*Yeah… playing a man’s sport like football is better. Hockey players try too hard to act tough, yet they have to grab jerseys during fights, and get sensitive when someone even touches their fully padded goalie.* 🤦🤷♂️🤣
@@videosofthemusclegod1910 I’m not trying to be a dick here but we are really over protective about our goalies and star players because without goalies you cant play and without a star player there’s no spark in a team
When crossing over, point your front foot in the direction that you’re going, not forwards, also, push your back foot out to the side and not behind you. This helps you have more power and control the direction you are going much easier.
I can fly around a bit ...grew up quad skating at a roller rink...ive switched to ice skating at 39 yrs old...not great at stopping/transition from forwards to backwards but learning ill get there
tips from a rollerderby player who mainly does quads (the skills still translate either way) if you want longer crossovers push your outside foot further out diagonally and then pick it up to cross it over the other, you can use your weight to push your inside foot out while the other foot is crossing over this will result in much longer crossovers that give your more speed for less energy.
I watched this video and another that had the exact same steps before going to skate and I did it in less than 50 minutes and I'm not too experienced. The trick is to do the crossovers in the middle of the rink and tilt the leading foot in the direction of the turn and you will find yourself slowly starting to speed up in that direction. I incorrectly thought you could only do the crossovers while moving, but i found out you can start from rest. All the best to whoever's trying!
I LOVE THE OUTDOOR RINKS, I WISH WE HAD THEM HERE IN THE UK, THE ONLY TIME YOU MIGHT SEE A SMALL POP-UP RINK IS OVER THE CHRISTMAS PERIOD. WHERE IS THIS RINK PLEASE?
I'm more used to roller skates so when I go ice skating I run faster with the same technique as the roller skates (pushing with my feet diagonally with wide strong steps) ofcourse this is dangerous when I'm trying to turn but..... well no problem😅
I’m pretty sure that this won’t work properly for figure skaters since we have to push underneath the other foot Either that or I can’t do forwards crossovers😂😅
This is good advice for skaters that can't skate their way out of a paper bag. These principals came to me naturally. But a lot of hockey players have no natural talent.
@@rollerbearding Tie the skates a little bit harder will allow you to move deeper with longer strides and less effort giving you more speed. Seems like your feet are moving inside the skate. Tie from lower down on the skate, you may dislike me pointing it out but give it a try. Good drills for beginners though
can someone tell me how can i fix my legs from falling in like bending and how to make them always straight bc i tried so many times but they just fall back
When you lean to the side one of your skate is on the inside edge and the other on the outside edge. Inside edges is when the big toe is closer to the ground and outside edges is when the pinky toe is closer to the ground!
@@helenwalcher5142 Also push in the opposite direction of your turn it hives you more power. So push out hard with both feet while your doing crossovers
Outside edge is harder to learn to use. When using the inside edge, you are leaning towards your other foot. That gives you an easy way to catch yourself if you need to. Very quickly you learn that and so learn to use the inside edge and avoid the outside edge. Then you get good at using the inside edge and nowhere with the outside edge. When using the outside edge you are leaning towards your pinky toe and have no foot over there upon which you can depend. That makes it scary to use the outside edge. Because of all of that, people need to be told to use the outside edge, and to learn to use it, and to work hard at it, and it's harder to get good at it.
In all your examples and steps, you assume that the person you are teaching understands and has the ability to transfer to an outside edge on there under push foot. If you do crossovers properly, there is nothing to crossover, as your push under foot is long since gone by the time you need to move your front foot.
I dont assume anything! I know beginner skaters will not be able to use outside edge right out the gate hence the standstill steps which will help them get their balance on one foot and on the ice.. there are many levels to crossovers.. you can raise your skates and you can also not raise your skates and only use the edges..
@@rollerbearding thanks for your reply. When you do standing, walking crossovers even in your video, your foot rolls to an outside edge before you cross over, it’s natural, it has to happen when you do crossovers, my point was that the emphasis on Crossing Over, when the emphasis should be on the push under. Just my .02c
@@benrussenholtfocusedskatin8245 indeed which is why its a good exercice for someone who wants to learn them.. by doing the standstill crossovers it will progressively make them use the outside edge for that under push you mention! @@TheLarryBrown for better crossovers your skates should be always like this / / if you go right and \\ if you go left. That is the base tip and most useful one. Second of all when you crossing over, fist step to start crossovers is to place the leg, that closer to the turn, near your far leg, that will make your center of gravity vector out of your footprint, and the crossover you make will be effortless and fast. Third tip, crossovers are not always a push, crossovers is a step over, there are no C cuts involved. Fourth, your shoulders and chest should face the center of the turn. So if you doing crossovers on a faceoff circle, your shoulders should face faceoff dot. Fifth - your crossover foot should move up and down with a knee up. Otherwise you will lose time and balance if you make circular motion with your foot, when crossing over. I would say that leaning skate, up down motion with crossing leg, and shoulders to the center are the most important things to do when crossing over.
There is nothing better then coming home from ice skating and playing hockey and watching videos about it
