@@thatyoutubechannel9953 He's actually typically Dutch.
@Tim Grahn Jawn.
I know people say this a lot, but it’s sad when a comedian is asking tougher questions than our news media
Comedians make their money by shedding light on the ridiculousness of the status quo. The job of today's media is to distract you enough so that you don't question the status quo. They are millionaires paid by billionaires to keep you in your houses, work as they tell you to work, and buy what they tell you to buy. They divide you up and push you to rage at each other over the most trivial things. What did he tweet today? What shade of skin am I supposed to hate? Which liar am I supposed to defend?
God forbid we collectively start asking meaningful questions. What would they do if we ever unified and called the people making decisions to account for what they have done?
Comedy actually has a lot of overlap with what journalism is supposed to be about, journalism is supposed to be about speaking truth to power, about holding the powerful accountable by shedding light on their activities.
Comedy is very similar to that because comedy is often about making fun of the status quo, and the powerful tend to be the embodiment of the status quo, so the funniest jokes are often about the most powerful people.
@@snapgab I agree with the statement of what journalism is "supposed to be". Most of the media has decided to cash in on division, sensationalism, and spewing the propaganda of the wealthy. The gap between what they should do and what they actually do seems to increase every day. They will spend days wringing their hands over the tweet of a fool. I don't see them investigating and making the lives of big pharma executives difficult by shedding light on them. Just one of the endless examples.
so true. just ask Jimmy Dore !
Lol, I don't think you've seen how Bregman is usually handled in the news media. He was on BBC just yesterday and it was literally just 3 people constantly trying to smear him to no end. Bregman is *not* the type who gets away with softball questions.

Great job Trevor. He really got him to get his ideas out and his questions helped instead of hampering the flow.
We're already paying a lot of taxes and don't get any benefit. What makes you think raising taxes is gonna solve the problem? The issue right now is allocating the money to things that don't bring any value to people. We're spending so much on Wars, Foreign aid and black budget that we could solve a lot of education and health care issues
A Avesta - He's not advocating that you, me and the rest of us working people, not even the still comfortable parts of the middle class, pay more taxes, but that the very, very rich pay Their Fair Share. Because as a historian, he knows that the riches of the rich are far greater proportionately than what they've been except for just before the 1929 crash. And in fact, through corporate welfare, military industrial complex spending and tax structures in their favor, those rich are actually collecting our taxes, much less contributing much if anything to the common good. Does that show how wealth should be re-distributed? Garbage collectors in mansions and bankers in tiny apartments? :)
It does have a bias in it though. Rutger said that 85% of the money was inaccessible, but it is a common idea in banking that it will never occur that every customer of a bank takes off their money at once. So if 15% was still accessible, it would indeed not matter much if the bankers striked.

All my things are already set up automatically. Pay goes in automatically, bills paid the same way. A banker is only involved when they are trying to get something from me. If I need to go into a bank, a teller can do everything I need. The poor already have access to resources outside of banks. We have stores that cash our checks. Some jobs used to cash checks for their employees, and if push came to shove, they would go back to that. The poor who do use banks do so because it is a convenience and saves money if done right. But it is not a need. And the banks have only themselves to blame, since they decided that the money of the poor was no good to them. Basically, what I'm trying to say is that I had hoped that Andrew Yang had gotten an interview format similar to Rutger's. I think Ronnie is hilarious, but it needed to be more informational. Like this conversation with Bregman.
Political optics
I thought this same thing, it was so damn disappointing they didn't even let Yang speak. But they gave Kamala Harris a full segment and plenty of time. Makes me wonder who s pulling the strings at TDS. maybe the bosses upstairs wont let them give Yang the official stamp of approval, so the staff are showing support for the policies by having Brahman explain them in detail after flashing Universal Basic Income in Yangs segment

AOC and Rutger Bregman! I have hope for the world because of these two and more like them.
They represent our whole generation of young, informed people. LET'S DO THIS
BERNIE 2020
@Snappingturtle 267 Great argument. You must be proud.
@RC Christian Or American capitalism is just depressing as hell. More and more people have to deal with rising costs but stagnant wages, depression and anxiety are on the rise, so-called "deaths of despair" are way up, and overall life expectancy has gone down the last 3 years. Productivity continues to go up, but we still work similar hours for similar pay, which means everyone is taking on a higher mental load every day than in the past and isn't being recognized for it. We need to get back to the 1960s philosophy of workers and businesses having an equal say when it comes to work policies.
He is slowly becoming my favorite person in the world.
Strong ideas man...we need people like you
This may have been the most important interview Trevor Noah has ever done.
Definitely
Agreed

Over a year late to this party, but ... what an awesome interview!
They feed him back into the news feed so people who missed it looked it up, causing a cybernetic feedback loop of sorts, where now you will get more relative videos.
Love this guy since the Tucker incident. Didn’t know he has a book. You gotta love historian since history repeats itself. Will buy the book for sure
Thank you so much for having this scholar on your show. I love his work, and I was very interested to hear what he had to say. Wonderful thank you so much for having Rutger Bregman on your show. I love his work, and I was very interested to hear what he has to say. He’s brilliant!!
He is sooo measured in his speech, yet not boring, instead I wish his answers were longer!!
Thank you Trevor for having Mr. Bergman on your show. I can't wait to buy Utopia for Realists!👍👍👍
Thank you for having him on. I just bought his book (the Kindle edition) at dun, dun, daaaaaah....Amazon (oh, dear, perhaps just a little problematic, but there it is), thanks to this interview!
He is living proof of the VALUE of HISTORY (and Geography, and the social sciences in general)! STEM subjects are great, but like everything else, they NEED a CONTEXT!
This book is absolutely fantastic! Buy it, read it, donate it to someone else and force them to do the same. We need this so bad.
Guys got balls! Love it!
R Owens and brains!
R Owens I agree and his are mega BIG BALLS. ....Thanks Trevor please bring more of this young millenniums who say who don't B.S. about important issues & try to be all PC I'm from Africa but my most of my family lives in the U.S. studying and try to make ends meet so i have a keen interest in such conversations....thanks Trevor!!!

I agree with him, to get to that place we will have to fight extremely hard for it, as those who control the economic power will fight it till the bitter end

The man is unapologetic and fearless 💪😍
Really glad you guys gave this man decent air time. I see too many shows giving important gusts way too little time. Kudos.
*We must make sure people like this, including Anand Giridharadas, have a louder voice in this world.*
I’d love to see this guy debate Ben Shapiro
Me too
It would go something like this..... Ben Shapiro would make a point that makes total sense based on FACTS, ......Rutger would get angry along with all the other left wing dems in the crowd, he would not know how to respond to Ben and claim "Ben's a racist!!!" The entire debate would be pathetic!
@@sabre-sevendelta6675 ua-cam.com/video/6VixqvOcK8E/v-deo.html Yeeeeah, I don't think so.

Ben can only go after college kids, when he's faced with someone who knows what he's talking about he changes into an angry boy who talks fast.
Andrew yang is running for president on these types of ideas. Highly recommend watching his videos
Justin Stults Actually Bernie is not Yang
Yang's "Freedom Dividend" and "Human Centered Capitalism" are exactly the policy proposals that we need. They address the problems that Rutger Bregman talks about in his book! Bregman's book is how I started researching UBI, and is a big part of the reason why I came to support Andrew Yang.
Dmitri Villanueva Did you miss other parts of the Book? Or read the other books? It doesn’t began and end at a UBI. Bernie has a robust plan that covers every base. Yang has UBI, that can be used as the libertarian dream to eliminate a social safety net. And on healthcare and everything else he has half-measures. Yang doesn’t go far enough. UBI would be a great addition to Bernie’s plans but not a single issue worth electing someone as president for.
Yang has 160+ policies, more detailed than Bernie's plans, outlined on his website.
Dmitri Villanueva Having a lot of policy plans means nothing if they’re mostly as trivial as getting rid of the penny. And half-measures of Bernies policy’s don’t count. That takes a huge chunk out of those 160 policies.
Now, as we start to think about how we will rebuild our economy, is the time to start taking these ideas seriously. Otherwise we will rebuild the same inequities that have been festering for years and ultimately holding back growth as the wealth gap gets wider and wider. We need to be smart rather than digging our political heels in to a system that has been broken for some time.
Rutger is awesome....hope he keeps speaking up and opening minds to better the world.
please watch the unaired interview with Tucker... it's here on youtube! And it would be VERY important for the usual Fox-viewer to see!
I just posted it for someone up above who said "People are saying" that it wasn't aired because he was offensive to Tucker. It should be posted everywhere. ua-cam.com/video/6_nFI2Zb7qE/v-deo.html
@@chezmoi42 yeah!:D
Here's the background: Carlson had read that he decried limousine liberals so he wanted him to do that on his show but Bregman turned it back around on Carlson and exposed that he is in fact a limousine conservative
@@mehjones8008 Thank you for that tidbit. I admire Bregman even more for his perspicacity.

Read the book. Love it so much. I wish Andrew Yang and this guy can sit down and converse.
I guess you already watched it but they did on YangSpeaks.
The Crystal Ball interview on the Forward party is also very interesting.
Wow.. a really good historian. Great video
Murdoch is literally melting from reading the book
You should also read Bergman's new book. He is such a smart guy.
De Meeste Mensen Deugen!
And ... Another point in history. Jimmy Carter tried to start the green new deal by Putting Solar Panels on the White House. Dropping the Thermostat to 64f in the winter and Calling for more Renewable Energy. When Reagan won he was so Pissed about Renewable Energy he pulled the plug on most , if not all projects and Ripped the Solar Panels off the roof.
TheSmreeder Reagan...Trump - bad things happen when men whose only claim to fame is bad movies and bad TV shows are elected to public office. Never could stand either one of them on the tube when they were supposed to be entertaining, could stand them even less when they entered the White House. Why do we elect stupid people to office? At least Richard Nixon had a good brain - he tried to get a basic income started to end poverty - but it tanked in the Senate twice because the GOP wanted to be stingy and the Democrats wanted to make basic income a realistic amount. Too bad.
Reagan was awful, but "awful" is relative (cf. Trump).
Rutger is a hero..from my country the netherlands..where common sense is something the dutch hold high. I'm so glad to see him here being intervieuwed by Trevor Noah..two very smart people sitting at a table. I like the historical facts from wich Rutger Bregman is pointing at ..in order to give simple logic solutions=common sense.
This is why historians are important. So much to learn from our past.
Seeing this as a Dutchman makes me proud to be Dutch
Ja ik ook! Very proud indeed! 👌
@Snappingturtle 267 what are you, genius? Do you write laws, have you studied the history of the world, do you fight for eradicating poverty?

Are you just some person behind a keyboard who has nothing better to say than 'idiot' and 'socialists' to people that have ideas you don't like?

@petterhny Every Dutch "right wing" party is pretty center/left for American standards, because America politicized certain topics the Dutch reckon basic human rights (or "common sense" as Rutger states). Although parties indeed endlessly discuss the proportion of money going towards healthcare or education - abandoning your right to affordable healthcare or education is out of question. In America they're not even agreeing on that part.

Wow, the world needs more people like this guy!
Andrew Yang is trying to make this man's idea a reality!
Yang wants to lower taxes and replace welfare programs with ubi. Bregman does not. Huge difference.
@@andorifjohn Yang doesn't want to lower taxes in fact he wants a VAT (to pay for the UBI) that exempts consumer staples and falls on luxury goods . (Therefore effecting high income earners more) America is the only developed economy without a VAT . You can't make America like Sweden without following tax structures similar to them .
13 million people that live in poverty are completely disconnected from the current social safety net . Average wait time for disability is 2 years. 67% of claims are denied. Average food stamp payout is $126/person per month. Average TANF is $447 per month.
The average person receiving benefits gets less than $750/mo. Yangs UBI not only puts an extra $250 in their pocket, it also doesn't get taken away as their situation improves. They also don't have to go through bureaucratic hell to get their basic needs . I recommend looking more into his policies and hearing from himself instead of what others tell you about him .
I agree on the issues. I don't trust Yang.
I am also swedish.

Moderates are cowards! They're useless.
@@rlud304 not completely useless. If there were more moderate democrats back when Republicans supported universal income we'd have universal income. As a Dutchie it's really weird to see him on this channel, because he is not getting much coverage here. His ideas are 'dumb' here of the right, while UBI is in a way a right policiy. I hope he will gain more attraction in Holland again and politicians will pick it up what Andrew is doing. Every country should get an UBI to make the WORLD GREAT!

Yea and they will say its because he said bullshit even though i find a billionare refusing to pay even a penny more so that we can end hunger and poverty in the world a trillion times more disgusting
He's Dutch,...that's our natural and national state of mind.
Having the super rich isn't logically sustainable, neither is it fair.
And we Dutch are very direct about tackling such issues.
You guys are the champions of capitalism you are used as an example in Portugal of why we should change to capitalism instead of this weird mixed system we have
Used as an example by the Liberals VVD from Portugal
@@andrecarvalho1339 You misunderstand the ideals and ways of Dutch merchants.
And the VVD is only one of many political parties,...and no party rules alone in any Dutch government, seems you've got alot to learn.
ThatDutchguy i know that no party rules alone a few months ago gave a draw on 12.7% for the three biggest parties
I was referring to the Portuguese Liberals as a Portuguese VVD because they are both in ALDE
I don’t know the ideals of Dutch merchants but I know that you have the principle of freedom well established not only in the Netherlands but in northern Europe in general. Democracy is in your DNA. In Portugal authoritarianism is in our DNA so everyone wants the government to help them and in an extreme case like this one now the EU(aka Dutch Germans and Scandinavians) to give money to our gigantic welfare state. In Portugal you are better seen if you don’t work and live well than if you work a lot and earn a lot. And that can be changed with economic liberalism and a quick research on the freest economies you will see that the ones on top, the most capitalist, are the richest.
So if the Dutch and the Irish are rich by being a fiscal heaven why can’t we Portugal do that?
National state of mind... have you noticed the way the Netherlands treats Shell? I love all this but let's not be too proud of ourselves man
Arrogante flapdrol
I like that he was given a platform. A lot of his ideas align with Democratic candidate Andrew Yang. However, all the Daily Show did for Yang was to mock him and cast doubt on the idea of universal basic income (UBI). I expect more from you Trevor (and Rodney). Thanks for this one, but he's not running for president. Yang2020
I think trevor did decent, and to honest combining both of these videos and promoting them together through social media could fill the gaps and really support Yang Campaign!
@Snappingturtle 267 you're an idiot
The convergence of technology and capitalism is not sustainable. There will be millions less jobs for people as population increases and the wealth gap gets wider and wider. "Capitalism" "socialism" "communism" are all theories of the past. We're can't constrain ourselves to black and white definitions of how our economy and culture and the value of a human being are viewed. Moving forward we cannot be pigeon holed by these ideas, and we must combine everything good from them in order to evolve our economy and culture to keep up with the evolution of technology. So many people are stuck in the thinking of the 20th century.
@Snappingturtle 267 I appreciate your thoughts and reply, but it appears you didn't read into the main point of my post. Sure, wealth is earned, but in this day and age things are different than how it used to be. No longer can people and small businesses prosper like they used to. Technology has already replaced millions of jobs and it's only going to accelerate. The billion dollar companies that have the rear of the government and the means to invest in automation and artificial intelligence will outpace everyone and consolidate the wealth even more. This country used to tax the people of means and now they get away with paying next to nothing while we (the consumers) full their pockets. If you think anyone can "pull themselves up by the bootstraps" and have a level playing ground with companies like Amazon, then you are living in the 90s or early 2000s. Young don't seem to understand how quickly things are changing. It is not going to fpp back to how things were. These changes were already happening, and the pandemic only accelerated it. Get ready for a world with high unemployment because there will not be enough jobs for everyone. I'll be fine, but tens of millions in our country won't be.
@Snappingturtle 267 you don't lift the poor by giving it to the rich either.
If it ain’t Dutch, it ain’t much! Fascinating from the first till the last second. Trevor was clearly intellectual overwhelmed by Rutger. Trevor makes sometimes fun of the Dutch, but our Social system is so much better then the American one, that you can really ask yourself, who’s making fun of who?
Rutger is een outspoken communists... Its the same as Wolff...
