    Well remeber everyones taste is different. That being said to me they are mild flavored. They are good but to me nothing to write home about. A friend of mine loves them. I give him most of what I find ! Many people like them prepared with scrambled eggs I suggest you try them that way first. I have made a video on cooking stump, or honey fungus on youtube already !

      I still call them stumpy's, cowsmouth, and shrimps. I just pick them and eat them ! I don't worry about all that nonsense. Thank you I am glad you enjoyed the video. I hope you learned something from it. Watch my other mushroom videos.

    Giving it a good tap before picking is also a good way to spread spores

    you wash different mushrooms differently hen of the woods can get extremely dirty and difficult to clean. You have to cut it in pieces and remove the dirt in the center of the meat.

    FINALLY! I found a Mushroom VID that I actually started to learn something with (after 3 or 4 others VID's). The others were just like watching them forage/collect. But you point out differences, what a 1st-time education for me! Wifey & I will be looking for a reference guide for native species to Colorado. Thank you very kindly for your presentation Sir!

    Most mushrooms aren't parasites. Most species are saprophytes that live off of dead plant material. The other type is mycorrhiza symbionts which work together with the plant. Their mycelium attach to the plants roots allowing for it to collect water and in return the plant or tree gives it certain nutrients. Some of them are specific to certain plant species as you have stated with mushrooms like hen of the woods preferring oaks. I'm still a bit nervous about picking and eatng mushrooms so videos like this are nice. Thank you.

    • @horizanadventures
      @horizanadventures  7 років тому +3

      Don't be nervous about eating hen of the woods and other easy identifiable mushrooms. The ones I cover in these series are not easily mistaken for something else ! Also sorry I am not trying to criticize you. I appreciate your comments, but you are over reading into things. Maybe I am sloppy in my terminology, but in my mind a parasite is something feeding alive. Some fungus attack living trees eventually killing the tree

    • @horizanadventures
      @horizanadventures  7 років тому +1

      No I don't, sorry because these mushrooms are calcified as toxic. Do your home work and before you ingest some for that reason. I deal mostly with mushrooms that are considered medicinal and nutritional. I would say don't eat them, but your choices are your own. Others have question me this. Every mushroom that enters your body, it react differently ! Do you know someone who is elect to something ? The same could be true. I half a friend who cannot eat hen of the woods / miatake. Which millions of people eat ! He gets nausea and green diarrhea and nausea, go figure. Every body's reacts different to different things. Be carful with what you do. Above all study.

    I use honey mushrooms from my front yard (site of a maple tree that had to be cut down) as an introduction to foraging for any who are curious about it. They make a truly great spaghettis sauce when paired with Roma's from the garden AND there are usually pounds and pounds of them ... so I don't mind sharing. :-)

There are thousands of species of mushrooms in America alone, most of which are uncharted. So good luck hunting. If I can be of any further help. Feel free to contact me !

    Thank you for the video. I saw these (inky blacks) mushrooms growing in my apartment complex. Wondered and studied and finally picked and tested and ate. They were fantastic! The fascinating part was that they did almost turn to ink... thick and dark in a bowl that I left just to see what would happen. Now I hunt Manes, Morel's, puffball's and hen of the woods. Please keep the video's coming and if I get some good video's, I hope to contrbute.

    I guess chicken of the woods and Hen of the woods are different mushrooms right? or the same?

    • @horizanadventures
      @horizanadventures  6 років тому +1

      No they are different.The hen of the woods is called that, because like a grouse it is camouflaged. To the untrained eye is difficult to see at a distance. It grows at the base of old oak trees or stumps. Which were you concentrate your efforts. The so called chicken of the woods or sulfur shelf is so named.Because some say taste like chicken. I do not agree to me it taste slightly salty and seems to absorb what ever its cooked in.If it is cooked in onion and butter It taste like onion and butter salted. As far as its appearance. It is extremely different. It is called sulfur shelf or chicken of the woods. Because its color is that of sulfur. Bright yellow or orange and grows in layers hence shelf. Normally it is bright orange on the top and bright yellow on the bottom. It is a poly pore mushroom like the hen of the woods and has holes on the bottom instead of gills.I hope this has helped you. If not text me further and I will try to give more explanation.

      +Outdoors West Virginia Your welcome, thanks for the good comment. Mushrooms grow in all 52, but different ones grow in different states you'll have to study and get out there and hunt em to find out what grows in your area. I live in southern Michigan. As far as I know the hen of the woods does not grow in northern Mich. I have never seen them up there ! I believe they grow in WV look in power line cuttings and especially in logged over areas where there was a lot of oak cut 3 to 5 years ealier.

    • @horizanadventures
      @horizanadventures  6 років тому

      No Many I pick from experience and some handed down, but that's a good idea. Get at least one field guide to help you. A company called field& forest products has several, or you can even go to the library and use one.

    • @horizanadventures
      @horizanadventures  8 років тому +1

      +joseph hagood Not to my knowledge, but you have to identify its a shaggy mane. Before you start picking shaggy buttons. Because remember there are some poisonous white ones. Pay attention to the shagginess on the cap. The poisonous white ones the caps are smooth. Also the shag's caps are elongated like a closed umbrella !

    Can shrooms be eaten fresh

    • @horizanadventures
      @horizanadventures  10 років тому

      I went say yes and I wont say no. I personally never eat wild mushrooms raw and I don't recommend doing it. I eat the store bought mushrooms raw. the little white button ones which are in the agcricus family. But you have to remember they are grown in a controlled environment. wild mushrooms on the other hand, are exposed to all kinds of bacteria in the woods and fields where they grow. Also wild mushrooms have many different properties, enzymes, and minerals. you don't know what kind of effect they might have on you ! You have to try and remember they are people that can eat certain kinds of poison mushrooms and it does not harm them. On the other hand I have a friend who can't eat hen of the woods which is very popular and is extremely good for your body. He gets diarrhea and indigestion.

    • @robdon79
      @robdon79 10 років тому +1

      Raw mushrooms such as button mushroom contain slightly toxic alkaloids which can cause a to ache. Cooking the mushrooms neutralize the alkaloid. I always cook my mushrooms.

    • @horizanadventures
      @horizanadventures  10 років тому

      Robert Donald Its not the alkaloids I am worried about. its the bacteria and enzymes.

    • @Loozpatienz
      @Loozpatienz 9 років тому

      Marley Robles The mushroom cellular walls contain Chitin, which is difficult for humans to digest. Applying heat helps break down the chitin and allow nutrients to be accessed. Raw mushrooms have little accessible nutritional value and increased risk of contamination by bacteria or molds, etc. Cook your shrooms!

    • @horizanadventures
      @horizanadventures  9 років тому

      Loozpatienz Yes thank I couldn't agree with you more. Stay away from white until you get lots of experience, and stay away from raw !
