The armchair enthusiasts don't have a clue just what the driver is having to concentrate on during the race, especially when fighting up front. The Canadian GP 2007, as well as 2008, saw someone crash behind the safety car. Jarno Trulli in the Toyota pitted behind the safety car and on his way out of the pits just went straight off the road at turn 2 and into the wall. That race also saw more "red light at pit out" shenanigans, with both Massa and Fisichella getting disqualified midrace for ignoring the red light and exiting the pitlane when it was closed.
I can't remember who it was, but before the 2002 Brazilian GP, someone crashed into an open door of a medical car that had come out to deal with a stricken car before the race had even started. Very fortunately no one was hurt. I know it doesn't count, but I thought I'd mention it.
It would be fantastic if u add some videos not much but at least 5/10 seconds along with the information... Matt is expert though, he explains such a way that we can draw a picture though, but a video footage would be awesome... Cheers Matt✌🏼✌🏼✌🏼
Something in common with all of the drivers on this list. They're either a world champion, finished on the podium or have been tipped to be a future World Champion (the latter one wouldn't have been listed if Mercedes didn't mess up his pit stop and he didn't manage to get a puncture when he was in 2nd).
There was (sorry Matt) another incident behind the safety car involving Michael Schumacher. In China 2005, he spun off into the gravel and retired after a combination of trying to maintain heat in his tyres and avoiding his (at the time) future team mate Felipe Massa. Massa's engineer was as surprised as anyone when it happened, "... You have Michael behind you. Probably he will try to have a go at you, I don't know if he's light [on fuel]... Michael just spun behind you Felipe!"
Vettel at fuji 2007 doesnt tell the whole story. Lewis was leading followed by mark and seb. Lewis went off line and slowed for no apparent reason and forced mark to slow down aswell. Since it was raining like crazy, seb didnt expect mark to brake for no reason in that fast corner and didnt see him in time
Russell felt understandably bad after his incident, but the fact that the three drivers with more wins than anyone else in F1 history -- Hamilton (95), Schumacher (91) and Vettel (53) -- have all crashed under the safety car, shows it can happen to anyone! And for Schumi, it was the only interruption to what could have been *13 wins in a row* at the beginning of the 2004 season. Unbelievable!
Hamilton crashed two times under safety car but nobody really remember it. Do you remember when he crashed at Hockenheim in 2019 before his nearly 60 seconds PIT stop ? It was actually under safety beacuse it was one lap after Leclerc crashed there too. I am suprised that nobody remember about it
Everyone is disappointed that Russel is on this list, but this is a very prestigious list of drivers. I’d say it probably helps his chances of winning a championship instead of hindering them
I like those videos but it would be lovely to include video footage if possible. For a non native english speaker like me it would be so much nicer to understand and visiolize.. :)
They aren't simply stupid mistakes. Driving an F1 car under the safety car is more difficult than driving it full speed on an empty track. At slow speed, the tires are cold and there's absolutely no downforce. It's exactly like driving on ice
