  • Time to harvest Elephant Garlic in the Pacific NW of USA. Once again I planted way too much garlic, I have more than 150 heads of Elephant Garlic and at least another 450 heads of Softneck/Hardneck to harvest in a couple weeks. Let's dig up some elephant garlic. I'm harvesting at least 1 month earlier than previous years.
garlic, yellowing garlic, yellow leaves #garlic #hardneck #softneck

Love your raised beds! No such thing as too many garlic plants, IMHO 😉

Holy garlic batman. You put mine to shame. I plant last week of October and harvest first week of June. One of the easiest things to grow and great for filling in gaps

I love garlic, it's a good thing my friends do too. :) Since I started saving Bulbils and Corms the amount is ridiculous... but like you said it's so easy to grow. Those extra 150 or so heads I literally just threw them along the fence and tossed dirt/chips on top...I think most of them i'll just leave in the ground (esp if they are small as they should be mostly rounds) instead of digging up and replanting.

I love garlic!! My favorite is a red colored garlic I found at the Farmer's market a few years ago... I saved out a bit and planted it in the late fall and was thrilled to see the greens pop up in the Spring... Unfortunately, I have been traveling ALOT the past few years and my garden hasn't been that great due to not enough attention. But garlic is pretty easy so I guess I don't have much of an excuse... Thanks for sharing ;)

that is awesome...dig up some of those old garlics, I bet you can replant them for harvest. I have some that is purple huged (in my softneck area) can't wait to dig it up!

Can you share how you acquired your initial seed cloves for your elephant garlic? I planted about 15 cloves from grocery store elephant garlic, and only one sprouted. The commercial seeds which I've seen are very expensive.

hi Chris, like you I bought my inital elephant garlic from the grocery. The key is to buy organic (so it's not sprayed with a growth retardant) and it at all possible, one that was grown in your area or at least your grow zone... a LOT of garlic in the USA is flown in from China...that stuff is sprayed to high heaven. The Chinese garlic has it's roots trimmed all the way off. If you can find some organic with some root then it would be better. Commercial Elephant Garlic can be expensive but you only need a few heads to make it work. I've been growing mine for more than a decade and now it's overwhelming!

I’m going to plant garlic for the first time this year. I’ll plant in one of my raised beds. Store bought garlic. How do I know if it’s hard neck or regular garlic? And, I cover my raised beds for the winter. I shouldn’t do that if I plant garlic in there, right? I’m in Michigan, we get lots of snow. Thank you…😀

hi! that's awesome! if you buy from the grocery store make sure its organic, otherwise it is usually sprayed with a growth retardant so it won't sprout (or is slow to sprout)...luckily being in the north allows you to grow softneck or hardneck garlic. There are 2 ways I know of to tell hardneck from softneck...the first is by name and google it, the next is to look at the center of the garlic clove if it has a hard stick like center (the stalk) then it's hardneck, if the center is wimpy or even gone it's softneck. I'll do a shorts vid on it in the next few days so you can see what i'm talking about. I've gotten this question a lot. Finally do mulch it and mulch it really well, a few inches. The garlic will grow up through the mulch when it's time. I know you can do it!
