    The stuff is absolutely great. I think it's made here in PA. Two things. Take the time to carefully map out the routing of your pex. The spacing should be very even to avoid overly warm spots in your slab. If you buy the product directly from the company, they product a map of exactly where to run your tubing. Second...Take a hundred pictures on the floor once the tubing is down. Some day some where you'll need to attach or drill into the floor. Knowing where the heat tubes and plumbing runs is as good as gold.

    • @matthewgroff433
      @matthewgroff433 2 роки тому +5

      I was going to mention about taking photos of where the tubing is placed when it is down, this way some time in the future, not if, but when you need to attach or drill into the floor you know exactly where the heat tubes are and where the plumbing runs are, is invaluable!! I learned that from a different UA-cam channel when they were working with a similar product.

    Just a hint for when you lay the PEX. After it is all laid out, before you pour the concrete, get some overhead shots of where the PEX is so that afterward if you need to drill in the concrete you can refer to the video to make sure you don't hit the PEX.

    • @patriotmama
      @patriotmama 2 роки тому

      Yes, agree and take plenty of measurements so you know right where the PEX is. We have PEX in our house under our hardwood floors. Our family room floor was built up w/sand then PEX and concrete over that. We did the same in our shop and took careful measurements as well as photos. Hope w/clouds in winter he has enough solar to keep the water flowing b/c even w/that foam board, as cold as it gets there, the water stops flowing due to electricity or a bad pump, the PEX will have a good chance of rupturing.

    Don't forget to use a good amount of rebar. You need minimum two, half inch rebar, around the perimeter edges 8 inches apart & 4 inches from the edge. You also need to make a 16 to 24 inch grid in the center area with double half inch rebar where you have your wall section. Everywhere rebar crosses it needs to be wire tied. The grid should be suspended so it will be at least 1 inch below the concrete surface, at about half the thickness of your concrete. You can use stones or buy supports to maintain the position. Extra rebar can be placed anywhere there's a penetration & at all corners.
    It took me several days, working alone to rebar our 20x40 slab. I am 78 years old & I had the advice of an 86 year old that is still doing concrete, & has been in the concrete union since he was 18! He KNOWS concrete! Our project turned out perfect.
    Your project is looking GREAT! 👍👌😊

    • @jimseslar1070
      @jimseslar1070 2 роки тому +1

      I agree. you also filled in your footings with foam. Where are you putting the rebar and or wire? if you don't put it down you will have a cracked slab.

      @Iron *Fe* ... you're right. I can think of no reason he couldn't add another layer of protection. Just going by what he said the mfgr suggested the product can do. I'm still concerned the PEX pipes will be too deep in the slab for efficient function.

    I also put 2 inches of blue board 4 feet wide along the entire exterior perimeter of the building as added protection against frost reaching beneath the slab. This may have been "over kill" but nothing has moved yet. I can't stress enough that the sides of the slab need to be insulated. Without it would be like leaving the windows open in the building throughout the winter. The insulation can be put against the forms before the pour or against the side of the slab after removing the forms and then backfill to hold the insulation in place.

    That type of system I’ve seen before ínstales on my sisters house just do consider in ever section you build walls on if you do install radiant pex make sure per each section it’s one solid line start to finish you will be running a manifold I’m figuring so make sure you have all copper manifold will handle heat much better and that would be my sugestión in this I’ve seen all ready in my sisters house she having have concrete cut out to repair sections because they did not use one solid line per section also one section had been punctured by a concrete screw holding a wall so take all walls into account and size of bolts holding walls that the don’t reach the pex under the concrete slab that my best suggestion God bless and good work on the prep outstanding job Al and Gina

    Rain. It didn't make a problem, yay. You guys are so hands on to build your homestead. I like those panels with the raised piers to lock your pex into that has your radiant heat in it. It's nice that they lock together. Cool find. That cloud shot is pretty. It looks really good guys. I'm assuming you'll heat the water with wood and use solar power electric pumps to circulate the water as needed. Cool product. I hope this makes it really easy to put the pex runs down. *Important* Make sure your using Oxygen Barrier PEX for the slab.
    FWIW: Its more practical to use the flat rigid foam panels than use rebar and wire with zip ties to hold the pex. A slab that large really needs rebar to address concrete cracking. The rebar will also provide strength to for the Pex if the slab does shift. I would still use a heavy grade vapor barrier since foam is not completely moisture impermeable and moisture can get through the seams of the foam. not sure if that slab will pass inspection without rebar in it.

    Too late now, but for those you are considering it. This stuff works better if you keep the "knobs" in very straight rows. You can see it visually either square across or it is real obvious diagonally. That stagger is fine as long as you pay attention to the alignment of those knobs. Al is close so the pex will bend that much but easier if it is straight runs instead of jogging back and forth for the misaligned ones. This was more important with copper tubing as it did not like to bend as easily. Also could have avoided waste by using the cut offs from the first part as starters for the second part. No big deal but just saying.

    Great video. It's a pity that you can't dismantle the barn that you bought off the internet and take it with you, but I suppose it would be easier, and quicker, to just build another one. Just love how things are starting to step up a gear now.

    Al you need more rebar stakes around the perimeter of your slab walls 1 every 4’ if not the weight of the concrete will push the walls outward

    insulation has to be put on the framing board then the concrete pored against it!
    Get a routing drawing from the supplier for the tubing to be put down, also you may have trouble with that because some of the pieces aren't lined up right????

      When Mike put his in, he was super cautious to ensure than it was flat under every panel so that they had no give at all. He may have been more cautious than he needed to be, but it appeared to me that Lumnah's panels have some give as they walk on them. Again, I don't know from personal experience how much this matters, but it is conceivable to me that it could be important.

    I built on a radiant monolithick slab a couple of years ago north of you in Columbia NH. It is very important to insulate the walls of the slab as well as beneath it. I also had the pex tubing close to the edge of the slab more closely wound as there needs to be more heat near the walls where the cold will be trying to infiltrate the building. I think you will be happy with the build.

    I love seeing how different people do things. We always lay poly under our slabs to eliminate wet concrete, (we didn't do in floor heat in our 3 big pours though) I'm guessing this foam is going to do a mighty nice job 👍🏻

  • @ruthanderson1758
    @ruthanderson1758 2 роки тому

    Looking good. My only concern would be that I hope you don't get a really strong wind storm that could life the panels and blow them away before you have a chance to install the pex and the concrete - fingers crossed that doesn't happen.
