    I love your point about scouting out where you will set up for plein air. Fun fact, Ansel Adams would set his tripod and 8x10 format camera up on top of his station wagon. Then he was be high enough above some vistas to get a great shot ---- exactly to your point. Thanks for another great video.

    Thanks for another interesting video. I'm always on the look out for places to sketch. I keep a list of locations I've noted seem like good prospects and consult the list when I'm ready to go out. I also have a couple "go to" places that have many sketch-able view points... one is a funky neighborhood that's the oldest in the city... with old buildings and interesting shops.

    You mentioned that, at times, artists may spend valuable time locating that "perfect beautiful scene". Country, with or without trees, with rolling hills or flat land, with manicured crops or land overgrown with "weeds" or wildlife scampering about - any place that doesn't have concrete buildings or pavement IS a perfect scene and deserves to be painted. You are so very talented and paint absolutely gorgeous landscapes and "beautiful scenes". Thank you for preserving these places and those moments in time!

    I've just spent at least 10mins researching what 'plein air' painting is. LOL!!!
    Found lots of what you need, how people love it, why we should try it etc., etc., but couldn't find a straight answer. Painting outside!!! LOL!!! Who would guess!!!
    Love, love, love your channel by the way!

    Hi Steve. As a newbie to the world of watercolour I am really enjoying and being inspired by your vlogs and instructional videos. Great information. It's interesting to hear of a seasoned pro going through the learning process of plein air painting for how much to bring, where to go and just enjoying the process of being outside. There is hope for me yet, lol. Thank you again for all your great advice and not being the 'this is the only way to do it', instructor.

    Thanks for another great video. I'm glad you enjoyed your break. Good job on your Plein Air sketches. I'm afraid I don't think I would have the nerve to go out and paint in public. The paintings in Splash 18 were amazing. I am always very critical of my own work and always notice little mistakes, like a shadow in the wrong place, when I have finished painting. But in the end it's just great fun and very relaxing. Take care.

    I tend to do my scouting by taking alternate routes on the way home from work, looking for places with views in different directions (for cloud/sky-watching) and for as you mentioned places you might be ok setting up. That's hard but I guess you might need to summon the courage to ask permission. By taking back roads locally I think I learn a sense of light at times of day too.

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  7 років тому +1

      Yes. Good idea. My discovery this past week is to separate the two activities. I was frustrating myself by scouting on the fly as I went out to paint. Not a good idea. I always end up squeezing my time.

    Hey Steve - just found your channel, thanks for all the instruction. I know it has been two years ... but I can't zoom in enough - who was the artist of the two rowboats that you liked so much - I want to look them up. I really like that style as well. The piece was called Inseparable but I read the name. Thanks!

    So . . . I live in Michigan and the video you showed of the vistas you saw, well they are essentially the same as what I see around where I live. I was out driving around this afternoon thinking I need to consult Steve Mitchell -- he does plein air. So I was gratified to see your video that looked like my drive around the fields. I also drive around and around thinking there's no place to go to sit and paint these things; it feels uncomfortable to pull off the road. But it might be a matter of just getting over it if I want something in particular. But that is a good idea about scouting, because the fields around here are gorgeous this summer, not to metion plentiful, but I keep coming home with nothing. If I go out with scouting as a goal, I might make progress next time. My paintings are nowhere near your quality, but I keep trying. Thanks for sharing!

    So many thoughts after watching. First, welcome back! I'm wondering what that sign above your door says, if you care to indulge? Also, do your hinged gutter guards work? I had a guy out to quote mine, but their brand was cheap. Your plein air work is just gorgeous. It's been years since I painted along the Charles River, so you're getting me to want to get back out there! Question: I know we all recognize the unique qualities of our own work, but after looking at a magazine like Splash, do you ever look at your own work more critically, as though you should up your game? What's your perspective on comparing your work with artists who are significantly "better" than you (and by "better" I just mean comparatively, in your own view)? I used to get Watercolor Artist magazine, but stopped because I found that it would get me to over-critique my own work. Just curious. Anyhow, terrific video and I love the camera work in this one! Great angles and smooth cuts. Well done! Cheers! :)

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  7 років тому +8

      Hey guy! Its my wife's sign...aaargh. It says, "Do you want to speak to the man in charge or the woman who knows what's going on." I don't like the gutter guards. I removed them all. Fact is, a gutter full of leaves still works to an extent. Gutter guards actually catch some leaves on top and clog up too and then your gutters don't work at all. Its like they've been papered over. Total waterfall! True you don't really have to clean your gutters if the guards work but silt still gets through and eventually you will have to clean them then its a pain to remove them all. Thanks on the plein air work. Bit by bit I'm becoming more comfortable with it. As mentioned in the video, I'm relatively new to it. I definitely get more critical of my work when I view top notch stuff. I actually think thats healthy for us professionals. I always want to up my game. Maybe not something I recommend for a leisure time artist so much but I've always said pros have to constantly compare their work to the best. Not purely in the sense of how we stack up but more as a target for moving towards setting our work apart. I think the trick is enjoying ourselves at the level we're at. Some days I'm happy with work I've done, other days I realize how far I have to go. I think enjoying the journey and the knowledge that I CAN continue to improve and discover pushes me and gives me joy. Thanks!

    • @MDCampbell
      @MDCampbell 7 років тому +1

      LOL!! The "sign." I'm actually chuckling, over here! As for the gutter guards, I figured as much. We had a guy come out and pitch this whole spiel and my wife was all "let's go it!" and I was all "I don't think so," as they just looked cheap and problematic. I have two 40' gutters that, for reasons you can imagine, *I'm not cleaning!* I hire people to do it, but they rarely come back the following year. Thanks for the comments about comparing yourself. You put a positive spin on something that can sometimes set me back. I agree that "CAN continue" is the best way to go forward. Cheers, always! :)

    Do you like to have people watching when you paint plein air? I take a mini paint kit on vacation, and there is lots of subject matter, but I found that watchers completely derail my concentration. I'm not sure how to get past that, but hope I do. You are right, the eye takes in so much more!

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  6 років тому

      I don't mind an occasional peer over the shoulder but I don't like too many questions because I have to stop and, as with you, it breaks my concentration. I haven't been too many places yet where its a big problem though. I try to pick out of the way spots where I'm not right in people's path.

    When you take landscape pictures, do you remember to set your Camera on vivid? Because on vivid, you get colors that are more like you see with your eye. If you don't set your Camera to vivid then it will not pick the max amount of color. Now, you want leave the Camera on vivid when taking picture of people, BC it has the tendency to mess up skin color.

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  7 років тому

      I shoot mostly in raw if possible. In post (photoshop and lightroom) I can make it as vivid as I need to. It doesn't matter though. The human eye can still perceive millions more colors than a camera.

      Right Connie! And apparently its a pretty good paper but Cheap Joes does not make any of their own house brands. For example his American Journey paint is made by DaVinci (great paint). He keeps his paper maker super secret. Some have speculated that its made by Fabriano but I've never heard a definitive answer. I guess as long as it works eh?

    Yeah, I agree pet portraits aren't very inspiring, they are a lot like selfies, it's great that a person loves their pets or kids but to the rest of the world they don't mean a damn thing.
    IF however you can make the pet portrait original, like add psychedelic colors or whatever, then it's more than just an exercise in painting or drawing and gains artistic value imo.
