I actually prefer the recorded version of ‘Why’ … but that is because I’m greedy and want to hear Annie’s voice layered as much as possible. She always manages to raise the hair on the back of my neck.
Honestly, same. This was the song that really first wowed me with Annie's voice, and while I agree that her later solo material, like "Walking on Broken Glass" and "Why" are more complex, I would recommend starting with "Here Comes The Rain Again" if for nothing else than to enjoy the progression from the 80s Eurythmics sound before diving into her more evolved solo work or even later Eurythmics reunion work.
The reason it worked so well is that she DIDN' try to do "the Freddie Mercury part". She did a very Annie Lennox part in a duo that was an artful collab. David's style and voice had also evolved a lot since the original Freddie/David duet. After all, there's eleven years between the versions... Both versions are outstanding :)
In fact if you want food comparisons, Angel would be a lemon sundae, Rain would be a vast empty buffet, Why would be the steam on tea in winter and Little Bird would be a Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster. Also, they will kill the notion that she's a low voice. That lady has RANGE.
For Annie Lennox must-reacts, I suggest "No More I Love Yous" and "Walking on Broken Glass." Both show great range of voice and styles, but also some fun acting skill.
I've recommended NO MORE as well. To me, that showcases her voice at its most versatile. Possibly because it was a cover, she either followed their original melodics or was inspired to expand upon them.
Eurythmics and Aretha Franklin - Sisters are doin' it for themselves, Eurythmics- There must be an Angel (Playing with my Heart), You have placed a chill in my heart, Thorn in my side, Miracle of Love. Annie Lennox - Walking on Broken Glass, Why, Little Bird
Aretha's gotta be top of the list. Aw nah, strike that, Aretha's at the top of every list. But a voice like Annie Lennox's, going up against ARETHA and the both of them just cutting loose in sheer joy? We're still feeling that one all these years on.
Yeah, on behalf of my Scottish ancestory; I agree. And this cold ❤'ed, but cool Norwegian have to say; Soul, music isn't bound by geography, it's in our 💕.
During covid when we were all stuck in our homes & I wound up unemployed as well with no idea how I was going to cope. I found that Annie (who I’ve loved since Sweet Dreams hit the airwaves) was reaching out from her living room via Facebook. She would play her piano and sing something she just felt like singing and sharing with whoever wanted to tune in. It was impromptu, unscripted, delightful and just right. I loved these little up lifting sessions, and yes she has a wonderful Scottish accent. I’m so glad you’ve fallen in love with her too. I want to say that you and other re-actors have taught me so much about the music I love. I know nothing about singing, music, either composing or playing it. But through your expertise I have learned how truly special these musicians are. I mean yeah, talented, but so much more than music to dance to, songs to sing along with and lyrics that reach inside and touch you. I never knew that singing and playing the drums were a super power! That was just Phil Collins! Keep doing what you’re doing, you are also very talented and I enjoy sharing your explorations and enlightening analysis of music I no longer take for granted. 😊
Annie Lennox and Hozier doing a mashup of ‘I Put a Spell on You’ and ‘Take Me to Church’ at the 2015 Grammys is must watch!!! You get a great sense of her as an amazing performer!! And Taylor Swift’s reaction from the crowd is ‘chef’s kiss’!!!!
Annie and Aretha such magic, "Sisters are doin' it for themselves" fabulous pair of powerful vocalists and "There Must be an Angel" which I think showcases her register in a big way as she sings all the vocals including high backing vocals that descend to a deep note, amazing range. I had the good fortune of seeing her and Dave as Eurythmics live and she sings live just like the albums. Not that many artists sing so well live in a big theatre setting packed full of people. They started with "Would I lie to you" and they had great backing vocalists. Everyone was on their feet right from the get go. Still one of my favourite concerts. There she was, head to toe in black leather, wowsers.
It's funny. When I first heard that in the nineties, my first thought was "did this really need to be covered?". It felt so superfluous. However, over the decades it's become a favourite.
Here's a live version that is the type Elizabeth loves, where it really shows a lot of close-ups of her vocalization. ua-cam.com/video/8k2775SUBgw/v-deo.htmlsi=M8Dc4Gctt3zm965K
Her voice is magnificent on that, but, to my recollection, the backing track ruined it for me! Unless I'm remembering incorrectly, is there a live version, or something, with a less tinkly twee backing track?
So many divine performances from Annie Lenox! Walking on Broken Glass, Why, Who's That Girl, No More I Love You's, When Tomorrow Comes, Here Comes the Rain Again, 17 Again, Don't Ask me Why, There Must be an Angel, Little Bird, Angel, Would I Lie to You?
This song lends itself to very good versions. I agree that John Fogerty's is my favorite. That arrangement and the guitar solo are genius. I also like Samantha Fish's version.
The song "Into The West" she did for The Lord Of The Rings: Return Of the King is probably my favorite Annie Lenox song. It also has an great but very sad story behind it, not just a song created for a movie.
Paulo Nutini is another of our Scottish national treasures when it comes to songwriters/musicians with epic, soulful voices. Iron Sky live from Abbey Road is legendary.
Definetely Annie Lennox and Bowie singing "Under Pressure" at Feddie Mercury Tribute Concert, when she crushed Bowie. It's just one of my all time Annie classics
Its my sectet favorite of hers because its where I fell in love with her voice. The movie had an epic soundtrack all around. I bought it on cassette and used to put it on to fall asleep to. 😂
You're a lucky woman! You get to see and listen for the first time to all the Annie Lennox songs that I have listened to during the last 40 years. She's truly amazing!
Annie is amazing. There is a vid of her performing Under Pressure with Bowie that always blows my mind. Even if you don't analyze it for your channel, I would suggest watching for your enjoyment
I was in college in the 80s when the Eurythmics came. I feel so absolutely lucky that Annie Lennox has been in the landscape of my life. Love her! Love how you love her too. ❤❤❤ Another great song is "Here Comes the Rain Again" ❤❤❤❤
There is a live performance of "WHY", when all Annie Lennox is doing, her voice, the lyrics, her emotion, her face, everything is 100% PURE ART and the message is so so powerfull! You'll cry and you'll not know what is more impresive in this performance...(Video clip taken from, 25 Years of #1 Hits: Arista's 25th Anniversary (2000)
One of my favorite songs to press play and sing along with at top volume while driving down the highway is “Would I Lie to You?” It’s one of the best “kiss my a**, I’m leaving”songs ever recorded.
All Annie Lennox’s performances, live, recorded or music videos, are INCREDIBLE! Watching anything from Annie is a treat, she’s awesome, always has been, always will be! Her performance for Stings birthday is wonderful. Love from Annie, in Cornwall, UK🙂🌸
Fully agree! Angel seems the most obvious next song for Elizabeth really! After that I certainly can see for example "Why", "Walking on broken glass" or the more old-school "Here comes the rain again" showing up.
Annie Lennox singing the old Cole Porter standard "Every Time We Say Goodbye" is mesmerizing. I highly recommend it. Also, this cover she did when she was 60! Amazing.
The rendition of the song with Hozier at the Grammys is everything ! If you think this performance is good, the Grammys one is ten times better at least ! An absolute must-watch !
As she has aged her voice has only enriched her - wish I could hear her anew again like you - amazing react video. Love Annie to bits, Power, resonance and diction - plus so much passion from a lived experience. :
Definitely consider her album of Christmas songs if you need some holiday stuff later in the year. I love, love, looooove her medieval-ish take on "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen"
Been a fan of Annie's voice since I was in my early teens, over 40 years, I think she's one of, if not the the best female vocalists of the last 50 years, such a vocal range
Not only is she a fantastic vocal artist, but her work to raise awareness around HIV/AIDS is important and inspiring. She is a Global UNAIDS Ambassador. I think she is one of the most beautiful, talented, and caring souls on earth. What a gift she is.
I just love Annie's voice. She has always been so solid, vocally. "No More I Love Yous", please! Also "Into the West" (the live Oscars performance) would be great to watch you analyze! Actually, scratch that. They cut it short in the Oscars apparently. Do the album version instead (Return of the King soundtrack). Her vocals bring me to tears every time I hear that song.
Are you telling us that you have not listened to Anne Lennox singing "Into the West" fot the closing credits for LOTR Return of the King? She won the Oscar for that song. If not, you need to listen. Perfect musical ending to the trilogy. (As is Pippen singing the closing credits for the 3rd Hobbit movie)
Eurythmics’ “There Must Be an Angel” and her solo “Walking on Broken Glass” would give you a taste of her head voice, as some parts of both are higher than anything in this song or Sweet Dreams.
I remember taking walks with my walkman in the 90th and listening to her album Diva over and over again, each song hitting the sweet spot in different time. I came back to it few months ago and it aged so beautifully, it still gave me goosebumps and doze of energy. The video for Why is stuck in my mind. Once Annie gets under someone's skin, she stays there❤
When Elizabeth hears something she likes for the first time, she reminds me of a kid eating mint chocolate chip ice cream for the first time. It's a beautiful thing to see. 😊
Annie has a lovely voice. Her "Into the West" from the 3rd LOTR film is a masterpiece. Just so much more than one heard from the Eurythmics. This was so much fun!
Never heard this song from her before, but after the first line, It took about a second to realize; this is about to be one of my new favorites! Thanks for profiling it! Outstanding! 💯 1/3 of the way through - chills, this never happens. 😮 Made it to the end! Forever changed! I think I have to put her right there just below, by a hair's width, Linda Ronstadt. Powerful performance ❤! Loved it!
A few years ago, Annie shared an E-Mail on social media, that she had received from a radio stations talent scout. Who wanted to help her make an impression and become famous. Her caption was: „You think I got a chance?“ 🤣😂
I would also recommend the song "Into The West" from the Lord of the Rings. She sang the end theme song for the trilogy. There wasn't a dry eye in the movie theatre after hearing that.
It’s amazing the variety of musical sounds that came from Annie in her Eurythmics era. I ❤ the Be Yourself Tonight album for its amazing range from bluesy rock, to soul to smooth electronic/jazzy to angelic Melodie’s. Try doings from that and almost ANY songs from her solo work, esp. her Whiter Shade of Pale cover.
Best live gig ever..... Birmingham NEC eurythmics... She sat on the edge of the stage and sang some of her hits with just dave Stewart on acoustic guitar... Anyone who can sing live just as good as a recording..... Just brilliant
My top three recommendations are 1) the original video for Why, 2) Queen, David Bowie & Annie singing Under Pressure, and 3) Into the West from the soundtrack of LOTR: The Return of the King. There are some live recordings, but I adore the perfection of the studio on that gorgeous, emotional song.
"Walking on Broken Glass" and "Love Song for a Vampire" are two of my personal faves. the second one was done for the 90's Dracula Movie with Gary Oldman. It's GORGEOUS. Also "Pavement Cracks" from the album, Bare is excellent.
If you don’t hear a little Janis Joplin in that ending. You can hear Lennox’s entire insides in the word “mine”. She’s a machine. Evolution in action. She did an album “Nostalgia”. It has wonderful music. You ask how come she sounds like a soul singer on this material, you’ll be intrigued, just believe. The song “Mood Indigo” is a good one. ✌️
When I hurt and mourn, when there is something inside telling me that something must change, when the world has simply become too much, I find myself often listening to "Why" from Annie Lennox.
I just melt when Annie sings. Such expression, such a rich timbre to her voice. The first time I heard "waiting in vain" I had to liusten to it 10 times. It just blew me away. Elizabeth, overdose on Annie, it will do you no harm, in fact it will lift your spirit and make you want to sing her songs. Annie is definitely one-of-a-kind.
Annie is my favorite singer. You MUST cover "There Must Be an Angel" from Eurythmics (it's got an angel singing operatically in it!). From her solo career, "Dark Road" is beautiful and soulful and not acknowledged nearly enough.
Annie Lennox is in a league of her own. She's got pipes that go on forever. Thank you! BTW, you are the GOAT of vocal analysis! Always a fun learning experience.
Annie Lennox singing "Why" live, at the Clive Davis show, in 2000 is everything you need to see and hear. Trust me.
Wait. Why, or Why?
@TheCharismaticVoice it's listed as "Why" but technically it is a question 🤣
I actually prefer the recorded version of ‘Why’ … but that is because I’m greedy and want to hear Annie’s voice layered as much as possible. She always manages to raise the hair on the back of my neck.
I second this. One of the most stunning live performances I've seen
Yes this is a must, do the studio version offline, this live version is the one to react to, brings tears to my eyes everytime
“Here Comes The Rain Again”: That song changed my life.
Yeah, the depth and timbre in her singing in this is great.
Great, great song!
Either "Here comes the rain again" or "There must be an angel" either of those are mind altering.
Best song from Annie Lennox is Love Song for a Vampire. Please listen to this Song and of course...make a video😊❤
She also sang with David Bowie live doing Under Pressure. Although no one can do Freddie's voice her performance was outstanding.
OOOOO. I have to look this up!
This is the one I was going to recommend. Great performance!
I was literally coming here to say the same thing!
“Where did she get that dress?” Bowie could equally have asked “How well did she work that dress?”
“Walking on Broken Glass” is such a fun Annie song with great vocals…I’d love to hear your reaction to it!!
Totally agree, plus it is such a contrast to this.
Reminds me of every club I went to 1996-2006.
That and Why played pretty much every time.
I was gonna suggest this one.
Would I Lie to You
And No More I Love Yous.
It's an absolute piece of art.
yessss the live version
Next Annie Lennox song? I'm voting for "Why" ...So moving and amazing.
I love the official video of Why.
She did a great version at Arista's 25th anniversary: Annie Lennox Why Live 2000. You can feel that she wrote the song for a very personel reason
Both are great but that live version indeed.
Annie is the Queen of 1,000 Voices. There Must Be an Angel, Here Comes the Rain Again, Why?, Little Bird... just pick any song and get blown away.
Little Bird 🐦🐦🐦
She's simply SPECTACULAR with whatever she does. ❤
"Into the West" - Just so tender and powerful. Definitely a goose-bump inducer.
I want that (Into The West) amongst other songs, including Dust In TheWind, played at my wake/memorial. Dies Irae at my funeral, of course.
Yes!!!
Yes oh yes! Such a beautiful place and space she conjures up , tears and tears , for me …. For all! Annie Lenox is a delux talent !
"Isn't she Scottish?" HEY! We have soul too! 🤣🤣🤣
Cue the Thor gif 😆
Definitely! And funk . The Average White Band.
Yeah, on behalf of my Scottish ancestory; I agree. And this cold ❤'ed, but cool Norwegian have to say; Soul, music isn't bound by geography, it's in our 💕.
Paolo Nutini another gift
The Scots pop in and soul out.

Only problem with that I think is that UA-cam doesn't carry it. I agree, though - talk about goose bumps!
What this sounds fantastic
Eurythmics - "Would I Lie to You?" 🎷🎸🎺
I'll second that! That's one I love to crank up!
Yes, please!
I third it
Totally agree on this one as well! Annie Lennox's huskiest voice yet! Real power here... Give this a LISTEN!!!
It’s my absolute favourite.
Annie and Aretha such magic, "Sisters are doin' it for themselves" fabulous pair of powerful vocalists and "There Must be an Angel" which I think showcases her register in a big way as she sings all the vocals including high backing vocals that descend to a deep note, amazing range. Annie is a gift. Love her so much.
She truly is.
Her voice has aged like a fine wine... Annie Lennox is an amazing talent and humanitarian ❤❤❤Thanks for the video Elizabeth
Her cover of "Whiter Shade Of Pale" will blow your mind..🖤
It's funny. When I first heard that in the nineties, my first thought was "did this really need to be covered?". It felt so superfluous. However, over the decades it's become a favourite.
Here's a live version that is the type Elizabeth loves, where it really shows a lot of close-ups of her vocalization.

Yes! This one as well! Lennox does this song proud...
Creedence Clearwater Revival's version of this song is my favorite. John Fogerty's voice and emotion suits the lyrics perfectly.
I was going to say the same!
This is nice but Fogerty's is much better.
This song lends itself to very good versions. I agree that John Fogerty's is my favorite. That arrangement and the guitar solo are genius. I also like Samantha Fish's version.
CCR & John Fogerty's version is the ONLY one I listen to. gotta say BYE to this one.
After hearing Angelina Jordan's version, everything else pales... I still love the other versions that I've always loved ... but... Wow!
The song "Into The West" she did for The Lord Of The Rings: Return Of the King is probably my favorite Annie Lenox song. It also has an great but very sad story behind it, not just a song created for a movie.
I never knew the story and just looked it up!
Paulo Nutini is another of our Scottish national treasures when it comes to songwriters/musicians with epic, soulful voices. Iron Sky live from Abbey Road is legendary.
So many great songs! Here are a few that I love: "Why", "Thin Line Between Love and Hate", "Would I Lie To You" and "A Thousand Beautiful Things"
Definetely Annie Lennox and Bowie singing "Under Pressure" at Feddie Mercury Tribute Concert, when she crushed Bowie. It's just one of my all time Annie classics
Crushes him? I thought they complimented each other perfectly.
You really need to hear Love Song For A Vampire, one of the best songs ever written for a movie soundtrack. I still listen to it today
Absolutely this. It's on my regular rotation and just a gorgeous song
Grammy Awards 2024, Annie singing Nothing Compares 2 U. So amazingly emotional! ❤️
I'm so glad you're delving into Annie Lennox. One of the best voices that ages like wine.
I was in college in the 80s when the Eurythmics came. I feel so absolutely lucky that Annie Lennox has been in the landscape of my life. Love her! Love how you love her too. ❤❤❤ Another great song is "Here Comes the Rain Again" ❤❤❤❤
Elizabeth, it doesn't matter what song you do by her next, they are all great. She is honestly in the running for best female voice of all time.
EVERYTHING! Anything you want, she's amazing. 'No more I love yous' or 'Why' are my preference.
I have gotten more than one speeding ticket by doing that! LOL
Couldn’t agree more! Whenever I need a good pick-me-up, or mental cleansing I just get in the car and crank it up!
Ps: her stage presence is MASSIVE, so much charisma, it oozes from every pore & every hair on her head!
Her album Bare is amazing. "Honestly" is a great single to start with.👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👋👋
I'd recommend "Missionary Man".
One of my favorites!
"Why" off of the 'DIVA' album is PERFECTION
this!
Annie Lennox singing the close to The Return Of The King; awesome voice!!
In terms of Annie Lennox showing off her range, 'No More "I Love You's"' always gives me goosebumps.
Ms Lennox is a stunning performer and vocalist, one of my favorites for sure. No one sounds like her 🖤
Elizabeth,
If you’re looking for Annie Lennox suggestions:
“THERE MUST BE AN ANGEL”
is a song I’m surprised you haven’t listened to yet.
Regards,
Paul
It is a great example of her range. Unfortunally, live performances of this nearly ruined her voice and she needed medical treatment.
And it features an opera component! Elizabeth would love it.
When Elizabeth went "OH, she went up soo high" in this song I thought "Annie's not halfway to Angels yet".
If there's a good live version available from when she was younger (just for contrast) it would be the ideal choice I think.
Fully agree! Angel seems the most obvious next song for Elizabeth really!
After that I certainly can see for example "Why", "Walking on broken glass" or the more old-school "Here comes the rain again" showing up.
Love Annie Lennox! So much power and yet so much control. She kicks ass !!
Annie Lennox singing the old Cole Porter standard "Every Time We Say Goodbye" is mesmerizing. I highly recommend it. Also, this cover she did when she was 60! Amazing.
"Would I Lie to You?" is a great showcase of her voice as well.
Annie could sing the phone book and make it soulful. Another vote for "Why"
Annie Lennox is a treasure. She can do things with her voice the will to *things* to our souls ...
This is whatcha call blue-eyed soul. Annie is so phenomenal!
She sings “Into the West” from the movie “Return of the King”. I love it so much I want it played at my memorial service.
Truly, when it comes to the ladies of pop and rock, no one touches Anne (Wilson) and Annie (Lennox).
Been a fan of Annie's voice since I was in my early teens, over 40 years, I think she's one of, if not the the best female vocalists of the last 50 years, such a vocal range
With the holidays coming up you could listen to Annie Lennox performing God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen. It's a staple in our Christmas playlist.
Perfect musical ending to the trilogy. (As is Pippen singing the closing credits for the 3rd Hobbit movie)
She got quite soulful even during her Eurythmics days. "Missionary Man" is a good example.
My favorite Annie Lennox is the Eurhythmics "Would I Lie to You?". She is just spectacular, no matter what she does!
"There must be an Angel" when she was in the Eurythmics shows her incredible range.
Thanks Elizabeth. You’re making me realise just how many choices go into making a vocal performance. And Annie’s such a master of them all.
The whole Nostalgia album is just amazing. My mom and I watched all the videos as they came out. I highly recommend listening to all of them
Eurythmics’ “There Must Be an Angel” and her solo “Walking on Broken Glass” would give you a taste of her head voice, as some parts of both are higher than anything in this song or Sweet Dreams.
Annie is a treasure that we are fortunate to enjoy with our time lines intersecting with hers.
If you ever react to more Annie, you would love Eurythmics' "Here Comes The Rain Again"
I remember taking walks with my walkman in the 90th and listening to her album Diva over and over again, each song hitting the sweet spot in different time. I came back to it few months ago and it aged so beautifully, it still gave me goosebumps and doze of energy. The video for Why is stuck in my mind. When Elizabeth hears something she likes for the first time, she reminds me of a kid eating mint chocolate chip ice cream for the first time. It's a beautiful thing to see. 😊
Whenever is starts to rain, I always hear Annie Lennox in my head singing ’Here comes the rain again…’

Elizabeth... 'Why' and 'Little Bird' are songs I can listen to over and over both for very different reasons. You'll love her even more!
A few years ago, Annie shared an E-Mail on social media, that she had received from a radio stations talent scout. Who wanted to help her make an impression and become famous.
Her caption was: „You think I got a chance?“
🤣😂
I would also recommend the song "Into The West" from the Lord of the Rings. She sang the end theme song for the trilogy. There wasn't a dry eye in the movie theatre after hearing that.
Her debut solo album was not titled 'Diva' for no reason - every song on it is gold.
Love this cover... digging deeper into Annie, her live version of "Why" is just brilliant...
Aniie is one of my favourite female vocalists. Her album "Diva" is stunning
If you line Annie Lennox, I highly recommend her song "Walking on broken glass" You will love it!!!
And a great music video.
Annie Lennox and David Bowie at the Freddie Mercury tribute concert. Both the rehearsal and live performance.
Elizabeth! Eurythmics "Love is a Stranger" official video is required watching ❤
Iconic
I'd also suggest her singing "Love Song for a Vampire". It was in the closing credits of "Bram Stoker's Dracula" for a reason.
The absolutey marvellous Annie and the equally awesome Dave Stewart. Wonderful. Thank you 👍👍
As an add on , have you listened to Beth Hart? Probably you have, but do you find a similarity? Or is it just me?👍👍
My top three recommendations are 1) the original video for Why, 2) Queen, David Bowie & Annie singing Under Pressure, and 3) Into the West from the soundtrack of LOTR: The Return of the King.
That entire cd is just….. :chefs kiss:
I just melt when Annie sings. Such expression, such a rich timbre to her voice. The first time I heard "waiting in vain" I had to liusten to it 10 times. It just blew me away. Elizabeth, overdose on Annie, it will do you no harm, in fact it will lift your spirit and make you want to sing her songs. Annie is definitely one-of-a-kind.
Annie's voice still melts me! ❤
Annie is my favorite singer. You MUST cover "There Must Be an Angel" from Eurythmics (it's got an angel singing operatically in it!). From her solo career, "Dark Road" is beautiful and soulful and not acknowledged nearly enough.
Annie Lennox was the one voice during the 80's that was so impressive.....as was Alyson Moyet, who was totally underrated in my opinion.....
Annie Lennox is in a league of her own. She's got pipes that go on forever. Thank you! BTW, you are the GOAT of vocal analysis! Always a fun learning experience.
Many Rivers To Cross live performance is AMAZING!
You should listen to "Would I lie to you"
Phenominal combination of rock and soul.
Please do!
Annie Lennox/Eurythmics You Have Place a Chill in My Heart Live, insanely good!
Annie Lennox is a wonderful musical obsession 🌞💕
Have you sampled "Must Be Talking to an Angel"... I digress.... she has soooo many sides, all gorgeous !
"Love is a Stranger" is another wildly different facette of her voice.
Annie, born in Aberdeen, Scotland, in the hospital I worked in before I retired. Amazing voice.
‘Who’s that girl’ from early Eurythmics: amazing vocals
One of my absolute faves.
“No More I Love Yous” is a great example of Annie’s full vocal range. And a fun video.
