Definitely the melee combat is supposed to be a major part of the game, but the overall lack of weight and impact in the sword strikes as well as the simple melee system makes it look at first glance like it's only a backup to the shooting.
So far every person I've seen play this approaches it like it's a shooter first. Shooting doesn't seem to yield the same results as melee and u miss out on heals from executions. After playing myself I can confirm the rifle is useless. Cleared the first two stages without the use of the rifle.
