Our house burns through 16 cords of wood and the garage between 5-6 depending on what kind of projects we need to do in there. We were told for our size of heating needed the outside boilers would not make much of a difference. We would still have to go heat at night. It's looking great! Congrats on 300k

    Looking great Al, I seen the builder working on your material for the tiny house, and I never realize that OSB had a shelf life until I watched several videos on it. Ken’s Karpentry is really cranking up those videos for your new Tiny house. Just remember don’t over do your back because it can take weeks to heal up.

    • @rickster9993
      @rickster9993 2 роки тому +6

      OSB? I wouldn't give you 10 cents for a sheet of OSB. If it ever gets wet it falls apart. You have no idea how many floors and roof decks I've replaced because of spilled pops and leaking shingles. A can of Pepsi will melt a hole right through that stuff. I've actually had to repair the holes.

    • @StoneKathryn
      @StoneKathryn 2 роки тому +2

      @@rickster9993 Yeah, the people before us build a garage and put OSB up for all the walls and some of it is powder at the bottom because of the rain moisture rotting through it. They didn't paint it and they didn't put tar paper behind it. The whole lower foot section above the concrete blocks is powder. it has cedar siding and that is what is holding it together. If you bump it it crumbles.

    The outdoor boiler is a great buy. My friend lives in the country and has a boiler heating his house and large garage. His heating costs are very low because he works for a logging company and gets his wood at very low cost. Since you have so much bush around you finding good quality fire wood is going to be easy and not cost you much.

    Please consider excavating your (building your) berm as soon as possible. Rain and snow melt (on fall warm and cool days) will run where gravity takes them, you need to divert the water from the building site. Once the berm is in, gravel, french, and natural drains will not be required, since you;ve provided a clear path for the water to flow around your building site. Additionally, it will eliminate ice forming on driveways and walkways to the boiler and tiny house power center. Love the journey, thanks for taking me along. FYI: Wild flowers and day lilies hold berms in place beautifully, and makes bees happy!

    Al, get a small carport to put over the boiler and wood as a temporary shelter. Later on you can use it somewhere else or to store something g somewhere else on the property. It is metal, fireproof, portable and cheaper than wood right now

He told me about keeping the smoke stack short. He first put it higher. But realized to run more efficient keep it short. Have fun.

    I know the rocks are a pain to deal with but to me they seem like a blessing in disguise. I love the stone fences , use them as features, maybe with your views on the property a mini castle turret in the woods- could double as a deer stand , around your pond, so many possibilities 🙂

    Hi Things are looking great apart from the weather which we in Scotland know about as well, time to put warmer inner and outer warmers on and keep helping the farm to come together and sometimes there is not much time to sit about and get cold, especially when your Husband is such a very hard worker, I love helping to get things done and I very rarely have time to even when doing housework and cooking dinner and we only moved house 7months ago. We have prepared a big garden for all things we need even flowers. I am 76yrs old and my better half is8oyrs. Hope all goes well. Love

It was also really interesting hearing what you have planned for creating berms to direct the water run-off. Gonna be great when you can get grasses planted again to hold that soil in place.

    Hey AL have you ever considered using your bucket to raise your tracks off the ground to take the pressure off of them,once the track is off the ground you can swivel your track to the position that you need,I see other home steaders do it with their excavators all the time.That way it saves a lot of wear and tear on all of the rollers and the tracks.

    It's all starting to come together but I hope that the s.... holds off so you can get alot done then you can work inside during the miserable days. Will you be staying in the container home at times during the building. Al I think that is a good idea of a birm to reroute the water but could you put plastic down and put the rocks down on it to keep from eroding the bank. Back in the 90's when I was a hiredman for a farmer we took out the Grove and put up a 54x150 Morton Bldg and the day before we poured concrete inside the building we ordered over sized rock like 4-6 in. for the base and spread it out and that night we got over 3 inches of rain but it didn't stop us as we had lots of cement trucks in and out and never got stuck with 7 yds on each load and after we got the whole inside poured we went over the oversized rock with 2 in and made a perfect base and then about every year after we put down inch rock in the spring and then you have all year to work it In for a base.
    I hope you can get a big shed up so you can get your tractor and excavator and equipment inside for the winter. Are you going to do a pkg deal like you did at the home place or buy lumber straight out as you need it. Al you should check out Outdoors with the Morgans to see how Mike deals with bulk firewood may save you some time and money. And your time is worth alot. Hope you are keeping a daily journal so you can always look back and see what you were doing. Your bigger rocks would work great around your culverts on your road. Are the beavers staying away ?

    When you compact wet soil, it wicks the moisture to the top and the soil starts to pump. It shouldn't be too bad with the gravel because it's porous and will drain relatively fast. A few days rest should have it in good shape to compact nicely.
