- In this scene, Rocky Sullivan steps in as referee when Father Jerry can't handle the kids.
Movie: Angels with Dirty faces (1938)
Great scene. Awesome movie, one of my favourite.
-The clip belongs to WB. - Фільми й анімація
The Dead End kids were truly put in their place by Cagney, who was tougher than they were.
Cagney never forgot his old friends and helped them financially throughout his life. He married just once and remained faithful till the end. Success didn't spoil him. A man of true character. Love you Big Shot.
Paul Newman also.
@@StratBurst92 Newman got a Stradivarius; no need for other violins
@@StratBurst92 Only Newman married twice, not one like Cagney. But Newman's charity work is absolutely admirable
Who else but Cagney would name check his childhood buddies when being given the highest award in American film as he was with the A.F.I. award in 1974...a lyrical dynamo!
@@StratBurst92 well, he left his first wife for Joanne Woodward and while he loved her dearly he always felt guilty about failing his first wife and children. So, no one is perfect (except Jimmy Cagney comes closest!).
I can't believe this movie ain't for free on here, it's 90 years old.
Even the title angels with dirty faces is classic
Cagney was so ahead of his time it's incredible. You could stick him in a movie like goodfellas made over 50 years after this and he would have been perfectly cast with De Niro and pesci. What an actor
James Cagney an exceptional actor of his time.
R.I.P.
A fake punch with a kick to the shin. Classic Cagney move.
Best actor who ever lived ,I still cry when he goes to the chair ,he did it for the kids .
or did he? we hope so, but we can't be sure....that is why the ending is so good....
@@essessessesq the ending has always made me very angry, i see the priest as the villain ultimately. upset me to no end when he honored the priests demand
@@robotbobby7354 The point of the ending is that we do NOT KNOW why he behaved that way. There is NO evidence we can point to either way...Did Cagney repent of his tough-guy attitude, and decide that being a criminal who is a hero to poor kids was NOT a good thing for those poor kids? OR was Cagney NOT the tough-guy he pretended to be, and his behavior was genuine? we have no way to know.
@@essessessesq the first possibility is moot because cagney led to material improvements in the poor kids' lives, which the priest does not and will not do, and the second possibility is horrifying as the priest relishes cagneys true suffering. each way is a "bad" ending (not in terms of quality)
@@robotbobby7354 Cagney always said he would NEVER play a criminal who was glorified as a hero. He said that his Catholic morality would not let him act in a film where the bad guys WON. He said he would not give a bad lesson to young people. That probably explains why the character here ends as being shown to be a COWARD who was not tough. Cagney ends the character as not being a hero to those poor kids. The character either faked it for the kids, or he actually was NOT so tough. Either way, Cagney had his way, and the violent criminal character was NOT a hero
Great actor none today could ever match
More than an actor...Cagney is like a life affirming spirit...little wonder why half the world tried to imitate his cheeky walk & patter!
Cagney had so much charisma that he could have lost 90% of it and still been better than any actor today.
He really did have it
Haha Jerry jaye, absolutely spot on mate, in full agreement👍
@@dougreed2257 yes, he was "cool" even
before that term was in use.
absolutely correct. Good guy or Bad guy he was awesome.
@@dougreed2257 thanks, Doug
He was such a great actor , Angels with Dirty Faces, White Heat to Yankee Doodle Dandy ...he had it all .
Superb human being all around, Period!!!!!
The physicality! Cagney’s comedic chops here are incredible. Moe, Larry and Curly would be impressed
yes, they look like Moe Howard's moves!
Cagney's every gesture was lyrical...way more impressive than Tracy or Brando for me...
He was skilled in judo i believe.
@@essessessesq Never thought of that, but yeah!
Energy just burns off him.
Cagney is one of the all time greats if not the greatest screen actor of all time 👍
From a story I read: The Bowery Boys were real ball-busters in real life. They had given Bogart the business earlier and when Cagney came onto the set, he decided to set them straight. The punches and kicks on the basketball court were not pulled. After that, they were meek as lambs.
Hey, at what point is the line "You slap me in a dream you better wake up and aplogize"? I thought it was this scene but didnt hear it
The kick in the shins was something he used a lot.Very effective.i used it a lot in the dojo .Something the ther guy never expects.Great move.
CAGNEY ... I'm so glade my pap watched his movies. One of the best
Cagney a great man and actor, the best. Great movie the ending was phenomenal
A one of great, won’t be another
Cagney was better than ALL the actors in Hollywood put together! 🎬📽🎬📽🎬
i live my live like James Cagney ..... not the worst part of his Movies.... but his Best Movie Personas
He really was a tough guy in real life he said in his neighbor Hood where he grew up that if you didn't know how to fight that you better learn how
I think he grew up on the Upper East Side of Manhattan.
That Cagney walk . Almost ballet like .
well sure...as he always said "i'm not an actor, i'm just an old hoofer" [dancer]

I'm a big fan of the early Cagney movies! He may have been short in stature but he came across like a bull moose you didn't want to lock horns with! I was also a big fan of the Bowery Boys as a kid! Pat O'Brian, another film great of his time, was good in this film as well. I had a big crush Ann Sheridan. She was a native Texan born in Denton! They have some honeys down in Texas for sure!
Hey, at what point is the line "You slap me in a dream you better wake up and aplogize"? I thought it was this scene but didnt hear it
My favourite actor! Pure dynamite!
"Well if ya' didn't do nothin' don't do it again"....HAHAHAHA!!!
That was a classic!
Leo Gorcey: Can't you even shove a guy in this game? 😂
@@user-xo5qe6es2wAlso Gorcey: "I didn't do nuttin'!"
Best referee ever 🤣
The way kids should be taught.
Cagney so excellent with his Acting skills! 🤣👌✌️💕
self-taught actor.....no fancy acting school
I have been in love with cagney since i ,was 9 years old now 71. Carol mirabile brisendine
"Good old Rocky!"
Oh so have I , now I am jealous 😍 wasn't he the greatest Icon ever 🍃👼🍃 James Cagney RIP 🌿💙 🌿
Since I was about 10..now 72
Since i was 11 Im now 60. Mum used to let me and my brother watch with my dad who said back then he was the Greatest actor there will ever be and he wasn't wrong.
One film that is not mention offen is 1959s Man of a thousand faces, a biography of silent movie star lon Chaney, in it , cagney gives one of his finest performances. His character comes alive without any cagney mannerisms. Don't overlook this movie.
It was brilliant. And when Lon Sr was dying, and wrote 'JR' on his make up kit...
Ann Sheridan was beautiful!
He was a true star and always had a wonderful life RIP sir God Bless you x
Cagney and the Bowery Boys !!! GREAT !!!
Butch Czamanski ...That was the Dead End Kids, Butch!
@@brucescott4261 Yup.
I like the fake-out punch then kick to the shins lol
Yes ,that move is great .I did karate for 8 years ,and the hard kick in the shins was a shock to guys I sparred with .Bearing in mind I kicked with bare feet ,and still inflicted pain and bruising on the other guy.
If you ever get in a argument with no way out ,just kick the other guys shin bone with edge of your shoe, and either ( while he is stunned ) hit him in the face ,or run.
Last guy I did it to years ago had to go for medical treatment, because unlucky for him I was wearing heavy duty Biker Boots.lol
Jimmy was the coolest bad boy forever
Loved this movie. Saw it as a girl too young to know it was way over 30 yrs before my time! I was convinced Rocky made it to Heaven, even as a young girl.
Whether or not he acted a coward at death, he would have made it to heaven. People make it to heaven on Grace, Jesus's death on the cross, not on their own actions.
That Rocky made that sacrifice is telling - it shows a good heart. It's likely he did accept Grace.
The greatest Icon ever 🌠💙🌠 RIP James Cagney 👼🌠👼
And Sheridan she was a knockout 😜
She sure was, sent my heart a flutter!

I LOVE THIS MOVIE
America's most VERSITILE Male Actor of all time!
atiboyful TRULY!
Best double-slap ever @ 2:26 LOLOL

What accent?
I think it was " Whadaya hear, whadaya say?" LOL! Great movie, one of my favorites.
The Good Ole Days
That was a badass basketball game
Miami 808 bro im so laghing my ass off to that comment
People were tough back in the 1930s, you had to be during the depression, only the strongest survived. They were tough during the roaring twenties too with all the speakeasies, bootlegging, and gangsters. It's ironic naming this video "playing by the rules" when nobody back in those days did.
Yes
Travelling and double dribbling non stop
What a brilliant scene, so good, so funny, amazing
People were certainly tough back then because they had no choice but to be. "If you didn't do nuttin then don't do it again." Classic stuff.
Yep, during the Depression, only the strongest survived.
Great line, I’m going to use that once awhile...👍🏼😷
He was one of marlon brando's favorite actors.
Speaking of Marlon Brando, I watched his movie "The Wild One" just today on HD demand. 🎬🚴♂️🚴♀️🚲
@@raymondsteen5316 when you watch the Wild One, you appreciate how well he could ACT,,,,Brando was a well-educated, classically trained Shakespearean actor, who could make you BELIEVE he really was a lower-class, no manners, hoodlum and lout....
Anne & Jimmy Great Pat too
Well..if ya didn't do nothing, don't do it again. LOL
Cagney had more charisma in one pinky finger than any actor since had in ten fingers!
So true. When he's on screen you can't look at anyone else.
atiboyful I love Cagney he was and always will be the greatest! All you have to watch is Yankee Doodle Dandy to know that.My favorite Cagney film.
Jack McCullough He had so many great movies it's hard for me to decide! I am partial to Yankee Doodle Dandy though, I love that movie.
yes, charisma was the word when describing Cagney...nobody like him, before or since...
Cagney is the best. Period. Even in all of his lesser-known films, he's epic. Taxi!, Mayor of Hell, Picture Snatcher, you can never go wrong with any Cagney.
one of the best scenes in film ever! massive appreciation to youtube and the people who uploadx
Unlike Humphrey Bogart, James Cagney took no crap from any of the Dead End Kids..
Cagney heard how they jumped Bogie and left him there in his drawers! Cagney went upside
their heads! Leo Gorcey, one can see, was quite wary of Cagney afterwards.
Must the boys r having fun..?!
I saw traveling committed half a dozen times.
You should say "Foul!" and give the offender a slap!
"I didn't do Nuttin"................."Good, than don't do it again".
Love the movie and this has always been my favorite scene.
Cagney--a true artist.
I watched a Cagney movie once where he refereed a basketball game and the 3 stooges broke out!
Are they all dead now ? .love this film and watched a thousand times .. Pure art.
If the dead end kids were around 15 in 1933, which they looked, then they'd be about 100 today, so yeh, they're most likely gone now. Anyone who was an adult then, even young adult, is definitely passed on now
The one that became a doctor, Bernard Punsley, outlived the other kids, but he also passed away.
@@alvexok5523 I was over 100 when this movie was made. I'm still around.

Cagnney, O'Brian And the beautiful Ann Sheridan " Erin Gho Bragh"☘☘☘
LeBum James wouldve cried 15 seconds into this
I have never seen this movie, : (
Was he teaching these kids or abusing them? Both? Cagney had an incomparable tough-guy persona that was widely imitated. For better or worse.
That really old black and white movie NEVER comes up to watch in UA-cam, Netflix or Amazon.
A woman friend of mine looks just like Ann Sheridan. I told her that and she said how she always thought of herself as more like Jane Russell. She had a point, or rather two points.
What's the big idea???
This scene is parodied neatly in Stalag 17. Understand?
Really? I don't remember that. Kindly remind me, would you?
Jay Lawrence plays a POW in Billy Wilder's Stalag 17. He entertains the other prisoners with an uncanny Cagney impersonation. Particularly impressive ,in that, he does not resort to the lame "you dirty rat" cliche that most comics do.
Larry Storch's brother..........understand..
Didn't know that was Larry Storch's brother. Does resemble him (if my memory is right)
I wish more NBA referees were allowed to do this, punch a player in the knee each time he punches or shoves another player to the ground. Athletes learned to respect the rules back then whenever they acted out of line.
Where is the famous line: You'll slap me? You slap me in a dream, you better wake up and apologize.
Yeah, I was wondering that too, did you find out where it is?
@@TheBORailroad53 nope. I watched several Cagney pictures from that period and nothing came up. I don't know if the line was cut of or what. Its a puzzle.

Always thought the younger Andy Bell from Erasure looked like Cagney!
Steph curry and lebron would have no chance matching their athleticism to that era
I don't think kids play tackle football after school without gear anymore.
Funny you should mention that, I loved doing that. But one day it resulted in a broken collar bone. My bad, shouldn't have been playing with kids twice my size and twice as mean.
