The first time I saw it, I had just finished watching it when my brother came in the room and saw me heaving sobs and asked me if someone had died. It hits home for me. What a gorgeous film.

Some films I consider to be the best foreign horror from each country
    Italy: Suspiria
    France: martyrs
    Japan: Godzilla
Sweden: let the right one in
South Korea: tale of 2 sisters
    Germany: nosferatu
    Mexico: Devils backbone
Spain: could you kill a child
    Morroco: kandisha

Celluloid Therapy fair point although I would consider the original to be a horror as its about the horrors of nuclear warfare. If not then Audition would be my pick for best Japanese horror film

Celluloid Therapy Fulci definitely made great movies, but the mood, camera work and plots of Argento were better in my opinion. I will have to check that movie out, that’s one of the only Italian horror movies I think I’ve never heard of.

Martyrs was way too much for me. But I still saw it again for some reason? I forced it upon my best friend and she has never forgiven me for it! But I needed someone to share the experience!! There's a point for me when disturbing just becomes unpleasant and there's no entertainment in that for me, but I agree that it's easily one of the most horrifying and well-done films of our time. My head hurts and my stomach aches when I think about that film too much. I'm happy to hear Eden Lake mentioned! That one stuck with me for a while, too.
p.s: the pool scene from Let the Right One In is easily one of the best horror scenes ever filmed.

Two Aussie films that are really good are The Loved Ones and Wolf Creek. Eyes Without a Face is great as well. I believe Almodovar was highly influenced by it when making The Skin I’m In.

Some great inclusions, but I'm shocked that Ringu and Ju-on: The Grudge were nowhere to be seen! What are people thinking?
Also, if it's films outside of the States, where were the British horror films? You mentioned Eden Lake, but how about Dog Soldiers, Event Horizon, Under the Skin or The Descent for starters (let alone classics like 28 Days Later, The Wicker Man, Hellraiser and An American Werewolf in London)?
And the brilliant Aussie eco-horror Long Weekend deserves a mention. The atmosphere is fantastic.

Happy to see The Wailing on there. It's a masterpiece of a film, even outside of its horror elements. In terms of 80s and 90s foreign horror, I suspect they may just be harder to come by in general. Plus the boom started around the early 2000s, when everything thereafter was released on the easy to find DVD format. And yay for suggesting Noroi! Didn't think anyone knew about that one.

You should also check Japanese: the Attic (very obscure Japanese horror movie about a woman and the mummy at the attic - so cool! I think it's around 2003-2008 movie)

Is it weird that I’m proud I’ve seen almost every one of these? I’m as shocked as you are about the Ringu omission, and the Pulse ranking. I didn’t dig Raw as much as some of these others. For those who loved Busan, I urge you to seek out I Am a Hero. It’s fucking awesome. Rec is one of the few films that scared the crap out of me. Martyrs scarred me for life, but was excellent. I loved High Tension and thought MAYBE it would make the list, but a lot of people didn’t like it, I guess. The Skin I’m In sounds like an updated version of an old French film called Eyes Without a Face. So creepy and messed up. Frontiers and They should have gotten honorable mentions. I’m sure I’ve forgotten a few, but great video!

I have seen every movie on this list, except Noroi: The Curse, which I had never even heard of. Considering I gobbled up all the Asian horror I could find in the late '90's/early 00's, I'm surprised this didn't come across my radar. It's currently on Shudder (maybe other platforms as well) and if you're a fan of J-horror/found footage, it's a very good one. It's much more complex than the average found-footage movie, with shades of Blair Witch and Uzumaki (especially in the mysterious use of symbols). I especially enjoy the way this movie acts as a documentary, mystery, while also including elements of other tv shows as part of the mystery. So many fun layers here. Good, good stuff.

I literally have seen every foreign film on both lists with the one exception of *Demonte Colony (2015)* lol. I'll make sure to watch it tomorrow evening. I am surprised *Frontier(s) (2007)* and *High Tension (2003)* did not make either list. Martyr, Inside, Frontiers, High Tension and Frontier(s) are on my top 20 extreme horror film list along with many of the j-horror and South Korean films. I will also check out your additional recommendations (House,Noroi,The Skin I live In and Troll Hunter [I might have seen this one but just don't remember].

And if anyone says "The Ring", then they're outright lying. Also addressing the video Suspiria is an Italian flick, there's no confusion.

Hi Emma, I like this list although some movies i haven't seen it. I would like you to make a review of 'Starfish' 2018, it's really enthralling and some scenes are beautiful. :)

Okay this is after the video... Well that was quite interesting Emma.
    (List Spoilers below the line.)
I think that Martyrs kind of freaks regular critics out. I have a friend who likes horror films, but not the way we do, he said he thought Martyrs was 'uneven'. And I thought what does that mean? Did the logic break somewhere. Was the acting bad? Did the plot have holes? I think that the ideas of the film took such a strong turn that he couldn't quite handle it. The mainstream critics have been very slow to get Martyrs. But I think eventually they will catch up. The mainstream critics love the Babadook, The Witch, Let the Right One In and Get Out. They like films with messages of a certain nature. Martyrs is too feral for that. ( I think The Woman, The Girl Next Door, and a few others are in a similar category.) My favorite country for horror in the last few decades is France. (French Belgium as a sidebar.)
Emma a couple of suggestions. I would have voted my true favorite horror film Les Yeux Sans Visage (Eyes without A Face) but I knew everyone else was going to mostly go 21st century, so I didn't want to throw my vote away. Next time maybe a weighted top ten or five list. Then I could put my German silent faves, and others down. But a longer list would provide more nuance. Also it probably should be divided by Centuries with 1999 included in the 21st Century for Ringu and Audition (which I like far more than Ringu).
And let me ask you isn't the Shining really an English film, completely shot there, with English crew? That shows just how confused the anglosphere is. The truth is American and English films are totally intertwined. How about limiting countries? No America, Anglo-Canada (otherwise Cronenberg should be higher.) Australia (sorry), New Zealand, UK. But English speaking productions from other countries are fine (Suspiria). Because really who considers Most of these countries that foreign? Or just an angloshphere list? But no Hollywood. Just my ideas for next time. But that was a great list idea. Do it again in a year or so with slightly different rules.

I watched 'Let the right one in' last week for the first time. Watched the remake almost a decade ago, so the Swedish version gave me these bursts of flashbacks every now and then. I don't really know how to compare them because it's been so long, but I really liked the Swedish one a lot.

[REC], hands down for me. First time I watched it, there were no subtitles, so it was Spanish only, and it still scared the hell outta me. haha
Close second would be A Tale Of Two Sisters, then El Orfanato.

Best foreign horror movie of all time (my guess): Ringu (1998).
Well, that guess was way off for me. Actually, my favorite foreign language movie (horror and all-time) is Diabolique (1956), which I know you will be covering in 31 Days Of Horror, so can't wait to hear your thoughts on that. You know me, I grew up with the classics (which I include Dario Argento) and never really got into the more extreme films. However, I think your top 10 list is great. Scenes from so many of those films are ingrained in my memory, but I always get nervous about suggesting any of those films to family & friends. You know what I mean? That look that the non-horror fans give you, saying "You like stuff like this?"

Italian movies were shot then dubbed in both Italian and English. Great suggestions. And I realised my South Korean game is weak.
Let the right one in is imho a weak adaption of a great novel.
My pick would probably be either Martyrs, Audition or Suspiria.
Older European horror movies can be brilliant, but have a complicated history of releases in the US. And UK horror is often confused as US.
Have you done any Mario Bava or Lucio Fulci movies btw?

  • @JohnJacksonJohnson
    @JohnJacksonJohnson 4 роки тому

I would've thought that 2003's "Haute Tension" (AKA "High Tension" in the US or "Switchblade Romance" in the UK) would've placed since it was from France, it's originally French, the effects were by Giannetto De Rossi, who was a student of the late Lucio Fulci!
The film was also directed and written by Alexandre Aja, who is known for films like:
    • "Piranha 3D"
    • "P2"
    • "Mirrors"
    • "Crawl"
    • "Maniac", which is a remake of "Maniac Cop"
    • "The Hills Have Eyes" remake
    • "Horns"
