- Welcome back to our Super Cub Scooter Cannonball Run trip! Today is Sunday, July 18, 2021, and we are riding 526 miles from Hot Springs, SD to Rock Springs, WY. This is a long ride today, so skip around with the chapter markers below.

This was our longest ride day of the Cannonball, and it was my favorite because of the spectacular views in Wyoming. I could have skipped the long gravel road sections, but there were some amazing sights in the back country that I'm glad I experienced.
We rode for over 15 hours before reaching the hotel, and the last 90 minutes of that was on a dark, deserted gravel road. We weren't able to make very good time on the scorecards today, but we still managed to get all of the check points and bonus points for perfect scores again!

Beautifully filmed, lovely country. Really enjoying this series. That’s the algorithm sorted, now to get a coffee on and carry on watching. If my travel buddy just beggared off like that, I might have been a lot less complimentary and sympathetic, especially as you stopped for him………
I can tell you that during the rainy season and winter you would not be able to travel on those dirt roads. Can"t believe you were able to make it on those roads. This cannon ball run is brutal especially that you guys did it on Cubs. What an endurance test. Props to you guys. Great vid
Agreed! Those routes were more suited for BDR rides on ADV bikes! I would have had an absolute blast out there on my Yamaha XT250 with its 9" of suspension travel and 11" of ground clearance. I would have been standing up, fishtailing the back end, and laughing like a hyena!
We made it through all of that gravel Hell, and we never dropped our bikes or broke anything in the Cubs! That's a real accomplishment! 🤣👍 --QM
i have already made up my mind i'm doing the southern one from Cal. to the east coast. if i have to buy one in Cal fly out and get on it and brake it in the hard way. i want a trail and still looking but i will take anything legal for this run i dont care if its 279 cc or 50 cc i will do it. LOL. i wish i wouldn't have found your videos now. i blame you. LOL.
These bike are something else. How they can run flawlessly from south to north and then west of the country, thousands of miles at nearly 100% throttle without issue. It’s truly amazing now well Honda does with their bikes and their reliability.
I finished your 2023 cannonball videos and I got bored so I started your 2021 videos. I can’t get enough of them lol. Those rock roads are probably why I’ll never do the cannonball. I can do rock roads but I’d rather go my own pace and not have to be on a time limit. I would go slow and take my time and if it got dark, then I would just set up camp. On my own adventure rides, I can do that. With cannonball, I’d have to keep going and hit the checkpoints.

Yeah man that 30% grade was ridiculous. The cub you were riding was like really man you want me to claim that you better not stop don’t stop you stopped dammit. And I thought I was abusing my cub by maxing the throttle out for like an hour or so trying to keep up with traffic during the break in time. You guys definitely put these cubs to the test I mean the girls from the anime said if you have a cub you can go anywhere and I think you guys are proving that that’s true but to really go anywhere you might need the trail cub. I think when the girl said you can go anywhere, I think they meant on the road now yes, technically, that was a road but that was one heck of a road.
Love riding my Cub but don't think I could sit on it for 15hrs...😳... Amazing men and their machines..👍🤠👍.. Good job Quasi.. hat's off to Adrian as well..👍👍

This was to me the worst of any of the dirt roads we had to ride. Many time longer then we were told and many times worse. A local told me that one section had been an un-serviced section of road for a few years only used by the all wheel drive community. I described as a road about to be reclaimed by nature.
Man, that last bonus point in the dark was really sketchy. We almost skipped it, but we wanted to complete the event with perfect scorecards. If we had known about the last bonus point on Day 10 on the meteor shower road, then we certainly would have skipped that one. 🤣👍 --QM
@@QuasiMotard same here. I drove through a herd of deer or some sort of antelope that were leaping all around me. Scared the crap out me when they appeared suddenly out of the dark.
I like the way you are so in tune with your machine. You feel it so much that you body cramps up from the stress. It gives the little Honda a fighting chance though. LOL
Thank you, thank you, thank you... I was beating myself up for skipping that off-road section in Wyoming. I didn't want to destroy my scoot. Now I see that I made the right call.

This makes me appreciate my travels in my old 4X4 E350 campervan. About 20 years ago, I hit peak prosperity. I was divorced and I had stock options. So I bought the campervan to show my kids the great outdoors. Then the dot bomb hit, and I got laid off. Fortunately I had sold the stock options in time, so I took my severance and went on a 5 week trip with kids from Texas to Alaska via the Oregon trail and the Alcan highway. I went all the way up to Prudhoe bay on the Dalton highway. It was a lot more expensive, but rather more comfortable. And with the V10 and the 4.11 axle ratios I could violate the speed limit up any pass. I think I'm too spoiled to do those scooter rides. And I'm now old and decrepit. And I[m married to a wonderful women who has infected me with the convertible bug. So now I want paved roads and motels.
It does look like quite an adventure, and it's impressive what those things can do. I should mention that the campervan was a Quigley 4X4 with a really nice 5 link front suspension. And a good low center of gravity, helped along by all that 4X4 hardware, and probably by the water tanks as well. It cornered pretty nicely, and most people don't really drive close to the limits. I have fun keeping up with some fancy Subaru on the Alcan highway. He felt the need to cross over the yellow line to follow the racing line. I didn't seem to need to.

Id like to take the CRF1100L on those gravel roads. The Africa Twin was made to conquer these kind of things. Especially with the DCT on that which is tuned for off-roading.
Something for this years cannonball. At 8:45 you guys stop for Adrian to take some caffeine pills. The laws around Ephedrine have loosened up again and you can buy it behind the counter at most pharmacies. The brand name is BronkAid Max (the "Max" being Ephedrine only, instead of being mixed with a mega load of decongestants). It only lasts a couple of hours, but it also isn't as jittery as caffeine since it is a proper dopaminergic stimulant, would be good for the last few hours on long days.
If you have allergies it will open up your nose and lungs right quick, for a while at least.
I hate taking any drugs or stimulants, but it's necessary sometimes. Those long, consecutive days on the Cannonball were definitely challenging. I might consider taking that along as an emergency contingency this year. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM
The funny thing is I bought my Cub to save my Rebel from the gravel track I need to ride down to get to the sailing club it arrives tomorrow 2nd March 2022, enjoying your tour and I am planning my own trip in the UK doing what you have done in 2 days in a week so well done for all the tips on riding and maintenance over your trip.
The continental divide is the overlap of 2 tectonic plates.

Thank you for recording your crossing of the Snowy Mountain Scenic Byway. I had intended to ride it last year but my wife chose to accompany on a long tour elsewhere. I hope to get there this summer. Kudos to you for the epic scooter ride. I may have paid 4x more for my Harley Road King but I like to think that it's 4x more comfortable. 😁

JC, that is a fucked up route! You guys are doing great! I can't believe the terrain. But yes I can. Trip from Des Moines to Santa Barbars in Honda Civic with 12" tires. I chose to not drive interstate as often as possible and ended up on roads worse than you showed. I was on a road of boulders. The decent was into Jackson Hole. Had one flat. Contenental devide is rain on one side goes to Pacific, on other Atlantic. Holy shit, this was painful to watch. You had to ride it.
Dirt road would be a blast on dirt bikes but looks like organizers think differently. lol

I hesitated a long time to watch day 7. Triggered PTSD. I wiped out 3x on that fn’ gravel, I barely made it up that 35% grade on the SMax. I opted out of that last gravel section and took the highway/long way to the hotel. I was dying with my 4 broken ribs (didn’t know they were broke) but they hurt a lot. Only thing I remember after the wipeouts was Libby flats and the next check point. Holly sh/T that was a tough day. Cursed David’s name over and over.

Howdy, Larry, and thanks for the feedback! I currently have 24 bikes in the stable, but I'll be thinning that herd sometime this spring. Several viewers have asked if I could do a "family photo" or a tour of all of the bikes, but I haven't been able to do that yet. My bikes are scattered across my garage, my business warehouse, and another friend's garage... so it's difficult to get all of them together at the same time.
Another reason that I haven't done that group photo is that I don't want to appear to be bragging or showing off. I'm just a moto-addict that loves to ride and collect motorcycles. 🤣👍 --QM

Gravel on the Cub isn't what I would call "fun" 😉 Many of the other scooters didn't fare too badly on the gravel (aside from rider errors) because of their wider tires. The Super Cubs have thin little pizza cutter tires at only 70mm wide in the front and 80mm wide in the rear with no knobbies, so that made riding on soft surfaces and deep gravel quite treacherous.
The trailer's weight behind the bike added to the challenge because of the extra inertia and delayed steering. We were riding heavy with all of our camping equipment and motorcycle spares on board, which added another ~120 lbs to each bike... much like riding with a passenger on the back. We will offload our heavy stuff to the support trucks so we can ride faster and lighter in the next SCBR. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

I can't believe anyone with a small wheeled scooter made it thru that. You guys have some mad riding skills. Would love to know where exactly these roads were. On a small dual sport or mountain bike those gravel roads would be fun, but not on a scooter
I didn't think it was possible to ride that far in one day considering the different and tough road surfaces you had to contend with. It really is a test of endurance.

I crushed 720 miles in one day on the little CT125. It was definitely a long, butt-numbing haul to get up there, but the little Honda didn't skip a beat! I'll be posting that video series on my channel soon. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

My piaggio mp3 only get 60 mpg because its heavy 560bls. I have carry three 3l jerry cans just keep up with you traviling that long distance! QM

Really enjoy your videos, especially this series. Other than the SH150 (I believe that's correct) and the PCX, I haven't been a big fan on some of the Honda bikes until I started seeing your selections. Curious, would your trip have been better in the Trails 125? Was it possible to modify it enough for the trip? Nice work on those trailers BTW. Keep'em coming......pretty cool.

You and me both, buddy! I'd love to be a full-time, on-the-road videographer if it was a sustainable "job". Unfortunately, this is a niche hobby that only a miniscule percentage of the population watches... let alone actually goes out and DOES! It requires a dedicated mindset and gluteal fortitude to suffer the long hours (and discomfort) that these trips can dish out. 🤣

So seeing you do these runs makes me wonder...what do you do if the battery dies on the Cub? Are you able to bump start it since there is no kick starter?
Yes, we tested the bump start theory several times. It works as long as there is enough battery to unlock the switch with the smart key. If the battery is disconnected or totally dead, then you can't unlock the column switch to enable the ignition.
The bump start is a little tricky, but it's easy after practicing it a few times. We found that it's easiest to switch the transmission into 1st gear and then shift and HOLD down for 2nd gear to keep the clutch disengaged (first gear tended to slide the rear tire, so 2nd was easier). Then we pushed off with one foot and then released the shift lever to "dump the clutch" when rolling fast enough. It's hard to get rolling fast enough while hopping on one foot and keeping the shift lever down, but it can be done. 😉👍 --QM

My camera mount started drooping due to the rain after the first couple of days of the event (3M tape was stretching and slowly letting go). I fought with it for 3 weeks trying to angle the camera upward enough to point forward. So, I just had to work with what was available. --QM

No, I changed the chain for a fresh one at th end of Day 6. The old one had ~11K miles on it and it was stretched and kinked too much to continue. Luckily, we had 3 new OEM chains with us at the start of the trip. 😉👍 --QM

These are the KipMoto SherpaX trailers: kipmoto.com/pages/sherpax . The manufacturer only makes small batches of these trailers 2-3 times per year. So, getting a spot in the limited production queue can be a lengthy process. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

🤣 LOL! Yep... we saw lots of crazy things like that during our trip. Most of those curiosities were found on the long stretches of road between somewhere to nowhere. We saw little farm houses with bizarre yard art, like cars planted vertically in the ground with gardens growing in/around them. There were frequently horses/cows/dogs just sitting or standing in the roadway scores of miles away from civilization. Another oddity was a burned out yellow school bus sitting on a deserted county highway in the middle of nowhere.
It's truly amazing to see how EMPTY most of the country is, particularly in the north-central states... it's just a barren wasteland with (somewhat) paved roads. 🤷♂️😉👍 --QM
