I bought one of these a few years ago. Initially, I liked it as it seemed to have a bit more speed than my mk 55 but definitely more noise and not quite as smooth running at highest setting. It did save power at slower speeds but at highest setting, it was comparable to the 55. It's much lighter than the 55 and that was a pro for me but after the novelty wore off, I decided to go back to my 55. I have to mention that the 55 has a 100 amp pwm controller that I installed that works better than the haswing. Otherwise,the haswing is better than the trolling motors with the click speed switch but the variable speed pwm controller that I installed is better imo.
Thanks for the video. I was about to buy this motor but after watching this videos and others, I have changed my mind. Lots of power, but the noise is a killer for me. I fish shallow saltwater flats so I need a very quiet motor. Again thanks, I appreciate the honesty.
I am not suprised at the speed, right in line with what i thought. Its no faster than the newport despite being more thrust. As i as no surprise there. I am VERY curious as to battery draw compared to the other 3 motors you test. We already KNOW its not worth it for speed increase.. The question is if the battery drain is less, there for making it the better choice. Since we dont have the ability to refuel outside of doubling our battery weight.. the real choice comes down to which setup will get us through a full day of hard use. I would love to see you test going smaller.. Say a watersnake 2 and the 18. A lot of hobie guys swear by the watersnake 18 and thats on a big ole PA kayak. Also would love to see you retest the mk 30 wit ha 3 blade prop. I am starting to think the awesome hull of the ss127 while great for paddling has a low max theoretical hull speed. I am pushing higher speeds than you with a mk 30 2 blade prop on a cheap boss 12. Right in line with the speeds i got from the mk 30 when i tested it on a DIY hull. 4.5 mph on both.
Next up will be the range test for this motor and hopefully a 3-blade prop on the Minn Kota 30lb. I would like to get my hands on the Watersnake motor. I think it runs a higher RPM and uses a 3-blade but I won't know until I have one in hand.
I have some experience whit this motor and a 35 lb and 45 lb brushed on a 17" Linder (aluminium canoe), in my opinion if you use the 35 or 45 mostly on the higher setting you're probably gaining range with this Protruar. I gained a lot whit a canoe that usually displaces more than 550lb. But on lighter craft a small 2 bladed brushed trolling motor whit pwm (stepless speed controller) wil probably do just as fine. A lightweight lithium battery is most likely a better option aka bang for your buck, les weigh more usable power and more usages. Don't get me wrong I love my Protuar and gladly take the noise gain over a brushed motor, but it woud not be my first choice for a kayak. For the number's I can get c.a. 3.5Mh whit a 12 to 15Amp draw whit 3 adults a dog lunch and equipment on board. A 100Ah battery is basically good for a day of cruising for a smal family.
I wonder if the speed not being able to go low enough is because of the tiller handle, I know people that have pulled the potentiometer out of the head and just relocated that to a small throttle enclosure and they said it can be dialed down to where it's barely turning.

I've had mine (65lb brushless Haswing protuar) on my kayak for a little over 3 years now, and it's still going strong. I did shorten the shaft on mine and moved the control head of it up just to the right of my seat just to be able to control the speed a little easier, especially since I don't use it to stear because I have the trolling motor where a rudder normally would be and steer the kayak with the foot pegs. I do like it and haven't had a single problem with it. However, next time, I'll probably go with trolling motor thats a bow mount remote control setup.
Love the video. I currently have a 55# NV on my kayak powered by a 60ah Lifepo4 battery and want to switch to the Haswing. Was the stepless/brushless motor a big improvement in energy efficiency?
It is lighter than the 55lb NV. I haven't compared efficiency yet. The only thing I don't like on the Hawswing is it goes too fast on the slow speeds when you try to troll.
@@g-wolfoutdoors8150 that's not good. I was hoping the stepless meant that I had full control from barely moving to full speed. I tend to troll at around 1.5 to 2.5 mph. If it can pull that off I'm happy.
@@nickdowe4887 it will handle those speeds. I just like a slower speed for working closer to the bottom. So I end up turning it off a bunch. The NV 55lb with the PWM has been my go to. It is heavier but I can slow crawl it.
Question PLEASE HELP ME!! Where did you get that transom mount of yours??? That is one heck of a SOLID mount!! I have searched for quite a while, and cannot locate such a great unit!!
I talked to a guy that has one on a 13.5 kayak that fishes coastal waters off the north east coast that loves his. He's tried minn kota, Haswing, seamax and going by what he said he loves both the Haswing and the seamax because the brushless motor draws way less on the battery. Hes had trolling motors on bow,stern, and gunwale. Likes the stern mounted ones the best for some reason. Hes has the Haswing on one and the seamax on the other currently. Its lasted him a couple years so far with no problems. He talked me into getting one. On the way now.

i have this and i fish salt bay shallow flats and 2 years now no issues and its quite
Speed seems about right for the SS127. Thing with Kayaks is they are displacement hulls, so the more they sink into the water the slower they go.
And when you add 275lbs for just the person (for me anyway) it slows down quite a bit.

No issues at all! Works great with a Walmart 29DC battery and even better with the Rebel 12V 100aH lithium.

Dude, what the hell? Didn't even kow 65 lb thrust was possible with only a 12v.
Neither did I. It is also brushless. Next I will need to measure current draw and see how many laps around the lake it will do at full speed.
There are at least 2 12Volt brushless trolling motor's whit 110 lb one is the protruar 3.0 12v the other a Rino brand.
Jarvis walker Watersnake make a 70lb brushless @ 12v that draws 50amps max current

I made it out of a 1/2" HDPE cutting board. Just cut it down and screwed it together with stainless steel screws.
It seems this thing has a built in pwm. There are no steps
As far as I know you can't get a pwm and a brushless motor to play nice together. It must be some other less efficient tech.

The use of brushless or brushed motors has nothing to with the direct drive design. Both types can be used in DD desgins.

Seems to be holding up ok. I haven't had much time with it over the past few months so I can't compare to the reliability of a Minn Kota.
