Fangio vs Brabham, 1978

- Here is an extremely memorable piece of footage where 5-time world champion, Juan Manuel Fangio, aged 66, races against Jack Brabham. The 4 lap 'demonstration' was run after the Australian Grand Prix at Sandown in 1978. With Fangio in his W196 Mercedes Benz and Brabham in his Repco Brabham, a car 12 years newer than Fangio's.
An awesome exhibition of great racing cars, pushed to their limit against one another, a special clip. -
When you notice that Fangio won the F1 championship with FOUR different teams, you know it was not the car.
Cristian Martinez all within the debut year. A true master!
It could be - rightfully - argued that he always switched to the strongest time. But that does not take anything away from his achievements.
In those days I don't think that the car make the difference, but only the driver.
@@sonokris9868
Why would you think that? Thanks to the increasingly strict rules cars converged.
@theydontwantit Are you sure they are? Before, there was no technology to help pilots win. Also, in that time you crashed and life ended there. How many pilots died in that time and how many now? The F1 today is a bad joke told by a drunk. You would have to watch the videos that are here on youtube about current drivers and some years ago "trying" to drive older cars. When they realize that they have climbed into a real F1 car and not a "spaceship" where only one button is missing to launch lasers, they get scared and say that it is very difficult. You have no damn idea, son. No damn idea what you say.
As an Englisman I have no qualms about admitting that Fangio was the best racing driver of all time
hermankatnip schumacher
@@dr.strangelove4665 hahaha
@Jack Tangles he won 5 championships in 5 years LMAO
@Jack Tangles was talking about MSC
@Jack Tangles and schumacher has 5 in 5 years
I was there that day, and saw Fangio close up with my own two eyes. Made that a "MAGIC" moment in my life. Never to be forgotten. Certainly in my opinion, the best racing driver ever, in my lifetime.
I was there that day as well. Its a funny thing, when you see someone on television - it's one thing. But meeting that same person, face to face, it becomes a life altering moment. I've met quite a few famous people over the years - Alan Jones, "Weary" Dunlop, Jack Brabham, Denny Hulme & Jim Richards among others - and I always walk away from the meeting a different person.
FANGIO WAS NOT JUST A GREAT racing driver but he also was the best driver of his era - yes, he had success and chanced the best racing car in Formula one 1 and enjoyed celebrity success but, he was at the same time the perfect Ambassador for Formula 1!. He created the excitement Motor Racing fans now tke for granted!. For me Fangio ignoring Ferrari Boss Enzo request ( at the half race refueling) to retire as he was seventh in the race - then "pushing his ability to to the limit he won the race to the amazement of Race leader Hailwood who was astonished by Fangio making a suicidal pass!. Best is a photo of Enzo his boss at the finish begging for forgiveness as World saw the best English drivers beaten with a race that showed how special Formula 1 Motor Racing was!.
there are any video of that story? @@richardlumleysmith2843
@@richardlumleysmith2843 Fangio never raced against motorcycle champion Mike Hailwood, but against Mike Hawthorn.
I was priviliged to see Fangio do a demonstration lap at Laguna Seca. He was in his 80's, driving a Alfa the 151 that he won his first championship in. It was loaned by the Alfa Mueso Storico and the tires were correct but had been sitting for a long time. So he drove several laps to warm them up. Then he drove hard. And this was a sight to see, I was at the tight turn entering the pit straight when the tires lost grip. The car started to spin around, more than once. The not so young Fangio managed the situation. No bumps no bruises to he or the multi-million dollar Alfa. If I hadn't seen it iI wouldn't believe it. The best ever.
I believe it
This makes me feel so old. I was at Sandown that day. Probably too young to really appreciate what I was seeing but the sound stayed with me.
Time rushes by not passes by I feel since i have passed 60
Yeah, that's not a sound you forget if you like cars.
2 of the best F1 quotes ever were said by him..
"Once you are driving the engine turns into music and the driver becomes a maestro"
"I dont wanna know about F1 anymore" (when Senna died)
Mateus Brinati
Fangio
Mateus Brinati Senna use to say Fangio was the best and Fangio used to say Senna was his son and that he was going to break his record of world titles if he hadnt died.
No one said to Fangio about Senna's death. The family did not say anything to him because he was sick
@@ceciliaolivieri5395 that's untrue he was watching the race and said he knew he was dead when his head was twitching so he just turned his tv off. fangio himself said that in 94.
@@TroystonB What I heard is that no one told him. He knew, that something very bad had happened to him but no one said anything
This was in 1978, so Fangio was 66-67 and Brabham 51-52.
Incredible
This video is very, very special indeed. One gets the sense that had the machinery been equal, there would have been no contest - Fangio even at 67 was driving phenomenally.
Brabham was a F1 champ. So no, one doesn't get the sense of that at all.
Brabham did let him by
Jack was a Great Driver! Cheers from Argentina
I love these commentators, they dont freak out at every single thing that happens, unlike the current Sky broadcast that over hypes every single tire changed.
So true. Mark Skaife being the absolute worst.
Fangio says:"The way for winning a race is to drive as slowly as you can to finish first"
James May says: "Way for winning a race is to drive as slowly as you can"
@@TheRomanRuler quién es James may?
That doesn't mean he's driving slowly, because he definitely isn't!
The quote is actually about an early rule in Grand Prix racing, that was still in force during his time; *"To finish first, first you had to finish."*
You had to make it to the chequered flag to be classified. A retirement in those days won't get you classified in the results, even if you covered more distance than the next car that did made it to the finish.
A classic example is the 1953 Italian GP where Alberto Ascari, while leading, spun at the last corner on the last lap. As there were only three cars remaining on the same lap as the leader he should nowadays have collected points for a third place. But since he didn't finish, Luigi Villoresi was the one classified in third, even if he's one lap behind the leaders.
This philosophy was very much shared by John Surtees both were able to retire from highly succesful racing carreers.
Fangio and Brabham the 2 biggest 'talents' in F1 racing. Both men from 'down under' Argentina and Australia
Southerm Hemisphere deuce and Rugby
Wow!! Fangio's accuracy was stunning just clipping every corner apex and at the exact same point, lap after lap. Mind blowing to see him push that priceless classic 196 Mercedes to its limit!! The roar of it's straight 8 engine is spine tingling! Amazing stuff!
"Priceless" to us. For Fangio? A work tool, not unlike a hammer or a saw....
I know right?? That is what racing once used to be about! Plus yeah, that bellowing inline 8 is absolutely monstrous!
Fangio uses to say he doesn't like the aerodinamic version of de Mercedes, because he couldn't see where the fornt wheels are pointing to.
@@DonGato64 Well, it certainly didn't help him in the 1954 British GP. The more substantial body of the streamliner, coupled with the rain on race day didn't help him in trying to find the corner apexes at Silverstone, so he ended up repeatedly hitting the corner markers, which were oil drums filled with concrete.
That is such an interesting race. Mercedes Benz found themselves on the receiving end of Gonzalez's giant-beating performance. It is also the only race where a record of seven drivers all posted identical fastest lap of the race.
@@DonGato64 so fangio was amazing with open wheel cars but struggled a bit with other type of cars?
"I will not do a demonstration drive, I will race him"
"I wasn't invited to a demonstration, I was invited to a race and I came here to race" were his words
no wings and spoilers, the sheer amount of skills to keep these cars on the ground is remarkable. great drivers.
Fangio and Clark are my two favorite F1 drivers ever, and I never got to see them racing while they were around. So, this is a real treat!
+Treetop64 Agree on both. I'd never heard of this extraordinary event; it brought tears to my eyes. Wonderful post!
When this demonstration was held, there had been 27 Formula 1 World Championship seasons (1950-1977) completed. Fangio and Brabham together had won nearly a third of the those seasons - 1951, 1954, 1955, 1956, 1957, 1959, 1960 and 1966.
This video is an incredible piece of history. Two drivers from two different eras, around 10 years apart, race to see who is the fastest. Also I love how when Brabham realised that Juan was not joking around, he just went for it lol. Thought Jaun Manuel Fangio is such an amazing driver, he kept with him enough on the corners, where the Brabham was the best, and then effortlessly passed in the straight where the Brabham wasnt so good. Amazing from both of them
👍👌👏 Simply fantastic! I swear that someone is peeling onions behind me! ;-) Tears of joy of course!
I have tear in the corner of my eye when I see this great people of racing history. Fangio and Brabham together in one track - even just for show, is a big deal. Thx for that video.
I revisit this video every couple of years. Absolutely wonderful.
The first time I saw El Maestro was at the nurburgring in 1957. I was always taken with his " no chickens in this coupe" style. I remember a quote by him in a newspaper interview where he said, " A true champion must always strive to be the best". It took Schumacker some 45 years to equal his record of 5 world driving championships.
Amazing... 1957 was the year when he broke his own lap record in the Maserati 250f repeatedly on the Nurburgring to catch up with Mike Hawthorn's Ferrari who was almost a minute ahead of him then he took the lead and won the race.
That was amazing to see, that Mercedes had some proper speed down the straights, you would think that Brabham in the newer car would have just driven away, but then this is Fangio we're talking about!! Thanks for posting brilliant footage👍
I was there that day and still have the program. What an honour to see those legends out on the track.
There were many great drivers who have competed in the World Driving Championship over the past 70+ years, but even among those outstanding talents there are some that are just better, more complete, more focused, and truly stand to be remembered as the best of the best. Among those giants of the sport, men like Juan Manuel Fangio are at the absolute pinnacle. They were so good that the others were just inspired, and simply had to work harder. When I see these greats doing what they were born to do, it is a truly humbling experience. No one else can do these things, and it's absolutely an inspiration for the rest of us to know that such men lived and showed us the potential of the human spirit in racing form. JMF was called 'Il Maestro' for a reason after all, and I never get tired of watching him show us just why he earned that great title. It's a true pity that there is such little footage of him showing the world his impossibly skillful ways.
UA-cam Fangio and Moss Spa 1956 !!!
This performance by a 66 year old Fangio was pretty great keeping in mind Brabham was 8 years removed from his last F1 Season, Fangio was 20, and his Mercedes was over a decade older than Brabhams car
Now that's RESPECT. Fangio the GREATEST of ALL TIME.
Downloaded this one. I am in awe of seeing Fangio racing later in life. Goosebumps!!!
Fantastic, I really enjoyed that
wow id love to see fangio in a car that was as up to date as the brabahm. he truly was the maestro
Adam Othman imagine how Fangio would do today
Hard to say what would happen ifyou would bring Fangio in his prime to this era. Driving style back then was completely different. But I am sure he could adapt and do some decent lap times.
That Mercedes moves pretty good for being so huge.....and the Maestro makes it look so easy....anyone else would have been lapped in the Mercedes..
That was a special day at Sandown. I was there and took a few photos of both cars and drivers. 35 years.
Why can't i give 10 stars
great video
great cars
legendary drivers
-You need great passion , because everything you do with great pleasure , you do well -
FANGIO .
truly memorable..tears in my eyes, what great drivers, what gentelman, very brave stuff..
no DRS, no KERS, just pure beasts manned by true masters of the art. beautiful. the sound of that Mercedes is out of this world.
FANTASTICOO!! GRACIAS POR ESTE MATERIAL HISTORICO!! SALUDOS DESDE ARGENTINA!! QUE GRANDE EL CHUECO!!!!!
FANTASTIC! THANKS FOR THIS MATERIAL HISTORY! GREETINGS FROM ARGENTINA! Twisty THAT BIG!!
''Eu estava em Reims (1958), treinando para o Grande Prêmio da França, quando senti que o carro estava muito instável, o que me chamou a atenção porque a grande virtude da Maserati 250F era sua estabilidade. Então cheguei ao box e perguntei ao chefe de equipa o que se passava; ele respondeu-me:- Trocamos os amortecedores! - Mas por quê?, perguntei. - Porque estes nos pagam! - Assim, naquele momento, tomei a decisão de encerrar a carreira. E não me arrependo disso!' Fangio
O melhor dos melhores!
That's not the reason behind his retirement.
He was interviewed in the late 1970s, and he said that motor racing is beautiful when one's full of passion and enthusiasm, but if it becomes work, one should stop. And he realized that by 1958, it's becoming a work for him.
We are so fortunate to have this video....priceless.
I feel privileged just to see this.. cant think what those guys actually at the track were feeling
legend fangio!
This video is the reason UA-cam exists, as far as I concerned.
Wow awesome performance by Juan Manuel Fangio, incredibile!
mesmerising how light fangio's hands are, classic footage. what an epic thing the w196 was
1951 in the Alfa Romeo, 54 & 55 with Mercedes, 56 Lancia Ferrari and 57 with Maserati. Il Maestro is still today the only driver to win the F1 title with 4 different manufactures and for me personally the greatest F1 Driver of all time.
JMF true racer won with 4 different manufacturers. That is why all F1 drivers know he's the greatest of all time. Also he was a gentleman when he raced no cheating no poor sportsmanship. Check out his race in 1955 at the Nurbergring where he went up against the new Ferraris in his old Maserati . One of the greatest displays of driving ever recorded.
i was there that day , but i was only about 15 years old and didnt appreciate it as much as I do now .
Absolutely amazing. The fact that fangio is so precise is amazing
this footage is more than gold thans man thanks
Wow,wow, wow! Amazing to see Fangio and Brabham race their world championship winning cars against each other. Impressive stuff. Especially Fangio's attitude - no demonstration drive, I'm here to race. Extreme confidence - not arrogance - in his race craft which was evident to see. Great stuff!
Dan huge fan! Fantastic racer, we needed u in this race!
I'm glad i clicked on this!
2:29 the W196 F1 car had a 2.5 Litre engine. The 3 Litre variant was used in the 300 SLR, as driven by Sterling Moss in the Mille Miglia.
God, that was wonderful! One of the coolest things I've ever seen. Fangio was, and always will be, _The Man._
F1 means Fangio n°1 :-)
Wow I remember watching this on TV like it was yesterday - cool.
Este video es una Joya!!!! , Slds cordiales
Great show Ole' chaps!
I hit the like button 3 times! This is awesome!
What a treat - wish I'd been there. Thanks.
Some of the best footage on youtube this is! Thanks for posting!
Fangio was my grandfather friend no joke
Just amazing!
Thank you for uploading it.
Everyone who has just a drop of petrol in his blood must jump off the couch watchhearing this ... one cannot tell where the Arrow stops and Señor Fangio begins and vice versa .. the Brabham is no less exhilarating in its delicate grace . this has to be the essence of racing in class 🌹:)
Awesome, I'm not a big exactly a fan of F1 but this footage is incredible.
Awesome, thank you so much for posting this 😀
wtf a 1955 f1 car overtaking a 1966 f1 car, only fangio could make it possible, what a fucking legend
1955 car overtaking a 1966 car
wow that's special. i thought i'd seen all the good fangio footage but this was new to me. modern f1 should do a bit more of this like leclerc at the british gp but this was way more intersting. invite legends to do some demo races at a gp weekend.
Not to mention these drivers risked their lives on very dangerous race tracks like the old Spa, Nurburgring and Monza without chicanes.
I remember this like it was yesterday.
Dois malucos geniais Fangio The Best!
They call him Maestro for a reason. He earned that title.
El mejor piloto! UN CAMPEON con todas las letras.

Wow Wow Wow, he's the best driver ever. Juan Manuel Fangio, el maestro :)
Not bad for almost 70 years old man and over 20 years old formula one car. Fangio was the greatest driver! It's not more words.
5 championships with 4 different manufacturers...that is Fangio!
Absolutely superb footage! thanks for posting it.
No seatbelt. He gets out in a second. No earplugs no Hans and practically no helmet. Goggles for wind protection only. Stones in your face at 150 mph. Wow how confident and brave you had to be in those days. He drove faster than other drivers were willing or capable of doing with those incredible visceral machines. Talk about earning your place in History. Schumacher, Hamilton etc have nothing on these guys when it comes to risk. Niki Lauda was a great driver. And today Alonso is showing the way. Yet Fangio will always ring Supreme because of the time and place of his victories.
These cars and drivers are great!
@ayrtonsenna1960 AGREED! THIS VIDEO SENDS SHIVERS DOWN MY SPINE! THE GREAT JUAN MANUEL FANGIO RACING IN COLOR! WOW!!!!! I WISH I COULD SAVE THIS FOREVER!

Yes great racing by two great racer's at Sandown ,had the privileged to see jack Brabham race and win at Silverstone GKN Trophy race Easter weekend 1966 that's if my memory serves me correct,
Truly jealous you got to witness that in person. Modern F1 just isn't the same
Amazing driver
Both very worthy world champions and deserve all the accolades they get. A bit of David and Goliath in machines, the MB is a mechanical engineering masterpiece with all due respect to Sir Jack's racer, his record of being the only champion to win in a car of his own doing will never be broken.
Exacto! Exelente reseña, cheers from Argentina
Cheers to you
That was amazing. Spectacular driving
You wont see anything like Fangio. He was the best driver of all times. Before going to F1 Fangio was racing all over Southamerica and Argentina. It was amazing races like the last few Paris-Dakar celebrated in Argentina when he always used to win and fixed the car by himself every time he got mechanichal failures. The Fangio vs. both Galvez brothers battles (particulary against Oscar Alfredo Galvez, they called "The Harrier") are epics. In fact, the Buenos Aires circuit is called Oscar Galvez
Thx for the EXCELENT vid!!!!
Fangio is the best of all, Jack you are a Legend! Congratulations gentlemen!
thanks for this upload #CLASSIC
That was MAGIC!👍
