Oh wow! I am so sorry that people treated you this way. That is a very good question that you have. My husband and I are believers in Jesus and we just purchased a home in the Ajijic area, maybe to live just for the winter or maybe permanently once our youngest daughter graduates from high school. We are Americans from Colorado.
First of all, I am so sorry to hear you were treated that way. Second of all, your question is a really good one. I have never thought about it before. I have called myself an expat as that is the way all the magazines and videos on UA-cam have called people that move from the US and Canada to Mexico. So I have used this term as that is what I have heard used without ever really thinking about it.
I have really enjoyed your content and your heart for our Lord. 😊

I did wonder also about your shirt! That is just anti Christian and it’s more than rude!! Those people need to get a life; I usually would say they need an Eternal Life but that is up to God to give them and their openness to receive it! I can see calling myself a migrant as in a traveler to live or visit in some other country; at some point I might want to refer to myself as a retiree from the USA. I guess immigrant would be ok too. I am legally in whichever country I go to so people can call me what they want ❤

Shalom. It really is a shame. I mentioned in another comment that i am a man in his 40s from California and my father was born in a town in Jalisco. He came to the US in the 60s. I acquired my Mexican citizenship a few years ago with the thought of moving back, to his surprise. LOL
From your channel and a few others I have been learning about lots of Americans and Canadians moving to Mexico and I did have a concern for the very reasons that you are communicating to us right now.
It is kind of interesting that many Americans and Canadians love our country, our food, i.e. our culture in general, and don't forget our women. LOL but when it comes to respecting I don't know so much.
Love your shirt man. HalleluYah amd praise Yahshua. I'm rocking my tassels right now and am in the middle of Unleavened Bread week. A few people ask me what they are for and i happily share.
    Shalom,
    Manny

I don't really think it matters. Expat is a shortened form of the word "expatriate", which refers to someone who lives or works in a country other than their own. Expats may live temporarily or permanently away from their home country, and may do so for work reasons, such as finding more lucrative employment, or to renounce their citizenship of one country in favor of another. Retiring abroad has become an increasingly popular option.

Thanks Brian, I think the point here is for people migrating to other countries be it, Hispanics to the US and Canada or visa versa that they would be referred to then equally. Migrant many times has been used in a derogatory manner, so either everyone is a migrant or everyone is an expat. It does matter to many Mexicans living in the US and well as for Mexicans that live next to foreigners in their own country.
I really appreciate your input. Cheers

I am a gringo güero from Texas and I will never call myself an expat. I consider an expat an expatriate an ex Patriot! Someone who once put their country first and for some reason or reasons they changed and left their country looking for something better. True I want something more comfortable for the time being but I am and always will be an American first! ❤ I truly feel some expats are traitors to their original countries but many at the same time want to change the country they visit to more suit themselves and be like the country they abandoned 😮 Rude is what they were before leaving their country and rude they will remain everywhere they go 😢

Although to me it doesn't really matter what they call themselves, I perceive that there are some Mexicans that take offense to the term expat because immigrants to the U.S are called just that; immigrants. Personally I don't see an issue with either term as long as both sides of the immigrants/expats are respectful, courteous and willing to assimilate to the culture they go to.

I am also thinking in moving to Chapala, San Antonio area but my question to you is what is cheaper to buy a house already built or is it cheaper to buy a lot and build on it? My funds are very limited and can't afford anything more than $200k but I don't mind a fixer or a something with some potential. Thanks and God Bless!

Hey brother. You can find homes for around 200k. They might be small since prices in San Antonio have been going up. You can also find a property and build for that same amount of money be it further away from Ajijic. It really comes to choice and what style of life you want to have. I choose to be away from Ajijic because it’s to crowded for my liking. I prefer to go and visit there than to live there.

    Long comment:
My wife and I are from CA and just left Ajijic after spending a little over 1 week in the area. We are also believers in Yahshua and following our fathers commandments.
We are in Tepatitlan right now with my wife's family for 2 weeks but have planned to return to Chapala in hopes of making a life for ourselves. We are Mexican Americans but really seem more like "expats" or gringos in my opinion especially me with my level of spainish speaking.
I know what you are trying to explain about the vibe in Chapala area. It seems like American "expats" in the area are not very friendly with one another and constantly competing and quarreling. It seems pretty tense even on Facebook groups
It's a shame because we went to Vietnam to teach English and the vibe was much different. Westerners were very friendly with one another and vietnamese locals also.
In ajijic I would say buenas tardes to expats and get no response more than half the time. On the other hand all the mexican community was very welcoming. Idk what's up but now we are considering trying to make a life here in Tepa.
This being said we still met very nice expats in Chapala area but not exactly how I was expecting to be recieved.

@@yeshuaismyredeemer By definition, someone who comes to live legally & permanently in another country.
Personally, I am opposed to tribalism. I believe it's a very slippery slope to head down. I am also opposed to classism. I have travelled fairly extensively over the years. To numerous countries throughout the world. People are pretty much the same the world over. Every place I have travelled to I have found people with both admirable qualities and not so admirable qualities. I suspect the actual motivation of those who either call themselves "expats", or are called many other things by locals, are as varied as they are numerous. For myself personally, it's important to have a positive impact in the world.
All that being said, I have, on numerous occasions had complete strangers approach me in a attempt to record me in an interview on a video (3 times by news channels). I will generally say "no thank you". If someone becomes pushy, I don't feel compelled to discuss my personal reasons as to why.
A bit about myself. For no other reason than to provide assurances that I am not speaking in hypothetical dialogue.
There are roughly 45,000 inhabitants living in 17 villages in Togo, Africa, that, but were it not for my efforts, would not have potable drinking water in their villages. Would it be nice to have those funds in my bank account? Yes, but not at the cost of the villagers not having potable water.
I have been the single largest financial contributor to a large private no-kill animal shelter (which also offers free outreach for spay and neuter clinics in the Yucatan), for the last several years.
There are 5 middle school children in Cozumel, MX, that I have purchased laptops for in the last year (they would not be able to afford them otherwise).
And lastly, during the pandemic lockdown, I helped financially support 4 lower income families I am friends with in Cozumel (including medical bills).
Not everyone is fortunate enough to be able to assist those less fortunate, to this degree. However, I do believe that positive change comes one small deed, or action, at a time.

It really seems to be a big deal with Mexicans though, how these traveling Americans call themselves. ‘Expat’ is someone who intends to return back to their home country at some future undefined point in time, whereas ‘immigrants’ see themselves permanent- raising a family, dying and being buried in their new country. There is zero meaning as to some ‘social class’ aspect. Consult the Webster’s dictionary or Roget’s Thesaurus for perhaps a better explanation than I am giving.

The foreigners that arrive in Mexico are a blessing to many people financially, but also a reminder that some people believe them selves to more then them. At least in Ajijic. You can see it in the way they talk to people. The same day I took the video, they was a older woman buying ice cream there at the plaza, the store attendant told the lady 28 pesos for what the ice cream, the older lady was what?
