My cowl support on the passenger side did the same- broke top one and wallowed hole on the bottom. (Mine is a 52 M38 from Upstate NY) my Jeep has more metal in it now than when I bought it. Keep on building!
A couple of thoughts regarding rust. A lot of people think that if you primer a vehicle then it won't rust. Actually if you primer something and leave it where it can get moisture, just as liquid paint is absorbed into the primer and protects the metal, the moisture in rain, snow, heavy dew etc., will be absorbed by the primer and sometimes rust out the metal from under the primer. A hot muggy Houston problem. Also, it appears you have made a wooden bed in the back like the old pickup trucks, and if you leave that wood over the metal under body or tub, then the water will probably hold up nicely, while the under wood metal will rust like crazy. I am really enjoying watching your series. Just watch out for rust pockets.
Hind sight I would have done things different. It’s funny what you learn in a year. At the time I was trying to get by with the tub I had until I found a better one but now I love the beat up old tub! Thank you for watching!
Nice job! Just curious what you used for the floor stiffener in place of the hat channel. You mentioned it briefly in your last video with the rock sliders but I didn’t see a video of it. Wondering if that was better/cheaper than buying a full replacement hat channel. Thanks.
The floor repairs predates UA-cam unfortunately. But I had a bunch of rectangular tubing laying around and I split it down the middle to rebuild the rotten hat channel. If you have the budget for hat channel I would recommend it. As far as strength I’d say it’s the same, but I had a lot of extra work figuring out how to bolt it back to the frame! Thank you!
Unfortunately I started the project before I started UA-cam so there is a lot of stuff undocumented. I have back tracked some and made videos on some things. Thank you for watching!
Did you make the the floor channel or buy it? My CJ2A came in pieces and didn't have the channel in the tub because the previous owner did repairs. Thanks
I made it all out of rectangular tubing I split in half. I had tons of it and it’s just as strong if not stronger than the stock hat channel. The reproduction stuff is really expensive. Hope this helps!
I bought the hat channel online and it fit “okay” but the front part where the cowl support comes down doesn’t match. (On my 52 M38 military Jeep). My entire floorboard was rust. I am building here on YT - my last video shows the Hat Channel.
