My family adopted an orphan from the trains. He was deaf and jumped off at the crossing near the family farm. My great uncle and aunt just took him in and taught him to read and write. I dont even remember his name, but he stayed with them for the rest of his life. Working the farm and helping anyway he could.

@Lowkee I only remember the story because of my grandmother. He was adopted by a great-aunt and uncle. The uncle was killed in a robbery along those same train tracks in the 1930's and the Aunt was left to raise the children and run the store after his death. I think the boy from the orphan trains name was Ollie, and he lived with her and helped all he could. But as my own mother just passed away in April, I don't remember his real name and I have no one to ask now. I was born long after all of this took place. 😷 stay safe friend.

@Moogie B There was a programme set up in England through various organisations to encourage children to go to Canada and Australia. The organisations would be paid for them to encourage the children. For Canada, it was mainly the Catholic Children Society and the whole operation was known as the British Home Children. My father was sent to Canada and after a couple of years living on the prairies he and a friend absconded, went to Carlton and joined the CEF and served in France, including at Hill 60. The Australian programme was known as Sunshine and Oranges. The intention of both programmes was to remove impoverished, often orphaned or impoverished children from England, mainly London and suburbs.

I was just an extra child on this set as a 7 year old and I'm now 45. I just remember the cast was so nice to me and I looked up to all of them. I was there during the South Dakota filming in the Black Hills. What a great experience as a child. Now that I'm older with children I'm more understanding of the story.

Many years ago, I had a patient who had been an "orphan train" child. She was tiny woman, almost barely 5 ft. feisty and had such an interesting history but difficult to get her to ever be happy. That is how I learned of the Orphan Trains. Now I realize this practice went on for so many years. Bless her heart...Kathryn was her name and she gave me many hints about making home made bread (her job in her mid west home.) At times it was hard to put up with her eccentricities...but once knowing her background...all was so understandable. Be open to all people and their experiences...

This is a lovely film. The plot is cheesy, albeit based on real events, and it glosses over the children whose new homes turned out even worse than where they were before, but it's very well written and put together. My favourite bit is the dance at the last-but-one town with the guy calling the moves and the girl playing the spoons. I looked up the writer and producer, Dorothea G. Petrie, and was very sorry to learn that she died in November last year. She made a few films which I'll now be seeking out. Thank you Dorothea xx

It was neat seeing how they filled the water for the steam. I noticed a pattern of 7 miles between consecutive small towns near me. Being a city girl I saw the pattern but couldn't reconcile the reasoning. My husband, who comes from a railroading family, informed me that 7 miles is the distance a steam train could travel before needing to stop to refill the water tank. The towns were built to meet the needs of the railroad. My husband's grandfather started working for the railroad at 13. His father passed away and he was the oldest. He had to go to work to support his family, at 13 he was the man of the house.

Oh my god, thank you, THANK YOU for uploading this movie. I watched this when I was very, very young, but the movie made enough of an impression upon me that I still vividly remember the hanging of the boy, and how he gave his friend his shoes. I spent my teen years just finding the title of the movie, and then actually locating a physical copy - an exercise in failure until I found your upload. It's like plugging a substantial hole in my childhood.

A Film hasn't touched my heart like this film did, for a very long time, i don't have children so it was such a joy to watch and hope for the best for that innocence to find a good home, charming and important film in it's portrayal of a complex issue that informs our Humanitarianism, my hat's off to the Director and the actors , child actors at that too ! So glad I discovered this Film inadvertantly on UA-cam , Thanks for Uploading it, I feel Blessed !

This is Awesome. I actual remember that my parents Saved this movie on VHS from the original CBS broadcast December 22nd 1979! I watched it dozens of times because back then we didn't have an endless supply of movies and VHS Tapes were expensive. The hanging scene shocked me as a very young kid, but I remember joking about the scene in middle school. Crazy it's here!

I love this movie. It made me cry so much. There are children all over the world who are suffering like this and so many rich, and well to do didn't do anything. Instead they want more and more riches. Never satisfied with what they have. Others hurt them instead. May the Almighty God rebuke them.

In 1854 the first orphan train left New York City. The first stop west was Dowagiac,Mi (Doe-wah-Jack.)Dowagiac was a small manufacturing city known as “Stove Town” surrounded by many farms. Some of the children were adopted there by farmers. Some of the children eventually went to work in the stove/furnace factories that Dowagiac was known for. The biggest was the Round Oak foundry. Dowagiac is in SW Michigan just North of South Bend,Indiana between Kalamazoo and Chicago. Once known as the furnace capital Dowagiac lost most of the major stove/furnace companies it once had. Dowagiac now is mainly a bedroom community of 6,000 residents for the South Bend/Mishawaka and Elkhart Indiana metropolitan area. Dowagiac was also home to James Heddon inventor of the artificial fishing lure. Heddon was the largest manufacturer of fishing lures, rods from 1890s-1960s. Dowagiac is the headquarters for the Potawatomi Indian Nation and also home to Southwest Michigan College.

It is true, the way we treated children and we still treat them can be appauling. But I think that this movie shows the way it should be done. There are horrors and evil people all over the world....but there are also wonderful people who help the most vulnerable. I think that we have no control on other people behaviour, but only our own behaviour....why don't we focus on being the best human decent people we can be and hope to inspire others to do the same.

At 8:05, when Danny Mahoney meets the gaze of his friend, and there are no words to express what their eyes are saying, I get all choked up and tearful as though I had been present. This video just showed up on my tube while I was napping, and it had nearly played out when I woke up. They were at the square dance, and there was so much hushed emotion in the faces of the ones waiting to be chosen. I'm so glad I watched it to the end and then started it over from the beginning. This is HISTORICAL and well WORTH WHILE. Thank you so much for sharing!!
