I looked this house up on UA-cam for my Art Appreciation class! I had no clue it was so close to me! I just might take a road trip one day! Woooooow! ❤❤❤
So glad you have discovered this gem. It is an absolutely incredible place to visit, I hope you are able to someday. Please let us know if you can and what you think of seeing it in person! And thanks for watching!!
Of all the wonderful homes and other structures designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, Fallingwater is my favorite. I could imagine living there as a full-time resident and not just a weekend home. So relaxing to be in that natural setting.
What a blessing for Edgar Jr and his partner Paul to leave this residence to the Conservancy with so much of it in original condition and still filled with their artwork and furnishings. So many of these world treasures have been lost to time.
YES! A tremendously generous gesture. We're lucky there is such a wonderful team of dedicated individuals who are keeping preserved this wonder of the world.
if I had grown up as a child in that house, WHAT an adventure it would be to explore the forest and the stream area under and around the house...as well as the house itself! What a glorious home, one of the most unique and special in all the world. FLW changed the face of architecture forever!
Well I didn't grow up in that house but I grew up in that area. Just up the road from this house is Ohiopyle state park and Wright's other house, Kentuck Knob. I was really lucky to grow up there. The Laurel Highlands overall is a gorgeous area full of waterfalls, forests, hiking trails, mountains, and rolling farmland.
My Great-grandfather was an engineer and he and my grandpa built a house overlooking (but not IN, lol) a creek about 25 miles south of Fallingwater. Not a millionaire's mansion but a very solid house surrounded by many acres of forest. The terrain is just like this. We spent many summers there and it was heaven for a young kid. Giant rocks, moss, waterfalls.... Sadly, the place got away from the family. I would love to have retired there. Muddy Creek near Swallow Falls.
Frank Lloyd Wright was not much of a structural engineer and some of his original designs actually had to be scaled back for engineering and safety reasons. That long outside porch it cost several million dollars to replace all of the post tension concrete cable on it. Falling water is a beautiful work of art and that's how it should be preserved. I would not want to be the owner of this place and have to handle all the maintenance costs. This building while a work of art they would never build something like this again. The heating costs for this building or astronomical. Plus this is a very high maintenance property that requires round-the-clock care. I would love to spend the night here though 😊
Absolutely love this house. Had the pleasure of visiting it in July 2023. Pictures and video don't do it justice. It really is an incredible work of art.
Kitchen is plain because Wright believed kitchen spaces to be for working. Similar to that of an office or any area where a person may want a clear mind to focus and create. Great tour!! Thank you for this
This house is so fantastic and unique for sure. I love it. I live in east Texas…since 1983 close to a town that in the 1930’s had more millionaires per capita then any other town in Texas at the time because of the east Texas oil boom. I noticed a house on the left as we were coming into Kilgore. I thought to myself that the house looked so much, to me, like something that Frank Lloyd Wright must have designed. At one time I noticed it was for sale so I called the realtor. I asked if it was a Frank Lloyd Wright designed house. The realtor had to do some quick research but told me that the house had actually been designed by one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s pupils in the 1930’s. Someone did buy the house…the asking price at the time was just under a million dollars. I wish I could have seen the interior. I have several books about Wright’s designs, including Falling Waters, that I bought at a library sale. Thank you so much for posting this video. Such an amazing house. Nancy Curtis…deep in the pine tree forests of oil rich east Texas.
You must have a wonderful eye for architecture to notice FLW influence in the wild! Haha. We're spoiled here in Western PA with 3 local FLW buildings and even a few more from his pupils. I hope you get to visit Fallingwater someday, and if/when you do, add Kentuck Knob to the itinerary as it's only a few miles away. Thanks for watching Nancy!!!
Like most people I suppose, I've appreciated Falling Water based on the limited images and descriptions found in books and magazines, all of which seem to show the same few angles of the house and property. This tour has exceeded all of those and in every way. This was so well done, such an intimate, casual, and fun look around I almost feel as if I had been there myself. Thank you both, you've served Falling Water well. I believe, if I'm not mistaken, that Falling Water herself was having a good time of it.
This is so wonderful to hear. Thank you for sharing these kind words. This episode was definitely a labor of love, and I'm very pleased it connected with you in that way.
Thanks for this awesome history. I have this building on my whatsapp profile for many months until i saw this video. Not realizing the awesome history oand design by the owners. I luv it so much..
I was reading a book about this and thought I really have to visit and imagined what it must be like. Then this video popped up. I wish they had shown the upstairs.
Awesome tour. I'm from Wisconsin and have toured Taliesin and it was pretty much everything i wanted it to be. No matter where you looked something caught your eye, it was almost manic, but calming at the same time because everything fit so well with what was around it. Falling water is definitely a bucket list destination (along with the civil war museum and 100 other cool things Pennsylvania has to offer).
what a beautiful place its simple and full of life , one of the most beautiful project of frank Lloyd's work ,, he always inspiring me since i was kid . The guide personality matches with the place

I love that place. I did not want to leave once I was there and toured it. And I’d like to go back again. I didn’t see the pool down underneath the stairs because I was part of the public and we weren’t allowed to go down there but I did see the pool up on the hill which was pretty neat, springfed swimming pool on the hill for guests and or staff.
We were bummed too! Haha. Definitely worth a trip out to see them though. Personally, I've (me, Dave the producer) have been there several times and done the full tour of the whole house and the guest house. Thanks for watching, and let us know if you end up seeing it someday!
I have a dream 1 or 2 times a year for so long now. It's this house and i live in it but it overhangs a roaring river near where i live on the west coast. I can not remember what happens but when i wake i feel unsettled. I love this house and am a fan of Rights buildings and homes as well as the artwork in stained-glass and other media. Just a beautiful home. Someday i hope i figure out my recurring dream involving this house.
The exposed boulder that forms the hearth of the fireplace is part of the boulder that the Kaufmans used to sunbathe on near the waterfall prior to the house being built.
I really wanted to go check out falling water and take the tour, but knowing now that you can't check out "the hatch", which is to me is the coolest part of it, kinda makes me not want to. That's a bummer. But this is a great video! Thanks for the tour!
I live on Maui and have attended awsome New Years' Eve Parties at What was Anonimously Designed by Frank Loyd Wright for Marylin Monroe---I would like to see a full episode by your consortium on His Design Called The Grand Waikapu---it is simply beyond --- Beyond.
The rest of the tour is incredible too. The guest house, the bedrooms, the pool, the garage, all of it is awesome. We're so so thankful we were able to see and record what they were willing to share with us. Normal tours don't allow photos inside at all. And, of course, they were wise to leave some mystery there so people will need to come to take the whole tour themselves. Haha. Hope you get a chance to visit it someday!
I don't know the exact name of it, but it's a big soup kettle pot type thing that can swing out over the fire to cook right there on the fireplace. It's been a while since I've taken an actual tour, but I know they talk about it during the tour and I've seen it pulled out over too. Kauffmans used it for soups and stews and even hot beverages if I'm not mistaken. (At least I know that's what I'd use it for! Haha.)
Amazing to think it was designed and built in the 30's. Visited it recently. So cool. But I would agree with Edgar Sr. Kauffman, I'd rather have view of the waterfall than built over it where it is not visible from the house, besides from one end of one terrace. The bedrooms are quite small. FLW said that large bedrooms make one feel insignificant. I've never known one to feel that way, but ok. And there are some more "interesting" aspects of the house and the Kauffman's that isn't mentioned in the tour (understandable that they want to keep the focus on the architecture). But Edgar and Liliane had separate bedrooms. Kinda odd. Actually, they were first cousins. Not married out of romantic love, but to protect his money and business while Edgar Sr. getting the socially acceptable appearance of having a family. They did have one child, Edgar Jr., never married but had a partner. Edgar Sr. had a mistress throughout his marriage, his secretary. Liliane committed suicide in the house, taking a large quantity of barbiturates (sleeping pills) and alcohol one day. The legacy of this house is Edgar Jr. giving it to the conservatory, so very selfless.
The house & the surroundings are marvelous! These two tour guides ... not so much. I've had the privilege of visiting Fallong Water twice. The 1st time was sometime in the early 2000s. The male tour guide was considerably better than the ones giving this tour.
Yes, this episode is not a sample of the tour one would receive when visiting. Neither persons on this episode are daily tour guides. Marilyn is the host of this show and is being shown around the grounds, Ashley is the Senior Director and Curator of Education and was very kind to give us this tour on a day the facility was closed to the public. You are fortunate to have been there, it is a magical place.
@ 6:45 Notice The Guy Taking a Shower In The Waterfall Up On The Cliff Behind The Ladies!??😂💯 ....And at, 7:47 ....She States, "We're The Only Ones Here" Is That Guy On The Cliff a Ghost!??
Wish it was ghosts! THAT would have been awesome. Haha. Wasn't a person taking a bath, it was one of the employees doing some light landscaping. Even though they were closed for the day to customers, the workers and volunteers were still around. At the time of the tour, there weren't any other people inside the house.
Truly, I enjoy so much of F.L.W. work, but somehow I can't get over the fact that he built the house on the actual stone out crop where the family picniced for years. Well, now that our favorite spot is ruined, where will we go?
You are constantly repeating to appreciate the house you have to come here and see it. It's like you don't want to give much information about the house because you lead people to believe that you will tell them when they come. I wanted to see the house and it was nice to look in but compared to other podcasts on Wright's homes I learned very little from this tour.
I am very frustrated with this tour. I am handicapped. So I could never come there and actually get in the house. I am going to try and be respectful, but what you showed us did not make me want to go visit. I mean the exterior of the house and the exterior parts are very very beautiful. Being Frank Lloyd wright I would have hoped that he would have carried some of that beauty inside. I don't mean windows so that you can see the outside. I'm into architecture more than I am into the outdoors but the outdoors on this house are extremely unique and original and beautiful. Usually I don't find the outdoors to be very unique or beautiful. It all looks pretty much the same. Not true here. But my frustration is that this is by far the most boring Frank Lloyd house I have ever seen. I don't do open concept homes. I like for my imagination to be tantalized. I want to know what it looks like around every corner and I want every corner to look different. This is true outside the house but to only show us an open concept room does not tantalize any desire to see more. I understand why the kitchen was boring but it was absolutely atrociously boring. And to walk into one great big room that has no interesting twist or turns or alcoves. Nothing to tantalize the imagination. It's all right there in your face and it's all nothing but one great big Square room. I know that's the wave of today, but if I were rich, it wouldn't be the direction I would go. 😭. I want to see the rest of the house but I couldn't if I went to visit. So I'm very disappointed that the only thing that was shown to us was a room that isn't too dissimilar from most of the new homes being put out there on the market. You just walk in, and that's it. You're done seeing everything. Even from a little child, I wanted to explore houses. I wanted to see what was around the other corner and I wanted to see something fantastical. Being Frank Lloyd wright I was really hoping to see just that. But instead I saw the same old same old design that we're seeing in too many houses where you walk through the door and you see the kitchen living room and dining room all in one and any idea of seeing anything interesting is especially since it's not even interesting with alcoves in areas that are obscured. It's just all right there in all it's bland glory
I'm from England & had not heard of Frank Lloyd - Beautiful architecture that perfectly matches the stunning natural landscape!
We're glad that you found our video and got a glimpse at this treasure. Thank you so much for watching!

The impact that FLW's designing has on us, is profound. I am so happy that Falling Water is public space.
Such an enormous contribution by Edgar Jr to donate it so we all can enjoy it.
