Hey all! Please note that this will be the last NuWho Episode for this year. NuWho will return in January with Voyage of the Damned! And yes I will be reacting to the upcoming 2024 Christmas special - Joy to the World 🙌
it will be interesting to see (there may not be at all) if there are any little references made in the upcoming special that you can connect to this first RTD era
as a Christmas Special, is there any way you could squeeze 'Voyage Of The Damned' in over the next few days? I can understand if you want a break tho. But it would just fit a bit better to make that your last episode of the year before starting Series 4 proper in January
Only after making David wait something like two days. John hadn't read the script while David was ahead of him, but John didn't want the reveal spoiled. :P
Lucy Saxon in this is very underrated, she’s in two episodes, has like 10 lines of dialogue for the whole thing and goes from power hungry fame hungry girlfriend to completely broken, mentally destroyed, physically abused shell of her former self who ends up killing her husband. The complete empty look on her face for this whole episode and the bruises on her face. Such a grim story for her
I think the fact that Martha's mum couldn't bring herself to shoot him but Lucy could, so coldly, really rings to how badly she's been treated over the last year by the Master
@@obiwankenobi687 yeah, they can’t call attention to it too much for time and age appropriateness reasons but the actress really manages a lot with the tiny amount she’s given
Back when this was new, there was a Harold Saxon website with extra stuff, including some Lucy backstory things. Her name being Lucy Cole, and how she's the daughter of the Lord of Tarminster, she met the Master when he was publishing his autobiography. I'm such a Lucy apologist, she was hypnotised and manipulated and gaslit and abused and tormented, she never deserved what happened to her, and she was manipulated into supporting him. And now she's just been abandoned.
The music you're so fond of is called "This is Gallifrey, Our Childhood, Our Home", and it's one of my favourite bits of music from the entire show (aside from the main theme, obviously). No spoilers, but before you watch Voyage of the Damned you should watch Time Crash, which is similar to Born Again - it's a 5 minute charity special that's optional, but is a ton of fun and well worth experiencing. For reasons.
Such a great season. Martha is the GOAT. Obviously she's capable enough to save the world but then after all that. She can evaluate her own worth and once the jobs been done and shes helped everyone she can. Shes mature enough to walk away and take on board all shes learned to help even more people. She is just absolutely golden and is certainly the best companion. She doesnt need to stand by the doctor marvelling about how wonderful and wise he is.
She is my second favourite companion in New Who after a certain next companion. I do think she is probably the most underrated and capable companion in recent years. Not just what she had to deal with, but a lot of it without the Doctor to help her.
Such superb acting from David Tennant and John Simm in the scene with the Doctor holding the Master begging him to regenerate and the Master refusing. Although I'm sorry Martha left (and wasn't recognized at the time as the wonderful companion she was), I'm glad she left by her own choice and on her own terms.
@@HuntingViolets Yeah, I remember reading a lot of great fanfics back in the day that explored the Jones' complicated relationship with the Doctor, especially because of that death scene with the Master. Yes, in the end, the Doctor saved them all, but the Doctor also seemed to emotionally value the Master's life more than anyone's -- including their badass daughter's. It was like if you're not the Master (or even Rose), the Doctor doesn't care as much about you. Plus, add in the fact that the Master had enslaved (and tortured) the Jones family for a year (while making them wear maid costumes, which had some unfortunate racial/class undertones, on top of all that) and, yeah...just so frustrating.
@@NicoleM_radiantbaby I'm not sure the Doctor in this incarnation cared that much about Rose until she was gone. He was willing to let her go to the other universe till she came back and refused. He abandoned her and Mickey on the spaceship with the clockwork people and was willing to take the slow path with Reinette and just, I don't know, hope he could somehow time getting back with them before they were killed. He didn't seem to worry about it much.
It's subtle, but Lucy has a black eye which suggests the Master was physically abusive towards her (not to mention mentally). For an entire year she lived aboard the Valiant. No way out, nobody to turn to, completely powerless against a man who has total control over the entire planet. The Doctor's philosophy of forgiveness may be admirable, but in a situation like that, well-intentioned words mean nothing. After all the physical and psychological torment she went through, I don't blame her for pulling the trigger.
Martha is definitely a companion that has become more popular over the years - the writers did her dirty through a lot of the season having her pining after The Doctor a little too much, but rewatching years later she became one of my favourite companions - she's smart, confident, and is constantly saving the day, even without The Doctor. I do love her goodbye scene in this episode though, she takes herself away and you root for her doing it, I just wish the 'lovesick puppy' trope wasn't quite as prevalent.
@@Mejoree113 I could never get past it, at least she's not the worst for it though, large parts of s5-s7 are unwatchable thanks to the useless companion whom will not be named yet, but at least we get the best companion next!
I'm still mad how it made a number of fans hate Rose and lying about how often the Doctor talked about her. He mentioned her of his own accord exactly *once* in the entire series, all the way back in the second episode. Every other time it was someone else mentioning her and him responding. I had a bit of a grudge against Martha back in those days because I love Rose as a character, and she was getting crapped on because Martha couldn't get over the fact that he liked someone else before her. I still have moments of rolling my eyes at her, like in "Utopia" when she was getting snippy over the fact that Jack and the Doctor were happy that Rose wasn't DEAD (did she expect them not not care that Rose is alive??), but other than that, she was good.
@@ciaranconlon84 Useless companion? I personally disagree with that take, I definitely think that companion could have left a bit earlier, and there were some questionable writing decisions (but those exist in most seasons of who, just like this one), but unwatchable is a huge stretch imo.
I agree to a point, but on second viewing, I think you see real growth from Human Nature where she had to take the lead and this 3 parter where she saved the world. She was always smart and capable, though, even though pining after the Doctor could be a bit annoying. My 2nd favourite companion after a certain next companion in new Who.
@@cooluncle4242 Oh for sure, there was definite growth for her, and I think I get what they were going for here, but it felt like every episode she was pining over him, and that's a writing issue more than a character or acting one - you are right though that on repeat viewings her character comes off much better.
The Toclafane reveal is an understated detail that in my opinion just worked perfectly with this whole trilogy and really elevated them beyond the average monster. Apart from them being obviously reminiscent of Cybermen and Daleks alike, there's the way the Master effectively became a distorted nightmare version of the Doctor's usual approach; A timelord arrived in the Tardis and saved the entire human race when all hope was lost.
It's been a pleasure watching you react to Dr Who this year. From someone who was a complete newbie checking out the reboot to loving the show and going back to the start of New Who. For someone relatively new to Dr Who, you have great insight into the show. I liked how you realised straight away there must be more to Martha's mission, and the Doctor would not ask her to kill the Master. Have a great break, and I'm looking forward to your return, and of course, you have a new Christmas special to check out with Ncuti Gatwa as well.
That scene with The Doctor holding The Master and begging him to regenerate has made me tear up and cry so many times. It's amazing that despite The Master being such an unempathetic character with basically 0 redeeming qualities yet still have such an emotional death because you understand how much he means to The Doctor. The Doctor wiped out his entire race, an act he feels an immense amount of guilt over and now he finally has a chance to make things right with the only other Time Lord left, his former childhood friend. Because even after all the terrible things The Master has done, there is that sense of kinship between them, that shared understanding that no one else but another Time Lord is capable of having with The Doctor. And it all slips away in his arms as The Master chooses not to regenerate, partly to spite The Doctor and escape what he perceives as being trapped with him, but also partly to free himself from the maddening drums that had haunted him since birth due to the Time Lord's messed up and abusive academic initiation rituals.
The huge difference between the end of season 2 and 3 is underlining hope. After rose, it can take a minute to be ready for the next season. The idea of moving on is hard. Martha’s season is about being ready to move on and we get to finally do that with Martha. We are left with hope for things to come.
I was happy to see you cry at Martha's parting speech. it makes me cry every time. *this* is why we had all those scenes of jealousy during the season - so that this scene can hit us that much harder. Martha remains my favourite companion - she was strong, but she also had a heart and she kept calm and carried on... until she had had enough. and then she left, on her own terms, with her head held high, and knowing that without her, the world would literally not be the same. when I grow up, I want to be Martha!
I've got a tear in my eye, again. Been rewatching Doctor Who with you since you started with Rose. Loved going on this journey with you, an emotional rollercoaster 🥰🥲
David Tennant can really wring every bit of emotion from a scene. Even though I don't tend to like some of the romance stuff with this Doctor, I have to say he can really bring the emotion in episodes like this.
Theres a point i didnt notice on my first viewing but have in other viewings is that Lucy was so broken by the year that never was plus all the mental and physical abuse (you can kinda see a black eye) that she shot the master dead
I'm surprised more people don't pick up on this. I think the actress plays it really well. You can see how dead inside and broken she is, compared to a year earlier.
If you think about it, it makes sense. Consider that after millions of years of coming back to life in a body that has a limit, the body eventually becomes deformed. Jack being the Face of Boe explains how he knew about Yana. But it's also possible that Moffat was using a fan theory about the Face of Boe. It wouldn't be the first time he did it...
I forget exactly by whom but one of the show-runners confirmed-The face of Boe is indeed, the ultimate fate of Jack. After an unfathomable amount of time passed. I’ll also note a an event takes place that offers a credible explanation for how a process begins that might lead to that result happens… many, many episodes from now.
@@patriciahernandez4695 Intended storyline explained below [Spoilers] Jack was supposed to be one of the team at Demon's Run and would have been the one whose head was chopped off by the headless monks instead of the blue guy. Barrowman couldn't make the filming, though (I think he was shooting Arrow at the time), so that step in Jack's evolution was left undefined.
@@patriciahernandez4695 Something which didn't happen because John Barrowman was unavailable: ... (SPOILERS) ... Remember what happens to the fat blue guy in series 6? That was originally written for Jack.
@TheMoonRover oh, I remember him!! But that was in another timeline. So... does it means in this timeline he was Jack?? O.O That would explain what happened to his body... 🤣🤣
Loved it so much!!!! I'm so invested in your reactions lol. It hurt to wait for that face of bo reveal, omg I was so excited for your expressions hahahahah love it
My god this was a good episode. I never really liked the trilogy when out aired, but I have a newfound appreciation for them after watching your reactions!
Both David Tennant and John Barrowman (Jack) are huge DW fans since they were little boys and to be at the show - a dream come true for them. When the script came about the Face of Boe they went completely bonkers. 😅 Barrowman used to tell that he was at the open window when this episode was aired waiting and listening for - quote - “the nations jaw to drop” 😅😅😅 In the scene of the Master dying David literally acted his a..s off, he was breaking your heart to pieces there and he will again - he is on hell of an actor.
Back in New Earth, in series 2, the Face of Boe had sent the Doctor a message to come. He planned to tell him the secret, then, until he saw Rose with him and realized it was too early. When the Doctor came back with *Martha* in Gridlock, he realized it was the right time. The prophecy was that the Face of Boe would tell his last secret to the Doctor because by then, he already knew he would and what he would say.
S3 finale is so fun, i love (tho im sad to see her go) martha's role and exit. She finds her self worth and leaves with such a power move and dignity, one of my favourite companion exits
It all makes sence the face of bo was rumored to be millions years old and said to doctor we will meet again or y are not alone because He knew He would meet the timelord And the jack was with the doctor when they met the second time lord So if jack Is face of bo it all makes sence
The next short clip is a kind of bridge between last episode and the Christmas special and between classic and new who. The series 3 soundtrack is worth a separate reaction. (Other TV series have done this time period passage as well. And a comic based movie series has done this. So there are gaps to put in novels, comics, audios and even game based adventures.)
I love Martha so much. Really hoping the rumors are true about her character coming back in the spin off series they are doing. Martha becoming this badass agent is something I want to see more of.
It was always going to be a hard job to replace Rose , but Martha proved up to it . Great acting by Freema throughout the series , but this was a great send off for her and a different level .John Simm was a suitably deranged Master and we got more about the relationship between the Time Lords . Martha and her family being the only ones to remember explained her decision to leave nicely leaving the Tardis doors ajar slightly for the future . Jack ending his days as the Face of Boe sounds logical if you think about it perhaps . Anyway I enjoyed Ugo summing up . There is a Children in need short he might find interesting before the Christmas special which he's timed to perfection . We should be so lucky .
@@secondroad11 That would be a fun movie reaction. Betcha Ugo never saw the original Buster Keaton SF films that was the basis of so much tacky lunacy (or should I say marsacy…) Ah, memories of rain days packed into the gym turned into a make-shift movie theater so us kiddies could have our recess occupied… Sam Jones & color? The future! (Don’t mind me, I have it on disc…😂)
Something I've only just clicked onto is that the Face of Boe told the Doctor he wasn't alone because remembers the events of these past 3 episodes! This is partly why I love watching reactions, 10+ years later and there's still connections to be made
Love with the titanic scene how they added in 3 distinct bell rings, this was what the lookouts on the titanic did when they saw any object dead ahead, and off course that means they did that when they spotted the ice iceberg. So to those of us who knew, they were suggesting that the tardis was the iceberg (obviously not saying if that theory was right or wrong 🤔)
Oh, my goodness! I would love Martha, Jack, and the Doctor traveling together. Jack could still get back to _Torchwood_ before they even missed him; it's a time machine!
Martha travelled the whole world, founding a religion robust enough to survive its central figure being turned into a small goblin on national TV, and did it without a god-mode upgrade from the time vortex.
@@SunlessNick Yet so many fans back then considered her a 'weaker companion' because of that. SMDH! She was able to get shit done without any supernatural help and I'll always love her for it.
... and the penny drops lol. The best part is, your name for the hand still kinda works. The Doctor lost that hand very soon after he started regenerating, so technically... The Face of Bo had possession of that hand for much longer than the Doctor did, so it effectively was the Hand of Bo lol. Now we know HOW the Face knew that the Doctor was not alone, because he lived thru the events. I'm getting certain Marvel vibes right now, so the last thing I will say is... "...?"
Please tell me you've also seen Time Crash? That David didn't know it at the time he was acting alongside his future father-in-law is mind breaking. Never forget, as you bop along to the Who theme music, that it was composed by an Aussie. :D And yes, finding out the Toclafane are humans was the biggest revelation of this episode. :D :P The ending of this season got a lot of flak, as people seemed to despise the Doctor as "Space Jesus". Maybe it was because the solution was too simple, but it's the sort of thing the show has done since the classic era, maybe just not to this scale. As for the Face of Boe revelation, don't forget he was around in the year 200 100, meaning Jack kept changing and growing for hundreds of thousands of years. Then he lasted until New Earth, in the year 5 000 000 000 which, of course, he how Boe knew there was another Time Lord, as jack remembered everything that happened with the Doctor.
The Face of Bo reveal was so crazy but true and I'm going to say how he became just a head because the story isn't in live action it's still just theory and story because there was a filming conflict they couldn't have him in the episode but almost everyone believes Jack was beheaded by a Headless Monk at the battle of Demons Run but they could of done it off screen and since Jack is immortal just the head lived and he grew over time to became the Face of Bo
Was hoping for the Christmas special to come out on Christmas. Watching Voyage of the damned now. Gotta say it's so educational. Not sure why Britain insists on going to war with Turkey every year 😂
Have a great Christmas. I can't wait for you to get into S4. Voyage of the Damned is a grest Xmas special. I wonder if you'll recognise a certain someone 😉
You mean like how the Face of Boe told his last secret? (Come on, You Are Not Alone; he's supposed to get Professor Yana out of that? Was that helpful?)
The face of boe thing is genius because your ears and nose never stop growing and your body stops producing collagen, resulting in sagging of the skin.
When she spent a few episodes on Torchwood, Jack didn't let a single conversation go by without thanking her - I swear he meant to do it once for every person on Earth.
Now the season is over; I like to believe from this season that the Doctor kept Martha at bay on purpose, maybe seeing her desires (not a hot take, I know), be it quiet tactless & him believing that his somewhat "coldness" he gave her through this season was the only effective way for a companion to leave in a healthy way when time is due; without it ever be too much of that emotional struggle of a painful choice/none-choice clouded by overly-attachment or romantic fascination. Maybe he wants to be able to see a companion leave with less of two broken hearts and all this nastiness of too much co-dependency, & he failed at trying this! Now, a the end of this episode he regrets not having more time with her as companion as a result? Her leaving WAS painful and, unsuccessfully for him, her decision to quit is shaped by those feelings of fascination, because, unlike with Rose, the love and desires went far too much unaddressed. I think there's a BIG failure on the Doctor's part to try and shape it into a strong friendship, talk about where they are at, and build kinship away from romantic feelings. But, you know, he still has a lot to learn like all of us; That's a good thing for a character. Martha here realises she can have what she wants on earth with people that don't keep her at bay. She sort of gotten everything out of this what was possible; saving the world, see the universe, but not the warmth of love OR devoted friendship? Personally (subjective), I don't see or maybe I don't want to see the Doctor as too much of a romantic being and I don't ship them with companions - yes, that does sometimes frustrate me watching some reactors on YT be all in on shipping, but again it's subjective, and the show has many writers and I can imagine they differ in opinions on that as well. I always hope for a deep friendship-kinship to develop with companions instead. I really love Martha and I also like that they showed the Doctor in this season struggle with knowing what he wants from companionship after Rose. EDIT; I want to add that sexuality and romantic feelings can be a messy experience and I'm not clear-cut against the idea of the Doctor being able to feel these things.
To me, who watched these episodes as they aired, the scene with the master choosing to die purely to get a 'victory' on the doctor will never be surprised as peak Dr who
I was never a fan of writers making the doctor into some kind of god figure. I always preferred it when he was just the doctor, travelling around and trying to make a difference.
I thought the Dobby the house elf doctor and floaty diety doctor were kinda lame. Glad you liked it. Maybe just the fx, made me not like it. But then seconds later I’m crying with the doctor when the other last time lord dies. And the Face of Boe? Holy cow that was amazing. Go back and watch the cat nun episodes. And realize this is Jack. The interaction of the Doctor and Master also gives us an inkling of just how powerful Time Lords are. The Doctor plays human but Time Lords are far more powerful. It’s scary what they could do! Scary what he could do but chooses nothing to.
@@happyslapsgiving5421 She did, once he no longer knew, and she no longer needed to concentrate so hard. Yes, her family played a huge part in her decision to leave, but imo, the main reason was realizing there was a human male that she could admire almost as much as the Doctor, and he is even a doctor, and the chemistry between them promised such a wealth of real connection, but as EQUALS. The intelligent choice, yet made with a lot of emotions and oh, so much hope!

As much as the next one has my whole heart, Martha is the one I'd want at my side in an emergency. She is, hands down, the most capable companion.
🥰🥰

Enjoyed your reaction as usual.
FACE OF BO SELECTA ! FINALLY !
If you noticed, when Doc picks up the buoyancy ring he actually looks at the camera for a second.
Oh my god that IS Tom Ellis! I never knew that before!!
Love this story so much. Martha was the best companion.
Hard to choose, but Martha was an awesome companion for sure. She deserved so much more
She's so underrated.
Martha probably was the smartest and most capable companion in new Who.
She had to take the lead on multiple occasions when the Doctor wasn't there.
@@joerosenman3480 I've watched the whole series and now I can't remember what event you're talking about... which Doctor does that happen with?
@@patriciahernandez4695 Intended storyline explained below [Spoilers]
Jack was supposed to be one of the team at Demon's Run and would have been the one whose head was chopped off by the headless monks instead of the blue guy. Barrowman couldn't make the filming, though (I think he was shooting Arrow at the time), so that step in Jack's evolution was left undefined.

@TheMoonRover oh, I remember him!! But that was in another timeline. So... does it means in this timeline he was Jack?? O.O
That would explain what happened to his body... 🤣🤣
Happy Holidays to Ugo , Chat & the Algorithm !
Amazing reaction!! You are such a joy to watch, you enjoy the show in the same way that I do and its so great to see
Loved it so much!!!!
😅 Barrowman used to tell that he was at the open window when this episode was aired waiting and listening for - quote - “the nations jaw to drop” 😅😅😅
In the scene of the Master dying David literally acted his a..s off, he was breaking your heart to pieces there and he will again - he is on hell of an actor.
Great reaction ❤I loved Martha Jones😊Each companion has brought so much to the show. Looking forward to the next 😊
Martha always has been and will be my favorite companion. She's a fighter!
I feel like Martha is an underated companion. I'm glad she got a good exit.
Great video mate I've subscribed going back to the beginning to watch all of ur DW and SJA
🙌
It all makes sence the face of bo was rumored to be millions years old and said to doctor we will meet again or y are not alone because He knew He would meet the timelord And the jack was with the doctor when they met the second time lord So if jack Is face of bo it all makes sence
Bring on series 4! You are in for a treat!
It's funny that Tom Ellis went on to be Lucifer and David Tennant went on to be a demon.
Watch Time Crash befor Voyage of the Damned
It's not really essential, and as a newbie, it won't hit as hard, but it's a fun little minisode
Jack is 100% The Face of Bo Russell T Davies himself confirmed it
This is Gallifrey, a masterpiece that gives chills every time
There is a minisode to watch between this episode and voyage of the damned called ‘Time Crash’ which would be nice to see
It was always going to be a hard job to replace Rose , but Martha proved up to it .
The woman pulling the Master's ring out of the fire is an homage to the end of Flash Gordon(1980) with Ming The Mercilous.
Something I've only just clicked onto is that the Face of Boe told the Doctor he wasn't alone because remembers the events of these past 3 episodes! This is partly why I love watching reactions, 10+ years later and there's still connections to be made
nearly 20!
Ended season 3 just in time to watch the Christmas special. What a timing.
And now you can continue Torchwood and see how Jack changed bc of this year
Love with the titanic scene how they added in 3 distinct bell rings, this was what the lookouts on the titanic did when they saw any object dead ahead, and off course that means they did that when they spotted the ice
iceberg. So to those of us who knew, they were suggesting that the tardis was the iceberg (obviously not saying if that theory was right or wrong 🤔)
SO EXCITED!!!!
Oh, my goodness! I would love Martha, Jack, and the Doctor traveling together. Jack could still get back to _Torchwood_ before they even missed him; it's a time machine!
Nah, Martha. You are the legend. "The Legend of Martha Jones." You're a star.
Martha travelled the whole world, founding a religion robust enough to survive its central figure being turned into a small goblin on national TV, and did it without a god-mode upgrade from the time vortex.
I always thought this way ❤❤❤
@@SunlessNick Yet so many fans back then considered her a 'weaker companion' because of that. SMDH!
She was able to get shit done without any supernatural help and I'll always love her for it.
love your reactions mate - keep em coming
... and the penny drops lol. "...?"
next season is my favourite companion, yeyy 😍😍
Martha is the GOAT ❤
One of the things I love most about this episode is everything the Master says is a easter egg of something in future episodes
Great reaction.
First time I've found your channel and I have to say I loved the reaction.
Do you mind if I ask what part of the world you hail from?

Next, you should watch the Children in Need special, "Time Crash".
Martha ❤
Jack being Boe does make sense, how did Boe know about Yana at all?
Because he remembers being Jack.
You mean like how the Face of Boe told his last secret? (Come on, You Are Not Alone; he's supposed to get Professor Yana out of that? Was that helpful?)
The face of boe thing is genius because your ears and nose never stop growing and your body stops producing collagen, resulting in sagging of the skin.
they never truly answer it
the CGI baby goblin doctor
I would have liked Martha to stay and be treated better. If only the Titanic had gone through before she left!
When she spent a few episodes on Torchwood, Jack didn't let a single conversation go by without thanking her - I swear he meant to do it once for every person on Earth.
Story of John Barrowman learning about who the character is in a script reading is amusing to hear.
It's true!
Now u can see the comparison between Martha and ruby
Now the season is over;
I like to believe from this season that the Doctor kept Martha at bay on purpose, maybe seeing her desires (not a hot take, I know), be it quiet tactless & him believing that his somewhat "coldness" he gave her through this season was the only effective way for a companion to leave in a healthy way when time is due; without it ever be too much of that emotional struggle of a painful choice/none-choice clouded by overly-attachment or romantic fascination.
RIP US President 😂
in my mind jack and the face of boe conspired to pull the best prank of all time on the doctor
the next partner.... the best
A Time Crash?
Martha jones MY GOAT 🐐🐐🐐🔥🔥🔥
Will you be reacting to “Time Crash”?
I like the book full of Martha a advertures during the year that never was
Love her ending. She got to say I'm out . Leave on her terms
To me, who watched these episodes as they aired, the scene with the master choosing to die purely to get a 'victory' on the doctor will never be surprised as peak Dr who
RTD beginning the trend of making the Doctor into Space Jesus
I was never a fan of writers making the doctor into some kind of god figure. I always preferred it when he was just the doctor, travelling around and trying to make a difference.
17:22 uhh what did you want her to do?
I still don't understand why Martha didn't try to get together with Tom.
Do we care? 😂
