I love that this is more intimate because they slowed it down. I like the stripped down jazzy, bluesy, sultry, sexy sound of it. (And they all look the part!😊) I especially appreciate that even though DeeJay‘s voice could easily be mistaken for Michael Jackson’s, they did not slavishly copy the song. They rearranged it to feature his voice but make it their own. Those delicious harmonies! ❤ I love Geoff’s bassline, Eli’s gorgeous clear tones and the fact that we got to hear Layne sing with Cesar (One of my favorite parts. ) And DeeJay gets a couple of chances to riff for a while. It reminds me of those sweet Motown sounds that I grew up with. This is definitely going to be one of my favorites. They recorded this in a different studio and I’m pretty sure that the mics all belong to the studio. Since they pre-record, sometimes they will choose a mic just for visual aesthetics, but may have also chosen them for the voice they work with best.
DeeJay and Cesar, brothers in SASS! So many great surprises in this one. Could anyone make bass fit into MJ's music better than Voiceplay? Fantastic, I love it more and more each time I hear it. Between this and Geoff's newest release of "Imagine," my ears are so very, very happy! 💙
They really put up jazzy, groovy lounge-like vibes to the song. And it feels like a reminder: "Hey, we still can do it this way!" with a more serious and 'typically acapella' style after the last "more effectful" or theatrical/comedic songs. When you love music and creativity, you have to love Voiceplay. 🥰
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Geoff's arrangement of this that allows DeeJay to truly shine. DeeJay pulls off being himself with huge MJ flavor and those effortless high notes that just float up into the ether. The tight jazz chords and vocals rich a capella throughout most of it is genius arranging! Eli's solo gives slightly heavier rock vibes while staying in the same tenor space with a richer timbre than DeeJay's light contratenor feel. Cesar is producing many of the 7ths and such that make certain jazz chords so rich and satisfying. I kinda wish he had a bigger moment to step out of the mix too and let his voice offer another flavor, but he's doing such a phenomenal job of being in the middle structure of the chords that unless you have a trained ear, picking his part out is nearly impossible...and that is the point! The BLEND is SO damn perfect! When it builds toward the end and Layne's percussion comes in it pairs so perfectly with Geoff's bass guitar riff. I love that Layne actually is singing such a beautiful baritone before the piece builds to where he comes in with the percussion and Cesar drops to the baritone. Each one of them is delivering their own brand of flirtatious sass throughout this performance and it is SOOO damn sexy! Like another fan said in reaction to this, "It's so smooth it's criminal." I could not agree more! Oh, and I gotta say KUDOS too to the sound engineer! Yeah, he's working with perfection anyway, but the mix is incredible!
Ed Boyer has a special ear from mixing a cappella music, or perhaps choir-like music. Like you said, when it's mixed really well and everything is blended together at the right balance, it's hard to pick out specific parts.
Geoff's bass is always remarkable. A wonderful platform for DeeJay's incredible voice. The whole thing is smooth and sexy. So cool. People don't often comment on the mixing, which they always get exactly right. They record their voices in their home stuidios and they do have different mics I believe. If anyone is flirting it's Cesar, with the admiring looks he keeps giving Geoff. :)
Thanks for your comment! As someone who produces and mixes cover songs, I find it easier to grasp onto the engineering mechanics that goes into their mixes 😊
You like acapella, so you should check out The Bass Gang. They were formed during the pandemic, done remotely by the four members who are from the US, Czechia and Egypt. I don't believe they've acutally all four performed together as yet, so most of their videos are green screen. My favourite of theirs is If I Had a Heart. That was apparently 200 vocal tracks whittled down to 150 for the video. But I also like their Hooked on a Feeling with Tim Foust. It was done as a Valentine day release and Foust is dressed like Star Lord from Guardians of the Galaxy (the song was featured in that series). Also, while not acapella, I think you'd really like Forestella. They are amazing. My favourites there are Bad Romance, Time in a Bottle and Nella Fantasia. Their collective range (4 of them) is from basso profondo to countertenor.
I don't know what VoicePlay is up to - everything they are doing is amazing - just getting better and better.

You make a great point regarding DeeJay's voice in this one! They really did figure out a way to make him stand out from the original melody.

😂 That they are brothers in the SASS category 👌
Is VoicePlay flirting with you? I’d say they were flirting with the whole world! They gave this such a jazzy slow groove - very sexy.
Haha, very true!

Deejay must have been the ONLY choice for this song! He's awesome. Geoff did an interesting arrangement here. Love the set as well 😉. 🌹🕊
It doesn't seems that way right?! Yes, the set was very well decorated!
Smooth as melted butter! Really enjoyed your reaction to this one!! ❤
I'm glad 😊 They did the song justice!
Super smooth. Love the cover. Thanks for the reaction
Happy you enjoyed 😊👍
Just reminding us they're masters of harmony ❤ As if we needed reminding! 😅😅😅❤❤❤
Haha, right?! This arrangement particularly demonstrated a lot of that!
Deejay...🔥🔥🔥 in this cover!
Agreed 👍🎶
Geoff's arrangement is so smooth, so sweet, and so sexy!!!
Haha, yes! Very bass ❤️
The term for notes attacking eachother is called dissonance. Great reaction!
Haha, that's right! Thank you for clarifying. I've heard the term and know what it means, it just wasn't coming to me while reacting 😅
They could not have done it any better
The truth!
Oh and I agree DeeJay is the only one to do this one!!!
Haha, definitely!
