    I used to play the trumpet when I was in 6th grade, before I switched to the baritone horn in 7th grade, and played the baritone horn in tandem with the tuba when I was in 8th grade. Thenn I started playing the tuba full time in high school, although when I was in 11th grade, I had 2 band classes, and I played the tuba in the first band class, Symphonic Band, and then played the euphonium in the second band class, Wind Ensamble.

    As a classical pianist, classical trumpeter, and jazz trumpeter, I find that pianists, cellists, and violinists tend to get all the glory as the main solo instruments, there's not nearly as many trumpet concertos as there are cello, violin, or piano. Its a shame, the trumpet truly is a great solo instrument and should get more spotlight.

      Based on the fact you said deciding between I am assuming you have only played for a year or two, and I think it would be best to pick one to focus on more intently if you ever become slightly serious. I play trombone in my high schools top jazz band, and I practice about an hour a night, and I still always try being way better and think I have a VERY long way to go to become really good, which I honestly do.So I suggest, for at least a few years, just focus on one instrument and get pretty good on that instead of being mediocre on two instruments (unless you invest A LOT of time). But if you are interested in playing jazz, trumpet is a great choice, I trying to learn trumpet right now actually. So I suggest you pick one and stick with it for awhile before stemming off (unless you plan on spending a lot of time practicing, which is what I did to learn trombone(seven years) and drums (4 years), but it's your call, practice hard!

    When he started to talk about how trumpet players have strong mouth muscles the first thing I thought of was, "Wow, that must come in handy. Any woman would be lucky." .......I am so sorry. Why am I like this?

    So does brass consist mostly of lip work? I'm a sax and piano player and I cannot comprehend not having a key for every note...

    • @BefDaWizard
      @BefDaWizard 9 років тому +6

      Yes, it mainly consists of loosening and tightening your lips and using valves, slides, etc.

      What my brass instructor always tells me is that the pitch that you buzz and what your embouchure is like comes first. Valves exist for the purpose of changing the length of tubes to resonate with that buzz but if the initial buzz is not good, you’re not gonna have a good time.

    I stopped playing the trumpet 20 years ago, this makes me want to play it again. I don't remember much, but I could make some sounds I reckon :P

    With me being a composer and studying instrumentation these videos are PRICELESS, and so incredibly helpful for my education. Thank you so much for making them and for sharing them to the public!
