Nope. The handheld won’t be a mass market device that’s subsidised. It will be for the enthusiasts who want to emulate games and play their Game Pass library.
The series S is what the WiiU was to nintendo. To me the Series S is the next generation Xbox Handheld in it's testing cycle. That it worked it's another conversation. With that said, I think that was the reason wanted to have parity between the two consoles. Or at least that was the plan so in the future when they do release (if they are at all) a handheld, it could have parity between the "what ever the next generation Xbox is called" and the "Xbox Handheld ".
My guess is that Sony and MS are saying their handhelds are years away because Nvidia already announced they’re making new ARM SoCs so they’re waiting to see how that looks. Just happy Nintendo already has a partnership. DLSS will help a lot with docked mode.
@ Yeah, that’s why I haven’t picked up a Steam Deck or Ally. Only 2 hours of play time with a triple A title is straight unacceptable. I have been playing Infinity Nikki on iPad. It runs surprisingly well and battery life has been in the hours. Not sure if you’ve tried it? It’s a PS5 game with an iPad port.
If the Strix Halo iGPU turns out to be as good as rumors suggest (roughly 4070 mobile level) then I personally don't see how it would be a problem for Sony to get a handheld to market in 3 years that can run all PS5 software by default, at least using the base PS5 code path.
And Nintendo Switch too. That thing has been out for too long, and shows hardware manufacturers, that sitting on old hardware is viable instead of Innovating.
What about a handheld with a SoC that’s able to run 1080p with options for home gaming with a 1440p dock that’s equivalent to Series S and 4k dock that’s equivalent to Series X. Throw in some AI up scaling and you have multiple tiers and an easier upgrade path.
I don’t think they’ll force equivalence for handheld support like they do for Series S currently. I think it’ll be a separate target in the ecosystem, not required that devs support it. Some games will target it and work, some will only work on the actual console. Just will depend on what the developer feels like targeting.
However, if the "bigger" console automatically supports games released on the "handheld" that's a big win ! But I think Valve are about to beat everyone at this ecosystem strategy.
I’d say most people who buy a handheld are gonna play games using the small screen that it comes with, which means that the resolution can be lower, without looking any different. This makes supporting demanding games on the handheld a lot easier than people think
@@FlorentChardevel What I think give Steam the advantage is that devs do not "have to" design their games for the Steam Deck. If it's an games meant for a generation of the Xbox, they kinda have to unless it is based on the Windows version of the Xbox which would probably be the better route to go
Making it an independent handheld system would be like Sony introducing the PSP or the PSVita. The latter failed completely. I highly doubt that either Sony or Microsoft want to take that risk. Any independent handheld system would also have a very hard time competing against the Switch 2.
@@cube2fox it won’t be an independent system architecture though like the PSP, it would run the same code and OS as the normal console, only differentiated by power difference.
If the next gen needs to have parity with a sku that is around series s, will that not make ps5/series s relevant for the entire generation because can play the handheld version of ps6 games?
@xtr.7662 but on going cross gen support for the PS4 would suggest that publishers will stick ps6 games on ps5 often if the ps5 can easily run portable ps6 titles. It's a massive install base, there is precedent for it, so why wouldn't they?
There won't be a PS6. It will be a PS5 Pro Max or something. Generational leap has ended with the PS5. Sony couldn't afford to maintain 2 separate ecosystem. That's why PSP and PS Vita both failed. This time, I think they'll simply make the base PS5 (maybe underclocked) a handheld. If that's so. It means PS6 will have to be 100% compatible with it in order to remain 1 single ecosystem. Therefore, there won't be a "PS6" even if they name it PS6 it's basically just a PS5 Pro Max.
The playstation handheld will win when it comes to exclusives and a larger player pool for console only. But when it comes to Xbox has a hand since been reported and leaked that the handheld will be a hybrid pc gaming handheld that not only play console games but also pc games.
As a Nintendo fan, it's been so wonderfully bizarre starting off 2017 with people either confused or mocking the concept of a hybrid console handheld device, and then here. We are now going into 2025 and not only is the switch arguably the best-selling console ever created and the Steam deck has revolutionized portability for PC gaming that now the rivals of the so-called "dinosaur company that makes baby games" are now basically playing catch up to the form factor. 😅
I think a portable S isn't possible or really needed at launch. An X and S at launch and portable S mid gen is probably the only way it could work technology wise and with so many cross gen games now days I don't think releasing it late in the gen is a problem.
Yea for sony and microsoft making a series s level handheld is a really bad idea specially since they want it to release in 2026-2028 which will be quite expensive its better to release at least 2030 and forward since it will be cheaper
If this is the case it is going to hamstring how the fully fledged next gen consoles get used, likely these games will be designed for the lowest common denominator which will be the handheld if this is the case, while the real console gets a higher detail, resolution and fps version of the game, almost like changing the settings on a pc game. The handhelds will be similar power to this gen probably less, so i dont see next gen being that transformative in terms of graphics. This generation already was barely that transformative over last gen, so thats another generation thats barely different than ps4 level.
Agree. But I think the industry needs to take a step back in power, like Nintendo did when they made the Wii. Consoles aren't supposed to be the most powerful gaming hardware. PCs are the most powerful gaming hardware, which is why they're so expensive. Consoles are supposed to be cheaper and more convenient. I feel like Microsoft got Sony into a graphics arms race, and they need to get out of that. They need to get development costs under control. And they need to stop trying to make consoles more like PCs. Sony released the PS4 Pro and PS5 Pro to try to compete with PCs, and they shouldn't do that. They just have to make great games within the limitations of their hardware, like Nintendo does.
Nintendo already did innovate with the switch wdym? Ever since the switch we've gotten these clowns ass pc handhelds trying to copy it or follow in it's footsteps. And no, this will not affect nintendo because they've been king at handhelds for over 30 years Sony tried once and failed
That would require them to make a handheld at a fairly low cost. Talking, $200 up to maybe $300? On top of that, I think they would need to include an HDMI out. So people would have the option to hook it up to their TVs if they want to. The crazy thing is, all of this seems to be a power-play to try to eat into Nintendo‘s market. Which, I don’t think Microsoft or Sony truly gets… that it’s not the hardware, it’s the games that sells Nintendo units. If Nintendo was to do the same thing that Microsoft is doing, except with Nintendo games… Guaranteed they would take over the market. Imagine a Nintendo game pass equivalent. Even though, I don’t think that will ever happen… Because Nintendo already makes a ton of money selling their games. The point is, at any time Nintendo could drop the bomb. I haven’t owned a Nintendo system since the original Wii. So I really have no horse in the race. I just see the possibilities, if Nintendo wanted to compete. Regardless, I don’t think a handheld is a bad thing for Microsoft. Whether or not it will be successful, maybe. Especially if they combine PC and Xbox, which will also open up PlayStation games. Though, Sony could always pull the plug on or change PC licensing agreements to exclude Xbox. Though they would be losing out on that money. Not to mention, PC versions come out much later than their PlayStation counterparts. We will see what happens. I truly do think that Microsoft needs to hire a new marketing team. Because the one they have, does a horrible job at enticing anybody to become a new Xbox owner and staying one. Simply releasing a handheld doesn’t mean success and, if you can play Xbox on any device… Including a phone, why would you buy a handheld? When you could just pay $50 and get a cool joystick rig for the phone or simply connect your Xbox controller to the phone?
It have to be next gen thats the only way the handheld can run ps5 and Xbox games native since console games don't have pc level graphics settings and need to wait for a patch
And now no one will worry about that portable consoles being stop the improves like they told that series S is let improving on the better consoles down …. Like launching the ps5 pro and she isn’t using her full potential because of the ps5 . People tend to forget the last years that they use lower end consoles to justify lack of optimization. Anyway Let’s see , I’m yet to buy another portable after switch v1 and lite … maybe I buy switch 2 because of the back comp ability and wait for next chip for Lenovo or ally
The more confusing MS and Sony’s lineups become, the more tempting Switch and Steam ecosystems become. This transition isn’t going to go well for them :/
@@xtr.7662 it’s not as much as you’d think, memory bandwidth is a large reason why last gen we saw barely any games with more than 2x, 4x if you’re lucky, anisotropic filtering. Meanwhile on a PC setting it to 16x is trivial
@jamestonjes8263 im very well aware still consoles have insane memory management one example is the gow ragnarok port very well optimized however you need a 8gb card to run the game with low textures and not crash while on base ps4 you have 6gb of shared ram and vram
I love messing with the in game settings on my steam deck. The freedom to change presets and ups alerts should be a given on all handhelds even the Switch.
Windows based OS on a mobile device will not go well. Windows is too abstract and has too many layers using up unnecessary big amounts of RAM and CPU cycles. this is why all Windows phones went extinct. Their UX was a laggy mess with atrocious battery life and frequent crashes. a closer to the metal UNIX like OS is the better choice for handhelds for better battery life and optimization. Name me at least 1 mobile device today thats Windows based lol.
Question for those who don't think a PS5 is feasible. Is a patch to get it work so bad? I mean how many PS5 games are there, and how many true demanding PS5 games are there? Not too much.
@@QuantumChrist not really, depends on tastes. Switch has a lot of terrible games and most Nintendo games, while good for sure, are overrated. They usually are rated 1 or 2 points more than what they are. Games like Fire Emblem, Princess Peach and the new Zelda game are massively overrated. If the same game were released but by a different dev, they would be 6 or 7 at best. Maybe lower.

Whoever didn't mandate compatibility with their handheld would win the generation entirely. The power difference between Series X and S is already causing developers problems. Having the base spec be a handheld, where the gulf would be *much* bigger, would absolutely cripple the home console.
Whoever mandates compatibility with their handheld would win that generation. They would benefit both from the mobile and the home console market. Possibly outselling the Switch.
looking forward to a unified gaming ecosystem the next gen of gaming is going to be very interesting PCs and consoles might merge in the next coming years..Steams making consoles and xbox and Sony are making handheld PCs this will shift the focus from resolution and hardware back to the games and services I would love for Microsoft to launch their handheld along side a light version of windows for handheld gaming...so you can have it in xbox mode and run everything series s can run all they way back to og xbox...or you can have it in windows lite mode and play your steam ,gog, epic store games .. competetion on all fronts..steam would have to give steam OS to all the other handheld makers Playstation would have to be more open to compete and Nintendo would be in the same gen as xbox and Sony.. now we'll have games dropping on switch 2 ...xbox handheld and the next playstation portable at the same time ..and running on all the handheld PCs..gamers will have choice and companies will have to compete more for us this is also why Nintendo clearly don't want to launch the switch 2 ..theyre not really competing with anyone ..switch is selling and theres no alternative at that price and performance.theyll try and keep the switch going as long as possible ..it wouldnt suprise me if the the playstation and xbox handhelds launch before the switch 2..

They are waiting for technology to get more efficient. I doubt either company wants to make bulky handhelds with subpar battery life.
The series s is not holding back gaming, Xbox One and ps4 are.
What does that sound like. Switch... but a wee bit more advanced
MS should make it a Windows device with a proper Xbox skin but you can switch to desktop like on Steamdeck.
If the next gen needs to have parity with a sku that is around series s, will that not make ps5/series s relevant for the entire generation because can play the handheld version of ps6 games?
No the same way the switch is getting third party support in games like lego horizon while ps4 and xone arent
@xtr.7662 but on going cross gen support for the PS4 would suggest that publishers will stick ps6 games on ps5 often if the ps5 can easily run portable ps6 titles.
It's a massive install base, there is precedent for it, so why wouldn't they?
@@bogstandardash3751 for the first 4 years yes but then for the other 4 only the handheld would be supported
Eh, I didn't help the vita, lol. Playstation now had to fight steam deck, and the rog ally. Market has changed now
As a Nintendo fan, it's been so wonderfully bizarre starting off 2017 with people either confused or mocking the concept of a hybrid console handheld device, and then here.
Dev mode on that thing
Yeah I think that's the route they will go.
To be honest I would prefer another XSS as it is now. I don't really like to play on handhelds or smartphones but XSS was really good deal.
If Sony and Microsoft are aiming for handheld how would they affect Nintendo? Would it force Nintendo to innovate more ?
Nintendo already did innovate with the switch wdym? Ever since the switch we've gotten these clowns ass pc handhelds trying to copy it or follow in it's footsteps.
And no, this will not affect nintendo because they've been king at handhelds for over 30 years Sony tried once and failed
"Console wars" (competition) >>> "Peaceful" monopoly.
Ray tracing needs to go. Period. If the handheld games looked like late ps360 games/early ps4 xbone games. Sharp presentation, no upscaling, NO TAA
I would hate a X-Box handheld. Why isn't X-Box dead yet?
The more confusing MS and Sony’s lineups become, the more tempting Switch and Steam ecosystems become. This transition isn’t going to go well for them :/
I hope not id rather see a next gen series s vs just a handheld.
Isn’t the series s has the performance around a gtx 1650 super?
Probably in that ball park, idk exact numbers... though being basically an APU, would probably be hurt a bit in memory bandwidth department
Yeah it’s a little above the 1650 super in most cases
@@jamestonjes8263it doesnt because consoles have insane memory optimization
@@xtr.7662 it’s not as much as you’d think, memory bandwidth is a large reason why last gen we saw barely any games with more than 2x, 4x if you’re lucky, anisotropic filtering. Meanwhile on a PC setting it to 16x is trivial
@jamestonjes8263 im very well aware still consoles have insane memory management one example is the gow ragnarok port very well optimized however you need a 8gb card to run the game with low textures and not crash while on base ps4 you have 6gb of shared ram and vram
Can Sony scale down a PS5 into a handhold formate?
yes it is because that's the only way for consoles to survive
I love messing with the in game settings on my steam deck. The freedom to change presets and ups alerts should be a given on all handhelds even the Switch.
Windows based OS on a mobile device will not go well. Windows is too abstract and has too many layers using up unnecessary big amounts of RAM and CPU cycles. this is why all Windows phones went extinct. Their UX was a laggy mess with atrocious battery life and frequent crashes. a closer to the metal UNIX like OS is the better choice for handhelds for better battery life and optimization. Name me at least 1 mobile device today thats Windows based lol.
Nintendo will win overall because one their ips work for both console and handheld and they are more popular than ps and xbox ips.
Question for those who don't think a PS5 is feasible. Is a patch to get it work so bad? I mean how many PS5 games are there, and how many true demanding PS5 games are there? Not too much.
I seriously disliked streaming and the idea of it. Then I tried Logitech G Cloud. Now I love it 😂… ur full pc graphics over wifi
Nope Handheld won't be next gen series s it's a optional device
Console war is very necessary it is good for the consumers😅
Next gen console is series s. Who would’ve thought
The future is already here. Low cost handheld like psportal streaming games from clouds.
Cell phone can stream games why would i waste money on something that just use to do it
@zerosam5541 yes, a phone too, but a cheaper device with proper controller would be better.
Streaming will never be the future, unless they can get rid of lag.
@@G360LIVE I have a Steam Deck, running latest AAA games feels more laggy than running it through GeforceNow with 3x times performance
The other way around... Xbox Series S will be the Xbox Handheld.
I hope so because then I'll use xbox again.
I hope xbox makes it better than series s tbh. Almost like a switch
Series S is already better than Switch
@Kyush4 power wise yeah. But functionality nah. Let the xbox handheld be series s powerful or more and copy the switch besides controller
@@Kyush4, on power yes but on Games, Switch is much better
@@QuantumChrist not really, depends on tastes. Switch has a lot of terrible games and most Nintendo games, while good for sure, are overrated. They usually are rated 1 or 2 points more than what they are. Games like Fire Emblem, Princess Peach and the new Zelda game are massively overrated. If the same game were released but by a different dev, they would be 6 or 7 at best. Maybe lower.
@@awesomereviews1561 , Almost all Nintendo exclusives are great, but there's one thing for sure ALL NINTENDO games are NOT WOKE.
If it comes with gamepass preinstalled & allows steam & gog to be installed yes it will do well.
Playstation Portal is a JOKE
I'm thinking they will more likely target something like 480p or 540p and use FSR to get t o 1080p.
If they target 1080p or 720p upscale to 1080p 8 inch to 10 inch size display preferably OLED hopefully with a pixel density of 300*. Windows support isn't a deal breaker but it needs to be Xbox back compatible Not via the cloud either local running the cloud should be in addition not the way it needs to be run. Otherwise it will be dead on arrival
Whoever didn't mandate compatibility with their handheld would win the generation entirely. The power difference between Series X and S is already causing developers problems. Having the base spec be a handheld, where the gulf would be *much* bigger, would absolutely cripple the home console.
They have to take a massive loss on the handheld to get amd to make a power CPU to run xbox series x and ps5 games
Whoever mandates compatibility with their handheld would win that generation. They would benefit both from the mobile and the home console market. Possibly outselling the Switch.
Indiana Jones runs at 60fps and looks fantastic on the S. Lazy developers are the problem.
No
It will be even worse than series s
xbox one will never come out i think
looking forward to a unified gaming ecosystem the next gen of gaming is going to be very interesting
PCs and consoles might merge in the next coming years..Steams making consoles and xbox and Sony are making handheld PCs
this will shift the focus from resolution and hardware back to the games and services
I would love for Microsoft to launch their handheld along side a light version of windows for handheld gaming...so you can have it in xbox mode and run everything series s can run all they way back to og xbox...or you can have it in windows lite mode and play your steam ,gog, epic store games ..
competetion on all fronts..steam would have to give steam OS to all the other handheld makers
Playstation would have to be more open to compete
and Nintendo would be in the same gen as xbox and Sony..
now we'll have games dropping on switch 2 ...xbox handheld and the next playstation portable at the same time ..and running on all the handheld PCs..gamers will have choice and companies will have to compete more for us
this is also why Nintendo clearly don't want to launch the switch 2 ..theyre not really competing with anyone ..switch is selling and theres no alternative at that price and performance.theyll try and keep the switch going as long as possible ..it wouldnt suprise me if the the playstation and xbox handhelds launch before the switch 2..
Xbox will win this war. Gamepass is the key
At this point they should just call it Xbox Series LGBTQ
Nah that's something Sony would do since theyre woke as shit
PLAYS BEST ON PS5 PRO!!!!!! MEGA L FOR THE COCKBOX SERIES X FANQUEERS!!!!!!!! NO MORE SOUL GAMES FOR THE COCKBOX FANQUEERS EITHER!!!!!!!
Cringe
So until now, you had the Xbox One X and then got the Xbox Series X, right? Cause those were the "most powerfull" ones
Get a job bro
@@useless6234ps4 pro was more powerful compared to the cockbox one x. Ps5 destroyed the cockbox series x. The ps5 pro buried the cockbox series x.
