  • Part 1/4: The complete procedure for removing factory speakers in E39 5 Series Sedan or Wagon (wagon has speakers in hatch ceiling and very easy to remove - not shown, refer to PDF guide at www.bavsound.com) years '99-05 and replacing them with BSW's STAGE I factory speaker upgrade kit (www.bavsound.com). This kit is very simple to install and perfectly replaces the factory speakers with better sounding, superior quality BSW drivers. Perfect fit and impedance. The guide covers all speaker locations found in the DSP and Business CD (standard) systems.

    OMG this car is so new :D Well sure, I come back after 9years. Haha.

    @WillThePlank We finally found you! Amazing : ) Well here's the thing, our new speakers don't have the secondary terminals, so you'll have to place a secondary speaker inside of the door panel somehow (or some other location in the vehicle). It's not easy, but can be done if you're the DIY kind of guy. Otherwise, you are going to have to choose between phone or speaker upgrade (go with the speakers!).

    That is actually a very unique 2" dome midrange that is both very hard to replace, and luckily, is also the one speaker in the car that sounds quite acceptable! So we just leave that working, and replace the other 80+% of the audio spectrum in the car by replacing the tweeters above the AC vent and the other tweeters and mid-bass drivers in the front and rear of the car.

    @IPGAuto If you love the Harman Kardon system you'll REALLY LOVE the BSW system. It just really opens up the sound, like night and day.

    thank you very much, great job. explanations are quite simple and easy to understand.

    @bavsound Cheers guys, In the end it turned out my system only had one feed (due to the fact it's DSP I think) so new set of tweets and 5.25's and away she went, Only thing I haven't changed is the ones on the shelf (done tweets in the rear doors)
    It sounds really good up front so not sure If I should bother doing the rear deck as my rear seats could be a pain to take out due to the built in child seat.

  • @bavsound
    @bavsound  13 років тому

    @IPGAuto I love this question : ) Okay I'd describe the Harman Kardon system as mediocre - The high end is gritty and lacks any sort of definition, the bass is muddy and flabby - it sounds like the speakers are playing "at you" . . . The BSW system sounds like a studio monitoring system - The high end is open, detailed, smooth, deep . . . You can hear the reverb in the room, the air around the vocalist, the separation between a bass guitar/synth and the kick drum. BSW = Depth!

  • @bavsound
    @bavsound  13 років тому

    @IPGAuto You can either spend the money buying a new amp and plugging that in; if it still doesn't work you can resell the amp and look elsewhere for the problem. Otherwise you'll have to spend hard diagnostic money at a shop or dealer. If that's the case I'd push to get them to roll the diagnostic fee into the purchase price of a new amp should you need one.

    I find it easier to leave the "pod" (4:06) right where it is and just remove the speaker. Great video though. Thanks!

  • @bavsound
    @bavsound  13 років тому

    @WillThePlank Well sounds like you've dealt with the primary locations. What you did definitely improves most of the sound but of course the rear deck speakers would clean it up even more. The removal of the rear seats isn't too tough but with the child seat that's a question for tech support - on our site - for more info.

  • @bavsound
    @bavsound  13 років тому

    @IPGAuto Well, yes it could be a fuse, wiring or bad amp. Sorry but without access to the car it's hard to say. Beyond checking fuses and reseating the plugs and wires you might need to go for professional diagnosis.

  • @WillThePlank
    @WillThePlank 13 років тому

    @bavsound Ok I will give that a try, Also your guide was very helpful too and got me through the install, Quite surprisingly this is one of the easier cars I've ever worked on and I do car audio installs myself. Checking out your E46 stuff so I can change some things about for my mums BMW.

    They help a bit, but if the speakers aren't impedance matched correctly it'll be hard to get them to sound good, period. If you take a look on our website we sell speakers that will work with the factory amp.

  • @WillThePlank
    @WillThePlank 13 років тому

    I'm that guy still using the factory phone! Only because it's one built into the arm rest that you put a sim into, I assume I can solder both sets of wires to the corresponding terminals?

    @simonnim321 Sorry for the delay. The E60 is similar but different sized, more specific speakers. Very easy as well.

    @bavsound - I checked all fuses. I checked wiring.. found few things but shouldn't be a worry. How can I tell an amp is bad. Shouldn't it make a noise when the radio is turned on?

  • @HeadBassVTEC

    would installing such foam gaskets improve the midrange response on any car that doesn't have them? I am thinking of upgrading the oem speakers on my car to better same size ones and it seems like a nice cheap improvement to the sound

  • @TeeJayFlowTV

    Is it really required to get gaskets for your speakers? Also how difficult is it to sound deaden the 2 front doors and the back speaker area of the e39?

    @bavsound - Issue. I have DSP. But the problem is my radio wont turn on at all. I hit the button and nothing. No light on head unit either. Check wiring, fuses.. bad amp?

    How is it possible to install a single voice coil speaker to front and having also phone working? Can you help how to wire original dual voice coil wires together into svc.

    will these BSW speakers sound good with other OEM head unit.
    I understand that the original BMW e39 head unit has a built in crossover to split the sound frequencies into the mids and tweeters. The replacement OEM unit does not have built in cross over, so I have to add the external crossovers to produce the sound separation.
    am I right ? Someone please advice .

    Hey bro I have an e39 528i 1999. So my speakers are shot the sound is very muffled now since the cars 21 years old. I have the original radio and speakers. The radio I’m looking to keep thought unless I need to change it. But the speakers I’m looking at changing out and using Bavsound. Do you think I would need a new radio or just the speakers will do fine ? Thanks bro !

    @minorthreat1234 Hi you can tell if you have DSP by whether or not your stereo has simple Treble and Bass controls or a full blown EQ with other sound effects like "hall" and "theatre" type simulations. Regarding the sound problem it could be a few things and I would recommend you sending an email or calling our tech support at bavsound dot com. Thanks.

    how's the bass after replacing all of the speakers? the stock BMW speakers had no bass whatsoever.. is there a noticeable difference after changing those 5.25" speakers?

    • @cobycranman9815
      @cobycranman9815 10 років тому

      Hi Paperboi714, at the end of the day we are replacing 5.25" speakers with 5.25" speakers, so yes their is a NOTICEABLE improvement in the low-frequency clarity and "punch" from the new drivers, the difference is not like adding a subwoofer. . . For that you need a subwoofer : ) I hope this helps.

    • @tee228
      @tee228 10 років тому +1

      Coby Cash thanks for the info! i'm going to go ahead and upgrade the speakers just to get better sound and some bass until i can afford the sub. these stock BMW speakers sound like a really loud laptop! lol thanks again =D

    • @tee228
      @tee228 10 років тому

      Coby Cash i just installed these JL C2 525 components running off the stock head unit, no amp powering it yet. coming in in a few days. the problem isn't that the speaker isnt loud enough, its the fact that i'm still getting the same bass sound almost exactly the same as the oem speakers =/ no bass whatsoever. im sure the speakers are fine and supposed to have bass. does it have anything to do with the enclosure or what could it be? please help =]

    • @bavsound
      @bavsound  10 років тому

      paperboi714 Hi Paperboi, probably the impedance is the biggest issue. A 5.25" speaker is only going to have so much bass but you probably would have gotten better bass response had you gone with Bavsound drivers, as the impedance would have at least been matched and we optimized our speakers for use within that enclosure. Good luck with the rest of the project!
