It allows you to double jump (or is it triple?) right after a previous triple jump. Instead of the jumps resetting. In that level there was only enough room for a triple jump and Ryu couldn’t do one without a phantom. He couldn’t get over the spikes. Thus the level is unbeatable.
Yeah, a phantom jump is that you do the double/triple jump on the fourth/fifth jump. After they patched it you can't do it anymore so it starts with a normal jump again on the fourth jump.
That's just like saying swimming through a toxic pile of hospital wards garbage (discarded bandages, needles and all) - and somehow coming out alive and not too scarred and diseased feel 'satisfying' too.

One of his old 100-man videos has a comment where a guy lied to his wife about about where his kid picked up the F-word from Ryu because he wanted to keep watching it with his kid. He constantly makes a big deal of 69. Ryu is not naturally inclined to be family friendly.

You would do a triple jump, and at the peak of the jump, you would quickly turn back and then forward, and when you land, you would think you'd have to do a double then triple jump, but you skip the first jump when you land and you can do the phantom jump

Apparently, they cleared all of the levels that were made the first year that SMM1 came out (according to ThaBeast). The Team 0% Discord server is currently working on clearing all 2019 uncleared levels in SMM2 since that’s the year it came out. Both ThaBeast and Panga make videos about this series and it’s a blast to watch because as more and more levels get cleared, the leftover ones tend to be really challenging. It would be great if Ryu took on the challenge as well, but since he isn’t even doing Iron Bros, I don’t see him jumping on any trends or challenges. Even if it would be fun to watch.
I don’t really understand why he does this. I’ve noticed it too though. If he really thinks his fans want to watch SMM1 content, why is he clickbaiting with the wrong tag? And yes, I’m salty about it because I wasn’t into watching it flaying Mario Maker during the SMM1 era, so I have no nostalgia or love for the first game.

The good old days of 100 Mario's are back again. Thats 100 more Mario's biting the dust. They introduce the fling up in Mario World never to return unless you count Mario maker games.
In my personal opinion I feel like SMM1’s super expert no skip is way better than smm2 I think it’s that in SMM1 you have a goal and it’s satisfying to see you go for Princess Peach instead of just playing levels in SMM2. I love all your videos!!!
the bad is that MM1 feels outdated now, most of the levels are the same and even if it is super expert it is more akin to whan an expert level or normal even is on SMM2
Those coins in the long level say "Mario Shi" something, I can't make out what that last character is (if it even is one?). The level is called "First course, aiming for less than 20% clear rate"

@Tim Bitten in some videos toward the end of 2021/ start of 2022 Ryu even tried to reintroduce artificially the 100 Mario challenge to SMM2 adding 100 lives while he was playing that game but even that failed miserably because there wasn't still any Princess Peach that he could rescue at the end so it wasn't the same for him and us, so eventually he got back to SMM1 to play again the 100 challenge in the only possible correct way 😅😂

To explain it for you, a phantom jump was where you did a triple jump, then followed it with a normal jump, and then triple jumped again immediately after. Despite doing only a total of five jumps, you triple jumped twice, on the 3rd and 5th jumps. That's why levels which require that trick are now impossible.
Unless it took you quite awhile to finally find 100 mans that are doable, You are getting alot luckier with courses you're given than what hell lies in 100 man usually. Congratulations
I actually would be super interested in watching you try to get a "perfect" super expert no-skip run (ending with 99 lives), as unlikely as it may be. You'd just have to restart the run as soon as you reach a life count that makes it impossible.
"Mario big adventure babyyyy" needed a powerup for each key and every path gave you a powerup for another key. You just start the level picking the powerup of your choice for whatever first key lies ahead.
I might be wrong but I'm 90% sure that the turtles don't "woke up" in MM1, it was a mechanic added in MM2, but Ryu knows more than me so I don't really know.
They absolutely do wake up in MM1. The difference is that if you put the turtle down and pick it back up in MM1, it resets the timer. So you can carry it an infinite distance as long as there's solid ground to stand and set it on.
Dang, I wish the 5th level in the second run had been the sixth that way you would have rescued Princess Peach as Bowser Jr. in the clown car. I always loved it when runs were successfully completed with the character wearing a costume.

In the second word, I only recognize the first katakana, which is 're', or 'レ', but I do not recognize that second character, nor could I get a kanji translator to figure it out, so without that I have no idea what the second word says. Thank you for explaining phantom jump. I don't play super Mario but you look really cool when you do it. Does anyone have a link to what a phantom jump suppose to look like?
