    Yet you still had very strong mathematics and statistics background at a university level. Good luck to the people seeing this that don't have that background. Their best option is to go do an undergraduate and pick up those skills, otherwise no chance.
    Don't underestimate the strong problem solving skills you develop in undergraduate and graduate level STEM program.

    • @egorhowell
      @egorhowell  4 місяці тому +4

      Hi James. Yes this is a fair point, I do say in the video that I had an advantage and everyone's background is different, so you shouldn't compare directly yourself. I don't believe my physics degree was the sole reason behind me landing my first role. :)

      Hi . If i get into Oxford BA Mathematics and did really well on the course, can I top data Science jobs in the UK?
      And studying Physics vs Maths at Oxford for a data science career? Thanks .

    • @jamestucker4800
      @jamestucker4800 4 місяці тому +2

      @natural-926 you'd realistically need some statistics and programming along with that Math foundation. Pair it with a major or minor in CS

    • @egorhowell
      @egorhowell  4 місяці тому +3

      @@natural-926 If you study maths at Oxford then yes defo you can get a data science job! Just make sure to learn some python and maybe try a data science internship somewhere.
      The maths degree will give you great fundamentals. But, when applying to jobs you have to demonstrate an interest in the field. Hope this helps?
      And for physics vs maths, tbh it doesn't make much difference for a data science career. In maths you can tailor your modules to be more stats focussed, which is probably better. However, overall its miniscule.

    Data scientist is just a title, it is more interesting what type of work you will be doing. I know "data scientists" who do tableau and power point all day, I also know data scientists who implement machine learning models in C++. Don't focus so much on the title figure out what you want to do.

During my school days, I used to solve hard physics problems based on Newtonian mechanics but research is quite different from school or even college physics. Now I realize that what I liked was the problem-solving part of physics and not necessarily the physics itself. Even though maths and statistics are not taught that much extensively in my degree but I have somewhat knowledge about maths and statistics since I took these two subjects both in my Olevels and Alevels. So do you thing that the knowledge I have gathered in my Olevels and Alevels is enough for learning Data Science. If you want to be a data scientist then yeah go for it. Depending on your background, you could land a job in 4-5 months.
      Data science is not solely computer science based. If you know maths and stats well, then I would say thats better than theoretical computer science concepts.
      Most computer science you need to go is basically how to code, at least for an entry level job.
      I would say go for it, but don't go into thinking you will definitely land a job within 5 months. Like I say in the video, every journey is different and it's best not to compare to others!

      And I have 4-5 months in hand to learn at least basics...

      @@pallavraj9722 oh 100% you can learned the basics of computer science in that time.

      Just take any course, ideally Python if its data science that you want to get into.

      Hey thanks for the feedback! I finished my degree in June 2021, but was studying from around December 2020.
      As you are a CS student, I think it's more than possible that you can get a DS role. Applying for grad schemes would your best bet as they don't necessarily expect much experience. I think you are more likely to land a DS role after your degree, as they often specify you need some degree.
      Hope this helps!
