm and lifters and also the timing kit

Well my 2016 town and country is back at dealership..this time its a failed rocker on cylinder 1 intake, cylinder 2exhaust, both motor mounts are failed, man why me?
Awhhhh bud, sorry to hear that..
Where are you located? i need this done
Hey bud, sorry, we in the Atlanta Ga area.
Brother. I hear ticking noise from bank 2 but it's only when the car heat up also I got P2096 code and made me confused if it's an exhaust leak or rockerarm failure
Is a bad rocker arm or lifter ticking or clicking noise accompanied by engine knock? Thank you for just returning my other question.
That is possible but I have yet to hear such a double noise.
Hey JT, how long does it take to complete this job from start to finish?
Hey bud, it depends on what all you doing and your skill level. I because I do not use special set up tools and im familiar with the timing it will likely take me a couple hours. But thats a misleading answer so its a hard question to answer.
I have a 2014 Durango. 3.6. Passenger side rocker failed on intake. The intake came phaser came off in 2 pieces. Also the timing chain tensioner tool fell out. How can I compress the chain again? And is the phaser bad because it came apart.
Hey bud, im not understanding here. What do you mean the chain tensioner tool fell out? It is usually placed in the correct spot and stays there until removed..O and please like the video and subscribe to the channel. Also yes, that phaser should be replaced if it came apart. Before you comment back, please sub the channel for me
Ok I subscribed. When pulling the cam it came with it. So that let the tensioner extend. I see that you don’t use the tools anyway. How are you compressing the tensioner
Ok bud, you can remove the cam/phasers without the tool..but you may need the tool to compress the tension arm back into its bore and use a Granade pin to hold it there..I have a video I'm going to upload tommorro showing how this is done
Is it the same for driver and passenger side? Mine is the passenger side
What size socket is used to turn the crankshaft?
Hey bud, thats a 1 1/16 socket..Thanks for watching, please like and subscribe to the channel please, thanks
What's your location I need you to fix mines asap
Hello my friend, we in the Atlanta Ga area in Snellville. If you in the area, please give us a call, thanks
JT I finally got both valve covers off and tried your patented feel test but nothing seemed loose. What size socket is that on the crankshaft to rotate the engine?
Awhhh bud, I dont know it by hard..I would have to check tommorro. But yes, rotate it and check all with the lobes off of the valve
@@OnlineMechanicTips thanks. I'm about to rotate now
What s that cost at a shop ???

My problem is that them can bearing bolts are straight trash and one took a dump on me now I’m tryna figure out how to get it out and put in a fresh one 😩😩😩
I’m here trying to figure out how to do a 5.7 hemi rocker arm/shaft check.
Hello my friend. The 3.6 Pentastar engine and the 5.7 Hemi different when it comes to checking for vavle train noises/faults. The hemi needs to be torn down much deeper the the 3.6 to find/view problem. So your comment basically can only go as far as listening for valve train noise. Any thing else, engine will need to be torn down..Thanks for watching, please like the video and subscribe to the channel for me, thanks

How do you replace a rocker arm from the cylinder #1 without remove the time belt? I just replaced the #3 and it was easy, but the #1 is hard cause the camshaft is not lifting when I loose the screws, good video btw
Thanks for watching bud, I see you are a subscriber, thats whats up..Yes, cyl 1 is the closest to the timing chain. It will be hard to pull that off without removing timing. What kind of car is this?
@@OnlineMechanicTips it is a Journey 2011, the most difficult for me was to remove the camshaft position sensors cause is so uncomfortable and the harness behind the cover closest to the cabin cause it is hidden behind. The funny part is that after replace it everything was smooth after 2 hrs driving we heard the sound again, now the sound show up when the engine is warmed, I am sure is the #1 cause I felt it loose a littlebit, I didn't replace it cause is close the time chain and we couldn't lift the camshaft.
Thank you.
For the love of Christ, 6 shop rags in the intake manifold ports, before you drop a bolt down one of them. If your going to pull the lower intake manifold for oil canister repair, then 6 shop rags in the head intake ports as well.
This video was done over 3 years ago. I've since learned that a lot of folks are like drama queens and get real serious and passionate about stuff like this. So yes, that does not look good on video and you should def cover up those ports. Never had a problem or anything fall down in there and theres no reason to keep risking that.. Good call but theres more material on this video worth mentioning dude.
Damn my charger has been doing this for a hot minute... sounds like a Cummins
Great job 👏🏽
Thanks for watching Dave, please thumbs up the video and consider subscribing, thanks
Awesome vid! Thank you for doing this. Is it possible to get all of the lifters out without removing chain/cam sprockets/camshafts? Subbed to your channel by the way
Thanks for subbing bud. Yes its possible but its also risky to somebody that has not done one. You have problems with rocker arms in cylinder # 2 and #1. I do not do it this way because it is easier for ME to simply remove the cam phasers and the chain. This may not be easy for somebody else. Thanks for watching
@@OnlineMechanicTips Thanks for the reply! Great answer. I think I’ll order the tools and do it the right way. I haven’t got in there just yet but I think I’m going to need a camshaft anyway so will be pulling phasers. It’s making a dull thud right after the tick. You mentioned that if it makes a thud it will likely need a camshaft. No CEL or misfires and still runs smooth. The tick is very obvious though. how about that, patented field testing, lol
