Expect the first videos to start rolling out *next week*, as AI and Games #70 hits on AI and Games. While Smoke & Mirrors and Branching Factor will come out on AI and Games Plus.
I hope when Sons of the Forest releases you take a look at the changes they made to the AI.
Im super excited for the lecture and demonstration videos. The channel looks like it has a very bright future!
Great to see you adopting new changes! It's great to evolve your content every so often.
Here's to a year of success for you and your channel! 🍻
You having a PhD caught me off guard
Just cause the way you present things are so well done and entertaini- oh wait now it makes sense
Yes, I have a BSc, an MSc and a PhD (I also have a teaching degree, a PGCHE). But I don't like to talk about it a lot. It seems like a weird brag. But yeah, I am using a lot of what I learned to make videos. Maybe not what my lecturers envisaged, but hey, I do what I want. 😅
@@AIandGames that's great! it's nice to see stuff like this tbh
cause you explain things in a very nice way that my goblin brain can understand
@@TheBestWanderbug Goblins need love too.
Tommy actually taught me at university for a year. I had to drop out due to personal issues but he was great. The game jam weekends were great fun!
Hey Josh, it's been a while! Hope you're keeping well sir. I am happy to say that I no longer run the overnight game jams. I love that the students enjoyed it, but man that would completely mess me up given I still had to go to work and teach on Monday morning. 😅
#KUDOS to you, Dr. Thompson!! 👊😎 I'm so glad that I've come across @AI and Games, and can't wait for what's in-store for your platform(s)!! 🙌😊
Looking forwards to what you have in store. I've forwarded the video to my team and hoping they reach out to you regarding content!
Tommy, it's been such a pleasure to watch your channel grow over the years. Thank you for staying true to your vision and continuing to create such high-quality content; it is truly admirable. It's also great to see you taking the leap and turning your passion for edutainment into a what is hopefully a wonderful and sustainable career that will touch many more people than you could have reached in academia. I can't wait to see the new and exciting changes coming to the channel, and I'll be sure to like, subscribe, and share. Keep up the amazing work and cheers to the future of AI and Games!
Looking forward to what you have in store, Doc.
Thrilled as ever for everything to come! I've just taken my first step into the industry as an artist and your content is all the more interesting and pertinent for it. Looking forward to your deeper dives and wishing you all the best!
Congrats on your artist position. I hope it goes well for you.
Exciting to see the future of AI and Games! Can't wait to see what you have in store!
UA-cam hasn't been showing me your vids for a while now, I'll have to go out of my way to watch some more of your vids + backlog now
I've been hit or miss on seeing your videos, but this is great news and I wish you nothing but the best going forward! I look forward to the day I can watch do your course!
i'm a Sr. Gameplay programmer & really passionate about my work, and your every video notification is like a treat for me 😃
thanks a lot for such a high quality content & being a nice teacher.
best wishes for the future
Can't wait to see the new videos. Good luck with it all!
This was hands down the most well thought out and convincing update video I've ever watched, it's rare I leave an update video excited. I'm all for this change I wish you the best!
Really looking forward towards the future.
I love your channel and I’m looking forward to seeing the changes and growth. I have no technical expertise, but I find your videos enlightening. Thank you.
The best news in 2023 so far. Tommy, I'm rooting for your success. (Don't get eaten by YT algorithm)
...Thats an amazing business model, the channel acts as a showcase of your work vice the actual work. It totally changes the incentive structure vs other channels in terms of outputs...
I’m honestly super excited for the future of the channel(s), especially after having dipped my toes into AI in college.
Looking forward to the future and new content of this channel
Cool stuff! I can tell you put a lot of effort into planning this. Looking forward to seeing the different series.
Give or take, this whole thing has been in the works for... just shy of 3 years. So it's equally exciting as it is terrifying to finally be making it happen. 😅
Good luck on the changes! I be looking forward to the new video, and I'd love to see a video on the AI of Untitled Goose Game sometime, that would be cool!
Very excited for all the new content you got lined up. Your channel is a beacon of fresh and interesting content. All the best for the future!
First off... YEAHHHHHH BLOODBORNE!!!
Ahem... Just had to get that out. This is all great news! Very happy for you. It's awesome that the channel supports your livelihood without actually *being* your livelihood. That somewhat alleviates the problem so many other channels face of being beholden to the whims of the algorithm and getting locked into a type of content production solely to appease that concern (or dealing with the consequences of ignoring it). I'm looking forward to all of these things. Perhaps your series on proc-gen will cover NMS at some point which is probably my most significant experience with it.
It would be really nice if Hello Games ever replied to my emails. That's for sure.
As someone that works with computer vision, to me AI always revolves around extraction of deep features and image-level information, so it is always refreshing to see how versatile AI can be when applied to games, and I always learn something new with your videos.
I really appreaciate your video style that doesn't trivialize how things work and isn't afraid to bring up more niche concepts like FSMs.
I'm glad you'll continue to bring us this amazing content, and I can't wait for it! Keep up the good work!
I'm really excited to see some more ! You're really helping me finding my place in the game industry and I hope I can somehow give back to you someday.
Oh wow, this is some great content. I like to learn about AI and Games, and that Scottish guy sounds pretty cool.
I would like to watch more of this content, and would like t..
Don't know, how you planned to end that sentence) But thanks for your work anyway. All of your materials were of great help and inspiration over the years.
Not gonna lie, it took me a second to realise you were copying my own (fake) comment. 😂
I look very forward to the chess automaton story because that was fire
I think games have been the backbone of AI development in real life applications. Things like the Euphoria engine originally being developed for biomechanics and motor neuron nervous system simulations at Oxford etc.
I've always wondered, because I'm quite sure that things like fully autonomous driving are a pipe dream without *some form* of human intervention. Which makes me wonder, if there's ever been a simulation of traffic with pedestestrians, cyclists and other hazards all coming together harmonically with people going to and fro their destinations without issue. I think that's one way video games have a direct application into real life perspective.
Overall I know AI is the future, and gaming has been it's main pioneer. And I'm excited to follow and learn from your channel further as this year continues.
Thank you, Tommy! I'm really looking forward to your new work, and I've been following one of the projects you're involved with, Deathground, pretty closely through its development. I know how tough it can be to juggle multiple jobs, so I hope you get some well-deserved time off for relaxation with your new workload. :)
This is great, but I believe that the main problem of this channel is that every video seems to be its own "thing" and there is no good way to jump from one to another. I would recommend you develop some visual representation with the connections between the different videos. A mind map where people can see the different branches of AI (i.e., classical, logic and machine learning) and can create a "roadmap" for themselves (starting from a video about a game they like and ending up on an AI101 video where you explain the underlying mechanism).
Maybe you could start by creating a basic mind map in a section of your website and, after that, think about creating a course around it (e.g., by allowing the users to keep track of the nodes they have visited).
Good Luck!
This all sounds great and very sensible. Looking forward to your Mechanical Turk video, that thing has always fascinated me!
Cheers Rees, and congrats on your own recent success. Great to see your audience continue to grow! 🙂
I've been following your content for years now. I can't even recall when I first found your channel. I remember some of your videos we're still you lecturing about the AI of F.E.A.R. at your Uni. :D Hope you do well!
Have you considered as an additional target audience the Indiegame developtment community? There's a fair amount of beginner devs these days looking for tutorial content. You might be able to draw some of (us) them in with say showing how to implement steering behaviors, pathfinding algorithms etc? I'm sure you have the know-how.
As mentioned in the video, I need time/space to do tutorial material right. Releasing one video at a time isn't practical. It needs to built and planned out in bulk and right now I'm not in a position to do that. But the hope is for it to be done in the future.
Great!
Good for you, Tommy! Best of luck. I think I'll go and buy myself one of those mugs 👍
Cheers Phil, hope you're keeping well man.
🍽 ready for more!
proud of you
Branching Factor? Plus Four to Science lives! Looking forward to listening!
Y'know, Mike and I just joked about Plus 4 while recording a Branching Factor episode, and that nobody would remember it. You've proven us wrong.!
new subscriber gained
just discovered this channel and i really love it!
one think i would love to see is an AI101 video on HTN, but happy with everything u put out 🙌
Welcome aboard. An AI101 on HTN is in the backlog. Just finding time to make videos is the challenge right now! 😅
@@AIandGames totally get it. thank you !
I'm honestly so happy for you! I'm 22 and I feel lost in life right now, I adore all things tech and gaming yet despite my qualifications and experience I can't find work anywhere, I feel isolated and out of options tbh. I'm so happy to see you have found your passion and you're making it a reality, it's honestly inspiring and I wish you all the best buddy!
Thanks, but (as difficult and as basic this advice is), try not to despair. When I was your age (spoiler alert, I'm over 15 years older than you) I was feeling pretty directionless. My career path, whatever you want to call it, has changed more than once over the years. And more often than not, getting that first job was the hardest part. I've been jobless more than once and struggling to get any momentum on my own path multiple times and it really affected my mental health. I appreciate the job market sucks more now than it did then and so my experiences arguably don't equate, but persistence sadly is the key. I can safely say there have been moments in my life, where a bit of persistence combined with dumb luck worked out in my favour. This UA-cam channel being one of them.
If there's anything our community can do to help over in our Discord, by all means come on over and ask.
@AI and Games honestly just thank you so much for that message.
I genuinely can say I relate to literally every word. I feel like I've worked so hard and gotten so qualified in so many things from photoshop to photography to digital media and website design (html and css) yet I can't get my foot in the door of a business, I feel so directionless as you said, like I took the first steps but now im in the middle of a forest without a compass. I've even gone out of my way and spent 6 months learning every current generative Ai tool, how to install them locally, maintain them and how to maximise their performance just to prepare for future job offerings when Director of Ai inevitable becomes a normal job.
And ya the mental health part was pretty intense for me for the last few years, lost a lot of friends cos of covid, ended up seeing people's true colours once I didn't spend every day with them and then the whole job thing on top of that destroyed me but I feel like now, 2 years on I'm starting to feel a bit normal again.
I don't usually use discord but honestly I might just join and try to interact, maybe it could help me 😊
Again thank you so much man, that message and how much it relates to my situation really made my day in a weird way, just knowing someone I admire has gone through the exact same thing I am definitely makes a difference 🙂
I started watching AI and games in 2018, and since then I work in a AI team as a designer
And your content helped me join the team and basically understand everything going on from the get go, so, thanks a lot :)
Awesome stuff. Glad to hear it!
Fantastic news man, this is exciting!
Thanks Andrea. Hope you're keeping well.
The history of ai and games seems so Fun! I love historical content, and this first Episode seems to be about some sort of analogical AI chess machine?? I am all in for It ;)
I'm excited to see how people take to it. It's going to be quite different from other videos, but there's so many really interesting topics to explore.
If this means more and more regular high quality content, I'm all for it.
That's the plan! 😅
This is very niche. Should not look for more subs as you say. And strengthen current content. All the best. Looking forward to it.
I don't know if you will read this, but I loved your video on Deus Ex Human Revolution, I would love an episode with (Behaviour Splinter Cell DA) Michael McCann, or Austin Wintery on Fireteam Elite.
I wrote this comment at the beginning of this video, then noticed you are talking about your channel, not AI influence to games. Anyway, this comment exists now.
I would guess game engines will get an AI's that looks over the engine, the gameplay and change things on the fly. Like what, where and when to spawn things like enemies, supplies, guns, ammo, health ans what not. It might also figure out when somthing is bugged, the player stuck or so and change/fix that on the fly (I'll guess that's more in the future).
But what do I know, I'm not a programmer or so.
Oh BOY AI in The Sims is gonna be a fun one because it's so fucking janky. Please tear that shit to shreds. The new stuff looks really interesting too, especially the history series. (Side note: I really hope this new direction works out for you. You deserve financial stability AND to enjoy your work - of which there should be a healthy amount.)
Interesting to hear the backstory and congratulations on the expansion, but the startup situation does come across like advertising or sponsored content which can be a murky situation
I appreciate that it can sound sketchy. I'm very particular about working with a potential sponsor (I have turned away dozens of AI startups over the past 2-3 years) but with modl we saw eye to eye. I make stuff how I want to make it and without interruption. They get to help me make it and they get their name on it.
Unlike all the other companies that have reached out to me over the years, I've known the modl.ai founders and many of their employees for over 10 years. So they know me and what I want to do. Our working relationship is really good as a result.
I got turned down by King's college many years ago (applied as a student) then worked in education myself for some years. Anyways, it seems the main takeaway is there will be more AI & games content? Therefore, I will be looking forward to it! Although I'm a little concerned about you quitting your job but it sounds like you have things figured out!
So I worked at King's College part-time for around 2.5 years while working with several games studios. I am now at a point where the game dev work keeps me plenty busy. But with enough free time to make videos too!
@@AIandGames Nice! I hope it goes well. Love the channel. Might be interesting to hear your thoughts on the new AI's which have been giving game developers a scare recently.
@@RewdanSprites That topic is on the cards for later this year for sure.
Have you played Rain World? I would love to see an episode on that on this channel :)
Hi could you link AI and Games plus on the main channel. I don't personally see the benefit of splitting your work onto two channels but I recommend trying to make it as visible and as easy to access as possible. I love your work and am excited to see more but I don't see the point of hiding some of it away.
There's a big difference between 'stuff that is educational' and 'stuff that is fun'. And particularly for UA-cam recommendations and such, it's best to keep them separate. But don't worry, I'll be sharing stuff from the other channel frequently.
@@AIandGames I respectfully disagree. I found you to be quite effective at bridging the gap between the two.
Yeah it's not about my skill level (though you're kind to say so), it's about how the UA-cam recommendation algorithm is really bad (shock surprise). I had this issue years ago when I actually posted tutorials and other video types, they did badly and didn't get picked up by 'the algorithm'. My UA-cam partner manager blamed it entirely on the fact it was too 'different' from my main output that the algorithm didn't understand whether to promote it or not. So yeah, extra channels it is.
im surprised this channel still hasnt covered anything rimworld related
Whats the game from 5:05-5:15?
Looks like Dead Cells
@@Dumplestiltzken thanks bro
Yes, as mentioned, it's Dead Cells. Go play it. It's very good.
What's the game @ 5:05?
Dead Cells, it's one of those 'very good' video games.
@@AIandGames Thanks a bunch, I'll check it out. Great vids as always, my man 🙂 Excited to see what's next.
Can I still join discord for free?
Yup, the Discord is broken up into 'free' and 'supporter' areas.
discord.aiandgames.com will get you there.
It's not video about the future of Ai, it's about your channel :(
I thought the title explained that pretty well
@@Twisted_Logic Now make a video about the future of AI
Nah, then I'd be like every other asshat techbro pretending to know what I'm talking about.
I like being able to talk about how stuff actually works and point to sources to prove it. 🙂
